How to Embrace the Guipure, Cutwork, & Embroidery Trends

If you love a bit of interest, texture, and artistry in your wardrobe, you’re in luck. This season, guipure lace, cutwork, and intricate embroidery are all having a moment. I for one am happy about that. These details add interest, and sophistication to even the simplest designs—and they’re perfect for those of us who love texture of any kind. Today, I’m sharing how to embrace these timeless trends if you love them as much as I do! Let’s chat about how to embrace the guipure, cutwork, & embroidery trends.

What Are Guipure, Cutwork, and Embroidery?

Guipere Trend

Guipure is a French—or perhaps “fancy”—term for a type of lace fabri where the motifs are connected by bars or plaits rather than traditional mesh or netting. I had never heard the word until recently while searching for lace styles. I love lace as long as there aren’t too many ruffles and frills. I am especially fond of cotton lace.

This beautiful top, and pants are dressy enough to wear out to dinner or to a wedding or shower. You can see how I styled it multiple ways in my post How to Style Six Different Outfits from one Base for more ideas. Here I am wearing it with simple silver sandals. (similar here), a vintage clutch, and a necklace and bracelet from my collection

Cutwork Trend

Cutwork is a needlework technique where designs are embroidered and then spaces are cut out of the fabric leaving an opening or window.

I purchased this cutwork tunic, and pants from J Crew earlier in the season. I am wearing the pants in a six petite and the tunic in a regular 6. This set also comes in white. Every time I wear it I get compliments. Simple fitflop flip flops (use code Cindy15 for 15% off) complete the outfit with sunnies from Caddis.

This poplin cutwork ensemble is a favorite. I often wear the shirt with a pair of white jeans, or the pants with another top. It also comes in gold and white. I am wearing a medium in the top and It is extremely versatile and would be great for travel. I am wearing a small petite in the pants and a regular small in the top. Sandals are from Eileen Fisher and bag is from Mersea.

Embroidery Trend

Embroidery (I think we all know this one) is the art of decorating fabric with stitches in designs with a needle and thread. Embroidered details are timeless and classic .

This Sezane embroidered top (small) has my heart, styled here with a favorite Mersea skirt (no longer available in green) Anthropologie has similar here, and super comfy Camper sandals (similar here).

I adore this Banana Republic embroidered shirt that I wear on repeat, worn here with the pants from above, the great bag from Mersea, and my favorite fitflop flip flops, and Helen Kaminski hat, and Caddis sunnies.

Sezane Embroidered Dress

The craftsmanship on this gorgeous embroidered dress from Sezane (note the hem detail) is a readers favorite, worn with the Camper sandals, and Mar Y Sol bag.

It is so hard to view the beautiful details on this beautiful J Crew Voile ( oh so lightweight) shirt (medium), worn here with the fabulous Frame jeans (size 27)with the perfect amount of stretch USE CODE CINDY 15 FOR 15% OFF, and my fave Fitflop flip flops USE CODE CINDY15 FOR 15% OFF.

Frank and Eileen Eyelet Dress

Eyelet is huge this year. I love this new Frank and Eileen eyelet dress (medium),(it comes with an attached fabric belt). I added a straw belt from Anthro, Janessa Leone hat, and Dolce Vita sandals.

Gap Eyelet Set

This Gap top (actually considered a pj shirt $19!) small, and pants (run large I am wearing a petite small) set has a great luxe for less look that I love. I am wearing it with a wide leather belt (similar here) to keep the line long and clean, a favorite All Saints Cross Body, and comfy Eric Javits sandals on super sale. I am tempted to order them in another color they are so comfortable.

Banana Republic Embroidered Set

I don’t normally wear brown but I couldn’t resist this beautifully embroidered top (medium) and pants (6 petite) from Banana Republic. It comes in black and white also. Comfy fitflops, and Caddis sunnies complete the look.

Mersea skirt & janessa leone bag

Last but not least this crazy good embroidered ribbon skirt from Mersea ( small) gets compliments every time I wear it. I am wearing it with one of my favorite J Crew linen shirts size 6( on sale), Janessa Leone bag, and fit flops.

  1. Hi Cindy I meant to mention in my previous comment that I love FitFlops! I’ve been wearing them for years and my feet thank me. Love the arch support! Now I need those black ones with the lower footbed too.
Thanks for highlighting them for others that might find them just the right fit!

    1. Hi Debbie

I love fitflops and Steve does too. He can’t wear any others since his ankle was fused.

  2. Love all of the outfit Cindy! As always you look beautiful, stylish and inspirational! My favorite outfit is the ribbon skirt!

