How to Style One Denim Midi Dress Six Ways
If there’s one wardrobe staple that never fails to impress, it’s the denim midi dress. Today, I’m thrilled to show you how one versatile piece can effortlessly transform into six entirely different looks utilizing favorite items that you already own and love. Let’s chat about how to style one denim midi dress six ways
We all strive to shop smarter and make the most of our existing wardrobe, so when you invest in something new, choose pieces that offer versatility and can be styled multiple ways. When I stopped in Salon Roux/Roux Collective to get my haircut yesterday I spotted this denim dress and couldn’t resist bringing it home. It is beautifully made (at a good price point) and offers seasonless wardrobe possibilities. If you are local pop in. I think there were a couple left.
Self Belted With Boots

I am wearing a small that hits me a the lower calf. I am showing the belt wrapped twice, and tied in front for a modern look. I am wearing it with knee-high boots now, but later it would be worn with sneakers, ballet flats, loafers or sandals. I accessorized with tortoise accessories from Machete, a woven leather bag from Madewell and another crimson bandana tied at my neck.

Styled for Spring as a Dress

Here I am wearing the dress unbelted. This dress has such a flattering fit, it looks just great without a belt as well. I will remove the belt loops so I can enjoy it either way, or with another belt from my closet. Here I styled it with a wardrobe splurge, on sale from Crimson Cashmere (in Paris) Linda is out of this colorway currently, but I am sure she will restock for Spring. I always drool when I see Linda V Wright wear these fabulous oversized bandanas on Instagram.

Duster with Jeans

For a casual look, I am wearing the dress as a duster over a pair of jeans with a denim shirt accessorized with shoes and my recently gifted tote from Artemis Design Co. This tote has a removable cross body strap and leather handles that can be tucked inside the tote when carrying it crossbody style. You can find earrings very similar to my vintage Oscar Betz chandelier earrings from Rocki Gorman here.

Layered with a Cozy Sweater

I love this dress styled with my cozy vintage Ralph Lauren cardigan, boots and a hat. At the waist I switched out the belt for my vintage concho belt.

Worn as a Duster Over a Maxi Skirt

This outfit is a fun one.I styled the dress as a duster ( a good option instead of a leather jacket or similar) over a maxi skirt with the same chambray shirt. You could substitute a turtleneck for the chambray shirt, or add a lightweight maxi or a denim midi skirt and a white tee for Spring.

Topper Over a Midi Sweater Dress

I apologize for the poor picture, It was so windy when I took these pics that my hair blew in my face. Here I am wearing the dress as a topper over a midi sweater dress no longer available but Quince has a very similar one here with booties.

