10 Perfect Fall 2024 Fashion Trends for Women Over 50

Fall 2024 is here, and with it comes a fresh wave of fashion trends. The beauty of being our age is we are no longer slaves to trends. Many are just silly. After 50, style becomes a celebration of confidence and experience. After reading every article I could find on the topic, I did find a few trends we could actually welcome should we choose to. Most of us prefer to embrace timeless styles that aren’t seen on the runways. Let’s dive into Perfect Fall 2024 Fashion Trends for Women Over 50. Google wanted me to use the word perfect. He hates the word practical!

Today I am joining my pals Jennifer from a Well Styled Life and Susan from Une Femme d’ un Certain Age for their takes on the fall fashion trends for women over 50.

I’m loving the rich greens, luxurious textures, and the personality driven accessories that define Fall 2024 fashion trends.

Western Inspired Fall Trend

I have always had a soft spot for anything western inspired. It is a uniquely American style. Ralph Lauren always has a few western inspired items in his lineup. Remember his RL Country label? I drooled over every item. These items command high prices in the resale market because they are good and uniquely us.

Ralph Lauren photographed by James Harvey-Kelly

I have had cowboy boots for years. Unfortunately, in the move mine mistakenly (along with my other boots) got rerouted to the Goodwill. This year I am eyeing a bootie style and a traditional version. The brand Ariat carries comfortable (the ones that now reside at the Goodwill) versions that also come in wide widths (in case you have bunions like me). They also support groups like Folds of Honor, Americas Gold Star Families, Homes for Wounded Warriors, Skills USA and more. You can find out more on their giving page here.

Comfort is key for me, so I have my eye on the heritage western boot, (for skirts)and the darlin western bootie for jeans and pants.

Oversized Scarf Fall Trend

Women’s Wear Daily coins the return of the oversized scarf “swaddle season”. You know I am a scarf girl through and through. If you are smitten as well you might enjoy my post How to Transform your Look Simply with a Scarf, or Eight Stylish Ways to Style a Scarf .

Banana Republic Oversized Cashmere Poncho

I am loving this oversized cashmere poncho from Banana Republic on sale here. Quince has some beautiful reasonably priced cashmere wraps here, and some beautiful scarf coats here.

Blazers with Hourglass Shapes Fall Trend

Blazers with these silhouettes are really enjoying a moment and I am unboard. Our lifestyle is very casual here in Paso so I often wear mine with shirts and denim pants, loafers, or sneakers.

I am a huge fan of the Rag and Bone Slade Blazer (which I consider very flattering) I have one in olive green (purchased on sale) wool and recently scored a camel one on eBay. You can find several on eBay here, or Poshmark here.

American Classics tweeds, herringbones, american suiting

I am considering adding one of these to y fall wardrobe. I don’t wear a lot of pattern but I appreciate it on others. You can pair them with a tank, tee or button-down shirt, and a pair of trousers or jeans.

Lauren Ralph Lauren Herringbone Blazer

I am loving this great looking Lauren Ralph Lauren herringbone blazer and it is on sale at Macy’s here.

Brooks Brothers has a beautiful jacket on sale here.

Faux and or Upcycled Fur

What’s not to like about anything “furry”. Etsy has many upcycled fur options here. Nordstrom has a great Donna Salyers Faux Fur Jacket that doesn’t look faux here.

Big “Personality Driven” Accessories

I love anything collected, or the new take, “personality driven” ,in the home and the wardrobe. Make your jewelry and other accessories your own by purchasing artistic one of a kind or vintage accessories that tell your story. If you haven’t read my post How to Make your Style your Own with Unique Accessories, you might enjoy it.

My turtleneck in this picture is old, old! Quince has a similar version here at a great price point. My boots are from Bedstu here.

Green is Back in a Big Way

All shades of green may be the color of the year. I am a big fan of olive green, but pick your fave and enjoy.

Over 50 Style Blogger Cindy Hattersley in cp-shades-lily-skirt-BR-turtleneck-feed-bag

The handbag in this look is from FEED (a great company), but no longer available. The lily skirt is from CP Shades. This color is not currently online, but if you contact them there may be one in the stores. There are several on eBay here. I wear an XS in this skirt but I could wear a small as well. My comfortable booties are from Gentle Souls here. The turtleneck is from Spanx and can be found here.

Matching Sets

I am loving this versatile trend which seems to be continuing into fall. You might enjoy my post 25 Best Ways to Style Matching Sets here.

Frank and Eileen Tuscany Set

I have worn this Tuscan Getaway Set from Frank and Eileen multiple times.

COS Matching Set

I have my eye on this set from COS that also comes in different colors including black, and beige if green isn’t your jam. COS has many other combinations with sweater vests here as well. I would wear this ensemble with knee high boots belted, or for a more casual look with sneakers as is. This outfit would be great for travel.

