The Best Comfortable Sneakers for Women Over 50

Today Jennifer and I are joining our friends Annie and Mary Ann for our Monthly Style Edit. We are talking about comfortable shoes that are fashion-forward and stylish. I know a tall order for sure. Let’s take a look at my picks for The Best Comfortable Sneakers for Women over 50.

The Best Comfortable Sneaks for Women Over 50

As we get older, our feet change and sometimes get wider. It gets harder and harder to wear uncomfortable shoes.  I was never a heel girl (too clumsy) but I have always loved shoes. With the onset of my 60’s I gained some unflattering foot issues (ie bunions). Hence finding shoes that don’t kill my feet and are stylish is a challenge. Here I am wearing Chuck Taylor’s two years ago.  These somehow appear on many of the lists for comfortable shoes.  I love them but they are not comfortable,  I wouldn’t last 30 minutes in them now. Geez I was a lot thinner in this picture (note to self drop 5 lbs)

The good news is I found a replacement (they did not arrive in time), the Taos Women’s Star Sneaker. It has that casual old-school vibe but they are comfy, come in wide widths, and in every color of the rainbow including red.

Without a doubt, the most comfortable sneak (although maybe not the prettiest) is the Skechers Go Walk.  I have these in black.  I still wear them on the airplane and for travel, they are just so comfortable.  They now have them in gray which are a little more stylish looking.

My current favorites, walking, working out (gardening) sneakers are the New Balance Fresh Foam Sport Lightweight Running Shoe (they are lightweight, with plenty of support, and the mesh top accommodates my bunion), and

The Adidas Cloudform 2.0.

I like having a lighter color shoe to go with my workout/at the computer outfits.

Elizabeth (aka the Vintage Contessa) got me the Ilse Jacobson Tulip a couple of years ago for my birthday.  I love them.

These are super comfortable, would be great for travel, easily cleaned, and well worth the money.  They come in almost every color in the rainbow. I am going to order the latte this year. This “dress” is no longer available.  It was originally from H&M but I have linked similar below.

A couple of other slip-ons that come in wide are on my radar. The Dr. Scholl’s Madison

And the Naturalizer Aileen (also comes in wide) If you have a bunion you know what I am talking about! As you can see these two are nearly identical.  I am going to order both from Zappos and give them a shot!

Also on my list is the highly recommended super casual Sanuk Pair o Dice canvas slip-on.  I get blisters easily so this one is appealing to me because of the soft back.

Last but not least is the much-loved Cariuma sneaker you have seen me feature in many of my outfits of the week.  Again, I have not tried this one but I would like to.  It doesn’t come in a wide which is the only thing that is holding me back. Love the red.  It too comes in numerous colors.

Comfortable sneakers have come a long way. If you have plantar fascitis or any multitude of problems, reviews say the Ikebukuro is the only sneak they can wear. They are pricey, so I left them off my list. I have heard nothing but good things about them as well.

Great post!, I have the bunion issue too. Agree that the sketchers go walk are great but not the most fashionable. I have a pair of Olukai slip ons that I picked up at TJ Max. Made of a stretchy mesh. Very comfortable for everyday. Thanks for the recommendations, Look forward to posts about the new house. But moving is the worst!,

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Catherine

Agree about the moving and the Skechers Go Walk. You would think they could make them a little better looking somehow! I love Olukai flip flops but they discontinued my favorite ones@

  2. Susanne says

Hello beautiful! I love love the Vionics Malibu and Pismo for casual running around in. Easy slip on and off and since I have a bunion and plantar fasciitis I love the soft as skin upper and the support. Support is not as good as other Vionic shoes but decent for short periods of walking around. Try them!!!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Susanne

The vionics don’t work for my bunion, but I will check out your suggestions. Always good to revisit!

  3. Marie says

Cindy, thank you for so many great comfort shoe options! My 87 year old mother has had a very difficult time finding comfortable shoes because she has Morton’s neuroma and needs a wide toe box. I ordered some All Birds for her and she loves them! She says she feels like she’s wearing slippers because they are so soft. She now owns 3 pair in different colors. And they’re washable! I just got some for myself – they are great!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Marie

I love Allbirds too. They were on my list last year but I took them off this year to make room for some new ones. Thanks for sharing. Great story!

  4. Juliet says

Love all these options, Cindy. I’ve had a terrible time finding lightweight, comfortable walking shoes that provide enough support. I’m going to order the New Balance you featured! xo

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Juliet

I have been wearing the New Balance for several years. When they wear out I buy a new pair!

  5. kathy chandler says

I needed this post so much! I’m going to NYC in a few weeks and have realized a need a great walking shoe. I think I’ll try the New Balance. Thanks!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Kathy

Sorry for the late reply! You will need a great walking shoe. I am on my fourth pair of the New Balance…love them!!

