Spanish Revival Architecture is characterized by its white stucco walls, red, clay roof tiles, and often colorful terra cotta tiles. Versions of these homes are scattered across the U.S primarily in California, the Southwest, and the South East. Spanish Colonial Architecture has its roots in Spain and Mexico. Today many well-known designers are reinterpreting the style to suit today’s lifestyles and tastes while maintaining its character. Let’s take a look at How to Get the New Spanish Revival Architecture.
How to Get the New Spanish Revival Architecture
This topic could not be discussed without including the work of the wonderful Madeline Stuart. No one does a better job of preserving the integrity of the Spanish Revival design with fresh updates. I believe this Bel Air project is in Madeline’s book No Place like home which you can find on Amazon here. I have given this book as a gift many times. It is a good one.
Love the addition of the large-scale modern art in this Bel Air project by Madeline.
This space below is from Madeline Stuart’s Santa Barbara Getaway (a small one-bedroom) packed with antiques and interesting artifacts. You can see the entire home here in Architectural Digest. Quintessence also has a video of this home on their blog you might enjoy as well.
Madeline really takes a slight hand in her restoration. She keeps many of the original details of the home but keeps the look current, as in this La Jolla project.
In my opinion, good design happens when you honor the original architectural design of the home. It doesn’t need to be heavy and dark. Fresh and modern is wonderful as long as you honor the bones of the home.
When searching for Spanish Colonial Interiors this home popped up. It is, apparently owned by Kendall Jenner, and designed by Clements Design. I couldn’t quite figure out their website but I linked it just the same.
I love the addition of the woven elements in this pretty project from Intimate Living Interiors.
Somehow this design firm was not on my radar. I can’t get enough of their interiors. They are based in California and Winter Park Florida. You can see their entire portfolio here. Love the beautiful tile work and texture in this living space.
I love the infusion of the blue to create a fresh look in this dining space by Studio Life Style featured in Domino Magazine. You can see more of Studio Life Style’s work on their website here.
Below is my own living room in our current home. We updated this room with a fresh coat of paint and removed the dated shelves from the niche. You can read about the updates here Fixer Upper Living Room Before and After. We added curtains and rods from Pottery Barn.
In the dining room, we also added curtains and rods from Pottery Barn. The shades are from Just Blinds
This lovely project from the much-beloved Amber Interiors is a wonderful mix of modern and classic. You can see their entire portfolio here. I shouldn’t say this but I have a feeling “these” light fixtures that are oh so trendy right now are going to end up in the landfill at some point. I know they are popular but I am not personally a fan.
This Spanish Revival home was updated with a modern look by Shapeside Interiors. The only addition, a fresh coat of paint and an outdoor shower. You can see more of this house in this Sunset article Spanish Style Home Refresh.
This Palm Beach project by Mark Sikes is just incredible. How could we not include a project by the designer who brought “sexy back” to Traditional Interiors? You can see Mark’s entire portfolio here
The ceiling in this entry hall is to fie for. I wonder if it is original, or if he had it done?
SPANISH REVIVAL ARCHITECTURE & DESIGNERS BOOKS
I am really loving all these new takes on Spanish Revival Architecture. I admit this post was a bit selfish. I am on the hunt for ideas for our new home, It is not a traditional Spanish Colonial Style home like our former home. It is more of a mix with different elements of Spanish Revival Architecture. I hope you enjoyed How to Get the New Spanish Revival Architecture. You might enjoy this post, Spanish Colonial Redefined, one of my most popular posts, as well as several other posts on Spanish Revival Architecture in the archive here.

I absolutely love the modern Spanish style and can’t wait to see what you do with your new home!!
Mumbai says
not because I live in Spain, but this style is so cozy and for me a bit better than the Provence style.
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Mumbai
I love it too. It is timeless!

I live in Santa Fe,M and have a adobe style home with Vegas and arches..so not Spanish but similar. I just do not see Blue unless in Florida. Coral seems more in keeping with the look. Warm colors not cool. Not a fan of going with a theme ! You know what to do in your new home..so have fun!! Love your new look..you go girl!!
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Eileen
We just love Santa Fe and have made many trips there over the years. The last time we made the trip was Christmas several years ago. I think that week had some of the coldest days on record! We took the whole family and had a blast in spite of the weather. Our new home has some elements of the Santa Fe look. It is more of a mix which I like. We are looking forward to the move with anticipation.
Cindy Hattersley says
P.S Eileen I agree with not needing a theme. Those of us who have collected items over the years love incorporating them into our decor.

