Today I am joining my pal Jennifer for our monthly Fashion Over 50 Edit. This month we are tackling scarves. After my post, My Favorite Ways to Style a Shawl, many of you asked for a scarf styling post. So here it is Eight Stylish Ways to Style a Scarf. I hope you will find a favorite!
EIGHT STYLISH WAYS TO STYLE A SCARF
I thought it would be most helpful if I wore the same outfit (sweater from J Jill which is on sale by the way) so that you could see which scarf style suits you best. I am styling a rectangular scarf (because I think they are the most versatile). It is an old scarf from Echo, but I have linked one below the post that is in the same colorway but even better. Sorry, it was so windy out during photos (messy hair). I am wearing my comfy velvet birdies, j jill leggings, and earrings, and (similar bracelets)from Etsy.
One of my favorites is belted at the waist. As I have stated before, it is the only small thing on my body so naturally I like this style. I also think the scarf can foil for an expensive jacket.
This is a version I don’t wear enough, I don’t know why. Basically, you just throw one end over the shoulder. You can pin it in place if you are concerned about it falling down.
This is another version I forget about that can also be very slimming even if you don’t have a small waist. It creates the illusion of a smaller waist. This style looks better with a crew neck or turtleneck ideally but I wanted to use the same outfit for simplicity’s sake.
I literally never personally wear this version but I see it often on others and it is more flattering. Fold the scarf in half lengthwise and tie behind the neck. Super simple.
I wear this version quite often. It is what I call the double loop. Instyle has a great tutorial on scarves here. It is a quick visual without having to go watch a lengthy Youtube video.
I like this knotted version if you are wearing a jacket and you just want to add a little bit of pattern and or color.
I wear this version a lot too. Make sure you have a lightweight scarf for this one or you will look like the pillsbury doughboy. Trust me I have done it before.
Lastly the simple over one shoulder look. This is another look that can be worn with a sweater for just a splash of pattern or color.

Hi Cindy,
I was not clear in my communication. I was asking after “Get The Look” the first scarf
what store is that from.
I so enjoyed your post and the varied ways you styled the scarves.
Anna says
Cindy, I really enjoyed this post! Can you share the lipstick you were wearing? It looks great with the colors you are wearing.
Katherine says
what store is the first black and white scarf purchased from please.
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Katherine
If you are speaking of the one I am wearing, it is several years old. I have no idea where I purchased it. I believe it was an echo scarf but it isn’t available from their site or on Ebay. That’s why I selected alternatives.

Thanks, Sarah I always appreciate support from one of my chicest friends!!

Cindy, such great looks! I’m curious about the belted look, particularly the view from the back. Is the scarf large enough that it reaches down your back far enough to be tucked into the belt? Or is it belted only in front and on the sides? I hope that makes sense!
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Sarah
Now that is a good question, I don’t tuck it into the belt although you could. It does reach the belt if that helps.
Sarah says
Makes sense, thank you!!

Dear Cindy, Just love all those ways to wear a scarf!! Living in Florida does not “allow” us to wear scarfs for another couple of months when it cools down…our lows are in the mid 70s with high humidity!! Thanks fo the great ideas and suggestions!!

We are heading to Florida in a week since we had to cancel our Hawaiian trip. We will find out first hand about the heat and humidity!

The other day, a neighbor brought over a big bag of green beans from his garden. I tried to be happy but I don’t love green beans. I used the gremolata recipe, WOW, so good!!! We all loved it, even though I forgot almonds or pine nuts.
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Nancy
My sister (who was a wonderful cook) shared that recipe years ago. I always use it. It is definitely my family’s favorite. I am so glad you are now a green bean convert!!

Wonderful tutorials Cindy!! I’m going to have to try using my belts more often. It looks so fabulous on you. Great fun this month.

Isn’t it funny how we can give each other ideas!

Curious if you’re wearing a petite or regular size in the sweater. I’m 5’3” and never know which to order! Thought it would be a nice option going into fall here in Texas where our heat lasts forever!
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Susan
It is a regular small and I probably could have worn the medium too. I find J Jill to run large sometimes but this one was true to size. i think you will like that sweater. It washes beautifully too if you air dry it.
Susan says
Thank you, that helps!
Joanna says
You have amazing style Cindy! I love the belted scarf. So chic!
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Joanna
You ladies inspire me to be more creative!

I LOVE wearing scarves and probably have too many. I live in Michigan, so in late fall and winter, it’s almost a necessity. I love all of these versions. My question is…is the belted scarf the same one (size) that you have wrapped tighter around your neck? It just looks like the belted would be too large to also be around your neck.
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Judy
I am so sorry the link is fixed now
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Judy
Yes, they are all the same scarf. I believe the scarf is acrylic. I really like the lightweight scarves. I find them to be much more versatile.
Nanette says
Where is the link for the scarf that you recommend?
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Nanette
I was editing in two different places and the link disappeared. It is fixed now. See Get the Look

Hi Kim
So sorry! I fixed it!

Cindy,
You look great. I am so ready for autumn. I love the scarf belted at the waist. It truly looks like a jacket and it looks so pretty with the mustard gold sweater. I’ll be saving this post for inspiration for scarves.
xo,
Karen

Hi Karen
Sometimes we just need a little reminder of how versatile scarves can be!
