Five Simple Ways to add Color to your Outfit

Today I am joining Jennifer (from a Well Styled Life) and our friend Sandra (Apart from My Art) for our monthly fashion edit. I don’t know about you but I am ready to say goodbye to COVID and the gloomy shades of winter, and to say hello to Spring with color! This year more than ever I am craving the freshness of spring and embracing color in my home and my wardrobe. There is something about color that can make one feel alive, carefree, and confident. Don’t be afraid to experiment a little. Instead of going crazy and buying a rainbow-hued wardrobe, find ways to gradually introduce color so that you can feel confident in your own skin. Let’s take a look at my Five Simple Ways to Add Color to your Outfit.

ROCK A BOLD SHOE OR BAG

You know my idea of a bold shoe is the Artemis mule or another new fav the Rothy loafer. My niece Lisa alerted me to these.  I was reluctant to purchase due to my bunion.  Lisa’s advised they are pretty flexible.  Boy wash she right!  I am wearing the Mer Sea Catalina Sweater.  I could not get a great pic of this sweater.  I think you will love it.  It comes in multiple colors and would be fabulous for travel. I am going to order at least one more color.

WEAR COLOR WITH COLOR

When researching this post I realized that almost every single colorful piece in my wardrobe was either red or fuschia. My friend and color consultant Sharon Parsons told me years ago to wear more purple.  I finally get it now that I have gray hair. I am working on adding more lavendar tones into my wardrobe.

I have to admit I am not really up on the royals, what caught my eye in Oprah’s interview with Harry and Meghan was her outfit. I LOVE  Oprah’s style she always looks current without trying too hard.

I love this one. Don’t be afriad to be bold  just make sure the intensity is the same.  This is an old example from a post past.

GIVE THE EYE SOMEWHERE TO REST

Try not to wear pattern on pattern and too many colors at once.

Here I am wearing this fun AM Designs shirt that I purchased locally at Emily Evita.  If you are local stop in she is very creative and is trying to survive in a covid world.  If not I will link below. The necklace is by Paula Carvalho

    Hi Cindy,
I was wondering which size you purchased in the Mer Sea Catalina sweater? I want to buy it but can’t decide on the smaller or the original l/xl. I generally wear a small. You always look fabulous!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Lori

I emailed you but for the sake of others I did buy the smaller one. They are plenty ample! I love that sweater. I might have to order another in a neutral!

  2. Donna Darling says

    Hi Cindy,
I love every single outfit you wear! You are my fashion icon! Just a few questions:
    1. Does the great white shirt that you got from Artful Home need to be ironed?
    2. Where did you find the beautiful iron bed for your master bedroom?
    3. Are the Bed Stu boots really comfy?
    4. And finally, that really fabulous wicker looking chest in your entryway by the stairs- what is it called and where did you get it?
Thanks so much for all you for women our age…..you give me confidence to try new and sometimes edgier things like combat boots. Love ’em!
    Donna

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Donna
The white shirt does need to be ironed but it is very crisp and easy to iron. The iron bed in our bedroom was made in Mexico when we built the house. We used to have a great ironware connection there but they are no longer in business. I would try https://rstyle.me/+BTwBtOA6b3Bcjw2R7dDV_A on Etsy. Readers have had them fabricate things (ie my outdoor tables). The chest in the entryway is a french traveling trunk. Watch ebay or vintage markets. I looked forever to find one but then found a great one for my son not long ago. They were used to ship peoples belongings. Oh the bed stu boots. Yes they are super comfortable. They don’t have a lot of support but I add insoles and they are perfect, plenty of room in the toe bed!

    Hi Cindy,
I have to agree with your friend that purples and lavender look great on you. I’m not grey yet, but find as I get older that I’m drawn more to bold colors. From in my home, to my clothes and my garden. Six years ago, when my son got married, I chose a very structured, off the shoulder gown of dupioni silk in tangerine with a fuchsia sash. The woman who owned the salon had originally tried to talk me out of ordering those colors. I held my ground, and when the gown, with matching shawl, came in she left me a voicemail stating that it was the most stunning gown she had ever seen. Always love reading your blog.

