Wonderful Effortless Dresses for Women Over 50

Welcome to the Over 50 Style Edit with Cindy & Jennifer from A Well Styled Life. This one should be interesting. Neither Jennifer nor I are dress fans. I would much rather wear a skit or pants. Let’s take a look at Wonderful Effortless Dresses for Women Over 50, some casual dresses that can be dressed up or down.

Don’t get me wrong I love dresses on others. Most dresses just don’t work for me. I am long waisted. I rarely wear or look particularly good in patterns. I have big shoulders, butt, and a fairly large chest so ruffles of any kind are not for me. I am pretty sure I have viewed every dress known to man on the internet. I totally understand why so many of you love them. The idea of being “one and done” is very appealing. Different dress styles obviously suit different body shapes. Knee length dresses are not flattering on me, a mid or maxi works best.

WONDERFUL EFFORTLESS DRESSES FOR WOMEN OVER 50

That being said let’s take a look at the first dress. This dress is a darling Lily Pulitzer Arlyn dress that I found on eBay in what I would call the “prairie style” that is oh so popular right now. This dress is meant to be worn off the shoulders but I think I am a little old for that look. As you can see the dress is a bit short waisted on me, as is any dress with a waist. It is ankle length could be worn as a party dress, or a cocktail dress, or a wedding with dressier sandals, or even high heels if you can wear them. The smocked bodice is flattering if you have a smaller waist. It flares out at the hips which is good if you have a large bum like me.

This is how the dress should be worn. It is a lovely dress just not on me. It helped adding a belt, but this style really isn’t for me personally. I so wish it were, but I think I am a tad old for this style. Just sayin! The wonderful belt is from AndBe in Paso Robles. Anthropologie has a very similar one here.

The dress style that seems to be the most flattering on my figure type is the shirt dress. I really like this Frank and Eileen shirt dress. I am wearing it here with Sam Edelman sandals and a great bag from Etsy that I featured here on my outfit of the week a few weeks back. You can see this dress doesn’t exactly hit me at the sweet spot on my legs but it is close.

Frank & Eileen Shirt Dress-Cindy Hattersley

The great thing about shirt dresses is you can add a belt for a completely different look. I am wearing the same dress with a Dragon Diffusion tote and Sam Edelman wrap sandals.

Here is another shirt dress from H&M. It is $29.99. I am 5’4. I love the color of this dress but it hits me at the largest part of my calf which isn’t all that flattering. It would be great worn as a topper with leggings or pants as I am here, if you are my height or taller. I love everything else about the dress.

H&M-Green-Shirtdress-cindy hattersley

This Anthro shirtdress is a really pretty color of blue (not quite as vivid in person as it is in these pice). For me the length is a little more flattering, if maybe a tad long if worn as a dress. I am wearing it with one of my favorite Helen Kaminski hats and Artemis Design Kilim Mules, and a chunky necklace found on Etsy a few years ago. I could belt it to get it to a more appealing length.

This was a popular Zara dress from a few years ago. I have linked some at the bottom of the post. I think this dress “kind of” woks on me. It could be a tad shorter. I love the dress. I am wearing it with an old Helen Kaminski hat, a bag from Etsy and Dolce Vita sandals. I might wear this for a swim coverup as well.

I really like this CP Shades Maxi Dress. It is an a line shape which is flattering for my figure type. I purchased it at Maison Marianne In San Luis. You can contact Marianne if you are interested. I have also linked to a couple at the bottom of the post. I am wearing it here with the crossbody bag I love from Athleta, Olukai sneakers and my Paris cap from Anthro.

I also wear this dress as a swim coverup. It could perform double duty on a trip. CP shades garments are meant to be worn wrinkled. Here I am wearing it with my Helen Kaminski hat, Native American Earrings and Dolce Vita sandals. I own this dress in a stripe as well and have worn it to death.

I love this Alembika Urban Dawn Wonderful Dress. You can purchase this dress at 20% off by using the code CINDY20. The style is extremely flattering, is lightweight and comfortable. Here I am wearing it with leggings. Our weather has been horrible. When I took these pictures it was miserable out. I apologize for the bad photos.

Here I am wearing the same dress with a straw hat and bag.

