How to Style Cashmere Casually After 50

Welcome to our Monthly Over 50 Style Edit. Each month Jennifer from a Well-Styled Life and I talk about something we think you ladies might be interested in. This month we thought we should chat about Cashmere and our personal “dream” Christmas list. Cashmere is definitely a splurge item but let’s talk about How to Style Cashmere Casually After 50.

I must admit I wear a lot of jeans. I love them, but I do like to “dress them up a bit”. The best way to dress up a pair of jeans is to add cashmere and interesting accessories. Cashmere is a bit of a splurge but there are a lot of great sales out there right now.

I have long been a fan of Artemis Design shoes. In my mind, there is no better way to dress up a pair of jeans. Here I am wearing my very first pair (purchased a few years ago) with a pretty cashmere v neck from Nordstrom. Artemis recently gifted me their amazing tote (love it). I added my turquoise earrings, bracelets, and pin that I have owned for years. You can find similar turquoise pins on Ebay here.

SHOP THE CASHMERE LOOK

This J Crew Cashmere poncho is 50% off and many of you have purchased it. It is flattering, soft, and comfy. I styled it with a J Crew cashmere turtleneck, another pair of Artemis design smoking shoes, a Gigi pip WREN hat, and Native American jewelry from my collection.

I snagged these Banana Republic cashmere leggings on super sale last year. I would own ten pairs if I could afford them. Here I am wearing them with a j crew black cashmere turtleneck (from several years ago) and a Pendleton shawl. It of course is sold out in this color but available on sale in this other red colorway that is just as pretty You can see how I styled this shawl in How to Style One Dress Six Ways here.

Has anyone tried the cashmere detergent Eileen Fisher sells on her website? I use The Laundress Cashmere Shampoo and machine wash on delicate and absolutely love it! You wear all these cashmere styles so well, Cindy! The accessories elevate each look beautifully.

Cindy love this post and all the great looks and gorgeous sweaters. I will have to investigate those cashmere leggings, but might be too hot for me? They look scrumptious.
And I have again started wearing the white blouse with pin at the neck and v-neck sweater. You reminded me of what a great look that is – just a little Cindy clone over here in VA! 🤣
    Merry Christmas Cindy!

  3. Pat says

    Cindy,
The blouse you have on with the red cashmere sweater, is that from H & M? I would like to get a white blouse that I can get the color to stand up. Thank you!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

Yes that blouse is from H&M and it is really good, quite surprising!! I got it for a post and expected to send it back, but it is a keeper! Wish I had purchased two!

Your Jo Malone choice is also one of my favorites! Have you ever tried her Pomegranate Noir? Another of my faves!!

Cindy, Beautiful looks. I could live in a cashmere sweaters and jeans.. I think that is all I need most of the cold months ! I bought those cashmere leggings from your blog last year and they are wonderful. The Artemis slides are so cool and give your outfits such a fun vibe. I need to get one of those J Crew ones you linked to on sale. They make some of the best sweaters I think. Don’t know how you did this and yesterday’s post, but you are giving so many great ideas we all need now!xo

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Kim

This week was/is a killer for both of us! I think you would love those Artemis slides but then I am a bit obsessed!!

Cindy, I love your style. Could you please share your “tips” for getting the brooch to look good? When I try it sorta flops about. Your’s always looks perfect! I’ve collected many (ok very many) vintage brooches and love the look. Thank you and Happy Holidays!

    Hi Cindy,
Great post! I love cashmere and have so many pretty sweaters that I love to pair with my jeans and leggings and leather pants (real and faux!). I wash them in cold on the gentle cycle in the washer and lay flat to dry, they seem to get better and better every time! I’m going to go order that purple one, I need that color to finish the rainbow of colors in my collection!
    You look great in everything!
    Xo Heidi

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Heidi

I do the same washer cold & gentle. Cashmere gets ruined if you dryclean. I don’t dryclean anything anymore except for maybe coats. Hate the fumes!!

