Refresh your Family Room with new Pillows

Happy Thursday. You may have heard our home is in escrow, along with our lake house, so we are in clean-out mode. When Mary Ann, Annie, and I  got the big idea to do a Spring tour it sounded like a great idea.  I ordered new pillows for our family room and TV room and some new lampshades.  I was going to replace our counter stools with these great-looking ones from World Market. Fast forward Mary Ann’s mother fell and passed away yesterday sadly, and our house is in escrow. So let’s take a look at how to refresh your family room with new pillows, fresh flowers and shopping my home.

Spring Family Room Tour Cindy Hattersley

REFRESH YOUR FAMILY ROOM WITH NEW PILLOWS

Here was my original mood board for the family room.

MOOD BOARD FAMILY ROOM CINDY HATTERSLEY DESIGN

Forgive me I have no flowers in my yard right now.  I did find some blooming camellias and I picked up some pussy willows from TJ’s.over a month ago.  I just keep refreshing the water and they hang on.  The fireplace mantle I changed up a bit (not much to be honest).  On the coffee table, I filled a vintage coiled rye basket with the pussy willows and camellias.  I added a vintage Walnut Ridge bunny ( I am not very good at Easter decor), a vintage shell, and my favorite votivo red currant candle and placed it all on a vintage breadboard.

VINTAGE AND MODERN ACCESSORIES ON THE MANTLE

I didn’t change this up much.  I brought back the modern art (a print out from Etsy) and kept the old house vent. Green always brings the outdoors in.

Here was my family room before. I loved the look but was ready for a change.

This view is from the kitchen. The new pillow covers make me happy.  I was ready for a pop of color. Aren’t we all?

Left to right (I will link below in shop the post) the first two pillows are from Etsy.  The middle pillow from Dear Keaton. I couldn’t make up my mind about styling so I added the french bride’s box I found at Round Top a few years ago.

PILLOWS FROM ETSY, OKA AND DEAR KEATON

The pillow from the far left is from OKA you may have enjoyed the post I wrote about them here. They have such great stuff.

I filled my old Romanian pottery bowl with old coral specimens for Spring.  I hate these lampshades but they will have to do for now.  The lamps are made from old balusters.  They will look a lot better once the new lampshades from Ballard Designs come. OKA has some great shades as well here.I ordered these which I will share in another post.  These pleated shades from Ballard and OKA are the most reasonable I have found anywhere including Etsy.

VINTAGE BOWL FILLED WITH VINTAGE CORAL AND SHELL SPECIMENS

I love the crusty textural feel of the old coral specimens. The only piece that is new is the crusty red one.  I found it on Ebay and linked similar at the bottom of the post.

LAMPS MADE FROM OLD BALUSTERS

Look who kept photobombing.  Furrie (we gave her name a unique spelling because well her name is not very distinctive) is one of our feral cats that will be moving to town (should be interesting). Both of them are 12 years old and going strong. The picture of Beau in the distance is by my friend Pat whom I have featured many times before here. Love her work! Note ugly lampshades. They will be here in a couple of weeks. The dining room is in the distance with another painting by Pat.

GET MY SPRING FAMILY ROOM LOOK

That’s how I refreshed my family room with new pillows, flowers from my garden, and shopping my home. You don’t need to change everything out for a quick refresh.  I will try and do a full tour of our home for the archives before the move. If we move to the rental I will now have two sets of new pillow covers (fun).  Be sure and pop over and visit Mary Ann and Annie.  They are sharing their Spring Dining Rooms.

Your home is so lovely, this room is so ready for spring! I can only imagine what you and your husband are going through right now, deciding what to keep, sell, donate, etc. I am looking forward to continue following you on your new adventure. And please pass on to your dear friend MaryAnn how sorry we are to hear of her mom’s passing. Reading everyone’s comments it is clear you both have a “family” of dear followers who all are sending love and prayers her way.

Perfect timing for this blog! We’ve enjoyed several over 60 degree days with sunshine (what a treat!) so I have been pulling out the spring and a couple shamrocks too. Love the red pillows – and your use of the coral. I’m always inspired by your ideas! Sorry about your little Furrie.

    Hi Cindy,
I think you do Easter decorations perfectly. I am a huge fan of Votivo Red Currant. It’s one of my all-time favorite fragrances.
I hope your escrow goes well, what a relief, and how much fun to be beginning a new chapter of life.
    xo,
    Karen

    • Cindy Hattersley says

I agree Karen I have tried a lot of candles and it is still a big favorite. I am looking to you for advice on downsizing!

