My Curated Top 12 Favorite Thoughtful Gifts to Give and Receive
#1 Skill Building Gifts
These are my favorite gifts to receive and give. By giving access to beautifully produced, expert-led online courses, you’re not just offering a subscription; you are gifting a new hobby, or advancement opportunity, Each new issue that arrives in their mailbox acts as a small reminder of your thoughtfulness.
Create Academy

I’ve am completely obsessed with Create Academy. Use the Code BF30 for the next 24 hours to receive 30% off. Instead of just buying another thing, you’re giving the gift of an opportunity to learn incredible skills from world-class experts, whether it’s mastering the art of French cooking, designing a beautiful garden , mastering interior design with the likes of Bunny Williams, Veere Grenny, or Rita Konig and more. The courses are beautifully produced, easy to follow, and offer a real sense of accomplishment. It’s a thoughtful, elevated present that keeps on giving long after the holidays are over, making it my ultimate recommendation for anyone who loves self-improvement or has a passion for learning something new. When I retire, this is what I am spending my money on!!
Master Class

While Creative Academy focuses on elegant, specialized skills, MasterClass (50% off today only)is the entire world of inspiration, and it’s truly one of my favorite things to recommend. It provides an all-access pass to the world’s most successful minds, whether you want to learn filmmaking , scientific thinking from Neil deGrasse Tyson, or maybe even cooking techniques from Gordon Ramsay. The production value is incredible, and they make complex topics feel accessible . It’s a great gift for any curious person on your list (yourself included!) because it hands them the keys to unlock their potential in nearly any creative or professional field imaginable. I am going to be looking to Master Class as well when I retire and have the time to absorb all of this goodness.

#2 Experiences
I feel like everyone, myself included, has enough stuff, and honestly, the joy of unwrapping a material item fades pretty fast. Why not give your friends and family something that will create a lasting memory. It could be tickets to a concert they have been wanting to attend, a cooking class, a spa day (these are overrated in my opinion but that is just me!) a massage (another item not on my list but my husband loves them), a curated day trip to a favorite garden, or design house, or lunch at a favorite spot.
We usually give our kids a night or two away or dinner at a restaurant that might be a splurge. They do the same for us! This year we are giving Summer golf lessons, a sport she can enjoy with her dad. I haven’t yet decided where we will send our kids (the adults).

#3 Personalized Gifts
A personalized gift is in a league of its own in my opinion. When you take the time to customize something—whether it’s engraving a special date, embroidering initials, or designing something based on an inside joke—it instantly elevates the present beyond a simple purchase. It tells the recipient that you didn’t just grab something generic; you invested thought, effort, and care specifically into them. It transforms an ordinary item into a deeply meaningful keepsake that only they could own, making the gift feel incredibly special and cherished.

Cottage by Design
Trish, from Cottage by Design, has done my monogramming for years. She has monogrammed everyting from my dining room chairs, pillows, hand towels to Christmas stockings. She is a small shop that does beautiful work. I highly recommend her.
Mark and Graham
Mark and Graham takes Italian leather totes, chic jewelry organizers, elegant barware and more to another level with their monogramming options. Giving a gift with someone’s initials instantly elevates the present from something nice to something personal.
Shutterfly
At Shutterfly you can take your favorite snapshots and transform an everyday object into a meaningful keepsake ( mugs, tumblers, puzzles & ornaments to name a few) that will be used and appreciated long after the holiday season ends
Etsy
I am a huge Etsy fan . Etsy is a treasure trove for personalized presents, featuring an immense variety of monogrammed items crafted by small sellers. Once a year I open up my favorites list so you can snag my coveted treasures before I do!!

#4 Something from your Travels
The best gifts are often those spontaneous treasures purchased while traveling because they carry the unique story, and memory of a place where you are thinking of your friend or family, making them more meaningful than anything bought locally.
#5 Luxe Gifts

Luxe gifts, like cashmere sweaters or scarves, are perfect for Christmas because they offer a feeling of indulgence that your friends might not purchase for themselves. You can find reasonable cashmere options from Quince here. My family loves the cashmere beanies, gloves, and socks for reasonable options. I love the fit and style of the Catalina cashmere sweater from Mersea. A really luxe gift would be the Lugano sweater (which I own and love, the parma travel pants, and the luxe cashmere wrap that I also own). Lovely outfit to wear Christmas morning while opening gifts!
Pajamas & Robes
If you are like me and you could use an instant upgrade to your pj game. (mine are awful). I have been gifted the lovely options from Lake from my daughter and son and they are amazing here. Quince’s cashmere robe is an affordable luxury here.

#6 Magazine Subscriptions
Gifting a magazine subscription is a great way to offer enjoyment throughout the year, long after the holidays are over. It’s a highly personal present, as it shows you paid attention to a friend’s specific interests, whether they love cooking, home décor, fashion, or whatever.
#7 Tell Your Own Story
Have you heard of story worth? StoryWorth makes for an incredibly touching and unforgettable gift because it captures and preserves a family’s history in their own words. Love this!
#8 Make Your Own
For a truly meaningful gift, sometimes the best present isn’t bought, but instead meticulously and lovingly created by you. It’s a heartfelt way to share your time, talent, and passion.

