Sunday Fab Five-Mark Sikes, Studio McGee and More

Happy Sunday everyone.  Yesterday we actually saw a little bit of sun which was lovely.  Hopefully, the change in weather will aid the firefighters in their work to contain the fires that are ravaging the West Coast.  On Sundays, Mary Ann, Annie, and I like to lighten things up with our Sunday Fab Five.  We feature five things that caught our attention last week.  Let’s grab a cup of coffee and take a look at my Sunday Fab Five-Mark Sikes, Studio McGee and More.

ONE- MORE BEAUTIFUL MARK SIKES

What can I say other than it is More Beautiful.  Mark is a master at layering fabrics and textures with a preference of blue and white. My favorite project in his new book is the Portola Valley home that had been damaged by fire. This particular project features more of a nature-inspired palette of greens, browns, and tans, with less of his favored blue and white.  There is something just restful and gorgeous about this home.

You can read more about this particular project in the Elle Decor article Tour a Rebuilt and Refurbished California Home Damaged by Fire, but I would highly recommend buying his new book More Beautiful it is out now.  He uses more pattern than I personally would, but he is just so good at what he does, you can learn so much from him. I just received my copy last week and have been studying it ever since. He truly has made traditional interiors sexy again don’t you think?

TWO- OVER 50 MAKEUP TIPS

I know so many of you enjoyed Sandra Sallin’s youtube video and London Times article last week.  I found this article in Vogue Seven Makeup Tips for Women over 50 written by an ad Industry expert who is also over 70, that I thought you might enjoy.

THREE-ALYSON WALSH

Do you read Alyson Walsh That’s Not My Age? I read this article from So Susie Wright about the color that makes everything look expensive.  I have often thought about this but not actually read about it in print. Then I opened this email from Alyson Walsh from That’s Not My Age. This look literally stopped me in my tracks.  Doesn’t she look beautiful?

I  think white jeans can be tricky for women our age.  If you have fat legs like Moi skinny white jeans tend to give you that sausage look.  I have a pair of white boy jeans that I like but they are really looking ragged. I am going to have to go into a store and try some on! I can’t get into expensive jeans.  I have found Madewell and J Crew often work for me. Have you found any that you would like to share with us?  I am going to check these out and will give you an update.

FOUR-STUDIO MCGEE LAUNCH AT TARGET

CHAIRS

Today is the day you can purchase the new Studio McGee for Fall at Target items.  I think SM did it again.  Left to right.  I would not purchase a chair at Target that you would be sitting on all the time but if you are looking for a chair for either side of a console, in your bedroom, or someone young starting out either of the chairs below would be great.

LIGHTING

I love the wicker pendant, and the brass pendant (which also comes in black).  I used something similar in my Morgan Tasting Room Project. I would use the wicker lamp in my own home.  I probably would upgrade the shade, but it has a great look.

PILLOWS, RUG, TABLE & ACCESSORIES

I am not sure if the jute stackable tables are new if not I don’t know how I missed them.  These would be a great option in between two chairs for drinks etc. Love the three pillows I selected.  They have a great look for less.  Think a kid’s new apartment or a young family. Love the rug for a bathroom, entry, or?  The cozy throw would be great anywhere and I love the pencil sketch and the bowl.  If you read my last post on styling consoles either of these items would work great. You can check out the entire collection here and I have linked my favorites below the graphic.

FIVE-JOHNNY CASH ON NETFLIX & FAJITAS

I have to admit I never appreciated Johnny Cash’s music but his story always fascinated me.  I stumbled on this one night while wide awake. You can read about it here. I am really enjoying the biographies on Netflix.  Have you seen any that you can recommend?

Last weekend at the lake we grilled fajitas.  We tried to prepare things that Summer would like and could be prepared on the grill.  We always love Fajitas.  You can find my recipe in this post Simple Summer Barbeque at the Lake

Cindy Hattersley's favorite Fajitas

I sometimes lose count when I am collecting ideas for my Sunday Fab Five (I cheated) you got six for the price of five.  I hope you have a great Sunday and don’t forget to check out Mary Ann, and Annie’s five favorites.  They always have great stuff!

Jeans – Levi’s all day long! Classic and sturdy, especially if I can find 100% cotton which I prefer.
Also love all the camel, especially the darker caramel shades. Great post!