I love every aspect of this room! You showed a new way of using camellias which I never thought of. I’ve floated them in a bowl of shallow water for display but never thought of them as a cutting flower. I have many in my yard that are just falling to the ground but I should rescue some to bring in.
That you can still do a blog in the middle of your 2 sales is amazing. I don’t know how you are doing it and I’m sure you will be forgiven if there comes a time when you can’t do it all.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Wren

I tend to igonore the camillias as well. I only picked them because I literally had nothing else. Sometimes serendipity is best. Blogging is my job these days, and I enjoy the interacion with all of you ladies so much. I learn from you everyday. That’s what makes this fun!

Beautiful room thank you for the post Cindy. I love red and labradors two of my favorite things in the world! Please can you tell me where you bought your green pillows from? Gorgeous colors. Thank you. And my thoughts are with Mary Ann and the sad loss of her mother please send her my hugs and support .

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Francesca

They came from Etsy. Just google silk ikat on Etsy. The store I bought them from does not have them now but many will.

  6. Heidi says

    Hi Cindy,
I was sorry to hear of Mary Ann’s mom’s passing. I’m sure she’s feeling very sad and overwhelmed right now.
You must be going crazy with all the packing and planning ahead of you, but you still have time to make everything look pretty! I admire that, you have your priorities in order ! ; )
I’m getting ready to change out the pillow covers here, too. But with the rain I’m not feeling inspired. I was going to go with my yellow and gold and greens, but now that I see the colors you used, I’m feeling like I might want to change up my plan a bit! I love the warmth of the all those red/coral tones. That would mean a shopping trip for me, though, and I’d need to find room to store more pillow covers. Such a problem, I know! Also, dealing with ants right now which are driving me crazy!
Take care, one thing at a time, good luck with your escrows!
    XO Heidi

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Heidi
We are afraid to pack for fear it won’t go through. Right now we are just pitching! That is the worst part after being here for over 30+years!!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Heidi

Oh my gosh we get ants every once in a while. They are so hard to get rid of without using bad stuff. I am not going crazy yet, but I am sure I will be once I know this one is for sure. The lake house we sold totally furnished, so it will be fairly simple.

  7. Nicole Hammond says

It is all so beautiful! Could you please tell me were you found the stool on your mood board?

    Thank you!

  8. home before dark says

Love the red, of course. Red has never left my house! One of my additions to my now much smaller living room (half was annexed for the new kitchen!) was a red paisley throw from OKA. It went on a red chair my late MIL was inspired by my red love to upholster in a rather luminous shade of red…can you believe 46 years ago!! Still looks great and why change it if you love it.

Sorry to hear about Mary Ann’s mother. She was much loved and lovingly cared for.

    • Jenny says

I am so taken back to hear about Mary Ann’s mother. What a beautiful lady she was inside and out. I cannot image leaving your beautiful oasis. I am sure that beauty will follow you where ever you go.

      • Cindy Hattersley says

        Hi Jenny

Thank you so much. We will miss this place. I will give Mary Ann your regards.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Patricia

They still have that red paisley throw. It is wonderful. I just love their stuff. Exactly don’t change as long as you enjoy! Mary Ann’s mother had a very full life and was much loved by her family.

  9. Annie Diamond says

Cindy! I am loving the red and the patterns mixed with camellias and even pink coral! Everything you do is gorgeous. You make it sound so easy! Shop your house, clip some flowers and change out your pillows! Stunning!

Fresh looking refresh, paying attention to details. Lol I’ve been searching out the right size lampshades for a floor lamp and table lamp for awhile now…the struggle is real! Try the link to your Ballard shades again please. I downsized last January, bittersweet but mostly sweet and enjoying life. Large black plastic garbage bags in every room, out w the old. Even if I threw away some things that could have been donated it had to be done for simplicity and my sanity! know you’ve got this. RIP Maryanne’s mom, looked like another life well lived.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Carol

I redid the link to the Ballard shades so sorry. I also linked the OKA ones. They are in stock and already shipped if you can find one you like. I know once we get settled we will be able to travel, walk to dinner etc. It will be different. We will fix up the little house and move on to Paso if we can find something when the market isn’t so crazy!!
