I interviewed my friend Sarah for Ageless Style and she was instantly a big favorite, so we decided to team up for a monthly series Signature Style with Cindy and Sarah. We have a lot of fun since we live on two separate continents and are always in different seasons. Two years ago I did a series on comfortable shoes that don’t look granny. It was a very popular post that even got mentioned in the Washington Post. Thanks, Ann Oldenburg. I intended to update it every year but here we are two years later. As we get older, our feet change, they sometimes get wider, we acquire bunions and other foot issues. It gets harder and harder to wear uncomfortable shoes. I was never a heel girl (too clumsy) but I have always loved shoes. Now that I am 66 I have gained some unflattering foot issues (ie bunions) so finding shoes that don’t kill my feet and are fashionable is a challenge. I will admit there are much better options now than two years ago. Let’s take an updated look at Stylish Comfortable Shoes that don’t Look Granny- Sneaks.
STYLISH COMFORTABLE SHOES THAT DON’T LOOK GRANNY-SNEAKS
As we get older, our feet change and sometimes get wider. It gets harder and harder to wear uncomfortable shoes. I was never a heel girl (too clumsy) but I have always loved shoes. With the onset of my 60’s I have gained some unflattering foot issues (ie bunions) so finding shoes that don’t kill my feet and are fashionable is a challenge. Here I am wearing Chuck Taylor’s two years ago. These somehow appear on many of the lists for comfortable shoes. I love them but they are not comfortable, I wouldn’t last 30 minutes in them now.
The AARP is usually a good resource for these types of things but, this list made no sense to me I have to be honest. Half of the sneakers are flat-out uncomfortable (you know who they are) and they aren’t very stylish either. Is it just me?
As always I have my favorites, but try to do my research because my favorites might not be yours. Why is it when you add mature, or older women to the search you end up with shoes that look like this?
My current favorite, walking, working out (gardening) sneaker is the New Balance Fresh Foam Sport Lightweight Running Shoe. They are lightweight, with plenty of support, and the mesh top accommodates my bunion.
I ordered these Rothy’s sneaks, because I LOVE the loafers. They are super comfortable, and you can wash them. I can’t wait to get these. I have tried a million pairs (slight exaggeration) of these slip-on sneaks and I have yet to find one that I think is comfortable. Two years ago I included the UGH Sammy Sneaker which runs narrow so it did not make my list this year. If you have a narrow foot and no bunions you might love this one for a great price on Nordstrom Rack.
I have not tried the All Birds Tree Runner, also mesh, which is a bonus if you have bunions. It allows for that extra stretch. The reviews are fabulous and the toe box nice and wide. Love this gray color, but there are many other options. Love the wool version for winter too.
Elizabeth got me the Ilse Jacobson Tulip last year for my birthday. I love them.
These are super comfortable, would be great for travel, easily cleaned, and well worth the money. They come in almost every color in the rainbow.
I ordered this red one on sale at Nordstrom Rack in red because I am trying to add more color to my wardrobe. There are many other Ilse Jacobsen styles on sale as well at Nordstrom Rack here. If you happen to have a granddaughter you might like these. I am going to order a pair for Summer to wear this Spring. I can’t order them yet or she will be wearing them in the rain. Sound familiar?
Comfortable sneakers have come a long way. If you have plantar fascitis or any multitude of problems, reviews say the Ikebukuro is the only sneak they can wear. They are pricey, they better be good.
The Vionic in different incarnations often makes Oprah’s list of comfy shoes. They did not make her list this year while some I consider uncomfortable did. I like the subtle platform of the Demetra. It is offered in many other patterns.
The Hattie Sunny with concealed orthotic support from Vionic has a great summery vibe with the jute feature.
I know many of you like a little larger platform sneaker for height. The J Slide Delia appears from the reviews to be the comfiest.
