How to Get a Fresh Collected Look in your Home

A young couple shows you how. Today I am joining my pals Annie and Mary Ann and a group of talented bloggers and we are talking about a Spring Decor Refresh. Those of you who are regular readers know that we are getting ready to move so our house is definitely not ready for Spring. I have been meaning to share the home of my son and daughter-in-law. So let’s take a look at How to Get a Fresh Collected Look in your Home.

How to Get a Fresh Collected Look in your Home

My son and daughter-in-law purchased a gorgeous 1930’s home in Salinas’ prettiest neighborhood 5 years ago and they have been working on it ever since. Their house has so much character. We just love it and it is three blocks from our current home. To say they are ambitious is putting it mildly. While their business was closed down for over a year during the pandemic, they painted their entire home inside and out, refinished all of their wood floors, landscaped their entire yard, redid their master bath and bedroom, and a bar area downstairs themselves. Currently, in the mornings and on weekends, they are redoing their jack and jill bath. After that, they will have their kitchen to do and then the house will be done.

This is their charming library. I featured it here on How to Style Your Shelves back in 2018. Many of the items came from Home Goods and many from junk shops and flea markets. The key is to blend them, so the Home Goods items are elevated and the vintage items are toned down to create a collected mix. The table and chairs came from Dovetail. Our son and daughter-in-law are owners of a craft beer and wine bar so this cozy room is their haven. They eat dinner at this little table when they get home late at night. To give it a fresh look for Spring We added roses that someone gave Lauren with greens from their yard.

Across from this seating area is a charming fireplace with a TV above. The painting is from Anthropologie and is miraculously still available. The lights are from Lamps Plus here. The Vintage African indigo pillows are available on Etsy here. The chairs and ottoman were custom-made by my amazing upholsterer in Salinas. The coffee table (version of the side table) can be found on Amazon here. The vintage telescope was also an antique find. To bring a little Spring into the room I added greens and branches from their yard in the Asian pot.

You can glimpse the beautiful entryway through the doorway of the library. The paint color is Glidden High Salute for the cabinetry, but it may have been tweaked a bit.

I grabbed a couple of ferns from CVS to add a little Spring in the entry. The light fixture is the large Hadley from Ballard Designs. This is a great pendant. It looks very much like the Circa pendant only much less expensive. The tables came from Target years ago and we found the rug at an Antique Fair. The family room, entry, living room, and dining room are painted Edgecomb Gray.

The Antique blanket chest was an inheritance from Steve’s family. Lauren added a modern print, a vintage tray and plant to make the chest look more current. A little green always creates a fresh look.

Their family room was once a cramped extra bedroom. They redid the bath and laundry which is off to the right a couple of years ago. You can read about that in my post-Clever storage ideas for a Small Laundry Room here. This room was opened up to the kitchen which has not been remodeled yet.

The pillows on the sofa are from Etsy and Target. All items that are available are linked at the bottom of the post. The coffee table is an Antique that was missing half a leg so cut down to coffee table size. It had been in our garage for years but worked out beautifully here. The pewter pitcher was an inheritance from Steve’s family. I grabbed greens from their yard and filled it to the brim for a fresh look.

The sofas were my daughters that were headed to Goodwill. I alerted Lauren & Colin (they bleached the heck out of them) and will soon have them reupholstered in a performance fabric. The seagrass tray came from Homegoods but I have linked a similar one at the bottom of the post. The drop leaf table is antique from Center Street Antiques. The goose was an inheritance from my mom.

The dog paintings on the wall are of their two beloved rescue pets Copper and Riley. They were painted by artist Patricia Huber. You can see Pats entire portfolio here. The baskets surrounding the TV are from Paulski Art on Etsy and linked at the bottom of the post. The side table is old but I linked an almost identical one from Crate and Barrel.

Adjacent to this area and right across from the unfinished kitchen is this beautiful Welsh Cupboard that we found at one of our favorite antique haunts Center Street Antiques in Soquel. Lauren sourced different ironstone pieces over time. I love the look of the white ironstone against the dark wood. The pitcher is filled with greens from their yard.

I LOVE THE COW HIDES AS THE SEAT COVERS!AND THOSE CHAIRS ARE VERY ELIZABETHAN!
WHAT DO YOU MEAN THEY BLEACHED THE HECK OUT OF THE SOFA COVERS………WHAT DID THEY USE?
CLORAX?I wouldn’t think they would fit into our machines?

      Hi Elizabeth

I bought those slipcovered loveseats for Jenna when she and Darius moved into their condo in Presidio Heights. They had them until they turned their dining room into Summer’s playroom. Jenna was going to pitch them and I said wait maybe Colin and Lauren will take them. They did have bleached them several times due to dogs jumping on them (Beau after jumping in their foundation and their dog). At any rate, they are going to be upholstered in an indoor outdoor fabric in the next couple of weeks.