They are all Beautiful I enjoyed this post well really all your post are great!
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Teresa
Thank you so much. I think there are some lovely ideas in all of the portfolios.

Love Spanish architecture. I also love the furnishings. I have a mix of Spanish, Italian, and French. Looking forward to seeing your new home decorated.
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Nancy
I love a mix too. It has taken me years to get my husband on board with antiques from different countries but he finally agrees. He loves American Antiques. I do too but prefer more of a mix to avoid the museum look.
Heidi says
Hi Cindy,
You’ve covered my favorite style, I love it so much! I’ve longed for a house with this type of character, with a courtyard, forever! But, we’ve been in a ranch style built in the 70’s, which is far from Spanish colonial.
Your home is so lovely and comfortable and welcoming. Can’t wait to see what you do in the new one!
XO Heidi

I was so excited to read this post! I needed to see it. We downsized from a French county styled home to a small modern Spanish style bungalow (new build). We have been working on adding traditional Spanish details i.e. beams, tile, etc. And some more contemporary twists, but trying to keep our personality as well. I’ve gotten inspiration from your beautiful home and ideas! Thank you!!

My house is 1929 Spanish Colonial Revival, and we are lucky to be the fourth owners. Pretty much everything has been preserved, except the kitchen. The wiring was updated along with the plumbing. I don’t get the need to be “modern” in an historic home. If it looks like I live in a museum, a comfortable, livable museum, then good. I love this house.

Great post and this sent me down a rabbit hole of clicking all your prior posts! I’m finally embracing my Spanish home after fighting with it for years… I can’t get enough of Spanish everything now!! Thank you
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Marcie
I am so glad to hear it! How did your console table work out? Did you get that resolved?
Mary Ann Pickett says
This is the style of the home I grew up in and I love it. Reminds me of home. You are going to love your new place!
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Mary Ann
We are looking forward to it!!

As the owner of a Spanish Revival bungalow built in 1929, this was right up my alley. One of my fav pieces of decor is my chandelier which was taken from an old house in SB, rewired and cleaned up. I found the book Casa California very inspiring. Not to be overly critical, but IMO, the Jenner design if off. Many times asymmetrical is more interesting but the 2 sides of the fireplace are so radically different, I don’t think it works. Just my observation and really, why should I care ( but we are studying design)?
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Wren
I bet your light fixture is fabulous! I have Casa California. The Jenner home is not my favorite either but I figured others might find it so!
Mary from Life at Bella Terra says
Cindy, our historic home is Mission Revival. It has a gorgeous bottle green tile roof and several arches in the exterior architecture. It does not have any of those gorgeous wood ceilings. Ours almost looks like a colonial on the inside. I love all the photos you show today with those incredible ceilings. So pretty!
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Mary
I bet your home and property are gorgeous Mary!
Rose says
Love this Spanish revival look. Your living room looks amazing. I look forward to your posts, thanks.
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Rose
I do too! It never gets old, does it?
Lynn says
Hi Cindy,
I would love to know what fabric you have on your sofa and if it is a performance fabric. I need to recover mine and am struggling with a light color, which the room needs, or something more forgiving since it gets so much use.
I really enjoy your decorating and your blog.
Thank you,
Lynn
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Lynn
It is a performance fabric. It is Rough and Rowdy by Perennials and the color is paper bag.
dana curtis says
Can u tell me where you got your wooden tressel tanle from?
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Dana
It was purchased from a company called Dovetail Furniture. It is a wholesale company.I believe the table is still available. You would need to find a store that carries their line or purchase through a decorator
Katherine says
Cindy, would you please tell me the name of the blinds you used from Blinds.con? Thanks, Kathy
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Kathy
I have been calling you Katherine forever. I now will call you Kathy if that is what you go by! I got mine at Just Blinds and they are Antiqua Natural. Good Luck!

Great post on Spanish Revival. Your Fixer-Upper living room is the best of them all. Captures all the feels and looks like real people live there. It is my go-to image for my living room plans. Have fun with planning your new home and have a great weekend!!!
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Holly
I just love this living room too. Our new home’s living room won’t have the Old house character but it has a lot of other lovely details!
