Seeing Red in the Garden, Wardrobe, Menu, & More
Are you a fan of the color red—in your garden, your home, or your wardrobe? I have to admit, I’m a bit fickle when it comes to red. It’s not a color I gravitate toward in my garden or my decor, but I do enjoy a bold red lipstick and the occasional red piece in my wardrobe. I recently experimented with red nails, though, and quickly realized they’re just not for me. Let’s chat about seeing red in the garden, wardrobe, menu, and more.

I find red to be difficult in my own garden. This article from Fine Gardening has many helpful tips if you are interested in incorporating red in yours.

BHG-Nine Common Garden Myths
Oh boy this article from BHG on common garden myths is interesting. I have been putting gravel at the bottom of my pots for years. Anyone else violating any of these common mythis?
Ten Things to Never Do While Charging your Devices
I found this article from Martha Stewart interesting. I am guilty of at least two!!
New York Times Chopped Cucumber & Tomato Salad

This refreshing summer salad from the New York Times is one of my favorites. I love the crisp combination of celery tops, cucumber, tomatoes, and peppers. It’s delicious even with store-bought cherry tomatoes—perfect if your garden ones aren’t quite ripe yet, but even better when they are!
New York Times Cucumber Tomato Salad
Ingredients
- 1 cup diced red onion
- 2 garlic cloves smashed to a paste with a little salt
- 3 tablespoons red wine vinegar
- ¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil
- 2 roasted peppers preferably orange or yellow, chopped
- 3 cups halved cherry tomatoes
- 3 cups chopped thin-skinned cucumber such as Persian, skin on, in ½-inch cubes
- ½ cup chopped celery hearts plus leaves
- Kosher salt and black pepper
- 3 tablespoons roughly chopped flat-leaf parsley
- 4 ounces feta or queso fresco crumbled (about 1 cup)
Instructions
- Step 1
- Put onion, garlic, vinegar and olive oil in a large mixing bowl. Let macerate for 10 minutes.
- Step 2
- Add roasted peppers, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers and celery. Season to taste with salt and pepper, and toss well. Let macerate for at least 20 minutes, tossing several times with the dressing. You can also prepare the ingredients in advance, and assemble the salad up to 1 hour before serving.
- Step 3
- To serve, toss once more and transfer to a deep platter or wide bowl. Sprinkle with parsley and feta.
Seeing Red-Outfits of the Week
I am a bit obsessed with the pretty red (with blue undertones) that is popular this year. Anyone else a fan of this red?

Frank and Eileen has added this red to their lineup and I am coveting these! I own the Rory dress in white and chambray, I own all of the other pieces in other colors but I am dying to add some of this red! I know most of us do not want to wear ONLY red and Frank and Eileen can be pricey. Would you add a piece or two? You can find all of the items in the red colorway here You can find the Quince Travel Bag here, and the crossbody here.

Here are some great red options from Gap and Gap factory, with great reviews. I ordered a few and will report back on the quality once I receive them. Something to always keep in mind…Banana Republic is at the high end of the chain and the rest of the group follows. You can often find the same quality down the chain…it just takes a little investigating and trial and error.

I ordered the linen-cotton midi skirt, the long-sleeve shirt, and the pants. I’d scoop up the T-shirt dress in a heartbeat if I were at my usual weight—but I’m working on that! Interestingly, both brands call their shade of red “Tomato Sauce,” so I’m assuming the pieces will coordinate nicely. You can find everything in the “tomato sauce” category here.

Thank you for reading Seeing Red in the Garden, Wardrobe, Menu, & More. How do you feel about red? Yah or nay? Let’s chat about it and then pop over and visit Annie and Mary Ann for their Sunday faves. Mary Ann has another wedding this weekend, and Annie is in France, so they should have lots of fun details! Have a great Sunday!

I love coral, coral everything, but not necessarily red. I have an opinion about the gravel. In my pots I have seen a tunnel develop and the water rushes right out but the poor plant is just dry. Pieces of my old kitchen sponges placed over the holes slow down the water. It seems to me, if the pot fills with water and then drains slowly, you have a completely watered pot. I also use a moisture meter which is considered bad form, but those things work so well for me. People think I have a green thumb, they don’t know better.
Hi Nancy
Interesting..sponges?How did you think of that? I have used the pot shards or gravel issue for years which apparently is not good!
Not mad on red in the garden but will happily have deep magentas and almost-blacks to lift the white garden along.
Red in fashion? Thanks to Courtney Blood from the Monday Project Co, yes, I now wear a red with warm undertones where possible. I had become so staid in my wardrobe and now thanks to Courtney and her mother, I’ve introduced red and the most beautiful buttery yellow. Which is also a colour I might introduce in the garden.
I have been obsessed with red ever since I inherited a light quilted jacket in a contemporary black, white, and red design from my mother. Her style was much more reserved than mine, but she had a couple of “zinger” pieces, and this was one of them! Now my red fashion collection contains a fab red shirt dress in linen, which I love wearing as a duster over other linen dresses and pants, à red summer dress, red flare pants from Zara, the red quilted jacket from Bernardo (which you featured), a red puffer vest, several red tops in different styles, and I am considering adding a red linen jeans jacket…as I mentioned, I am obsessed! I love pairing it with leopard (both the brown and the black and white color ways), as well as all kinds of colors. Red just makes me feel so good. I am traveling to Japan in the fall and I am planning to take black, white, and of course, red!
Not a fan of red clothes on me. It washes out my complexion the same way black does. I do have red roses in the front of our house and one in back. They are cheerful and are Knock out rose bushes so all they need is once a year trim and food and water. Our higher altitude, dry mountain air seems good for them here in Colorado. You do look good in red.
Ugh. I’ve been putting clay pot shards in bottom of my containers for years. (Insert eye roll and then stop doing that drainage thing!) Love a touch of red. Struggle is not to dress like a costumed participant in July 4th parade. Or a sailor! Also adore Gap when it’s good and hate all the returns when it’s not. Rather new reader… is there a link somewhere for the other two bloggers referenced at the end of today’s post? Love that I landed on this site!
Love red everywhere!!! Love to wear it, see it in the garden (red geraniums are my favorite), and love it in the house (pops of red add interest I think. We have a red leather sofa that I love!) To me red is a happy color!
The article on plants was so interesting!!! How can things change so much? No more coffee grounds in my plants or rocks for drainage in the bottom of my pots!! Who knew!
Thanks, Cindy!
Cindy! I absolutely adore your red outfits!! I have been seeing quite a bit of red linen and I don’t have anything yet, but after reading your post, I’m tempted! You look stunning in red! And I’m sure red nails suited you too!
The salad looks amazing!! So colorful!
Xo
No red for me in the garden. Too hot and humid here in New Orleans. My gardening taste leans towards cool colors and white. Dash of red in my wardrobe, but gets little wear for same reason except in the winter. I do love the color though!
You look so great in red and I love all these choices you gave us. Teresa had on red ankle pants with a red top Friday night and with her white hair and red lipstick, she got so many compliments. Red can get you noticed…why not?
Cindy,
I’m with you, I don’t want red flowers in my garden, but I love a touch of red in my closet. I’ve printed the salad recipe, it looks delicious, perfect for the warmer temperatures soon to be arriving.
Your wardrobe is always lovely.
Have a wonderful week.

ALWAYS enjoy your blogs IG posts…everything😁. Wanted to recommend a movie we rented on Amazon the other night, Audrey’s children. Very moving true story of a pediatric oncologist who found new treatments for pediatric cancer and established the first Ronald Mc Donald house in Philadelphia. Wonderful film.
