Five Reasons to Love the Historic Charm and Southern Hospitality of Savannah

We were totally captivated by the historic charm of Savannah, Georgia, from its cobblestone streets to its historic architecture. The rich culture, yummy cuisine, and incredible Southern hospitality in this beautiful always leaves me wanting more. Let’s chat about Five Reasons to Love the Historic Charm and Southern Hospitality of Savannah.

Five Reasons to Love the Historic Charm and Southern Hospitality of Savannah

Nestled along the banks of the Savannah River, steeped in history and draped in Spanish moss, lies the enchanting city of Savannah, Georgia. Savannah exudes a unique Southern charm that captivates visitors from everywhere. We last visited Savannah about 20 years ago. Much has changed but much remains the same as well.

Historic Landmark District

One of our favorite aspects of Savannah is its fascinating architectural history. From the beautiful Forsyth Park and with its stately fountain, Chippewa Square (made famous by the movie Forrest Gump), and anchored by the Savannah theatre , to bonaventure cemetery, the many monuments and cemeteries, and the meticulously preserved homes in the Historic District, every stop tells the cities story.

There are nine historic homes. We visited three on this visit. One of our favorite historic homes was the Owens-Thomas house and slave quarters (image courtesty of visit savannah)

Of the many beautiful churches in the city, Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist‘s beauty equals the beauty of the Duomo’s in Italy.

Culinary Scene

When we visit an area we try to enjoy the local fare, and no visit to Savannah would be complete without indulging in its low country dishes. From traditional Southern fare like shrimp and grits and fried green tomatoes to innovative fusion cuisine that showcases the city’s diverse culinary influences, Savannah offers dining options to suit every taste. Two standouts from our trip were the newer Common Thread, and The Olde Pink House. We did not indulge but the local Leopold’s Ice Cream always has lines out the door.

Natural Beauty

Aside from its historic charm and delicious fare, Savannah is also blessed with natural beauty that will take your breath away. The landscape is dotted with live oak trees draped in Spanish moss, azaleas in full bloom this time of year, all of which creates a scene straight out of a movie. The beautiful Savannah river with its 300 mile long coastal estuary is one of the largest in the state. If we had time we would have headed to river street for a riverboat cruise along the Savannah River.

Perry Lane Hotel

The Perry Lane Hotel is located in the heart of downtown Savannah, just steps away from Broughton Street, the Savannah Riverwalk, the Historic District’s beautiful Forsyth Park, and numerous museums and galleries. The hotel is beautiful with every amenity imaginable, and the service is impeccable. I couldn’t recommend it more highly. The concierge can arrange walking, carriage, or trolley tours, to the many destinations in and around the city. We would stay here again in a heartbeat.

We enjoyed a glass of wine daily prior to dinner at the beautiful rooftop bar.

Southern Hospitality

The most enduring charm of Savannah is its warm and welcoming atmosphere. From the moment you set foot in the city, you’ll be greeted with genuine Southern hospitality. Whether you’re dining at a quaint cafe in the historic district or striking up a conversation with a local at one of the city’s many squares, you’ll quickly discover that the locals of Savannah are as charming as their city.

I had many questions about the Bryn Walker pants in several of my photos on Instagram from Savannah. The pants are from Bryn Walker. You can find them at a loval boutique or Dillards. They are lightweight linen. I have them in five colors. They are my summer go-tos. This year they come in a pretty kelly green that I may have to snag.

In every corner of Savannah, from its historic squares to its bustling riverfront, the essence of the South is apparent, inviting you to slow down, take a deep breath, and immerse yourself in its culture. If you haven’t been you must go. We are enjoying the hospitality of Mary Ann and Howard Pickett here in Atlantic Beach. I will share this part of my trip next week.

    Hi,
My family has lived on Hilton Head Island for over 45 years and have seen all the changes that have taken place. Savannah has kept its wonderful charm and do hope it stays that way. Have you been to Charleston…another amazing southern city with great charm.
I blessed to live in Venice, FL which is also a lovely little town on the Gulf of Mexico.
Love the outfit as it is definitely my style.
Many thanks for all your suggestions!

My husband and I live in Columbia, SC, and took a quick trip to Savannah the same time you were there. On your next trip, check out the Bohemian Boutique Hotel on the Riverfront. Plus, if you didn’t see or know about the exquisite exhibits of prehistoric fossils and unbelievable geodes in the lobby of the J.W. Marriott, you need to make a return trip. Strolling along the Plant Riverside District is awesome too! Great shopping, restaurants, and rooftop bars! We Southerners love to show off our beautiful places to visit!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Janie

Thanks for the tips! We had such a short time there this time. Will check out the next time!

    Hi Cindy,
We have experienced Southern charm before and we all can learn from their way of being and doing. Their hospitality is like no other. I have heard that Savannah Georgia is beautiful. Thank you for sharing your journey. You both look relaxed.
I’m taking a second look at the Bryn Walker linen pants. What size are you wearing? Also is the waist plenty roomy for the size you purchased? Thank you. ❤️

Try the Grey over there too. Chef Mashama Bailey has put it on the map. It’s in an old Greyhound Bus terminal and is very well known. Call ahead for reservations. We live about 3.5 hours away and this is definitely on my bucket list. Many friends have recommended it highly.

      • Cindy Hattersley says

        Hi Genevieve

The only reservations we could get at the Grey were the pre fix which was too much food for us! Would love to try it!

  11. Ellen says

We enjoy “Slovannah” and its charming slow pace but we adore our Charleston for its history, architecture, vibrancy, and friendly residents! We traveled to Savannah to see Christian Siriano’s dress display at SCAD, which was outstanding. The Olde Pink House is a true gem!

  12. Bette says

My daughter went to SCAD, so I was lucky to have many memorable times in Savannah. If visiting, why not combine with Charleston? It’s right down the road and equally charming. Or maybe, a week in each place is just not enough! Anyone wishing to enjoy Savannah from afar should read (or watch the film) Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil — I think it really captures the city.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Bette

The last time we travelled to both Charleston and Savannah. We didn’t have enough time on this trip. We visited friends in Florida. Next time!

Isn’t Savannah beautiful?! My husband and I visited with friends who live in the area and we spent the day touring the city’s many sights. One of our favorite stops was the Prohibition Museum, complete with a Speakeasy serving delicious Prohibition-era cocktails. Looking forward to a return visit to this gracious, friendly city.
