Two Great Reads, a Leopard Skirt You Will Love, and More

Happy Sunday. Let’s dive right into Two Great Reads, a Leopard Skirt You Will Love, and More. As usual I am joining my pals Annie and Mary Ann for our Sunday Favorites.

JAMES FARMER ON INSTAGRAM AND HIS NEW BOOK

I ordered James Farmer’s new book Celebrating Home last week and can’t wait to get it. I own Arriving Home and I think this one is going to be even better. Are you following James Farmer on Instagram?  If you love beautiful gardens, interiors, entertaining, and a big dose of Southern Charm you should.

AARP FIVE GOOD HABITS THAT MIGHT BE AGING YOU

A few of these habits might surprise you

OUR FATHER ON NETFLIX

Netflix has some great documentaries and this one does not disappoint.  The shocking expose of a once respected Indianapolis Fertility doctor.

OUTFIT OF THE WEEK

I am more of a natural fabric person so I have struggled with these “slip skirts” that are so popular now. I am officially embracing this one from Reformation. I am also linking a less expensive one from Nordstrom Rack. This moto jacket from Ralph Lauren is very similar to the one I have had for at least 10 years. Many of the moto jackets I have seen this year are cropped. I don’t think those work for “most” of us over 60. FYI Banana Republic Factory has a price friendly version in faux suede.I have also linked that one. The t-neck is from Athleta, earrings from J Crew, a hat from Brixton, and boots from Everlane. I think those of us who have bunions might be able to wear these as they are knit.

AGELESS STYLE NEWS

I have good news and bad news about our monthly Ageless Style Series. My long time partner Elizabeth aka The Vintage Contessa is retiring from Ageless Style. The good news is Brenda from 1010 Park Place will succeed her. Elizabeth’s shoes will be tough ones to fill, but I feel confident you will enjoy Brenda’s contribution. I know many of you read Brenda’s blog. She is a wonderful writer. We will share our first series together next Wednesday. After this week our interviews will be on the last Thursday of the month as usual. I made a scheduling error this month.

JAN WENNER BOOK PREVIEW IN AARP

You know Jann Wenner has a lot to share. I think this one will be really interesting. You might enjoy this book preview in AARP.

jann-wenner ROLLING STONE MEMOIR

Jann Wenner’s book comes out in September.  You can pre-order Like a Rolling Stone now on Amazon here.  This sounds like it will be a great read.

Well that’s it from my desk this week. If you missed any of my Sunday faves, you can find them all here. Thank you for reading Two Great Reads, a Leopard Skirt You Will Love, and More. I hope you are enjoying the last days of summer. Now pop over and visit Annie and Mary Ann for their Sunday favorites.

Oh wow, Cindy … that AARP article is good. And has me rethinking a few things. Love James new book … a feast for the eyes. I’m ordering the Jann Wenner book right now, thanks for the heads up. As always I love your outfit of the week. That skirt … adore it. I feel fall in the air and I’m ready to dress accordingly. Sad to hear the Contessa is retiring from Ageless Style. I’ve enjoyed her contributions and adored being one of her ‘victims.’ Brenda will do a phenomenal job picking up the baton. xo

      Hi Juliet

You are too young to be reading AARP but they have so many good articles for those of us over 65!

  2. Nan of TN says

James is adorable! When I first discovered his books in a local bookstore while living in gorgeous Madison, Georgia, I exclaimed to the owner as I paid for the stack, “This man gets my style!” Quintessential southern comfort beauty in every one of his creations.

  3. Karen B. says

I really love James Farmer’s style and enjoy his Instagram page. I look forward to seeing his new book. The outfit is great. I’m eagerly awaiting jacket weather here in SoCal. I usually tire of summer around now and I know we’re still in for some hot days through most of September. Autumn will arrive, right? 🙂

      Hi Karen

I knew James Farmer had your vote!! We are going to have some hot ones in the coming week. I don’t think we will be seeing jacket weather for a while here. Perhaps in the evening!

  4. Heidi says

    Hi Cindy
    Love your book recommendations!
I have that exact same outfit in my closet! I love my leopard skirt! It’s cooling down a bit here but will be awhile before my turtleneck sweater comes out of the closet! Can’t wait to recreate this entire look though. I need some cute new booties, these look fun. I don’t know if I’ll ever do a heel again but those aren’t too high.
Sorry Elizabeth is not going to be doing Ageless Style anymore, her posts were fun and interesting. I know Brenda’s will be great, too!
    Xo Heidi

Great post! I have a version of your outfit (inspired by you, of course!). Good reminder on bad habits. Best wishes to the Contessa. Looking forward to Brenda’s addition.

        Hi Barb

We will miss Eliz here. Hopefully she pops in once in awhile! I thing you will enjoy Brenda’s spin, She is a wonderful writer

  5. Martha Foss says

I have the James Farmer book in my cart as well, but I didn’t order it because we are leaving for Europe this week and I didn’t want it sitting at my door for a month!! It makes me wish I could have it to read on the plane however I would never lug a big decorating book on a flight unless I had a Sherpa to carry all my stuff!! It doesn’t matter how much I pair down I always seem to have more than I planned on.

The skirt is so cute and I know it’ll look great on you. I’ll need to work on my waist line when I return from Europe, but the next few weeks is definitely not a time to plan to cut back- we are headed to the Mediterranean and the food is so fantastic! As usual I love your blog and I will miss Elizabeth on the ageless style but I’m glad you are continuing it!
    Best,
    Martha

    Cindy,
The James Farmer book is in my cart. I love his style, and yours. I will be ordering the skirt for a classic addition to my fall/winter wardrobe. Thank you! Pat

  7. Annie Diamond says

Cindy! I always love your finds and your style is spot on! I did not even realize that style skirt was called a “slip skirt”–It makes sense! It’s great for travel since it doesn’t take up any space. I love the whole mix! And that book…I want it!

So glad that Ageless Style is returning! I will miss the Contessa’s inimitable touch, but I know the series will continue to be great fun.

  9. Mary from Life at Bella Terra says

Cindy, I already received my James Farmer book and I am literally reading it cover to cover. About mid way through right now…it is glorious!

  10. Cindi says

Love the outfit! I bought my MaxStudio Pleated Midi Skirt at Nordstrom Rack. I wish I could post the picture. It was $29.00. Need to size up as the waist band is snug.

  11. Karen H. says

Thanks Cindy for continuing Ageless Style. It’s one of my favorite series. Thanks to Contessa for her past contributions, and welcome Brenda!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Karen

I just couldn’t let Ageless Style go. We started it back in 2017. I had to twist Elizabeth’s arm because she isn’t big on collaborations, but she persevered and enjoyed it very much I think. As you know Eliz has had a rough time health-wise and doesn’t need the added stress right now.

  12. Mary Ann Pickett says

I have that James Farmer book in my cart. I’m going to use your link to pull the trigger. The leopard skirt reminds me of that black and rust polka dot midi skirt that I need to pull out again this fall. You are so inspiring.