  6. Angela says

Have given up on sneakers as I cannot wear them without socks (rubbing=blisters) and all no show socks fall down as I have flat heels. Still have some Skechers but as you say, not very stylish. So my absolute favourite by far with several pairs in different colours are Rollie shoes. They are an Australian brand and their story is very interesting if you’re a traveller with weight restrictions. The “Derby Punch” style is great for warmer weather, and no socks needed, a big win for me. The colour range is fabulous but popular new colours sell out quickly.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Angela

I will check out Rollie’s I am not familiar with them. I agree with you about the socks slipping…annoying! Thanks for the recommendation

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Shirley

I have not but thank you for the recommendation. I will definitely give it a try!

  7. Annie Diamond says

Cindy, You make comfortable shoes look fashionable! So many great options! I have a pair of Cariuma sneakers and they are soooo comfortable. I love that you can buy extra laces in a ton of colors and extra insoles too….since I never wear socks! Shhhhh….don’t tell anyone! ha

  8. Amel says

Hi Cindy, loved your recommendations and took the leap! You are a terrific mentor, every single post there is a wealth of generosity and my life is better for it! Now, would you mind sharing product info on the light camo workout leggings??? Axo ty!

  9. Janet says

Kiziks. A new and wonderful brand. Ordered them, was so impressed I immediately ordered more.

  10. Mary Ann Pickett says

LOVE THAT WORKING OUT AT THE COMPUTER COMMENT 🙂
SO MANY GREAT CHOICES. GREAT ROUND-UP!! opps…just realized I had the caps on.

  11. Gray says

What a great an helpful post. I do not have foot issues, thank god, but I DO have wide feet and a small bunion on one foot. I love my sneakers from M Gemi, for casual wear. They are from Italy and are very comfy. I like On’s for walking and with yoga pants.
I also hear great things about Ecco – I have several friends that always wear them for walking when we travel.

    • Nan, Odessa, DE says

Wouldn’t guess you for wide feet.
I have wanted the birdies since I first met you on your post.
I need wide!!! Any suggestions for ordering Birdies? Don’t see them in wide. Help!
You look lovely in everything you wear.
Question: did you color your hair when the gray first appeared?
What do you use to keep it shiny!

  12. Karen B. says

    Hi Cindy,
This is so helpful. I need a new pair of casual sneakers, especially now that I’m attending my granddaughter’s softball games.
I couldn’t link to the list of other articles on comfortable, stylish sneakers.
    xo,
    Karen

  13. Jennifer says

You found such “cool-looking” comfy sneakers! My feet are a train wreck so I’m going to try some of these. This was fun! Thanks Cindy

  14. Linda M says

The problem with many knitted sneakers is they are lined with something stiff and unforgiving. For sneakers I love Hoka, which come in wide, and to me many styles look fashionable. Also Brooks have a wider toe box. I recommend going to a good running store. You will get a great fit and some of the sneakers are made for fashion or walking, not just running. I couldn’t wear a single sneaker before foot surgery on my Achilles’ tendon, except for some from the running store. They are used to every foot problem imaginable.

  15. AJ says

I live in sneakers! I have found as I get older I need more support in my shoes. I like many of the brands you highlighted here; especially Taos. I also like Addidas Luxe and they and Brooks are my go to walking shoes. Vans are fun and also comfortable. Thanks for offering some new to me alternatives.

    • Debbie says

Fit Flop lace up sneakers are comfortable for me, but hard to find in stores. I bought a pair of leather ones several years ago at a Dillards sale. They have an arch, which is a must for me.
I’m sorry I didn’t buy two pair. I always wear ASICS or FitFlops when I’m on the move, which is most of the time.

  16. Diane Nars says

Do you know of any pull on sneakers that are slim size 7.and comfortable for travel and walking.I am very limited in shoes . Thank you. Diane

  17. Arleen says

Skecher’s Reggae sandals are my most treasured shoes of all times. I walked all over Paris for two weeks in my sandals, have worn them for four years and they still look like new. I can wash them and they come out looking fresh and ready “for the road”.
Love the grey dress outfit. . .where did you get it.?

  18. Linda Carswell says

I discovered Ecco while I was living in Paris and walking a lot every day, mostly on cobblestones. They are so comfortable and come in lots of styles. I have really narrow feet (AAA), so finding casual shoes is always a big challenge.I have found Ecco shoes in the U.S. at Nordstrom.

  19. Barb says

I love your outfit in your last picture with you standing in the doorway —blue/gray lace dress with leggings. Can you share the details of your outfit?

  20. Denise M. Traylor says

Ecco are amazing! I prefer the lace up as do not have a wider foot but friends live the slip on!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Denise

I had a leather pair that I loved. The last pair I purchased were uncomfortable on my bunion! I know so many love them though!
