Walk In Closet Makeover with IKEA PAX SYSTEM

Today Annie, Mary Ann, and I are joining three other blogging friends to talk about closet organization and styling. My son and daughter-in-law bought a beautiful older house a few years ago and have been gradually restoring it.  Their craft beer and wine tasting business has been shut down for over a year due to covid.  They were planning to redo their kitchen, master bath, and bedroom, paint their house, and landscape it.  Instead of boohooing about being out of work they have done everything themselves (except the kitchen) while their business has been shut down.  One of their latest projects was to transform a small dark closet off their master with the IKEA Pax System. Let’s take a look at how they created a walk-in closet makeover with Ikea Pax System.

      Hi Kim

It is amazing what they have gotten accomplished since they have been unemployed. They are quite the talented team.

Beautiful and so inspiring. My walk-in closet is my next project and I plan to do it on a budget so this has given me some great ideas. I am curious though as to what did they end up doing about the ceiling light? And why wooden hangers? I have loads of velvet ones and wasn’t thinking of replacing them unless there’s a good reason to use a wooden version, Thanks!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Suzanne

My son worked for my husband for a few years so he is not your average do it yourselfer. He got rid of the boob light and installed recessed lighting in the ceiling. Another option would be adding a pretty chandelier.

    Cindy,
They did such a great job and the details are great. I hope their business is able to open again. What a great attitude during this trying time in our history.
I love these posts, thank you.

What a nice addition to their home. All these closet makeovers are great and inspiring for a Spring refresh.
Wish I had the extra unused room like Tamera Beardsley does. Her new closet & the words of wisdom she shares about:
“It’s about making steps to organize and beautify your space to meet your life needs. Every step in that direction
    is a statement in
    ~ Self Respect
    ~ Self Investment
~ Self Love and Care. ” This just resonated with me so much, I just had to share.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Mimi

I wanted to ask Tamera to join us but we already had a full slate. Love her closet and loved that post. She is so inspiring! I wish I had half her style.

How inventive they are . Bravo 👏🏻 and I adore the added baskets! I think that’s what my closet needs 🤔 you really have hit me thinking… and I find it really interesting how people store shoes. Some with heels forward, some ties, some half and half.. I wonder what the most common way is ?

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Sarah
Well since I do not have a lot of shoe storage, and will have even less, I store them half and half to save space!! I am going to have a minute closet in our new abode…challenging!!

  6. Juliet says

Cindy! I’m blown away by the IKEA closet system … wow. So many shelves (yay, more shoes!!!) and drawers. Fabulous. I love the seagrass rug … and adding crown molding is a wonderful finishing touch. Kudos to Colin and Lauren for tackling the project themselves and creating an amazing master closet. What a transformation! xo

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Juliet

First of all thank you for sharing your gorgeous closet and thanks for the kind words for Colin & Lauren. Everything they do is near perfection. They are hard workers, good students and have great taste!

  7. Marcia Rayne says

I love to see well organized closets! Encourages me to get off my duff and start organizing! When we moved to our retirement home , we had to share the master closet. It was so dark and dismal and where do I put my shoes?? I would LOVE to buy the IKEA Pax but for now I decided to use the spare bedroom closets. I have a tip though! Buy LED daylight bulbs! You will never regret it! Now I can tell the difference between navy and black! Ha! Thank you for the inspiration!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

Marcia you are a girl after my own heart! If you open my closet doors you might take your life in your own hands.Great tip about the LED bulbs! Don’t you hate going into a store and trying to figure out if it is black or navy. Is it our age?

  8. wren says

Good job! So many textural additions so that it’s not stark white IKEA. Do I see some MIL influences here (necklace, shoes)?

    • Cindy Hattersley says

Ha ha you know me too well. They did it all themselves without my help but yes the necklaces and shoes are mine. I tried to not put too many old lady influences in there!! You caught me!!

  9. Katherine says

Wow, what an outstanding job they did, talent runs in the family. Everything looks outstanding, they thought of everything.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

Oh and that Burgundy basket is so pretty!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Ana

I linked the basket in the shop the post. I bought it locally at Tancredi and Morgen a few years ago but linked to them on Etsy.

Beautiful closet and wonderful layout! Used the Ikea Pax Closet system in my home and haven’t looked back. We downsized and ended up sharing a closet that was smaller than my previous closet. Added to the challenge was a lower ceiling and HVAC ducts that took up valuable real estate. Built a separate closet for hubby and proceeded with the optimization. I repurposed old 42″ beveled glass kitchen cabinets, ($40, plus paint and new shelving), for a one of a kind shoe storage. My favorite part is the pullout jewelry tray with the glass top. Close second is the valet hook which allows me to set out an outfit complete with accessories. Have added more jewelry displays, art, milagros case, etc. at the top of the drawers. Was able to create a small alcove with a bench and ornate antique mirror. Difficult to photograph the closet because it is narrow, but it makes me happy every time I walk in.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Kim

Love your ideas that you shared. It sounds fabulous! Great idea with the valet hook!!

Congratulations to Lauren and Colin for making a delicious lemonaid cocktail in the age of Covid lemons. Practical, beautiful, personal. Ticks all of my boxes. My plan has been to turn a fourth upstairs bedroom into my dressing room and covid got in the way. Before Ikea was available in our area, my plan was to have crown installed about two feet from the wall around the room. The inside of the crown will hold a series of curtains. Inside the curtain space I’m using Metro shelving with hanging rods. Some sheving will hold shelves for folding things/shoes. Hope to get this project up and running soon.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Patricia

Your ideas always intrigue me! I am going to be challenged with my temporary space. Send a pic when complete!!

What a great transformation and productive use of their downtime! They will be all ready to grab and go once they reopen which I hope is soon. Would love to visit their craft beer and wine tasting business some day. They’ve got a lot of style and are inspiring.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Carol

We will have to meet there one day when they have opened back up!!

  19. Annie Diamond says

Cindy! I love how they used Ikea, but mixing it with baskets for storage makes it so beautiful and not at all Ikea. I love seeing people’s closets. Like seeing all the black clothing in one section and all the vests. The shoe storage and the hardware on the drawers. The seagrass carpet is perfect too and what a difference it makes!