Hi Cindy….Love your blog and style. You do a wonderful job. I was wondering if you knew how to stretch a pair of Kilim shoes. My husband bought me a pair and they need to be stretched a bit. Thanks in advance for your help.
Hi Sue
I emailed you. I have to stretch all of my new shoes. Amazon has a stretcher spray and stretchers. They work great.
For anyone who purchased their midi dress/coat from Lulu’s: they are running an additional 40% off president’s day sale. I contacted customer service since I purchased before the holiday weekend and they knocked my final price down to $59.40.
Love the denim dress and all the wonderful ways to wear it. will be trying the soup recipe this week. thank you as always for your inspiration. I hope your pop up sale went beautifully.
Hi Deb
Missed you at the pop-up!! That soup is one of my absolute favorites!
This multipurpose dress/coat is such a find AND it wasn’t sold out everywhere! I managed to find a size chart on Nordstrom — US 10 = XL in this brand. Then got it on sale at Lulu’s, plus used a 15% off code. (Lulu’s was the tip off for me — generally a Junior size company. Glad I searched for a size chart) Squeeee! Trying to buy less this year YET: this coat fills a gap in my wardrobe and I think it’s a classic. Won’t go out of style…ever.
Hi Christine
Isn’t it fabulous? I was so surprised at how versatile it is. Of course I didn’t need it either but it fills a gap in my wardrobe too!
As usual every way you styled the dress looks great!!! it was hard for me to pass this one by, but I’m trying so hard not to buy anything !!
That was close…! Ships to Canada and there’s no fee since over $99…and even got a sale code…so even better .Then I reminded myself…I am editing …NOT adding. Have lots of great pieces that I already style…a la Cindy … which I enjoy. I think one reason for my pause , was looking at the way the patch pockets appear to add bulk across the bust. You look fantastic in it and have shown several great ways to style it, but I must use restraint. Besides, we Canadians are having conversations presently about where our purchases come from…at least for the foreseeable ( four) future . Sigh.
When I looked at the last picture, where you’re holding your hair away from your face, I was looking at your face could and seeing Summer’s face. She is definitly your mini-me.
I love this denim dress, so I ordered it, LOL. It’s rare I see anything I “must have,” so thanks for showing me something I know I’ll enjoy.
Hi Bette
Those were my thoughts exactly. I thought to myself…do I need this? I brought it home and realizes YES because it can be worn so many different ways. I do not think you will be disappointed. It is the best dress/trench/duster I have seen in denim. Love the shape, the buttons, the weight..it is just that good!
To follow up — I ordered on 6 Feb, it arrived on 8 Feb (!), and I absolutely love it. For any readers who think they might love this dress, I recommend buying it. Such a great price for a really high-quality item. Also — I am kind of neurotic/picky, and told myself I could always cut this off into a long jacket if it didn’t work for me. But it is perfect exactly as it is.
Love the denim dress and all your looks. My favorite is the first one and the Lauren sweater. So many options!
Hi Barb
Watch the resale sites for that sweater. There is one on Etsy now (very pricey) but mine wasn’t. That sweater works better with a dress than pants (on me) for some reason! I love it with the Artemis accessories too!!
I LOVE that denim dress/trench and I notice they ship to Australia. Is the denim soft or fairly stiff ?
Hi Prue
Boy we could get into a lot of trouble if we lived close together couldn’t we? The denim is not stiff but it has weight, so it holds it shape. I hope that helps.
Thanks Cindy.
Yes, trouble indeed. And here’s me trying to hold to the principle of 5 clothes purchases a year! The only problem with the dress that I can see is the Jack Russell pup that will no doubt hang off the hem!
Hi Cindy
Please let me know how I order the long patchwork bandana? Directly from Crimson Cashmere? Could not find the longer bandana online — thank you
Love your posts
Irene Bowman
Hi Irene
I believe Linda is out of them right now. I would DM them on Instagram, or call. She regularly has them in several colors. Aren’t they wonderful. I got mine on sale!
Hi Cindy,
Great denim midi dress styled six ways, as only you can creatively do so well.
Hi Katherine
Thank you so much. I think that dress would be great with sneakers in the Spring as well.
Cindy!
Every creation from your dark denim dress is incredible on you! Thank you for the inspiration as I decide what items to add to my capsule wardrobe this spring.
Hugs from the frigid PNW,
Diney
Hi Diney!
It has been cold here too! That dress/trench/duster is sooo good.
Great post! Love the dress.
You need it Gray!!
Love, love, love! This is my absolute favorite type of post that you do. You look fabulous in all of the pix. I’m ready to run out and buy a denim midi dress and long crimson velvet skirt myself.

These types of posts are the most fun for me as well. It forces me to be creative in my own wardrobe!!
Gorgeous dress on you Cindy!! Thank you for the many ways, they all look so good!! I bought the large brown scarf, as like you,I adore Linda’s posts on Instagram and I love following her and hearing her views on things. Have a beautiful day. We had rain all night here in southern California and it feels so fresh and clean outside. Say hello to Scout from me xo
Hi Francesca
I have been trying to talk Linda into doing Ageless Style for years…so far no luck!! I adore her style. If I can ever drag my husband to Paris I hope to visit her shop!!
This is my favorite post of your so far! I love the idea of wearing something many different ways and utilizing what we already have in our closets. You look fabulous in all of these outfits. Thank you for the inspiration!
