Portugal Escape: Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent’s Farmhouse, Plus Four More Favorites This Week
I have been low key obsessed with Portugal for weeks now, and I blame Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent. Their new Architectural Digest feature sent me down a rabbit hole of stone farmhouses, azulejo tile, and vinho Verde, and I am not sorry about it. Here is what caught my eye this week.
1. Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent’s Portuguese Farm
Architectural Digest recently released the full Open Door tour of Nate and Jeremiah’s 400 year old farm in rural Portugal, and it is the kind of home that makes you want to sell everything and move to the countryside (I say this every time, I know). The couple spent nearly five years restoring the 18-acre property, which came with a chapel, an old bakery, and a two-story stone farmhouse, and it is now home to goats, sheep, and even a few peacocks. What gets me is the why behind it. Jeremiah is Portuguese, his parents are Portuguese, and this place is a love letter to that heritage, a true multigenerational home where his mother now lives in the renovated bakery. Brent told AD it was the hardest project he has ever shared publicly because it is so personal. I felt that. The best interiors are never really about the furniture; they are about what a place means to the people in it.

Steve and I have a genuine love affair with Portuguese food, and La Salette in Sonoma is our go to. If you have not been, you need to fix that immediately. It sent me looking for more, and now I cannot wait to try a few of these recipes from Food & Wine.

Cindy! Loved the AD spread on Nate and Jeremiah’s Portugal farmhouse … but seeing the entire home video tour I swooned all over again. The story behind their adventures in Portugal is lovely, especially Jeremiah’s mom being there full-time. Great timing on this post! We leave for Portugal in 3 days, will spend 12 days traveling around. It’s been on our bucket list for a long time. Never say never, but it will probably be our last overseas trip as I am 78 and my husband is 81. Way to go out with a bang!
I’ve been there a couple of times but unfortunately, only have photos for memories, not the names of most places. I suggest to make a day trip up to Porto and Castelo de Obidos. You can take the train for the trip. You would probably like the tile museum . I did a cooking class (where I cooked a whole octopus which I will never do again or even eat a bite of,
I’ve already told you, I think). Some of their wines are so light and refreshing you could share a bottle with Steve at lunch and not feel the slightest buzz.

Cindy! My favorite thing about our trip to Portugal was the ceramics and pottery! They have so many shops, and the prices are amazing! I almost want to go back just for the shopping! The food, too, was incredible, and again, the prices are amazing! We had so many great meals, not to mention more than our fair share of pastel de nata!

You would love Portugal! We did an amazing trip there and spent two weeks driving around. We spent a lot of time in the Algarve region which I loved. We ate dinner in this restaurant that was in a cave that you actually took an elevator down into – we ate right over the ocean!! it was really fabulous! I saved Design magazines and I have that same one. I’ve always loved that kitchen.!
I will have to check out that restaurant in Sonoma!

Cindy. Here is SoCal there is a large Portuguese-American community and the people and culture are wonderful. I had no idea that Jeremiah’s family came from Portugal until I read the AD article. This worked out well as his mother lives there now while they are off with their businesses. I do love your clothing picks and see that I have some of the ensemble components already in my closet..took you to show me! Tortoise is in but never went out so I am looking for some glasses for my table now. Thank you for this post!
I bet you’d love Portugal! My husband and I (from SLO) have been living in Porto for the last 16 months and pinch ourselves every day. Of course it has all the things you mentioned, the food, the scenery, the tiles, but, it’s the people that are at the top of our list for loving it so. They are warm, welcoming and could teach everybody a thing or two about contentment in life. Better come check it out!
Thank you for this great reminder about a place we need to visit again. We have been to Portugal twice, but only on cruise ships, so no more than 6 days total over two trips. Have been thinking about a Duoro river cruise. Loved Lisbon and Oporto, but for the latter it is EXTREMELY hilly. Easy to go down toward the water but very difficult to climb back up (for those of us now in our senior years – back then we weren’t yet). We loved it so much one wall in our kitchen has a 4 feet high mural of Portuguese tile of various garlands of fruit. Our home decor style is “world tour”.

What a magnificent place! I visited a friend in Portugal, the Algarve coast, years ago and fell in love with their style and way of life. Every day we woke up to fresh lemon water that had soaked all night and then fresh seafood, tapas, and delicious meals were plentiful. The ease of living shows in Nate’s abode and I bet that amazing table could tell a few stories. Thanks for this post, Cindy!
