Meet Chic Bay Area Fashion Blogger and Teacher Dawn Lucy

Dawn we are absolutely delighted to be featuring you today for Ageless Style! Even though we haven’t had the chance to meet in person, I feel as though we already know you. I’ve long admired your effortlessly chic California style and the joyful, confident way you embrace both fashion and the aging journey. You are a jeans girl through and through. This is going to be fun, let’s meet chic bay area fashion blogger and teacher Dawn Lucy.

Meet Chic Bay Area Fashion Blogger and Teacher Dawn Lucy

You are a high school English teacher and a fashion blogger, based in San Jose, CA. Tell us how these two worlds collided and how one influences the other, and vice versa.

I think sharing outfits and style tips is kind of a form of teaching, right? And I love to write, so blogging is just a natural hobby for me.

Your motto is “you’re never too old for fun with fashion.” How do you keep fashion fun and what tips can you share for those wanting to take more bold risks with their own wardrobe?

My personal style keeps evolving as I age, and I think that’s fun. I love to try new trends, but I never feel like I have to. For example, I will be totally skipping the butter yellow trend, but I’m loving the wide-leg trend and the oversized trend. I think it’s all about doing what works for you and makes you happy! I also think it’s fun to follow along on Instagram and see what everyone is wearing. I get so much inspiration that way!

You have the most gorgeous, long, and thick gray hair. Tell us your go-to products for keeping your hair in such healthy condition.

Aww, thanks so much for the sweet compliment! I’m lucky to have good hair. On top of that, I think it’s what I DON’T do that has the most impact. I don’t use dye and I don’t use any heated tools on my hair at all. I wash it every other day and air dry it. Right now I’m using Nexxus shampoo and conditioner, but I often change products. I used to spend SO much time and money on my hair. Now the less I do, the more compliments I get! Who knew?!

You are all about age-positive and body-positive fun with personal style. What are your words of advice for aging gracefully while staying relevant?

It’s all about having fun and just feeling good being yourself, I think. I just don’t worry about wrinkles and extra pounds like I used to. Life is too short. I think people should dress to make themselves happy and comfortable. I have fun trying out trends, so I do, but I definitely think that’s a choice.

The Price is Right! A lifelong dream of yours – how was it being on this show? Was it all you imagined it would be?

Being on The Price is Right was such a kick! I watched it as a kid with my folks and so did my husband, so it’s just very nostalgic for us both. I still can’t believe I got called to “come on down” and I won a car! I did write a blog post about my experience and also what I think helped me get picked, in case anyone is interested.

Fashion Week! Tell us about who you have met, and your most favorite memories of attending this event over the years.

Oh, attending New York Fashion Week was such a dream come true for me. Just to be there and part of the energy of the event is wild! I got to meet some famous people, like Paris Hilton and Paulina Porizkova, but even more fun was meeting style bloggers I had been following on social media for years.

You’ve been married for over 10 years – how do you make time for your marriage when life gets crazy?

We always make Saturday a fun day, which I love. So instead of a date night, we have a whole date day. We don’t plan ahead, and we just see where the day takes us!

Dawn Lucy and her husband

You love to travel – share with us some upcoming trips you have planned and what you are most excited for. You love to provide “what I packed” tips so we will have to be on the lookout for those.

My husband and I are thinking of retiring to the Pacific Northwest, so lately our vacations have been scouting trips. It’s very fun for us to explore new places and consider our happy retirement there. We are going to Washington state this summer to check out some of the island locations, as well as spend some time in Seattle. I will definitely be posting packing lists and tips.

For anyone visiting San Jose, CA – what are some hidden gems you can recommend in this area and the best day-trips if you are short on time and want to get the full experience of this part of the state?

Most people appreciate Valley Fair mall and Santana Row in San Jose, but I also think downtown has a lot to offer, like super cool cafes, and my neighborhood Willow Glen is also a really cute place to spend some time! As for day-trips, my favorites are San Francisco, Sausalito, Half Moon Bay, Santa Cruz, and Carmel.

What do you love most about living in California?

I am Bay Area born and raised and have never lived anywhere else. Because of that, I probably take a lot for granted. I definitely like the mix of cultures and backgrounds in the bay. I also like how many fun places are only a short drive away.

Name five fun facts about you that we might not know (outside of fashion and teaching).

I love to go to cute cafes and have a coffee drink in a real cup.

I have been clean and sober for 24 years.

I’m an introvert. I fool people because I’m a very friendly introvert, but I truly need a lot of alone time to recharge.

I started my blog when my mom was dying. It was my happy, fun place and that’s still what it is to me.

Cold, overcast days are my favorite.

What are your tips for balancing work life and family life and how has this changed as you have gotten older?

As I’ve gotten older, I definitely make more time for self-care. I write in a journal, meditate, and take naps. These used to be things I would do “if” I had time, but now I realize how important it is to make the time.

If you could give your younger self any words of advice, what would they be/share your words to live by:

I would tell myself to stop taking everything so seriously and instead just enjoy the moments, enjoy the ride …

  1. Cindy finally getting here and your lovely post on Dawn! So nice to see her featured. She has great style and a super attitude about life. She’s always fun. I met her in college when we both worked at the cosmetic counters at Macy’s while finishing our degrees at SJSU. She has been a friend ever since! This was fun. She does have the greatest hair and is very photogenic! I am super jealous. x

  2. The 2nd photo stopped me, I thought her hair is gorgeous. The link for the shampoo takes me to a clothes set. Lovely read.

  3. Hi Cindy,
Dawn is so fun and has a very well defined sense of personal style, I appreciate that about her!
I’m lucky to consider Dawn one of my friends, someone I met through Instagram and blogging! We get together occasionally, and have a third person in common, our dear friend Kim @northerncalstyle. Watch out when the three of us are in the same room!
It was great reading about her and what makes her tick.
    Thanks for the post Cindy!

    1. Hi Heidi

Dawn owns her own style, doesn’t she? I love that about her! I know the three of you are friends. I bet you have a lot of fun together!

  4. Thank You for a great read! Dawn is really going to enjoy her summer. Hoping on a ferry and exploring the San Juan Islands is my favorite trip. Friday Harbor is worth spending a few days exploring.
The Pacific Northwest is a part of our country that doesn’t get the attention it deserves. It would take a lifetime to see it all. Plus Canada is right next door.

    1. Hi Lynne

I hope Dawn will chime in here and see your wonderful suggestions!!

  5. Oh, how fun to see Dawn Lucy here! I’ve read her blog on and off for years, and just recently put her on my daily read list. She is both inspiring and relatable!
Her style sense seems truly ageless and timeless in today’s world. I like how her looks seem to be about real day to day activities. Not that I don’t dream about vacation capsule wardrobes, and dinner party hosting outfits!
My real life in retirement is more about exercise, gardening, hikes, and casual get togethers with family and friends.

    1. Hi Lisa

We all live a much more casual lifestyle now don’t we? Well at least most of us!!
