Nine Simple Ways to Refresh your Home for Spring

There’s something refreshing about spring. What better way to shake off the winter months than to freshen up your decor? Confused about where to start, and how to transition your home decor from winter to spring? It’s all about adding fresh, bright colors and life. So, today let’s talk about simple ways to refresh your home for spring with my friends Annie (Most Lovely Things), Mary Ann (Classic Casual Home) and Juliet (Make Mine a Spritzer).

NINE SIMPLE WAYS TO REFRESH YOUR HOME FOR SPRING

BRING IN LIGHTER FABRICS

Swap out velvet and wool pillows and throws for linen or cotton. Heavier fabrics are great for fall and winter, but when the warmer weather returns, it’s time to bring out lighter fabrics in brighter colors. You can also incorporate florals to make the room feel fresh and inviting.

I ordered new linen throws but they did not arrive in time for my photos.

MAKE YOUR COFFEE TABLE SPRING FRIENDLY

Lighten up your coffee table decor and make it spring friendly in your living room area. Add fresh blooms and simplify the design.

INTRODUCE BRIGHTER COLORS

Add a pop of color. I switched out the subtler warmer colors on my throw pillows for a brighter orange, gold and blue to cheer things up a bit on my sofa.

BRING THE OUTSIDE IN ADD GREENERY

Another great way to give your home a spring refresh is to bring greenery into your living spaces. Even though we are not having spring weather, I brought in a couple of green plants to make it feel more like spring, and added olive branches to my bowl of pears from my local grocery store on my dining room table.

I added pussy willows from Trader Joes to my bar area. Did you know that pussy willows do not need water? They rot in water so they’re super easy to care for. These have been here for a couple months already.

ADD FRESH FLOWERS

You don’t have to be an interior design expert to know that florals are a major component of spring decor. I grabbed daffodils, alstromeria, and ranunculas from TJ’s and scattered them around.

Next, I added some daffodils from TJ’s to my back countertops

Then, I added a bowl of citrus (ie lemons) to the island counter.

SWAP OUT YOUR CANDLES AND BRING IN THE SPRING SCENTS

I switched out my winter scented candles for a fresher scent. If you can, grab candles that double as decor for an easy way to liven up the space.

CHANGE OUT YOUR RUGS

In my case I finally pulled the trigger and added some area rugs. I added seagrass rugs in the banquette and great room seating area. I ordered a great rug from Lulu and Georgia for under my dining table table. Back in the “old days” people would remove their rugs for summer and just enjoy the bare floors. I have done this in the past as well, but this room really needed rugs for definition.

REARRANGE YOUR FURNITURE

If your home allows, spring is a great opportunity to rearrange furniture to create an updated look for the season.

UPDATE YOUR SHELFIES

Spring cleaning can also double as an opportunity to transition your decor to spring. After giving these shelves a deep clean, I edited my bookshelf area, creating more negative space and a cleaner look. I added elements that looked bright and inviting in natural light.

REDECORATE YOUR MANTEL

I changed out my neutral shutter panels above my fireplace for my salmon cupboard doors on my mantel.

SHOP MY SPRING LOOK

I still need to add drapes and shades in these two areas. It is a work in progress. These are my favorite ways to freshen up my Spring decorating. Okay, Cindy, I’m off to buy a lot of lemons 🍋 ! Love that look, and they’re always useful for lemonade later on. I have some faux red and also yellow pears which look great…use red ones in the winter months with my seasonal decor, but the yellow ones are perfect for spring.
What do you do with your numerous pears… salads, tarts ?
Your sitting area is so welcoming and comfy. The British say “homely” , but that has a totally different meaning in North America ! I have more English reproduction oak and antiques, so darker wood, but I style vignettes very much like you… so always enjoy your styling advice.
Wish we had a Trader Joe’s up here on Vancouver Island … must be well priced judging by the daffodils!
    HAPPY SPRING 🍋☀️

      Hi Cath

My pears are faux..I am not a baker. I love to cook but am not a sweet lover and don’t enjoy baking. Trader Joe’s flowers are a “loss leader” for them I have heard. The daffodills were $1.99 a bunch!

Cindy, I love all of the pops of color from the flowers and fruit. Your house is always beautiful and the addition of the natural elements, rugs, etc just emphasize its beauty.
    Have a wonderful weekend.

    Cindy,
I’m more than ready for spring. The rain here in So. CA has been a little more than I like. Still, I know we need it so I try not to complain too much. Great tips and ideas, thank you.

I love all your ideas for spring. Can you tell me the name of the pottery barn rug used in your master bedroom and dining room?

    Thank you so much!

    Cindy!
Your home looks so beautiful! I love all the details! A big bundle of pussy willows on your bar look perfect! I never add water when I use them outside and they are fine, but I didn’t know that you shouldn’t inside! Good to know!
Every time I see your new home, I get excited to see even more! It’s so beautiful inside and out!
    Xx

      Hi Annie

Thank you so much…pussy willows last forever! I had no idea they did not need water!

The Rush House rug is lovely. In your photos it looks taupe. On the Rus House website it looks like natural sisal. Could you clarify the color.?
    Thank you.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Phyllis

The rug is actually seagrass. Seagrass does change color a bit as it ages. It can have a bit of a greenish cast when it is first made. Seagrass really repels water and stains. Sisal does not and stains easily

Great ideas, Cindy! Have I already told you I’m in love with your new home?! What would we do without TJ flowers … I’m going to make another trip today. Your pillow colors are gorgeous … love the pops of orange. If only the weather would cooperate .. so ready for spring! xo

Love your blog and follow you faithfully!
Love the spring decorating ideas. Was just so thrilled to see you using Quimper dishes in your table setting. I have been a collector for many years and they mix in so nicely with your decor.
    Keep up the good work!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Renate

I have had those Quimper dishes since my late 20’s. I don’t use them that often anymore, and they were stored away in the fixer upper. I am happy that I have space for them now.
