First of all a disclaimer. We have just now moved back in so to speak into some parts of our house. I have been working off the kitchen table for months. We lived in this kitchen and the outdoors for months due to Scouty (not complaining we love him). That being said we still have most of our rugs in closets and under beds. Our coffee table is basically bare.

Incorporate Earthy Fall Hues

My upholstered pieces are all neutral, so it is easy for me to add seasonal hues with pops of fall colors. Nature is my guide for my color palette. I switch out my throw blankets, and pillow covers.

I sometimes switch out the architectural elements on my mantel. The large cabinet doors are from a cupboard in our bedroom that I like better without the doors. The inside is a beautiful salmon color which I often change out this time of year.

This year on the fireplace, I opted to leave the mustard side out with the same architectural elements, a vintage house vent, and lawn bowling pins. I only added faux leaves (which look quite real by the way) from Pottery Barn.

On the coffee table is an antique bowl filled with pumpkins and faux wheat. The bowl is layered with a vintage bread board (acting as a tray) to offset the newness of the modern coffee table.

Vintage Touches

Incorporate vintage bowls, pottery, boxes, baskets, and other decor items for character and history in your home decor.

The pot holding my utensils is Italian, the breadboard is probably from Eastern Europe. The candle is from Votivo.

Introduce Fall Scents

I am not personally a huge fan of pumpkin scented candles. I prefer earthy scents for fall and fresh for Spring.

On my sideboard I am burning Votivo Grey Vetiver. I also like Smokes Wood and Amber and Moroccan Fig.My all time favorite is Red Current which you can honestly burn anytime of the year as well. The candle anchors a vintage wine bottle and bronze labrador holding corks, from my friend artist Pat Huber.

This fall table vignette is one of my favorites. The fall foliage (faux oak leaves don’t they look real?) is also faux from Pottery Barn here. The candle is Forest Floor by Tatine. The pot I have owned for years The painting is antique as is the bennington bowl. The cow horn is naturally shed and the powder horn is also antique.

Gather & Display Organic Natural Elements

Incorporate fall Leaves, pumpkins, acorns, apples, pomegranates, gourds, fall berries, pine cones, oranges, cattails, wheat, or any other fall organic elements into your decor.

My centerpiece on our dining room table is the same every year. I fill our vintage dough bowl with pumpkins, moss leaves and gourds and call it good. My dining room chairs were custom made and monogrammed by Trish of Cottage By Design.

Create Earthy Table Settings

Keep your table setting simple and grounded to maintain that natural, organic feel. A rustic bowl of pumpkins compliments the colors of my plates. I have had this italian dinnerware for over 20 years, and found a few pieces on eBay that I have linked at the bottom of the post.

Handcrafted Touches

If you paint or craft artisinal pottery by all means display it. Share your personality and expertise. I can’t paint but my home is filled with vintage art, and my beautiful paintings by my friend Pat Huber.

I didn’t change out anything on these shelves except for the little painting by Pat Huber. I could have filled the bowls with pumpkins or pinecones, but I have a thing for chartreuse (and I am lazy this year). The little painting of Scout when he was a puppy is also by Pat Huber.

Shop your Home

Before you run out to the craft store and buy any fall accessories, shop your home. Try using your accessories in new ways in different spaces. I move my small decor from room to room with the change of seasons. This year my only investmentx were four realistic looking leaf branches, some faux wheat sprigs half off at Michaels, and way too many pumpkins!.

Cindy Hattersley's globally inspired den

I didn’t change a thing in my den this year. However the stump tables are MIA (Scouty likes to chew on them). They will remain in the garage until he quits snacking on them. The basket is missing from the coffee table. He loves anything wicker. You can see more of my den in this post How to Create a Globally Inspired Den.

Add Your Personality

This little corner cupboard in our den is an inheritance from Steve’s parents. It is filled with treasures that we have gathered on antiquing trips all over the country and abroad. The pig is newish (20 years old) and was purchased at a charming shop that no longer exists.

