Do You Love Old Movies, Purple Gardens & More

Happy Sunday! Thank you for joining Annie (Most Lovely Things), Mary Ann (Classic Casual Home), and me for our Sunday favorites. Do You Love Old Movies, Purple Gardens & More? Let’s get to it.

BEAUTIFUL PURPLE GARDENS ON INSTAGRAM

I found this shot of Ina Garten’s Garden on Instagram. Purple is the color that binds all the other colors in the garden in my opinion. You might enjoy my post Does Purple Have Power in the Garden, where I go into more detail.

INA GARTEN-GARDEN

This is her beautiful herb garden in Spring via Instagram as well.

This gorgeous garden is by the talented Nic Howard, photographed by Marianne Margerus, two beautiful accounts you may want to follow.

These pants are pricey but I just love the style and print. Love the J crew Lavender Chambray shirt & straw hat, as well as the Eileen Fisher sandals. I have been coveting one of the Dragon Diffusion woven bags (I think it was on last year’s wish list). Sunnies are from Peepers, and the wood earrings from Etsy.

FOSTER’S MARKET BEET & CITRUS SALAD

I had my cookbooks packed away for a couple of years with our moves. I know have a spot for my favorites and am enjoying them all over again. I have mentioned before how much I like the Foster’s Market Cookbooks. You can find them on Amazon here. Does anyone have the 25th Anniversary Cookbook? That is the only one I do not have. I know many have strong opinions about beets. I hated them growing up in the Midwest. They pickled them with a hard boiled egg concoction that was not appealing to me. I have made several beet salads over the years but this one from Sarah Foster is a favorite. The addition of the pistachios makes it extra yummy.

THE COLOR PURPLE

Lately, I have been revisiting some older movies that I enjoyed. Today while researching this post, guess what popped up? I am going to visit this one again. You can watch The Color Purple on Prime Here. What older movies do you love that you think deserve a repeat performance.

Cindy, I love these gardens. Sadly gardening is not my strong point. I had high hoped of having an “English” garden here in NC but that is a challenge because I live in the land of the pines. My entire yard is pine needles and between the trees dropping cones and needles, then trying to save all of my plants, bushes, etc from the deer I am pivoting in a new direction. I am going for English garden containers and a wold flower garden.
The outfit is beautiful! Are you getting the pants?
Sarah Foster is amazing, I have lots of her cookbooks. If I remember correctly she used to be a chef for Martha Stewarts company a long, long time ago.
    Have a wonderful week Cindy!

Purple in the garden … there’s nothing like it. These snaps of Ina’s garden are magical. The second one reminds me of the fabulous garden in It’s Complicated. Spring weather … and purple blooms … cannot come soon enough.xo

  3. Lisa says

Hello — I do love purple in a garden and have many allium and also agapanthus which we first saw at Monet’s Garden in Giverny, France, and have been able to protect over the winters here in British Columbia.

Love your fashions! But it would be helpful to know how tall you are….I wonder if some of the looks are not for me at 5’3”?

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Lisa

I had allium and agapanthus in my former garden, and I had to tear them out they became so overgrown. Where do you live that they do well? I am 5’4 about 130, would like to get rid of the 5 lbs that I gained but it does not seem to be happening!!

  4. Gayle Miller says

Cindy, I don’t consider purple to be a favorite color , I never wear it. But I agree with you about it solidifying the garden. I don’t garden anymore, but I still arrange flowers, and often add some purple. My Michigan childhood home had an “old fashioned “ lilac bush that never had an equal. Boy, do I miss that. Fiddler on the Roof, is a fave,, and the original Blade Runner for the way it looks. Kinda polar opposites, but who cares?

  5. Katherine says

    Hi Cindy,
Oops I forgot to mention my living favorite old movie —- Somewhere in Time so awesome. Howard’s End, Room With a View, and a few others that I can’t immediately think of.
    What are some of yours?

  6. Nancy says

The purple tree is gorgeous! Do you know what kind of tree it is? I can’t wait to make your beet salad.

    • Charisse says

I don’t think that is a purple tree, but clematis blooming full and gorgeous over an arbor.

      • Cindy Hattersley says

        Hi Charisse

You are exactly right it is clematis. It did not do well for me in my former garden…perhaps here…

        • Joanna says

Clematis burns easily. I have it in my garden and those that are in the sun get their leaves burnt – not very attractive. Those in the shade of the pergola do well. Perhaps, the hot CA sun is too much for clematis unless you plant in a more shaded spot, Cindy.

          • Cindy Hattersley says

            Hi Joanna

I had always heard that clematis needed it’s roots in the shade and it’s flowers in the sun. I think it was probably more of a water issue. Plants that require a lot of water really don’t do well. The other problem was my gardener was constantly hoeing mine up!

