Fifteen Natural Creative Ways to Decorate with Pumpkins

There is something magical about fall, the beautiful foliage, the advent of cooler temperatures, and spending time with family and friends. Did you know that the color orange is connected with joy and the color yellow is associated with positive feelings? I love decorating for fall. I favor more organic, natural decor in my own home. I am particularly smitten with the quirky, textural heirloom pumpkins. You can find them everywhere. Let’s take a look at Fifteen Natural Creative Ways to Decorate with Pumpkins.

What’s simpler than filling a basket with a variety of pumpkins, gourds, pomegranates, moss and oak twigs? I created this arrangement for our lake house table many years ago.

Here I added pumpkins, persimmons, hedgeapples and fall leaves to an old board for an easy diy Thanksgiving centerpiece one year. I always love the glow votives provide. They are particularly inviting in fall. You can see more of this tablescape and six others in my post Seven Fall Tablescapes your Guests will Love.

At my son and daughte-in-law’s craft beer and wine bar (Farmers Union Pourhouse), I filled a vintage galvanized bucket with cotton and added a few pumpkins to the base.

This was our dining table in our Chualar home. Our friend Steve built the box out of old fence boards. You can read about that in An Organic Fall Tablescape you can Copy. I filled the box with white green and orange pumpkins, dried sunflower heads wheat and preserved leaves.

Here is the dining table from our Chualar home again. That year I used only white pumpkins, moss, twigs and green pumpkins for the centerpiece. I layered the pumpkins down the middle of the table on a runner that is hidden.

This is yet another version of our fall Chualar table. That year I purchased a giant vintage dough bowl from Patine. I filled it with a mixture of fall foliage and pumpkins.

Here is a simple pumpkin decor idea for your front porch. Fill the planters with mums and potato vines, and stack pumpkins in front. Note the interesting stem on the pumpkin on the left. You could add a little Halloween decor to the mix for halloween fun. How about witch on a broom in the center of the wreath to surprise the trick or treaters? The pumpkins are glued to the moss wreath with a hot glue gun.

This was the mantel in our fixer upper. I decorated it with sunflowers and a single orange pumpkin. On the coffee table is a terra cottta bowl filled with pumpkins and squash of all textures and shapes.

I created this table setting featuring Artful Home’s beautiful ornaments a few years ago. I filled a large vase with branches from our property and hung the ornaments from the branches. I tucked in pumpkins and leaves around the base.

Why not create a pumpkin planter. We found these big urns at Lowes last year. I think they are perfect on the columns at our entryway to the house. I surrounded the pumpkins with foraged fall leaves and berries from our yard.

I’m inspired! The temps look all over the place when I get back but the calendar will be saying it’s Fall. Hope I can pull something together from things collected over the years to come up with something a fraction as clever as yours!

Love all of your beautiful Fall inspiration Cindy!
I do not do much Fall decorating but I do buy lots of mini pumpkins to place in vintage dough bowls and on the tables.

    Thank you for sharing!

What beautiful tablescapes! I love them all. I don’t know where my local garden centre is getting their gourds this year, but they are gorgeous – they have very long necks and contain colours like chartreuse, lime, dark green, orange, rust, yellow and almost read! Absolutely stunning!

      Hi Denise

There are so many pretty pumpkins and gourds now. They are kind of pricey however. I guess we should all be growing them!

I’m reminded of the year that my husband and I created a beautiful outdoor display. We took an outdoor obelisk… maybe 4 feet tall, we bought a heap of decorative gourds, and small pumpkins, and layered them in the obelisk. We occasionally used floral wire to wrap around, and keep the gourds from tumbling out the sides.
It was in a flower bed in our front yard. Our neighborhood has many walkers, and we had lots of folks stop and admire the display.
It took a day or two until the feast was noticed by the neighborhood squirrels. First it was a nibble or two, then a squirrel smorgasbord. Chunks of squash, and seeds everywhere!
We admitted defeat, and cleaned up the mess. The next spring, we had to laugh when we noticed baby pumpkin plants popping up in the flower bed! Darn squirrels.

Beautiful post Cindy – love all your past iterations. I will decorate when I return from my trip – probably Oct. 1. I love natural things too, but I do have a penchant for fun holiday stuff additions – I guess carryover from the store and when Whitten was little.
