IS BLACK AND WHITE ALWAYS RIGHT

How do you feel about black and white? Do you find it boring or more of a go to in fashion and decor? It’s Sunday so I am joining my pals Mary Ann who is currently having a blast in Europe, and Annie. We are sharing our Sunday Favorites. Let’s talk about Is Black and White always right or boring in your opiinion.

SHERRY HART DESIGNS

I love Sherry’s style. If you follow her you know she is a big fan of black and white. I am particularly enamored of her carefully curated gallery walls. You can follow Sherry on Instagram here, and you can find her entire portfolio here.

PINE CONES AND ACORNS CARAMEL STUFFED BROWNIES

If you have been reading my blog long, you know I am not a baker. My friend Elizabeth is always baking something that looks irresistible. You can find her caramel stuffed brownies here, which she featured on her Saturday favorites here. The recipe comes from the cookbook Extreme Brownies (doesn’t this sound like trouble) here.

OUTFIT OF THE WEEK

Do you find you reach for black and white in your closet, or do you more often turn to color? I Tried my darndest to put these items together on a flat lay and make them look good, but it was impossible. It really irritates me that many of these retailers don’t display their items only on models. I am talking about you J Jill, Chicos and many others.

I don’t shop at Chicos that often, but lately they have many things that have caught my eye. This shirt is from their no-iron collection (I love their white no iron shirts). I think this shirt is darling.

I recently discovered J Jill Jeans, I love these high-rise denim crops. They are 25% off. They have just the right amount of stretch and are super flattering. I have this style in the regular jean wash. I think I need to order the white.

I love this white straw hat from Chicos with the black trim.

I think this outfit would be paired well with these Mark Fisher Sandals that are on sale at Nordstrom.

I’m a black and white girl with pops of color. In the ‘80s I had a black print carpet in my family room when my kids were little with a red and white check sofa and love seat. It was so cheerful. Now I want to do my family room in neutrals like Sherry, with accents of rich color. B/w suits my coloring too and I wear a lot of it. I get my color fix in my living room which has pale gold walls, rich gold loveseats , a rug with red and black , and a red Chinese chest. It all goes together so well and photographs beautifully.

      Hi Cindy Lou

I think I had a red and white check sofa at one time too! Your living room sounds lovely.

  2. Nancy says

I reach for black and white occasionally. I recently learned, (due to taking a style course with Imogen), that b & w are not really my “colors.” My closet is full of color and so is my house. I don’t think I could live without color!
Those caramel brownies sound so decadent! Can’t wait to make them! Thanks for the recipe!

      Hi Nancy

I could not live without color either. I love neutrals as a base but love pops of color in accessories and art.

  3. Annie Diamond says

Cindy, I love Sherry’s gallery wall and home. It’s black and white, but so much more than that. There’s texture, warmth and every shade of black and white.
Elizabeth’s brownies sound sooooo good! Caramel anything!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Annie

You are right about Sherry. She has it all. I constantly learn from her.

I love black and white artwork. I have alot of color in my home, I have worked black and white art in and around things!! I didn’t comment on your summer Julie blog, sometimes it’s hard for me to find where the comments go, but I loved the bangle bracelets I thought you look so cute in that blue outfit in Hawaii!! I always enjoy your articles I don’t always comment it depends on my timing!!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Martha

Well thank you for commenting today! We are so glad to hear from you!

I love black and white with a splash of color. Shari is an amazing interior designer and I never tire of looking at her projects. I hope that you are having a wonderful weekend in your new house.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Eliz

I like neutrals with pops of color as well. I don’t think I could ever go all neutral but I sure appreciate Sherry’s talent!

  6. Barb L says

I love black and white, my base for almost everything but I’ve come to realize I have a lot of color (in the middle of doing the summer/winter closet switch). The shirt is so great!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Beth

I love black and white as well as color. That shirt is a winner isn’t it? I forget about Chico’s sometimes. I love their no iron shirts in the winter. They are the best!!

  7. Heidi says

    Hi Cindy
I love black and white. I love color. Dressing myself, I do both, all the time! But my home is full of color and I think I’d go crazy with just black and white, although It does look very chic . It might fun to live with for a little while, but I know color would come creeping in right away!
That shirt is really great. I do not need it. I do not need it…..keep telling yourself that Heidi!
    Happy weekend
    Xo Heidi,

Black and white in fall and winter ..but not summer. Not in the house as I need a worm look for all seasons. Love your way of tying all the great shirts you wear..how do you do it? Look forward to you as a friend I can learn from every day you post!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Eileen

I do not do any of the fancy knots you see on the Instagrammers. I just tie my shirt in a knot and pull it down so no skin shows!!

  9. Judie Olivero says

I have a lot of black and white in my house, in my clothes, IN EVERYTHING!!! Love it, love it, love it!!!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Judie

Let’s hear it for the black and white camp. You can never go wrong with black and white.

  10. Ka thleen says

I love black and white when it comes to decor and fashion. It’s classic. Though living in a sunny coastal environment, I do have a lot of color in my clothes. I so enjoy your blog Cindy!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Kathleen

I like black and white as well as color. I totally understand your thinking. And thank you for the kind words. I so appreciate it.

  11. Joan says

The J. Jill jeans information goes straight to the black dotted shirt and I am unable to locate the white cropped jeans. Can you help rectify that? Thanks. Love your blog.

  12. Juliet says

When it comes to my house I love color, but in my closet it’s neutrals and I love black and white. I’m on the hunt for white jeans, many thanks for this tip. Oh and the movie article too. Sherry’s style is impeccable. And what can I say about those brownies. Elizabeth is the best baker. Yum! xo

  13. Vivian says

    Hi Cindy,

I am a bit confused by the person mentioning the way the retailers clothing is displayed? Please clarify. Thank you.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Vivian

i should have been more clear. Only a blogger would care. If you look on J Crew, Madewell, or Nordstrom’s website (many others as well) they will show the item by itself, so it is easier to place on a style board like I do for the outfits of the week normally.

  14. Pat says

I’m a Chicos regular, always find things I like and I know my size so they usually fit. I do a bit of B & W but basically, I am a color girl, my closet is a a riot of color…that makes me happy.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Pat

I love color and I love black and white. I guess I am a bit of an oxymoron!

  15. Karen B. says

    Hi Cindy,
I’ve slowly evolved in my decor and attire and try to reach for more color in both. Then I see some beautiful examples of this classic and find myself back on the ‘black/white’ team. 😊
    I love Chico’s no-iron shirts.
    Karen B.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Karen

I have done the same since I have gone gray/silver. I think more color is flattering.