HI CINDY! I WANT YOU TO KNOW HOW MUCH I LOOK FORWARD TO YOUR POSTS. YOUR STYLE IS SPOT ON FOR ME. I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED TURQOUISE JEWELRY AND LOVE THE CLASSIC LOOKS YOU PUT TOGETHER. THANKS FOR INSPIRING ME!!!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Sabrenia

I love American Indian Jewelry and have for years. I know it goes in and out of style, but who cares!! I am so glad you enjoy the blog. It means the world to me!

  9. Marcie says

Wonderful post, Cindy – so many great outfits. Anybody know where to find cashmere that can be washed by hand? I don’t like to dry clean anything.

    • Debbie says

You can wash most cashmere in the washer on cold. Put it in a lingerie bag. I do this regularly and it always comes out great. Dry flat. Also dryel is great! I rarely us a dry cleaners. Chico’s and Talbots have washable cashmere.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Marcie

I wash my cashmere in the washer in cold on delicate and never have any problems. It is actually not good for cashmere to be dry-cleaned. It breaks down the fibers. As I said above, I don’t dry clean anything anymore except coats, and since I rarely wear them that is practically never!

  10. Rita says

I love all your ideas. I would love to know how to tie a scarf as you did in the photo with the crème scarf and brown sweater. Thank you.

  11. Dianne says

You look amazing in each outfit! I bought Artemis shoes and still am working to get them comfortable – they are VERY STIFF to begin with (any helpful hints?)
I am a total cashmere girl. I buy favorite pieces and keep them forever. Cozy and classic – I wear my cashmere sweaters with sweats and jeans and pants and shorts….
You always look so elegant – thank you for inspiring!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Diane

Yes, they do take working in time, but then are wonderful. I stretch all of my shoes with shoe stretchers because of my bunion. Try spraying them lightly with cold water and wearing them. I sized up one time and regretted it. I find the slippers to be my favorites but I have blister issues with shoes too on my leg that was burned! You can buy shoe stretchers on Amazon. Spray with water, put a sock around the shoe stretcher and shove in!

      • dianne says

didn’t think to spray them first…. I will try! The Artemis collection really is colorful and fun and can go from casual to elegant. I so hope they become comfortable!

  12. Elizabeth@pineconesandacorns says

Cindy, cashmere is a wonderful wardrobe stable. Although pricy you can find it on sale and have it for years and years and years.
I love all of your looks! Off to check out Jennifer.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Elizabeth

I agree about cashmere as long as the moths don’t get it. All of my other sweaters wear out quickly it seems, whereas cashmere with care lasts for years.

  13. Jennifer says

You look amazing!! That Artemis bag is stunning. I love it matching your shoes. I’m a cashmere lover from way back, I just have to figure out how to keep the moths away. Great post my friend. As always, it inspires me to dress more creatively.

  14. Denise says

Lots of items put on my wish list. Such a great post and thank you for always sharing the sources! You make it so easy for me to find!

CASHMERE I ALWAYS THOUGHT AS OLD LADY SWEATERS!UNTIL I BECAME ONE!
THEY DO A DOUBLE DUTY JOB!KEEP ME WARM ON COLD DAYS AND LOOK PULLED TOGETHER!
I AM STILL WEARING MY MOTHER’S AND RECENTLY I FOUND OUT THIS PAST YEAR IF I WEAR ONE TO BED OVER MY NITE GOWN I SLEEP BETTER!I AM ALWAYS A COLD PERSON!I DONOT SWEAT SO I CAN USE THE SAME ONE OVER AND OVER FOR MANY NIGHTS…………….
I HAVE TO SAY THAT I LOVE THEM ON MEN TOO!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Marsha

I would say they fit true to size. The slippers are my very favorite, comfy right out of the box. I don’t think I could wear the loafers because of my bunion, but I have never tried them. The smoking shoes mold to your foot. They require a bit of breaking in, but once they are broken in they are great. They are very well made. I put them in this post because they are a splurge item and I know maybe some husbands might want to surprise their wives!