#9 Shop My Curated Shop
To be honest I have spent weeks creating my shop on ShopMy. You can find everything here from scarves to home decor. Every single item was personally selected by me. You can find my entire shop here. If you have any questions about how to navigate it let me know.
#10 Offer a Service
What could be more valuable to a friend than offering a week of dog walking, a few hours of babysitting, or a promise to tackle their gardening. It is a wonderful way to give a gracious, non-material gift of time and help.

#11 Meals or Baking
Give a friend or family a much-needed break from cooking. If you have been reading my blog long, you know that I am not a baker. I do make a mean english toffee if I decide to do it!

#12 Books
Giving the gift of a book is personal and thoughtful. You are offering something tailored to the recipient’s curiosity and heart. Think beyond the bestseller list: choose a niche cookbook, garden or design book for the cook garden or design enthusiast, an inspiring memoir, first edition or a beautifully bound classic for a collector. You can find my favorite design books here, and my gardening books here.

Now let’s pop over and visit Mary Ann and Annie for their favorites.

I used your link to http://www.magazines.com and ordered two gift print mag subscriptions to Rolling Stone. I have no evidence of my order…no invoice, tracking number, email confirmation, nothing. It seems unprofessional and maybe you shouldn’t use that link or website. i have no proof of my order.
Hi Maureen
I contacted them and they said to contact them via You can contact us by emailing us at help@magazines.com. Let me know if you have any further problems.
Thanks Annie!!
Loved this post. But when I go to print tags it says I do T have permission to see them. Help?
Hi Kim
Email me cynthiahattersley@gmail.com and I will email it to you!
Cindy! Your list is so thoughtful! I love the idea of giving experiences! In fact, our big gift to Kate and Patrick this year, was joining us in Paris… and let’s just say Madeline’s wedding in October is her big gift!!haha
Love your monogram source! I gave my gorgeous towels in our powder bath!! They are so beautiful!
Xx
Thanks Annie!!
Great ideas! I too have a family that has EVERYTHING so your suggestions hit just the right note for a couple of them.
Would love your recipe for English Toffee though…….
Even your gift ideas are as stylish as you, especially on the Shop My website. I had a bit of a Christmas Gift shopping spree in Florence (in September), especially at Santa Maria Novella Farmacia and the leather shops (bags and gloves), loaded up on beautiful silk foulards from Venice (also gifts) and delicate Christmas decorations from the Uffizi gallery. Usually my gift giving is pretty unimaginative, so this year is a bit of a step up. I wish I knew about the curated gift tags – such a fantastic idea, maybe next year.
Hi Susan
Can I be on your gift list? I would love to do that next year, Christmas shopping in Florence sounds fabulous! I love shopmy it allows we creators to be “creative”…Happy Holidays!! I do love your Australian clothing brands. You may have been the one that introduced me to Alemais?
Hi Cindy. I would love for you to come and wrap my Christmas gifts – yours look so creative and personal. I didn’t introduce you to Alemais, but am a fan of Alquema and Zimmerman has some beautiful clothes (surprised to see a Zimmerman shop in Florence). I hope you have a wonderful Christmas with your family and friends.
Thanks Cindy – great curated lists and very timely. Besides some great gift ideas I found the perfect brooch I was looking for and it was on sale!
Yippee love hearing that!!
I love receiving Amazon gift cards as I use them for Audible books. I give my BFF a set of tea. This year it is by Stash. She loves tea especially in the cold winter months. It is an excellent choice as well as a book I know she will love. She doesn’t celebrate the holidays so I give her gifts on my mid December birthday. It always feels like fun to do so. I love your gift tags! Does Shutterfly do those for you?
Hi Sydney
I make my gift tags on Canva. It is easy once you get the hang of it!
Hi Sydney
Thanks for sharing…another great idea!!
Cindy, what a lovely and timely post so thank you! So much work was obviously put into this. Since you have adult children and granchildren, do you have any gift suggestions for my adult son and daughter in law who have announced they are expecting? I’m a bit out of touch with young parents these days and am curious as to what others may have gifted in anticipation of a new little one. Also, can you share your recipe for the English toffee? It would be so fun to make something a bit different than the usual and I am not a baker! Thank you so much and have a great day!
Hi Karyn
The recipe is in one of the posts that I linked but here you go

Hi Cindy,
Thank you so much for taking the time to give us your thoughtful ideas.
Your question about Summer and which one. Gee wiz I l think they are both fabulous. The Champagne color is more practical to keep clean. I think my vote is the white one. They are adorable, I’m sure Summer will love them.
Hi Katherine
Thanks for weighing in. Summer is not exactly easy on her shoes…She is constantly turning cartwheels, and enjoying every sport imaginable!
You have the best ideas, Cindy!
Thanks pal! Loved your post!!
This post is a GIFT! Thank you for these lovely suggestions and ideas. I am inspired!
Hi Andrea
