I highlighted this trend in my post: 10 Perfect Fall Fashion Trends for Women Over 50 here. I will feature more of my favorites in the coming weeks.

Lenny Kravitz’s iconic oversized scarf became a viral sensation on TikTok, with fans playfully recreating his bold, exaggerated look . Not many of us could pull this off. You can read more about the evolution of this scarf here in this article by Mr. Porter.

The Cozy Blanket Wrap

Drape the large scarf loosely over your shoulders and let it cascade down your body, creating a simple, cozy look perfect for a casual outfit on chilly days. You could also tie it at the back of your neck for fun. If you are petite, this is a tougher look to pull off.

Sweaters as Scarves for Extra Layers

For the trendy sweater-as-scarf look, casually drape the sweater over your shoulders and tie the sleeves in a loose knot at the front or side for a chic, layered effect. This could add dimension to a tonal look. Leave a longer end for interest. You could also anchor it with a pin. You can read more about this trend here.

Here I draped my favorite cashmere sweater from Mersea over the shoulders of my Frank and Eileen Tuscan Travel Set. The tassel birdies are no longer available but you can find them on Poshmark here, or on eBay here.

I am not sure I will be embracing all the crazy options viewed in the fall runways, but I might try a toned-down version of  this look from Michael Kors (photographed by Launchmetrics Spotlight).

Belted Scarf Look

Wrap the scarf around your neck and belt it at the waist. This is a great way to add shape to oversized outfits, under blazers or long coats to define the waist.

The wool scarf above is from Banana Republic and sold out, but there is a very nice similar one on Amazon here.

Poncho Style

Let the oversized scarf hang loose, almost like a poncho for an effortless look. Pair with fitted pants or skirts to balance the volume on top.

Oversized Boho Look

Wrap the scarf loosely around your shoulders for a more free-spirited vibe. Great with flowy dresses or wide-leg pants for a carefree, artistic look. You could also tie the long ends together in the back for the oversized blanket scarf look. This particular look is hard to pull off if you are petite (especially if the scarf is the size of an actual blanket ha ha). The huge scarf can appear to be wearing you!

Crossed and Tied at the Waist-Jacket Style

This is one of my favorite ways to style a scarf and one that I get the most questions about. It is great for defining your waist with a midi dress, dress, skirt, or wide-leg pants. Take the ends of the scarf, cross them in front, and tie them in the back. You can see more of this look in my post How to Embrace the Quiet Luxury Trend here.

This skirt is actually a libeco throw that I often wear as a skirt. This particular throw is no longer available but you can find similar at Libeco Home here. My leather moto jacket is ancient but I have linked a similar one below. You can find the Gentle Souls boots on Amazon here.

Pinned with a Brooch

Pinning an oversized scarf with a brooch adds interest and secures it, elevating your look with a personal vintage vibe.

This is an easy way to add a pop of color to a basic outfit and take it to the next level.

  1. I have some wonderful scarves that I’m going to pull out again. I was sad to see them go out of style. Grateful I held onto them. You wear them well.

  2. I am all in on the oversized scarf, Cindy. Can’t get enough of them—and , capes, ponchos…anything that drapes, especially cashmere. As always, you look fab in all of them! Loving the shopping tips too! xx

    1. Hi Jeanne

I wear them whether they are “in style” or not but for those of us that love them…they are more available when “in style”

  3. Cindy-
Loved this post! I also love scarves! Great ideas on how to wear them.
I have said it before, but the first picture of you looks just like Summer!! How lucky she is!!
Thanks for all of your great tips & ideas!

  4. You look amazing in your large scarves. I know we’re the same height but for some reason they don’t look as good on me.

  5. You wear scarves well!
    All good looks on you.
I tend to wear watching TV at night as I get cold a lot.Not so much out and about.

    1. Hi Eliz
I am surprised you don’t wear scarves. Your neck is usually covered with beautiful baubles instead!!

  6. Do you find that the BIrdies loafers run true to size? I know you have problematic feet. I am looking at Birdies, Rothy and Vivaia for slip on animal print “loafers” but they are online so no “try on”

    1. Hi Ginger

Yes birdies are definitely true to size. I love the looks of Vivia but they are a bit tight on my bunion. I find Rothy’s to be unc0mfortable on the bunion as well. If you don’t have that issue they are all great shoes. The birdies have more cushion and room in the toebox.

  7. You are so clever with the way you use scarves, big and small. I try them but they end up bugging me when around my neck or they won’t stay put. I have some beautiful silk ones that are especially tricky to work with and I don’t wear them, unfortunately. I do like to tie them around my shoulders in what I consider a preppy look. Thanks for the style ideas and maybe I’ll try again when the weather cools. Again, you’re my inspiration!

    1. Hi Wren

I am a bit obsessed with scarves I have to admit!! I totally get it you either love them or loathe them!!

  8. It’s hard to think about scarves when it’s still in the 90’s and 100’s but yesterday I cleaned out the coat closet !!! So very timely post. 🩷