Last but not least, this “dress” is actually considered a duster on Brixton’s website. That is the beauty of most shirt dresses, they can perform double duty as a dress or a duster. Here I am wearing it as a dress with sandals and a straw hat.

Here I am wearing it as a duster (the color is truer in the photo above) with the Alembika Iconic Stretch Jeans (use code CINDY20 for 20% off.) This little beauty is on sale by the way. All items are linked at the bottom of the post.

PRETTY DRESSES I FOUND ON MY SEARCH

I think you can see after reading this post why I personally struggle with dresses. Would you like to add a few to your wardrobe? How do you feel about dresses? Do you wear them, or do you prefer skirts and pants. What do you think are the best dresses for Women Over 50?

FYI, my friend Brenda from 1010 Park Place and I had a little mix up this month. Brenda posted yesterday on Ageless Style, and I will be posting next Thursday. Hopefully we won’t get our wires crossed next month! You can read Brenda’s Ageless Style interview here. I will link to it next Thursday as well.

Now let’s pop over and visit Jennifer. I can’t wait to see what she has to share. We sure struggled with this one!

All my thumbs way up for the black, off-the-shoulder dress. You look AMAZING!! WOW. Lose everyone of the other dresses. I can’t imagine those looking good on anyone.

  2. Elizabeth says

This is off topic, but I thought you had a travelers guide for Paso Robles somewhere on your website. I can’t find anything and we are planning a trip I’m May. Can you suggest anything? Thank you

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Elizabeth

I do not but I am working on one. I do have a Pinterest Board with my favorite spots. Email me at [email protected] and I will send you a list of my faves.

  3. Anne says

I agree with so many others that the Lily dress is FABULOUS on you and the off the shoulder styling is perfect. Really, you look stunning and youthful in this style and not at ALL “trying too hard”. Simply, beautiful.

I’d add that in ALL these pics your hair and sunglasses are the “accessory” which takes each ensemble over the top. I have hair the color of yours and it’s grown too long, thus, begging your permission, you are my new “hair model” for an upcoming cut! I adore the way you are wearing it lately; you recently mentioned a new favorite stylist … I can see why you’re crazy about him. The cut/style is awesome.

Your sunglasses (and glasses) are always SO fabulous. Have you done a post dedicated to them and I’ve missed it? They fit your face so beautifully without being too big or too small … they’re Goldilocks perfect and I’d love to know your favorite go-to’s in terms of brands or any links you could provide.

Thanks, as always, for all the beautiful inspiration, encouragement and education you provide to us “ladies of a certain age”! I always feel that in both your fashion and home posts you hit just the right note in terms of being aspirational, yet achievable, and especially appreciate that you often feature recommendations for affordable options (including ebay) without condescension.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Anne

I do love my sunglasses! I am going to see if I can get my friend Kyla to work with me on a post. She has amazing taste when it comes to glasses! I am a huge fan of mixing the high and low whenever it makes sense. I am a huge eBay shopper! Why not find something at a better price if you can!

  4. Nancy Brantley says

The Lily dress with belt looks best on you. I don’t like dresses that are straight and don’t show figure. I think straight dresses look granny. Dusters look good on you. But I wouldn’t wear anything I’m not comfortable wearing.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Nancy

I completely agree with you. I can only wear a straight dress if it goes in at the waist and flares out. Otherwise I look like a blob!!

  5. E E Deere says

Kudos to you and Jennifer for taking on this challenge.
I feel in my own life that I like dresses, but they have to fit or they just swallow me. Things got so much better when I found eshakti, https://www.eshakti.com/. You can choose the neckline, the skirt length, the sleeve style, and most of all for an extra $15 have the dress made to your own measurements (which helps with the long waist.) I go more for the solid colors than the prints. I was amazed that just sending measurements got me a dress that fit really well. I don’t have any personal tie in to this company, I just think they provide a great solution.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Ellen

Thank you I will check out eshakti. I am a bigger fan of solids as well. Thanks for the tip!!

      • E E Deere says

Sorry, I was offline for a while.
You are more than welcome, I hope you find something just right for you.

  6. Liana says

You look beautiful in all of your dresses but my favorite is definetely the Lily Pulitzer one, you have beautiful shoulders but if you feel a bit uncovered, perhsps a colorful belt to draw the eyes towards the waist instead of the shoulders. I am extremely modest and I don’t like showing skin but the one look I still wear is an off the shoulder.