Turtlenecks

I didn’t know they ever went away. Apparently tissue weight turtlenecks are enjoying a moment. Did you stop wearing turtlenecks? Neither did I.

Footwear

Apparently biker boots (I am going to stick with my combat boots), Mary Janes and loafers (have they ever gone out?) remain strong. I haven’t jumped on the mary jane bandwagon. Nothing cute really suits me (again love them on others), but this pair from Rag and Bone has enough edge to balance the cuteness. I don’t wear heels so I like these options.

  1. What a great group of looks for Fall! Most of these looks are pieces I can pull from my closet. This fall I am styling as many looks as I can with my denim shirt. Yesterday I started a list of making it look fresh and new. Today’s blog gave me some additional ideas. Bold jewelry, a beautiful big scarf and I will be good to go. My big splurge is to be a double breasted, long, dark green coat. The Farmer’s Almanac predicts a cold, wet winter and I must say we are due. My 3year old olive jacket, (which I bought from one of your blogs) has unfortunately but the dust-I have worn it constantly! So I need to find a good replacement. Thank you again for all the great ideas and your excellent content!

  2. Cindy fun post. I am not ready for fall, but I love thinking about fall clothes.. My favorite season. I loved that Rag& Bone blazer you have. I want another I have the black. Also adore the herringbone one.
The big scarves are great! You always make them look chic.. and all these looks on you are great inspiration!!
I’m actually looking forward to cooler weather and have jeans on today. Yay. xo

    1. Hi Kim

It must have cooled off there today as well. We are enjoying low 80’s and 70’s now. I am not ready to give up Summer at all. You are the one that convinced me to buy the Rag and Bone Slade blazer. I found the camel one on eBay. They are so flattering. Thanks pal for convincing me to take the plunge! I am a scarf person whether they are in or out of style. I just love them

    2. Only one older male model, but isnt the Western attire always in style for him, esp in the SW….
I just found a bracelet turquoise tiles with other colors on those old flexotwist bands from the 90s (it had fallen behind desk!)
I am going to wear it on those occasions i go out, as i gave up wearing most jewelry since the oughts as an older male but since it is trending why not? Us older Gen X & Boomers went through some really groovy eras, wow!

  3. Hi Nancy

We all absolutely need to own our own style and wear what we feel best in.

  4. I am desperate for a smart , classic look for my 76 years young. I love the styles you’ve shown. I’m on a tight budget as my husband is in long term care and disposable income is miniscule. I will search the outlets and second hand options for a smart versatile wardrobe.
Thank you for your style and care for the mature woman.

    1. Well hello 76 years young Nancy!

I am so glad you enjoyed this post. I love the classics with an artistic spin, and it sounds like you do as well.

  5. Ordered the Gentle Souls boots which arrived today , my second pair and so comfortable.
Also took a leap of faith and am now awaiting my order of the Olive Slade blazer from eBay, I did size up as you suggested so fingers crossed !

    1. Gentle Souls are the best I really think they need to promote more. So many of the shoes brands claim are “comfortable” really are not

  6. Hi Cindy,
Beautiful looks so exciting, thank you for the links to the jackets on sale too. I am on a diet so l might curtail shopping until l feel more in control! Have a lovely weekend xo

    1. Hi Francesca

I definately need to lose a few pounds as well.. I never want to say I am on a “diet”. I know what I need to do eat less and excersise more, right?

  7. Given that we’re just finishing winter here, it’s daunting to say the least, to see what the ‘trends’ are for our next winter (May-September 2025). I’ll just keep wearing the same old same old from the wardrobe because I’m trying not to follow fast fashion and cause landfill.
I love ballet flats and stylish boots, hate Mary Janes and heavy loafers, like a refined toe and good leather. And with wonky feet, the styles need to work hard as well as being elegant.
No greens for me. I’ll stick with shades of blues. But I love taupes, caramels, greys and animal prints. In other words, Cindy, just the way you always look spectacular.
I’d really like to see more fashion blogs do more on ‘shopping the closet’. Susan After 60 does it really well as does High Heels in the Wilderness.
In the southern hemisphere, that other part of the planet which takes up half the globe and which fashion writers of all types seem to forget – we’re entering summer where brights, whites and whatever takes your fancy will be colouring our lives.
I’ve ordered nothing for spring/summer apart from a new La Blanca swimsuit, a couple of long linen overshirts from Target for beach cover-ups and a new hat from the Australian Cancer Council. Maybe I’ll invest in another pair of Vivaia shoes because they’re seriously like walking on a cloud. I can’t recommend them highly enough.
Meanwhile, thank you for being a style inspiration; I’m back to shopping my closet – toodles!