    Cindy,
I love Colin and Lauren’s home. It is the perfect mix of a collected look. It’s light and airy and has a depth of character from the collected and inherited items throughout the home. I’m happy to hear the wine bar is still open after the Covid closure.

      Hi Karen

Yes their business is great the community immediately supported them when they reopened and they had a very generous landlord. They love their home. I will continue to feature it in the next few months.

    Cindy,
What a beautiful home! I love the antique touches, family pieces given new life and the Home Goods finds too. The collected look works for all ages and gives a house so much character. I love the hide caned chairs, such a cleaver idea. I agree with Lauren, can you come to my house and tweak the design, add a few twigs, ferns and antlers? Have a wonderful weekend Cindy, thank you for the always inspiring post! Good luck with the move.

  4. Téa says

What a lovely home! Can you please say what the little trimmed out divot is with the light coming through, that’s below’s the pet portraits? Is it a doggy room? A radiator? Access to something else? So curious. Thanks for sharing. AND, the ferns are from CVS the pharmacy store? Are they live or faux?

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Tea

It is a doggy door indeed. You have a good eye! I thought I should have mentioned it!

    Cindy!!
When and where are you moving? I’ve grown attached to your present home but will look forward to what your creative and artistic talents create in another home.

We are downsizing for a move in the summer and have an extensive 17th and 18th pewter collection. Can you suggest where I might sell the pieces?

Love your son and daughter-in-law’s transformation.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Diney

We loved this house but it was tough with only two bedrooms. The size probably is great but my husband wants something to do when he retires. Well he is going to get it!! We bought a home in Paso Robles about an hour and a half south in December but the owners have been renting it back. We will probably move around the 1st of May. It is not as big as our former home but not small! It has a mature garden (perhaps different than I would do but very nice). We will not have to tweak it much.

  9. PATti says

I went thru this library post twice and even went to the original posting on how to style shelves and still didn’t see any reference to the library blue/grey paint colour? Did I miss it? Thank you!

  10. Jennifer Griffin says

You’re not kidding when you say they’re ambitious! What a major accomplishment so far with the work on their beautiful home! These are great tips, Cindy. So happy to join the party with you today!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Jennifer

We always enjoy having you!! You inspire me to step outside my box with your colorful interiors.

  11. Lauren says

Can you come over each season and give us a refresh! We love everything and as always I’m in shock with what you can create with things that we already have. Thanks for making the house look so great!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Lauren

Ha! I always forget how cool your house is and how many great things you have! We need a couple more antlers for that basket as I stole them from the entry!

  12. kim says

Cindy I was so excited when you said you were featuring Colin and Lauren’s home, as we got that peek and I was in love with the home and their style! The blue den room is stunning. You didn’t show the fireplace which was also so unique. I think this home is beautiful because of the cool pieces and the pretty architecture. Their dining room is also TDF. You always know how to throw an antler in a Homegoods basket and make it look like you are at Ralph Lauren’s house. I am a huge fan and studying all you do as always. The pretty containers with greens really are all we need sometimes too. I am off to go hack away at some yard bits and try the same – and also order a few of these cool accessories. LOVED this! x Kim

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Kim

Their house is so fun. I will be featuring the dining room and living room in an upcoming post when the shower door is not on the floor of their living room. They have also ordered curtain panels so it will look prettier when they are up. More to come!

  13. Wren says

Lauren may not have your genes but she clearly has talent and and a style similar to yours. That she and your son have accomplished so much hard work on their own is amazing. Such good combining of inexpensive and heirloom pieces. Like Gray, those ironstone pieces are my favs but I love it all!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Wren

Colin and Lauren are the easiest design clients ever. They know what they like and they trust me. Their house is going to be a stunner when they get it all finished!

  14. Mary Ann Pickett says

They have such a lovely home!! It was fun to see it in person. Love the ironstone collection and the global textiles.

    REALLY pretty!

  15. Gray says

You are right! SO GREAT! They have a great eye! They sound like me and my hubby back in the day with this house. I love the whole thing – but mostly her collection of ironstone on the cupboard! So great! I plan on doing the same thing, if I ever inherit my mom’s beautiful pine Welsh Cupboard. I love ironstone soup tureens…

  16. Annie Diamond says

    Cindy!

I love Colin and Lauren’s beautiful home inside and out! What a genius idea to cut all the legs of the antique table to make it a coffee table. I adore the slipcovered sofas that they brought new life to! I would keep them this way, it looks so fresh!

The antique chairs covered in hide are just gorgeous in the library! Did you say you bought the ferns at CVS??

  17. debra @ 5th and state says