    Hi Sarah

You know it is funny at my age I can totally appreciate that kitchen garden, but I also know how much work it is to maintain. We are in the midst of downsizing so a tiny town garden looks really appealing to me right now. However I went gaga when I saw that!!

  5. Karen B. says

Great post. I bought a wonderful spring/summer throw from Target Studio McGee and was pleased with the quality and design. It’s fun to find bargains by great designers. I always enjoy the make-up features and that BBQ looked delicious.

You’re wearing white jeans (it appears) in the picture at the top of your blog and you look great! You most certainly do not have fat legs. We are hard on ourselves, though, aren’t we? I know I am as well. I’m wondering if the problem with white jeans is because white advances rather than recedes and so flaws can be more evident. Just a thought. Again, you look great – white jeans or no white jeans.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Jeanine
You are right I am wearing a pair of cropped topshop white jeans that I do love (even though the covid pounds make them not that flattering at the moment) I have another pair of old gap that I like but both are 3 or 4 years old. You are right white advances and accentuates all of our errors!!

  7. Linda Ebright says

I also have an issue with wearing white jeans. Even though friends label me “slim” I never wear white jeans. I’m always reluctant/not confident about putting white on the bottom half of me! I don’t want them baggy, but not skin tight. I do admire white jeans on other, though. Maybe it’s just not my thing…but maybe I haven’t found the right pair.

  8. Sandra Sallin - Apart from My Art says

Oh Cindy, thank you so much for mentioning my YouTube Video and article. I really appreciate your support. I swooned at The Mark Sikes Home. That garden!! I only wish I had a guest room that looked like that. I don’t think the camel color works with my grey hair. It works on Alison’s but I don’t think on me. I always love your recipes. Oh, there were some new products that I’ll have to try in your Over 50 makeup article. I’m very into cream blush and bronzer these over 70 days. Always love these posts. I’ll now go to Anna and Mary Ann.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

Okay, you know I am not a big youtube fan but now I am just because of you. I watched you again today for your favorite concealer. I believe every word you say because you look amazing!!

  9. Annie Diamond says

Cindy! I always love your favorites and I always learn a thing or two! I loved Alison Walsh’s look wearing white jeans! Love her style! And the post about the color camel…I would agree that it can make things look more expensive. Your grilled fajitas look gorgeous.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Annie
Isn’t it funny I never really thought about the camel until Susie said it, but it is true isn’t it? When I saw that pic of Alyson I just thought wow….

  10. M c says

I love Everlane jeans. Being short, I often order the ankle length for a perfect full length jean. Give them a try!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Mc
I have been tempted to try Everlane. I am only 5’4 but am long waisted with short legs so I understand the short issue!

  11. Susan says

Same sausage issue here with the white jeans… I found a pair at Madewell last year that worked pretty well but would love more suggestions…hope you’ll report back with your findings! Always look forward to reading your blog!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Susan
So glad to hear it isn’t just my problem…Alyson looks fabulous in those white jeans. I just keep thinking I need to just find the right pair.

  12. Patti says

Oh I hear ya about white jeans making my legs look like sausages! Why is that when I look just fine in blue jeans? Seems that if you don’t have legs like a giraffe then you look like your sausage thighs are gonna burst out of their casings! I love white jeans so much but just haven’t found a flattering pair! Some designer needs to get on it already! Anyone recommend a label? I’m 64 but would still love to wear them!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Patti
Yes!! I have a pair of old gap girlfriend or boyfriend or whatever they are that I can actually wear but the others not good!! Hoping our readers will help us out!!

  13. Laurie Cordeniz says

Cindy – I always get excited when I see your blog pop up in my email. As always you did not disappoint! Love the fashion tips and can always use a good over 50 makeup article. This Sunday Fab Five series is a favorite. Thank You!!!!!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Laurie
Thank you so much. We began this series as an idea for a quick post on Sunday but all three of us put so much effort into our posts that we don’t know how to do simple or easy! We so appreciate it when we hear that you enjoy them

  14. Mary Ann Pickett says

Wow…you found so many more great Studio McGee things than I saw in my sister’s store. I thought of you with the wicker lamp. I am definitely ordering the new Sikes book. Have fun in Carmel.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

I think you would like his second book. He is just so darn talented. I have been lazy about ordering design books and I enjoy them so much. Stuio McGee did it again didn’t they?