    1. Hi Prue. Another Aussie here (new to this website). I have been eyeing off the Vivaia shoes, but there is no shop in Adelaide. Are they true to size and what style would you recommend? Am a bit bored with Frankie 4 and Rollies, but need shoes with arch support. Thank you

      1. Hi Susan

I have tried some of the Viviana shoes. If you have bunions like me I would not recommend but otherwise they are great!

      2. Hi Susan, no shop here in Tasmania either, so I buy them online. True to size . I only wear the Margot style which has proved hugely successful with a high instep, wide foot, regular corns etc. I can wear them all day. And their colour range is brilliant.

        1. We are a community here and sharing is what we do! I have not featured the Vivaia’s but once because they are too narrow for me and rub the darn bunion. I have the audrey loafers that I can wear for short periods. I should stretch them! I do have a pair of the boots that I could probably wear if I could get them worn in. I also have a very practical vivaia bag https://rstyle.me/+WCqmA6RaGnhR91pyX8l9sA that I often carry. I notice they have it in Olive Green (one of my favorite colors). It can be worn crossbody or as a shoulder bag. I should probably give them another try

          1. Thank you both for replying to my question. I’ll do an online order for the Vivaia’s and see how they go. Am very glad to have found this blog (through Jennifer, a well styled life). I am somewhat bowled over by just how stylish you are Cindy and need to lift my game a bit

          2. Hi Susan

Oh my goodness Susan …as I sit here in my sweats…not very glamorous at all! I have to up my game due to you all. You keep me in line. I just hung up with Jennifer on the phone actually! She works very hard and does an excellent job with her blog. I learn from her all the time. She is a teacher. I just wing it!!

  8. Determining my style as I approach sixty has been daunting to say the least. However classy, flattering, and effortless makes up the gold standard for me. I love the olive green set and am in love with the shoes paired with it. I purchased a similar navy set this spring and loved the idea of not having to coordinate an outfit. I have never been too into the Mary Janes but like the look of the square toed in neutrals, so I may just give them a try. As far as greens, they are a new love for me. Awesome options Cindy! Thank you!

  9. I’m not seeing anything there for me.
    Oversized scarfs would swamp me.
Western wear is not my style, mostly because of where I live.
I love the fitted blazers but live a casual lifestyle that doesn’t really include them.
I’ve never liked Mary Janes, just too precious. I had biker boots when I rode but sold them about six years ago. They had a purpose. To buy a pair now would seem silly. Hey! Where’s your Harley?!
I used to love turtlenecks but now feel like they are choking me so I donated all of mine last year.
I’m not sure about the matching sets. 🤔
Other than olive green, I’m not really into greens. I still like my utility jacket even if not trending.
I guess I will sit out fall 2024 new trends.

    1. Hi Joanna

Mary Janes are not for me either but I love them on others! Trends are just that a reference. If they aren’t for you, sit them out as you said!!

    2. I’m 100% feeling like that.
None of the above styles suit my personality or my lifestyle.
That’s ok though, I’d rather shop my closet and stay with my tried and true…
Denim, cashmere and comfy boots that are timeless and chic.
Let’s keep the 60’s rolling in classy and effortless style.

  10. Love your looks, Cindy and so happy I found your blog. I just wish I lived in a seasonal climate, (did once) because I would adore wearing those outfits. However, I have come to terms with linen -somewhat oversized and not inexpensive is the clue. And, then-forget about it!
    Thanks so much!!

    1. Hi Susan

We can wear linen for long seasons here as well. I feel like I go from sandals directly to boots!

  11. Cindy,
I just want to thank you for your detailed posts. I look forward to reading them and I have learned a lot.
You have amazing, eye catching style. Your confidence is inspiring.
    Kathy

  12. You know I enjoy your posts, Cindy, and this one is a winner ! For ages I have kept two slightly fitted blazers for a reason…one is wheat coloured a tweed and the other a subtle check …for those dry fall 🍁days. Soft Autumn colours are for me ,and I will be trying newer ways of wearing each one. Having gone down in weight ( grey divorce does that …an unexpected plus!) , I am having fun editing my wardrobe…and experiencing renewed confidence at 74! I also took the plunge and tried very light ( tissue?) turtle neck tops …no added bulk , so useful under a top layer like a longer sweater or blazer. Filling boxes 📦📦 every day for the mid September move, so not exactly fashion forward these days , but once finally settled, I expect to be feeling and looking fabulous! 😀👍Ha!

      1. Never cared for scarfs, blazers,or turtlenecks. Olive green is one of my favorite colors, along with turquoise blue, rust, brown, and denium.
I’ve seen older women wear boots and can hardly walk. I don’t wear them.
I think one should wear what they feel comfortable in and not follow trends.

        1. Hi Carol

I love boots but every pair I own are comfortable. I don’t wear heels unless they are tiny, but I would like to have a pair of cowboy boots to wear on occassion!

