How to Style Six Different Outfits from One Base
Happy Friday ladies! If you’re a fan of the effortless “one and done” dress, this post is for you. Personally, I find dresses a bit tricky since I’m long-waisted, so I often reach for matching sets instead—like a coordinated skirt and top or pants and top. With the right foundation piece, whether it’s a great dress or a set, you can easily mix, match, and layer your way through an entire week of stylish outfits for different occasions. Let’s chat about How to Style Six Different Outfits from One Base.

How to Style Six Different Outfits from One Base
Choose Your Base Wisely
If your base outfit has a lot of pattern keep your accessories simple. You will have a lot more options if you go for texture over pattern. For posts like this, I usually go with a versatile t-shirt dress, a little black dress or something similar for a base outfit. This time, I thought it would be fun to switch things up with a two-piece set that’s dressy enough for a wedding or dinner out—and show how easily it can be styled down for more casual looks with a little creativity.
Shop your Closet
Before you rush out to purchase something new, take a moment to shop your own closet (check out your wardrobe staples)—you might be surprised by what’s already there. Look to your favorite sneakers, sandals, sweaters, or blazers for fresh styling ideas. Pull out those go-to bracelets, layered necklaces, or bold statement pieces and try using them in unexpected ways. Accessories are the pièce de résistance that can transform even the simplest outfit. Consider collecting unique vintage or one-of-a-kind accents—they add instant character and charm to any look.
Wedding or Evening Out
I am a big fan of the current matching set trend. When I spotted this two piece set on Mint Velvet, If you love red this outfit has it all, great texture, and infinite possibilities to dress up or down, and it comes in short, regular and long. I am wearing a size 6 short. If you don’t care for the cropped look order a regular. This outfit it pricey but beautifully made and fully lined. I could have probably worn a 4 in the top, but the pants fit perfectly in size 6.

You could easily wear this mint velvet pants and top to a garden or beach wedding. I am wearing a pair of old silver sandals (similar here) because I don’t wear heels. If you do you could add a pair of low heels or boots in the fall. I am carrying a vintage clutch and my necklace is by Paula Carvalho.
Casual Day Time Looks
Style the top with a pair of jeans, or the pants with a denim jacket for a casual day time look.

I love the juxtapositon of the rustic jeans and the guipure lace top for a casual look with my Artemis slippers.
Casual Day Looks

For a more casual outfit, a simple jean jacket , and vintage indigo mules can tone down the formality of the lace pants. The jean jacket shown is vintage Ralph Lauren. You can find several on eBay here. The jacket was embellished by Mermade Brooklyn. She does wonderful work.
Date Night

An inexpensive wrap from Mango,( I have it in green too) a vintage inherited native American necklace and colorful sandals make for a colorful ensemble.
Wine Tasting

This popular trench (a favorite of many of you) I find myself wearing a lot. Here I am styling it with my Artemis Design slippers, and pieces from my Native American jewelry collection.
Concert with Friends

This pretty yellow top from Mersea adds. a pop of fun to the ensemble along with my vintage indigo mules. These pants would be great with a white shirt tied at the waist as well, or untucked for that matter. The possibilities really are endless.
If you would love a red set, you can find a less expensive option for a shirt, and pants here at Gap.

Hi Cindy! Always love your fashion and style. Quick question, how do you decide how long your dresses should be. I am 5’3″ with large calves and do not like to show them. Any advise is greatly appreciated!
Thank you…
Cindy, you look fabulous in red! I love it on you.
So many great tips. I am a dress person, I just love the ease of pulling it on and accessorizing.
Love Mint Velvet! Great pieces.
Happy Weekend.
Hi Elizabeth
I would love dresses too if I weren’t so long waisted…my options are always limited!
Good explanation of the long waist dilemma. For some reason dresses are not made the woman with a long torso.
Hi Pat
Are you long waisted as well? I didn’t realize that!
I LOVE this post (even more than I love all your posts!) Thank you for the GAP alternative for a less costly
base. The denim jean jacket appears to be embellished. Has that jacker been posted earlier? I would love to see a close up photo. I love Mint Velvet, too.
Hi Patricia
Yes the jean jacket has been posted many times. It is a vintage Ralph Lauren jacket that I purchased on eBay and @mermadebrooklyn embellished it for me. Here is a link to a few of the jackets on eBay https://rstyle.me/+jQt-IdKlcM4muaYiD4YB5w. You can contact Meredith from Mermade Brooklyn here https://www.instagram.com/mermade_brooklynny/. I also placed the links on the blog. I didn’t link to the jacket because I could only find one, but several popped up today.
You’re rocking the red! I would wear it more but it seems in the last few years, I don’t find pieces I like in the right shade of red for me. I think it compliments your hair color better now than it would have when you were brunette.
Hi Wren
You are right! I never wore this red prior to being silver. I wore a more rusty red.
Of course my fave look is the one with the Rolla trench, which I am in LOVE with. BTW – I accidentally purchased that trench in XL (I thought it was a “junior” size..nope) and wasn’t able to return it. It’s a true size 12/14. If anyone is coveting it, I’ll give you a sale price! I’m wearing my size M allllll the time.
Hi Chris
Isn’t that trench the best? It was such a fluke that I found it locally. I wear mine all the time. If you don’t mind me using your email I will be happy to have anyone that is interested contact you in my Sunday favorites?
Hi Cindy,
I have a Mint Velvet shirt l bought when l was in London and they are a terrific brand the UK store John Lewis has a good selection. Love these outfits so gorgeous on you!!! I do the multiple ways of wearing a set with my Eileen Fisher pieces especially the matching linen pieces and the saturated colors. Happy weekend 🙂
Love the red outfit. A little too pricey for me but a great idea.
Cindy I love all of these looks! I get that Mint Velvet catalog and have been wondering how the quality is. Nice to know it’s good things. I should order something. This red look is unexpected in the lace and absolutely stunning on you. Super cute mixed all these different ways!

Oh how I can relate to that long waisted dilemma! I’ve been wearing the 2 piece skirt and top option for years. Add in the tummy issue and a thick waistline and it makes it a bit more challenging to find the perfect flattering style, which is why I prefer shopping in person rather than online.
Love your style Cindy. Another great post!
I just found Mint Velvet after a catalog came in the mail. They are new to me – cute stuff!!
Hi Gray
I know! A new fun find!!
You’ve mentioned this before — that you avoid dresses because you are long-waisted. I’ve never understood that comment. Wouldn’t that make wearing dresses even easier?
Hi Bette
Any dress with a waist hits me right under my “boobs” rather than at my waist, which is not very flattering. If they are not too short waisted on me I can disguise them with a wide belt, and create the allure of a lower waist. Otherwise I am limited to dresses without a defined waist which aren’t always the most flattering style on me either. Two piece outfits can be worn at my normal waist. Does that make sense? Anyone with a long waist understands!!