  1. I have two Golden Doodles who also are famous chewers. They are now 7 and 8 but my rustic coffee table looks a bit more “rustic” because they chewed on all four corners! It drove me crazy at the time, but now it is a sweet memory of them. And yes, all of my antique rugs have the fringe chewed on. If you love dogs…..you know they are worth it.
Yes, love your design posts! I’m an Interior Designer in Texas and I truly believe Texas and California share a “look”.

    1. Hi Becky

Sounds familiar! I agree Becky that we share a look. What part of Texas do you live in?

  2. I know I shouldn’t laugh but I think Scout’s an interior designer, perfecting the Labradesque-style! Either that or he’s building shares in a storage business because where else do canine threatened goods go?
I’m also in love with the small paintings. Especially the pup – is that a Pat Stuber? Perfection…

    1. Hi Prue

Yes Pat did the small painting of Scout in the cupboard. I love her small paintings. I need to do a feature on all the paintings in my home that she has painted!

  3. Love the pretty, easy touches. I rarely buy anything for fall – I have so much stuff. Just some pumpkins. And I put mums and cabbages in my garden beds.
Your house lends itself to this season so perfectly – you don’t have to do much!!
I remember our most recent puppy days. Challenging but well worth it.

  4. I absolutely love your decor posts!
Also, Scout is a beautiful Lab. We had black Labs for many years, until recently. They make wonderful pets.

    1. Hi Susan

Thank you so much. Labs are the best pets once you get through the puppy stage!

  5. The fabric on the pillows in the first couple of pictures [the salmon print] were really nice..as was the entire arrangement..where did the fabric come from? Perhaps you could include fabric ideas in posts.. thanks, Donnie

    1. Hi Donnie

They came from Etsy several years ago. I have quite the pillow cover stash. I searched for them but couldn’t find them. They are an Indian block print.

  6. Did I feel just a hint of fall in the air this morning? And heavy fog where I am. Maybe I’ll get inspired to remove all of the beachy things I have out as decor now. You’ll have to forgive Scouty his natural puppy instincts. How could you stay mad at that face?

  7. Cindy, EVERYTHING looks amazing, it’s the “Cindy touch,” that brings everything to perfect.

    1. Hi Diana

Yes the walls and the woodwork are Creamy by Sherwin Williams. The walls were painted this color when we purchased the house. We have an overhang (brown that causes the walls to have a yellowish cast). Try a big sample before you buy. It might look different in your home without the brown overhang.

  8. Lovely mix of organic materials and beautiful textiles. I always enjoy how you bring these elements together! Funny (not funny?) on Scout’s penchant for chewing all things wicker. Our first Norwich terrier was also a fan. I have a fond memory of waking up one morning to discover he had quietly chewed off the top layer of his wicker bed next to our bed during the night. Ah, the joys of puppyhood!

    1. Hi Pamela

Yes!! We hadn’t had a puppy for about 14 years, but my husband insisted on getting a puppy!!

  9. I agree with Denise – love your posts about your beautiful home. Once again, beautiful fall decor.

    1. Hi Carolina

Thank you so much. This blog began as an Interior Design blog. Fashion came later. I will always have a mix even though the fashion peeps do not love my design posts!

  10. You have such good taste- I wish I could have such talent. . But I enjoy seeing what you & others design. Thank you for sharing your beautiful home.

    1. Hi Georgina

Thank you so much. I really appreciate your kind words. I know my fashion lovers aren’t big fans.

  11. My favorite posts are when you show your own home – I study every detail. 🙂 Just beautiful!

    1. Hi Denise

Thank you so much. I really enjoy decorating for the holidays, but it is sometimes hard to find the time!!

  12. We, too, have puppy-proofed our home, having added a mini dachshund puppy in July….I’m hoping the rolled up rugs can return by the time it gets cold here this fall ……..there are also puppy gates and toys EVERYWHERE! Love your blog, Cindy! I look forward to each new one!