  7. Elizabeth@pineconesandacorns says

Cindy, I agree 100% with every comment, you look beautiful in every dress. Especially the black one!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Elizabeth

You are very kind. I always love your dress recommendations, you have great style! I have passed the black lily to my daughter-in-law. I am afraid I just wouldn’t wear it. I do appreciate all of your kind comments though!!

  8. Katherine says

    Hi Cindy,
I used to wear dresses when I was able to wear all my pretty high heels and feminine sandals. Mostly I wore skirts. Like you I prefer pants only because I have “oh my feet” and have to wear specific types of sneakers.

I can tell just by looking at you that some of these dresses aren’t something you would wear and be comfortable in. My favorite is the first one. The way you styled the dress showing your shoulders looks very pretty and stylish on you. Having a long waist represents a big challenge in dresses like these. I have a long waist too, have the same issues. Women are so hard on themselves. You have an outstanding eye on what looks and feels right on you. Go with only clothing that you love love love .

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Katherine

You called it you know me to well. I try to present a variety of choices. Dresses are very difficult for me. I look best in those with a waist but they are almost always short waisted for me. I am glad to hear someone else is waist challenged!!

  9. Gayle Miller says

Cindy, the black shirt dress with the wide leather belt gets my vote, with the duster a close second. As Imogen says, you have to wear what suits your personality first and foremost. You have mentioned before that you are long waisted, as am I. Even though I’m only 5’ tall, a dress on me is the most flattering, because I can visually “raise” my waist to a more flattering position than my actual waist. In turn, this makes me have the appearance of longer legs. Yay! This is harder to do with pants. I couldn’t figure this out until I started following Imogen. Now I understand why skirts are a no go for me. The prairie dress raises your waist, and is flattering however you wear the neckline. I wish I had shoulders! Every fashion model has them, because the clothes hang great on the body. The wide belt also raises your waist and looks great! Lots of people struggle with proportions, but understanding them is key.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Gail

I always need a wide belt. That dress like all others hit me too high without the belt. I could barely pull it off with the belt. My daughter-in-law who inherited the dress is my height but with long legs and a short waist. It will be perfect on her as is. I will have to post a picture!

  10. Barbara says

Cindy, you look wonderful in all your dresses! I love the Lily Pulitzer on you. The shirtdresses look great, too – especially the Anthro one. But, you have to wear what makes you comfortable. For me, I love dresses! I find them more comfortable (nothing constricting around the waist) and much cooler in warm weather (would think they would be great for Paso summers!). I wish, however, brands would design more styles with a small (even a cap sleeve). So many, even those catering to a more mature woman, seem to be all in on sleeveless for spring and summer dresses – please, give us some sleeves!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

Yes please! Sleeves 3/4 are my favorite. I completely agree about dresses if you can find the right one!

  11. Wren says

I haven’t read the above comments but will go back and do so later. I wanted to put in my 2 cents worth about the Lily Pulitzer dress. That one looks spectacular on you and with that hat! I would run right out and buy it for my up-coming trip if it wasn’t in black but I’m not taking dark colors. I’ve always heard that a woman “of a certain age” can bare her shoulders because that part of the body retains it’s allure. This dress certainly highlights that! The other dresses are ok but not as flattering on you as what you put together with your pant outfits, IMHO. Good job compiling for this blog, however.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Pal

You are right about the shoulders as long as one likes that look! We are pants girls Wren!

  12. Sheila-Merle Johnson says

Oooh! Dresses! Yikes! I have not felt good in one since my hippie days and my treasured renaissance wench dress I made out of an Indian bedspread! At close to 80, small, short-waisted and larger hipped, I feel silly in many of the prairie styles, lost in shirtwaists, and exposed in bare-armed versions, so dresses are my nemesis. Plus I don’t like feeling my bare legs rubbing together and pantyhose are so out! How’s that for a rant? All that said, I do own an embroidered Johnny Was and a slinky hug-end mesh overlay – moth maxi and long sleeved, but my life doesn’t have many dress opportunities, so its pants and capris for me! I do love how well you style them for your shape and look.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Sheila Merle

We are in the same camp! That Johnny Was number sounds lovely and I can see you in it! No one would ever guess you to be 8-!