Cindy what a lovely post. Purple gardens are so beautiful. Makes me want to add more to my yard. I have lavender and purple salvia and the hummers love them. These pants are darling as is the bag and everything.

I love the Color Purple and haven’t seen it in a while. It’s a great time to watch it as the book is being banned in Florida in schools, libraries and in other states as well.

My favorite old films are The Right Stuff about the astronauts, Room With a View, which I can never watch enough..

  8. Sandra Sallin says

OK, I’ve got a question for you.I have a lot of purple in my garden. Lots of Salvias. I also have white. I’d like to introduce a little color. Which one?Orange? Pink I think it s too light. Do you think introducing another color is not the answer? Should I stick with purple lavender and white?

  9. Karen B. says

    Cindy,
I love purple in a garden. The images you’ve shared are so lovely.
I love the outfit of the week. The ideal spring outfit.
I always make time to watch Out of Africa when I spot it on one of the streaming channels. It’s currently free if you subscribe to Netflix.
    Enjoy your upcoming week.

Love purple in the garden and we have a large clematis at the entrance to our house. We we got married in 2007 Paul my husband loves purple …so he had a ribbon in his hair and so did I. Movies I watch all the time Somethings Got to Give and Its complicated . Would love to know the name and color of your master bedroom quilt ? Love the 2 pockets on the shirt..but I have a lot of shirts and $128.00 seems like a lot.

Cindy! I love purple in the garden and really everywhere! It was my friend Lorn’as favorite color and it always makes me think of her. I gave her a pair of purple Tory Burch ballet flats one year. It’s a shame she’s no longer with us to bring those back now that ballet flats are “in” again!
I love those floral pants…and how pretty they would be with a certain pair of Artemis loafers that I remember you wearing with a lavender sweater!
    xx

  12. Katherine says

    Hi Cindy,

The gardens that you shared are gorgeous. I love seeing purple in the garden. Purple is one of my living favorite colors to see in a garden
and to wear. I even like writing often with the Purple Pilot G-2 07 pens.

  13. Joanna says

I love the purple thread throughout your post. Those gardens are truly beautiful! I prefer white in my garden. It feels serene and pops in the evening light. I do have mauve wisteria on my pergola and a lilac tree close to the porch. The paleness of the flowers blends somehow.
Those cropped lavender pants are really cute!
I’m not a fan of beets but that might be because I’ve never had the opportunity to taste a really good recipe. 🤔

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Joanna

I hated beets growing up but I love a great beet salad. You might give them a try!!

  14. Lynn McClain says

Loved the purple! So much inspiration. My very large backyard is tropical with a lagoon pool, but I’m going to find some way to add purple. When it comes to old movies, at nearly 80, I have three to recommend: The Oscar winner, “Marty,” “The Catered Affair” (Bette Davis, Ernest Borgnine), and “Middle of the Night” (Fredric March, Kim Novak). All black and white, superb acting and stories and one interesting note – in one, 54 is considered elderly!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Lynn

I have never seen Marty…love the catered affair..must check out the other two! Thanks so much for the suggestions!

  15. Wren says

Those gardens knock me out they are so stunning. I love blue flowers except there aren’t many that are truly blue but purple. I’ve been gravitating to shades of lavender now that I’m silver ( although I don’t think I would go so far as to wear those pants). Have always loved periwinkle and wish that color would come into fashion again. We know how good the beet salad is at Giuseppe’s but I think they make the whole dish using one beet they slice it so thinly!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Wren

I agree with you about blue flowers in the landscape…very few..plumbago which I doubt will grow here (too cold in the winter). I don’t understand why periwinkle isn’t seen more often in fashion. It is a universal color that looks good on almost everyone!

  16. Karen says

    Hello Cindy:
This is sure cheerful, happy, post. The way ya coordinated Colors, to the Gardens, Attire.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Karen

I love Breakfast at Tiffany’s just revisited a few weeks ago…adore Out of Africa…just watched it again a few nights ago. The scenery, the costumes…& Meryl Streep and Robert Redford…what could be better

  17. Dianne W says

I lived in Durham NC for years and immediately flashed back to the wonderful food at Fosters Market which is still going strong. It was our go to place for wonderful casual food (also wines and other foodie items) to eat there or bring home. Such an amazing place. Thank you for sharing and the memories.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Dianne

What a resource Fosters is! I love her cookbooks…still some of my favorites.

  18. Mary Ann Pickett says

THOSE gardens are amazing! Love your outfit of the week, too. It is so fun how you organize a post like this with color.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Mary Ann

Sometimes I come up with the outfit first or vice versa and sometimes it has nothing to do with color…