    1. Hi Cath

I love your attitude!!! You inspire me. You will be looking and feeling fabulous!!

    2. I expect you will be better than you’ve ever been. Sending encouragement and faith. Life can only get better.

      1. Rose can I just say I love you guys for your shout out to Cath…that is why I call this a community because of people like you

  13. Love that Rag & Bone blazer — but I am curious about sizing as I am in Canada and can’t seem to find them here. What size did you purchase and how do you find their fit?

    1. Hi Lisa

I would say size up. My blazers are are both Size 8 and I normally wear a 6. I am overweight currently but the 8 fits me perfect. For reference I am 5’4 130.

  14. The western themed belts, boots, jackets, etc. reminded me of an aged book called Cheap Chic which I used to style my thrift shop and Army surplus store attire during college at UCSanta Barbara! Here it is all again. OMG! Then I was on the GI Bill n the late 70s and this allowed rummaging through sidewalk sales and student giveaways also. What goes around comes around and I love it..permission to take out the old tweed jacket and Army surplus field jacket..add jeans and a scarf!

    1. Hi Dianne

You certainly have my permission. I bought an army looking surplus jacket last year and I love it. It’s funny my readers that were in the military despise combat boots and utility jackets. They had to wear them too long!

  15. “Further reading for a little humor” was more than a LITTLE humor – I got a chuckle just looking at some of them! WOW

  16. Such a great post Cindy! You make me want some classic Ralph Lauren. His western styles are so appealing. I couldn’t agree more about the unique accessories and am looking forward to adding a few more pieces to my collection. I’ve bought my first green dress and excited to bring it into fall! I love your take on the fall trends.

  17. All great looks !
Admiring the handbag in the “Green is Back in a Big Way” photo.
Can you tell us about it ?

    1. Hi Jan yes it is from FEED and no longer available sadly. They do have a similar canvas version. I am traveling but if ou send me an email K will contact them as see if there is any chance they will bring it back. Love every thing about that bag and is the perfect size

    1. Hi Erin

I linked the turtlenecks. The high low turtleneck in the all black photo is no longer available but I linked a similar one. Hope that helps!

  18. Hi Cindy,
I am loving your posts. I am petite so I am glad you post styles and places to buy for petites.
Alo, I have a bunion. I would like to see post about cute and stylish shoes and boots that are comfortable.
    I love the greens also.
Thanks for sharing with all of us mature ladies.

    1. Hi Sherrie

I do a post on comfortable shoes every season and I have one coming up for fall. Here is a link to all of my comfortable shoes posts https://cindyhattersleydesign.com/?s=comfortable+shoes. I do not wear heels and I do have a bunion so I am all about comfort. Fyi if you are looking for anything on my blog type what you are looking for in the search box and they will populate!

  19. Hi Cindy: I look forward to your posts. This one was very enlightening for me and I had a major epiphany! All the dos and don’t, ie wear statement jewelry, don’t wear bulky necklaces, no oversized, oversized it etc etc…. Bottom line…. Wear what you like, what flatters your shape and reflects your personality regardless of who says it’s in or not. I saw beautiful outfits here that broke another contributors rules but they were fabulous! I loved all the ideas! Also loved the olive skirt you were wearing! Do you mind sharing where we might find similar? Finally thanks so much for sharing RL commitment to our veterans! I volunteer with service dogs for disabled veterans and I was so thrilled to see these other organizations supporting our men and women who have sacrificed so much for us! I’m saving this post!!!! Barbara

    1. Hi Barbara

So glad you enjoyed the post. Jennifer and Susan knocked it out of the park. They both are much more well versed on the fashion scene than I. I think all three of us agree with what you said. At our age it is nice to check out trends, but own your own style. Don’t stop wearing what you love unless it is so dated it looks silly. The most stylish women I know do not follow trends. Grab something you love from a new trend if you think it has longevity. If you want to indulge in a funky trend don’t spend a lot of money on it because next year it might look silly.

  20. I’m all for green shades and a wrap…especially for travel. Thanks for this!

    1. You look great in green Mary Ann but I know you have to be careful with wraps because of your size.

  21. Oh, Ralph Lauren western-inspired styles…how I covet those! Great roundup, Cindy!!

    1. Hi Susan

I learned so much from both you and Jennifer’s posts. What’s not to love about Ralph?!!

  22. Cindy—I love olive/army green, especially since it works well with both denim and black. I’m looking for a great army/utility/anorak jacket that can span the seasons. Any recommendations? Thanks for grounding me! 🙄 Donna

  23. Cindy — Love, love love your all-black outfit with the turquoise statement jewelry! You look amazing. Thanks for this fall update.

  24. Cindy

I love all of these looks ~ Annie Hall had nothing on you!

Hope you are doing well and surviving the summer.
    Amanda
