How to Refresh an Old Home While Maintaining its Charm

Many of you have asked to see more of my son and daughter-in-law’s charming 1930’s home. I thought I would share a roundup of the posts I have done on their home while I am enjoying my vacation in beautiful Savannah. Let’s chat about How to Refresh an Old Home While Maintaining its Charm.

They have since added shutters but here is a shot of the front of their home.

I believe they are the 4th owners of this wonderful home. Colin and Lauren own Farmer’s Union Pourhouse in Salinas a popular local watering hole that features carefully selected craft beers and wines. They were forced to close during the pandemic for over a year (they don’t serve food and had no outdoor space). During that time they landscaped their entire yard, painted their entire house, refinished their wood floors, remodeled two bathrooms, and their basement. I probably forgot a few projects, but you get the drift…they are workers!

There’s a reason historic homes hold such allure. They have unique architectural details, and a rich history. But let’s face it, sometimes those old-world features need a modern refresh. If you’re looking to renovate your older home, you might enjoy seeing how Colin and Lauren kept their home’s charm intact, while keeping it functional and fresh.

How to Refresh an Old Home While Maintaining its Charm

They salvaged all of the original interesting architectural details including the built in cabinetry, beautiful mouldings, and hard wood floors. They replaced the older windows with new ones that maintained the character but improved efficiency. They opened up some areas to create a more open layout. They used materials that complemented the original ones. Below are the posts where I have featured different areas of their home. They are currently redoing their kitchen. When that project is finished they will have remodeled the entire home themselves. Enjoy!

Colin and Lauren have a beautiful home.
They worked so hard on turning it into something so very special. I think Colin inherited that creative and hands on do anything from you both and Lauren is a natural at her vision and all the talents she brings to creating and restoring an old home. The bones of the home looks strong
and substantial. So smart of them to do all the work while the pandemic was happening. You must be so very happy for them, and just a tiny bit proud.