  4. Wren says

What a great array of colors you show you can wear. I see every color in the rainbow but green and I’ll bet you can wear an army/olive green as long as it’s more gray than yellow. I also notice you are wearing no brown, beige, or camel on your top half. My fav on you is the lavender top so I think the color specialist was spot on. I keep waiting for PERIWINKLE to make a return!
Could you tell me what size I would take in the white tunic shirt from Chico’s? I’ve never shopped there but know they size their clothes in a different way. I would wear a regular 4.
Loved this post……the joy of color, thoughts turning to spring and getting past this pandemic. Thanks, as always~

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Wren

You will need a zero. I don’t shop there either but I do like those no-iron shirts. Jennifer was commenting that she loves periwinkle and has a hard time finding it as well.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

P.S I really never looked good in brown. My hair was nearly black. I loved mustard and chartresy green. I still wear it but not sure it looks very good on me!

  5. Sarah London style says

Oooh.. colour! Love it! And just in time for Spring 🌼 this post makes me so happy 😀 and that is exactly what wearing the right colours does for you. Thank you Cindy 🙏🏻

  6. Cindy says

Love your colorful examples, in fact I just bought a Kantha scarf.I’ve always wanted one. Can you please tell me where you bought the leggings from your photo in SF with the white tunic blouse?

  7. Pat R Dickerson says

Cindy, you are always striking in your looks with any of the colors. Love the Navajo look.
The tote looks brown both on you and at Neiman. It states the color as gray, so it may be a dark warm gray?
    Would you clarify that please?.
    Thank you. Pat

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Pat
My tote is ancient, probably 15 years old. I tried to find something close to it. You are right mine is brown. I will link up a couple more that are similar if I can find them.

  8. Susan says

I also have grey hair and have recently purchased a little lavender. I was interested to know about the color of the skirt you are wearing with the linen top… the link seemed to indicate red…love the look of the pic but wasn’t sure that red was correct, as it appears more burgundy!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Susan

My skirt is burgundy. I would direct message CP shdes on instagram. They will tell you if they have any available anywhere. I purchased mine on Ebay last year. You can also watch for one there. Free People carries the one in gold that I have. I like it alot too.

  9. Sandra Sallin says

Geeze Cindy. We so think alike. I laughed at your choices because they were mine also!!! I always so enjoy working with you. You’re my leader. Thanks for the invite. This was fun. You’re right. One of my ways of adding color to my wardrobe is with my bracelets!!! You hair is looking fabulous I just bought the purple shampoo you featured on your blog. I always resect your recommendations!!!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Sandra

Great minds think alike! I am no leader! You are the rockstar! I am crazy about those bracelets. They are just you. Always fun to collaborate with you!

  10. LA CONTESSA says

I thought OPRAHS HAIR was STUNNING AS WELL AS THE COLOR CHOICES OF THE CLOTHING!HER LIPSTICK WAS GOOD TOO!
    MUST STUDY THAT!
I have to say I ADORE COLOR and the MORE THE BETTER it just makes me HAPPY…………I’m tired of the BLACK AND GRAY GARB.What people do not realize is wearing color will make you happy from the inside out!
I recall someone telling my MOTHER to wear LAVENDER or LILAC with her white hair.I think its very becoming!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Eliz

I loved Oprah’s outfit probably because I have an incarnation of the same thing. I agree about her hair so beautiful. I love her in more casual looks like this!

  11. Annie Diamond says

Cindy! I adore your style! When you wear all black with your gorgeous gray hair or add in color like in this post! Your sense of style is flawless…no one does it better! I’ve learned a lot from you! Whenever I am looking at something to buy….I think, would Cindy wear this? And how would she wear it?
    xoxo

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Darlene

I am 5’4 not very tall! I am very long-waisted which I think makes me appear taller in pictures for some reason. Or if I am standing next to Mary Ann!!

  12. Linda H says

    Hi Cindy,
In the Catalina sweater did you purchase the S/M or L/XL? Also, for reference, how tall are you please? Always enjoy your blog!

  13. Barb says

You’re 100% authentic and your style is as stunning as any blogger out there, even tho you don’t consider yourself a fashion blogger. I have hair envy and can’t imagine a color that wouldn’t look amazing with your gorgeous silver hair. Good luck with the sale of the house and finding a new nest to settle in.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Barb

Thank you so much for your sweet words. I think lavender is really good with gray hair, but it is harder to find!!

  14. Natasha says

I was shocked by your comment about Oprah Winfrey’s style when you yourself are the epitome of chic.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi

Oh my I am flattered that you think I am the epitome of chic. I thought Oprah looked great in the long skirt and the blush sweater with the riding boots. Maybe because it is something I might wear!!
