FRENCH COUNTRY COTTAGE ON INSTAGRAM

We cannot grow lilacs here but I know you can pick them up at TJ’s.  Needless to say I have not been shopping just packing.  This photo from Courtney from French Country Cottage made me want to go out and buy a bushel. She takes the most gorgeous photos of florals.  You can follow her on Instagram here. You can follow her beautiful blog here.

THE ZOOKEEPERS WIFE ON NETFLIX

I Just finished watching the zookeeper’s wife on Netflix. The film tells the true story of how Jan and Antonia Zabrinski rescued hundreds of Polish Jews from the Germans by hiding them in their Warsaw zoo during WW II. I thought it was wonderful, but I had not read the book.  Would love to hear from those of you who have what you thought.  I know sometimes the movie versions can be disappointing.

GIFT GUIDE FOR MOM-AKA US

J Crew is back in a big way in my mind.  Okay, I am not a pattern person but I am in love with these pants.  The reviews are out the window, so if you like them grab them.  I have a feeling this will be one of those items that will sell out because they are so unique.  They would look fabulous with their Baird McNutt Irish linen shirt (a favorite of mine which now comes in a boy cut).  I am ordering both as a present to me. I rounded up a group of accessories to complement it.  I think everything should be kind of laid back and simple because the pants are so va va voom.  I love korkease sandals so comfortable.  I added my favorite Jo Malone fragrance and some cute PB rattan-covered glasses that I am personally coveting.  The icing on the cake is the fresh lilacs you can order from Flowerbox here  All other items are linked below. Just noticed the pants are on final sale so make sure you know your size!

It’s a good time to pick up that Pia Hat that you all loved so much, and so many great scarves and belts in the accessory section. This Frye bag is fabulous but so darn pricey.  $100 off might make it more palatable.  Is it me, or have shoes and bags gotten ridiculously expensive?

    Hi Cindy,
I love it all. I really enjoyed the Zoo Keeper’s Wife. It was so touching. Courtney’s blog is always inspiring. She’s planting a cutting garden and I know it will be wonderful. We had some much-needed rain today. Not nearly enough to prevent us from a drought, but every little bit helps.
    xo,
    Karen

      Hi Karen

We did not get any rain at all, just dreary, unfortunately. It certainly has been a cool Spring. Have a wonderful day!!

    I have two Lilac bushes!!!White and Lavender………….
Interesting YOU can not grow since you are two hours SOUTH from me……..maybe soil they are Finicky!!!TOOK years before they BLOOMED!

      Hi Elizabeth

We cannot grown lilacs here because it doesn’t get cold enough at night here. You get hotter in the summer and colder in the winter than we do here. My sister-in-law had one years ago that did not do well. I have never seen one around here. Our climate is very temperate. You can grow many things that I cannot here like dogwood etc.

The Zoo Keeper’s Wife is a peek into the quiet heroism of so many during the War and I loved the female-driven example of this. And- it is an adult movie… too few of those any more… such as “Out of Africa” or any Merchant-Ivory production… the world could always use a little more Robert Redford in, well, anything! “World on Fire”, a PBS Masterpiece series now repeating the first season from last year, will return for another season and I recommend it. Have you see the movie “EMMA”, starring Anya Taylor-Joy of “The Queen’s Gambit”?

Going to check out those lavender floral pants now! You reminded me of the lavender bushes in my childhood yard and dodging the bees and wasps to snip those lovely fragrant stems…

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Nan

I so agree about the zookeeper’s wife. Ahhhh Merchant Ivory wouldn’t we love that right now! I am going to check out world on fire. I have not seen Emma either though I did watch Queen’s Gambit. Thank you so much for the recommendations will add to my list!!

Another fabulous post! Oh, those lilacs!! I can only imagine how wonderful her house must smell. And I totally agree with your JCrew assessment. I’ve bought more from them in the last year than ever before. Hope they keep up the good work!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi CK

J Crew had gotten so bad. I am so happy they are back on track, love them!!

  5. Eva Popovich says

The lavender blouse is SO calling my name. I like the botanical vibe of the J Crew pants too. And lilacs! I’m from the western suburbs of Chicago: lilac country!! The air in the springtime was just divine.
Thank you so much for the recommendation of the Zookeepers Wife. I have been wanting to read it but was always in the middle of some other book. Now I can watch it!Eva

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Eva

You know I am from the Midwest as well where the lilacs were so prevalent. I do miss them! You will love the zookeepers wife. I too never got around to reading it either. Such a wonderful movie! I love those J Crew linen shirts. I am so glad they are also making a looser version!

  6. Heidi says

    Hi Cindy,
It’s cold and grey here too, no rain yet but keeping my fingers crossed.
Love everything here, Lilacs especially! Have a few shrubs growing in my yard and on my deck, they are wonderful. Also made a few lilac paintings which were fun!
Think of how organized you will be when you get everything boxed and labeled! Eventually this chore will end!
Hope you have a nice Sunday,
    XO Heidi

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Heidi

Wow I am so bummed that you and Elizabeth can grow lilacs! It doesn’t get cold enough here. We are nearly finished packing. I bet your lilac paintings are wonderful!

  7. sue says

I love your blog!! Regarding The Zookreepers Wife, I tried to read the book and just could not get into it. But I absolutely loved the movie. Usually it is just the opposite for me with books and movies.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Sue

I had the same problem, and totally agree about the movie! Have a great day!

  8. Mary Ann Pickett says

What a lot of fun! I like the idea of treating yourself for Mother’s Day! 🙂 I gave Teresa the wicker glasses and love using them when I’m in San Diego. They are stackable which is great if you are short on space. Good luck with the packing. Think of the calories you are burning!!

  9. Jeanne Henriques says

Just went down the list and said yes, yes, yes to all Cindy! Haven’t seen The Zookeepers Wife but will watch it now. I sent this post to my daughter to let her know the years I spent collecting wild “palazzo pants” was well worth it. Right in style now…in the woods of New Hampshire. 😉 Great post as always!
