Five Things I’m Loving in NYC Right Now
As always, I am joining my pals Mary Ann and Annie for our Sunday faves. I am still in New York for something I will share very soon. In fact, my daughter and I are meeting Annie tomorrow for lunch. In the meantime, let’s chat about five things that I’m loving in NYC right now.
1. Free days with my daughter
She didn’t come to work. She has her own career, her own life. She came because it was her birthday and we could spend my days off together exploring New York. No schedule, just the two of us deciding what we felt like doing and then doing it. At this stage, that kind of uncommitted time together is a total luxury.
2. The Staten Island Ferry
We had a few free hours, and Jenna said let’s take the Staten Island Ferry for no reason other than it’s free and the skyline from the water is unbeatable. No agenda, no reservation, just the two of us leaning on the railing watching the Statue of Liberty go by like tourists, which, fine, we were. Sometimes the best thing on the itinerary is the thing that isn’t really an itinerary item at all.
3. The 9/11 Memorial
One of the most powerful things I have ever experienced outside of the Holocaust museum in Washinton D.C. It is difficult but so well done. Standing at the edge of those pools, reading the names, I found myself thinking less about that day and more about how a city carries its history. It’s not a stop you love in the way you love a good meal. We went thinking we would spend an hour or hour and a half. We spent over three and only gave up because we just couldn’t do anymore. It’s a stop that stays with you but makes you proud to be an American.
4. Dumbo, Brooklyn
Cobblestones underfoot, with and incredible view of the Manhattan Bridge framed like it was built for Instagram. Timeout Market, and amazing restaurants with incredible views of the water. Dinner at ABC kitchens was a perfect way to end the day.
5. Central Park in late August
New York gives you a park like this in the middle of everything and somehow that never stops feeling generous. Picture perfect in mid-August.
6. Cheater #6-MJ the Musical
I said five and I meant it, mostly. But we caught MJ on Broadway Friday night, and I can’t leave it off the list even if it breaks the math. Electrifying, start to finish. What got us were the performances of Michael himself at each stage of his life. We left the theater buzzing,
Outfits of the Week (because I know you all hate it when I exclude this)
I imagine the leaves turning in Central Park next month. If I were there, I would be wearing this!
I have to admit for whatever reason I have not spent much time in NYC. My daughter has spent some serious time in the city, so it was so fun to trek to the places she had been and the places she wanted to see. We have managed to log about 18,000 steps per day. Today, I have work for about an hour in the morning, then we are off to meet Annie and explore some more. Monday I will be filming for something I will be sharing around Christmas!

I loved to see the picture of YOU and Jennna together in NYC. Nothing takes the place of shared time just the two of you soaking up life experiences in NY. Touring 911 memorial must have stirred up some deep emotions, sobering to say the least. Theater in NYC is a must and the best. I have two of my dearest friends and they both a big theater people. Travel to NY to see theater, two in one day, they adore it.
So nice you got to see your gal pal, Annie.

This time together sounds lovely, Cindy. I was just looking at photos from our trip to NY in 2024. We live in Auckland, New Zealand so it was a big event ! Can I make a suggestion? The Tenement Museum ( in the Lower East side from memory ) is worth looking into – a unique experience & in a way quite moving. We were so glad we went.

So glad you and Jenna got some time to just be together. I think once your have a family, you never get that with your parents. I know I didn’t and regret it. So nice you are exploring NYC and seeing Annie!

How magical to be with your daughter in NYC making memories, and you get to see Annie!! I went a couple of years ago as my daughter was working in NYC with her new husband and she had a “company” apartment very near the Brooklyn Bridge which was fabulous as I don’t know Brooklyn at all and loved it.

I’ve travelled to NYC more than any other place. Partly because of work; partly because it’s a world class city; fortunate that it’s a one hour flight away. As for 9/11, I just saw on news last night that this anniversary is the 25th. They were showing many videos of that day. As someone who was transfixed in front of the tv, and a brother who was working at the courthouse a few blocks from the Twin Towers………nonetheless those videos I saw last evening were a shocking reminder of how awful it all was. And I thought to myself that we have teenage grandkids who don’t know anything much about it. And I agree: the two most “silent”, haunting museums, and ones I think every one should visit, are the 9/11 memorial and the Holocaust museum.

I picture myself with my daughter, doing exactly the same things as you did in New York City!!! The only word to describe that kind of time that I can come up with is precious and it is not quite good enough. It’s been years since I’ve been to New York City. I’d love to do it again just like you and Jenna did with my daughter.

Thank you for the lovely pictures of NYC. I grew up in Staten Island and rode the ferryboat to work for many years. You brought back many good memories and some sad ones (9/11) for me. So glad you and your daughter had a good time in my home town.
