How to Style the Quilted Look after 50

This trend started a couple of years ago, but I am loving it more than ever now. What used to be relegated to jackets and vests has gone mainstream. Let’s take a look at How to Style the Quilted Look after 50.

Clearly, I have been loving this trend for several years. I am anxious to hear what you think about it. Interstingly, I tried to find some street styles of “women our age” in the look. I came up with none, other than pictures of the queen and the royals wearing the typical versions that have been popular for many years.

I picked up this BB Dakota quilted coat at a local shop last year and get compliments every time I wear it I It is no longer available in the Caramel color but there is one on eBay here. It is available this year in a great olive green colorway with buttons instead of a zipper. Everlane has a near-exact replica in multiple colors here. The gigi pip wren hat (a favorite) is available here. The J Crew Cashmere turtleneck I have owned for years but you can find one on sale at Everlane here. The Artemis slippers can be found here.

The Everlane Version in a beautiful blue. I can’t wear most blues but this one has me tempted.

This was one of my very popular outfits of the week back in September. You can read the details here. Kim from Northern California Style recently featured it on her blog here as well.

I also loved this outfit of the week featuring this great Madewell Poncho. There are a few ponchos on eBay here.

I recently featured this beauty from H&M. You can find more about this outfit and many others in my post How to Nail High and Low Fashion. I have since heard that many of you purchased it and are loving it. There are several manufacturers making a similar one for much more. I wear it all the time.

In the same post I am wearing this great long vest from H&M that I am also loving on cold dashes to the grocery in the a.m. It would be great to throw on over leggings on your way to the gym as well.

This recent Sundance look is really fun. Love the cheerful mix of the gold and ikat.

CINDY HATTERSLEY'S OUTFIT OF THE WEEK

This beautiful Chan Lu coat I inherited from my sister when she passed away. It is made from a Kantha quilt and embellished. Kantha are quilts that are made in India from recycled saris.

Similar Kantha designs can be found on Etsy here. This jacket below was one of the most popular on CHD.

This kantha jacket also found on Etsy was also extremely popular on the blog.

This Kantha jacket is also from Etsy. The particular colorway is sold out but the same coat is available here in this colorway, and she has several other reversible jackets in her shop.

It can also be worn on the reverse side, so you have two jackets in one.

    Hi Cindy,
my comment is coming super late, but I just wanted to say hello and let you know that I love your collection of quilted and kantha jackets. You ALWAYS look chic and interesting without looking overdone, if you know what I mean.
I tried to find that beige one but the link to the post takes me to shoes. Oh well.
I loved my brown and black quilted jackets and wore them to death. I need to replace them with a brighter color.
    Your posts always inspire,
    XO Heidi

Cindy, you have the best fashion posts! And you always look beautiful in all of them.
I love quilted coats and have many, RL, Barbour, and other traditional styles(like MaryAnn). I think I may need to add one of these longer versions to my winter wardrobe.
Thank you for sharing! Have a wonderful weekend.

    Cindy,
I confess, I’ve been a huge fan of quilted jackets and vests. The Kantha coats look fun. I read one comment from the person that had a bad experience with one of the sellers. I’ll make sure I avoid that seller.
I like the comfort of quilted jackets and vests.
    Great finds.
    Thank you,
    Karen B.

      Hi Karen

I could not find that store. I need to find out which one it is. I hate supporting bad products. I LOVE the comfort of the quilted look as well. It is much colder here than it was in Monterey County but I am enjoying it.

I’m also late to my reading this week. This is a terrific post, and I’m looking at getting the Free People vest as it’s so different. I just want to say how much I like that you featuredd FEED It’s a great organization, and I love the really casual look — and the bags are durable. I like nice handbags but am currrently supporting organiations like FEED and museaums. I have a super smallerr tote bag frorm The Met, and it’s held up really well, washes well, and the colors stay vibrant. The Met has gorgeous scarves and jewlery too. I hope morer women supporrt these organizations.

      Hi Maeve

Love your name by the way!! I am going to order a couple of the FEED bags for gifts. Love their mission. What’s more important than feeding school children? I love museum stores too.The met does have great scarves I totally agree!

Hey Cindy – late to reading the blogs this week and I always save the best for last. I love the quilted look – I have two vests, a long coat from Mango and I just ordered another white one from Mango that is very similar to the one you are wearing from H&M. I also love that you inherited pretty things from your sis and the one you are wearing is beautiful! Special too. I wear lots of Whitten’s clothing. 💙

I love quilted jackets and have been searching for a thigh-length one.In adopting trends I think it’s important to be honest with yourself about which proportions are most flattering to your body. I have a very straight-up-and-down figure and look best in garments that give me the illusion of a waist – I don’t think any of the jackets in your post would be suitable for me. Also I dislike of shirttail hems on garments that are not shirts.