  3. I love your blog. I am making a trip in Sept. to Paris for two weeks and would love some advice on what to pack. It would be most appreciated. I am sure there are others who also would love this info. Thanks

    1. Same here. Arriving Paris last week of August for a week (then to Vienna and Florence). I wish I could order the J Crew sets, navy cut out too and trousers but the sizing too tricky when I haven’t worn that brand before. I think the sets would look great in Paris, but packing will depend on weather.

      1. Hi Susan
I am 5’4 135. The J Crew set is plenty roomy on me. Not to tight and not too big. Give it a try and send back if it doesn’t fit. It is really a fun set. I get compliments whenever I wear it!

  4. Cindy, I am not able to click on any of your highlighted items, the message shows a warning. This didn’t happen before you moved your platform to another system. Also, my system has blocked many scammers since the move. Thought you might want to know,

    1. Hi Evelyn
I did not move my website from Wordpress. It has always been on wordpress. I just had it updated. I have not heard of anyone else having any problems. I have not been using the widgets as often because many get confused. You must have a serious firewall! I use three different platforms, shopmy, impact, and ltk for shopping. If there is something you are interested in just email me and I can send you the link. I am so sorry you are having trouble

  5. That red has me gasping every time. I adore it.
Followed by the white dress – nicely styled.

    1. Hi Prue
I thought seriously before buying the red, but I am glad I did. I think it could be dressed up for a wedding or great for a dinner out with sandals. Thank you!!

  6. Frame is my favorite denim. Did you cut the hem on the white pants? I would love instructions on how to trim for a raw edge. And I I love the bucket hat. Can you see well from under the brim ? Thanks

    1. Hi Susan

Yes I did, there is nothing to it. Measure the length you want them draw a straight line with a ruler and pencil. Cut with sharp scissors…that’s it! I hope frayed hems never go out of style! Jeans are always too long on me, and who wants to pay a fortune to have them hemmed!!

      1. I cut length off jeans and I’ve also done that with tee shirts. They tend to be so long on me and I just got fed up. I just let it roll! I’m @5’3” 120lbs and short waisted.
        I love your blog!

        1. Hi Debbie

I am so thrilled that the ragged hem is popular! It sure simplifies shortening jeans doesn’t it?

  7. I’ve wanted that Suzanne blouse ever since you featured it and the dress on another post. Had to order! As always with a brand I’m not familiar with I hope the sizing works for me. I do love all these looks and I ordered the eyelet “pajama” top and pants as well. You inspire me. Thank you for all your work for us.

    1. Hi Charlotte

Sezane is fairly new to me as well. I feel like their sizing is accurate. They really have interesting separates I think. There is a store in Santana Row (which I used to shop at before we moved). I think the next closest is the LA area darn it!! I think you will love them. Beautifully made garments for the price.

  8. So enjoy seeing all these clothing ideas! I am not as brave as you are, ( I know if not now, when?) so seeing your combinations are inspiring to me to be more bold. Thank you!

    1. Hi Pamela
I understand …but why not? Show your creativity in your home and wardrobe and rock it!

  9. the photo of you with white pants and black top holding your hair back is totally adorable!!!!!
    Welcome Summer!

    1. Hi Diane

As usual that was an accident! I don’t have a “fancy” photographer…it is just me and my tripod! Sometimes the wind comes up at the wrong (or in this case the right ha ha) time. Thank you for your kind words. I am certainly no model.

  10. Hi Cindy – as always, you look great!
I purchased a white cotton eyelet skirt and white linen eyelet top with lovely wide sleeves at a street fair in Spain last year (very inexpensive!); I didn’t know that it would be such a big trend this year, but started seeing it everywhere. Those pieces make me feel so feminine and pretty when I wear them!

I love that you wore a pajama top! Some pajama pieces can function as street clothes. I wear a Ralph Lauren Hawaiian floral nightie as a dress in the islands (light & comfortable). I just purchased a lovely blue and white floral (blue & white florals are a hot trend this summer) pajama set trimmed with fringe. I plan to wear it as a pants set!

  11. Hi Cindy!
Great post! You are the best at doing your homework to bring us proper fashion terms!
    I love it!

I recently purchased the JCrew lace trimmed pin-tucked blouse you have linked. It is a light, versatile piece, making it perfect to pack for summer or warm destination travel.

I am loving your blog’s fresh new look!

Happy Summer to you and your family!
    ☀️ 🕶️🍷Lynne

  12. The word guipure was a new one to me also. You certainly did round up a lot of styles using these interesting techniques which adds just the right amount of je ne sais quoi (keeping it French). I was in a Sezanne store over the weekend on Santana Row and at both there and the one in Paris, I feel like the inventory is so much less than what they have on their website. I was disappointed not to find lots of beautiful temptations. However, on your blog, I clicked on lots of interesting items to find out more – thanks for the roundup and education.

  13. Fabulous selection of beautiful outfits. Love them all. Modern day sophisticated