Cindy…This is a heads up…I ordered the Kantha jacket you featured in your blog back in October. It took over 3 weeks to arrive, and was a total disappointment! The jacket that was sent was not the one pictured in the Etsy website, the jacket was HUGE, the workmanship was awful…loose threads hanging from the jacket and parts of the material not sewn together! I immediately contacted the Etsy store owner and sent pictures…he does not take returns, but said he would refund my $80 plus dollars…but of course, that never happened!!! When I sent more emails asking when he would refund my money, he just said “soon”, and never did! So I contacted Paypal, related my story and again sent pictures, which was again, a total disappointment as they basically take no nresponsibility for a refund, and kept telling me to contact the store owner, which I had done numerous times. Then I contacted the Etsy site, and they took no responsibility and kept telling me to contact the nstore owner.
I have ordered several items from Etsy in the past, and have never had a problem with the items ordered or the sellers. But I will never order from Tyono in India again! And I would caution you and your readers about this. I am out $80…and I just hope there is karma in this world and that this seller in India some day regrets his treatment of me! The jacket he sent is now at Goodwill!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Beverly

Thank you so much for letting me know. Please if this ever happens again, let me know right away. I would hate for anyone else to have that same experience. Which jacket was that? One of those jackets were purchased by many. One of my readers even said the seller custom-made it to suit her and she was very happy. I cannot find the store. I will make sure to never recommend again. I certainly hope no one else had the same experience. I am so sorry about that.

Good morning Cindy. I love the quilted look, and you hit it out of the park with every outfit. I’m going to have to jump over to Madewell to check out that cape. Have a wonderful weekend!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Katie

That cape is no longer available except on ebay. Thank you so much for your kind comment though!

Hi, I love this post! What is the seller’s name on Etsy who made the beautiful tan printed reversible coat? I’d love to order some as gifts for my sisters this year (OK, and one for me, too). I’m always cold, so this coat will be very welcome come winter time. It must be like getting a hug from your late sister when you wear her coat. It looks beautiful on you.

  10. Jannie says

OH, how I love the Kantha jackets!! In Florida these will work! Thanks so very much for sharing this as I had not heard of them before and know other friends who will love them.
Plus you look fabulous as always, Cindy!!

I have had a Barbour quilted jacket for years and a Lauren one too. Love them. Great examples here. I just wear them a bit more tailored since I am short.
    Beautiful post.

  12. Marcie says

I have been wearing quilted coats since the 1960s. My first one was pink and my aunt called it a bed jacket. 🤣 As you can guess, it was not considered chic at the time, but I loved it! Thank you for another great post!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Marcie

I have been too! Your aunts comment is hilarious! I could imagine my aunt dodo saying the same!

  13. Susan Kinoshita says

When over 50 I think it is important to cover the “behind” when wearing leggings! I purchased the green quilted coat from Zella during the Nordstrom Anniversary sale and have worn it frequently to run errands and walk the dog. I live in Seattle and it is getting cold now so I just add a sweater or fleece underneath. The coat is long enough to keep upper legs warm.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Susan

Amen to that!! I love that Zella Coat! I have my eye on several of the items featured. Our mornings are quite cold here.

  14. Francesca Browder says

    Hello Cindy,
You have such terrific style I so look forward to your posts every week! Thank you for the joy and the suggestions!
I just bought Hobbs of London Neava puffed jacket and love the olive color and the quality cut and fabric, and I also love their other puffed coats. There are a few on my Christmas list! My daughter loves quilted coats too so I know they are a win with her for gifts. Its cold here in California in the mornings especially and I love the look especially with boots and suede/leatherleggings. Talking of leggings, I bought the suede Lysee ones you featured and they are perfect thanks for the discount Cindy you are a star.
    Happy weekend, take care,
    Francesca B xo

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Francesca

Thank you so much for your kind words. I am so happy you purchase the Lysee leggings. I just love mine and they are a fabulous company to work with.

I just brought out my kantha vest by Mieko Mintz last week and remembered again, just how much I love it. You have a stunning collection!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Jennifer

I just love those Mieko Mintz vests from Artful Home. I especially love that one of yours! I am obsessed with anything quilted!

  17. Barb says

I have four (and counting) light quilted jackets, and some are years old. I recently added a knee-length hooded vest from LL Bean that I’m loving! I’m apparently a trendsetter; who knew? Haha By the way, I’m petite and don’t feel dowdy in these jackets at all.

  18. Jean Marie says

Even though I really like how you have styled these pieces, I think the quilted look after 50 runs the risk of looking “dowdy,” especially if you are short/petite. So, just a wee bit of caution there.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Jean Marie

Thanks for weighing in. I know being a petite one always has to be careful that the outfit doesn’t overwhelm.