  13. Cath🇨🇦 says

Cindy, you got me researching what ‘short waisted’ means , and how that first black dress highlighted being short waisted… enlightening🤔. I am short at 5’3” but luckily balanced.
I could use longer legs, but “I yam what I yam “…a Popeye magnet from years ago! I have written about my leg ‘issues’ previously.
You crack me up with your description of your body… but you know your body , Cindy, and are being honest rather than hard on yourself.
The black dress looks beautiful on you either way… but if off the shoulder makes you feel like you are trying too hard, then I understand. It’s about confidence and comfort.
You appear to look more curvy and balanced when you add that beautiful leather wrap belt, and the long blue dress would less like it envelops you with the addition of a belt…as you said the length would be more in line with your height.
My favourite option on you is the light denim duster worn open with what you added.👍 I love the scarlet . I have a mock suede Sage green soft duster and will play around with ideas , since you have inspired me…as you so often do. I am a warm Autumn , so have some lovely colours to choose from in my wardrobe.
Does anyone out there recognize the UK brand Cath Kidson? When visiting Windsor , UK a few years ago, I found on sale two ‘tea dresses’ in beautiful florals. Sort of 50’s style…defined bodice with a slightly full skirt . I have coordinating L.L.BEAN cardigans , but as yet haven’t decided whether or not to keep them. At nearly 73, with a more toned body ( Reformer Pilates ) I can wear them well, but where? I’ll need a bit of a heel as flats would not be the right shoe. Will it be a case of feeling slightly overwhelmed and not so confident? I might try out when at a local restaurant and see if I feel good , or silly 🤡
They both might be going to my local consignment store , along with a Joseph Ribkoff casual navy & white striped long dress… purchased for a hoped for cruise in 2020 (!) …and weirdly I chose a size 8 which I definitely am not. Had to be a contortionist to get into it ! Someone less busty will love it, and I will enjoy the money coming back to me too.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Cath

I am actually long-waisted with short legs. Consequently anything with a waist Hits me below the boobs (not flattering). I have the same problem with tops but I can often wear a tall.I remember Cath Kidson. I think I may have purchased from them at one time. That duster from Brixton is a keeper. We have Brixton in San Luis now. I think it is a great season-spanning piece. Thanks for weighing in!

  14. Barbara at Mantel and Table says

Well I think you look fabulous in the Lily Pulitzer! If one has a lovely body like yours, one should show it off! And too old for off the shoulder?? Never! I’ve seen 30 year olds who couldn’t wear it as well. You look fun and carefree and young. I say go for it! 😊 Love when you show different styles. Thanks for keeping us abreast of what’s going on in the fashion world.

  15. Jaycee says

I think you are too hard on yourself (“big shoulders” – I think not) and that you look beautiful in all of the dresses you featured. Also, your styling with striking accessories is unparalleled and I lovecthexcreative ways you use scarves, brooches, etc. TFS.

  16. Sharon says

I too am not a dress girl – not really even a skirt one either – my legs are just crazy white and blue veiny in color with muscular calves (I’m highly critical so why go there). NEEDLESS TO SAY…..I LOVED that first dress on you both ways (even when you thought the waist was too high & with the belt). You really can rock it and regardless of age I’d wear it either way. Of course we have to “feel” comfortable in it so I get it. I do love how you opened up some of the ones that buttoned all the way down and since I like layers and long cardigans and kimonos I could see myself wearing a dress open with leggings of jeggings

  17. Nancy says

    Dear Cindy,
I will chime in with the others. You look wonderful in the Lily dress enhanced by your unique accessories. I too am long waisted with short legs. I have ALWAYS struggled with dresses because they do not fit my body, hit mid calf (ick) and/or are too “cutesy” for me. At 70 I have finally found midi length tubular t shirt style dresses, with or with out a belt, suit me. Sounds simple but these are hard to find. This was a great post. thanks!

  18. Mary Perez says

Hi Cindy, I too don’t gravitate toward dresses. I have lots of clothes, but not one dress. Do wear a long skirts with various tops and sweaters for more formal occasions. Have worn white linen pants, black fitted blazer and a hat to summer wedding. I have wide calves and no ankles, so don’t want to show off that area. But, also find dresses more uncomfortable to wear because the whole thing is moving when walking, sitting, etc. The top is connected to the skirt, so I think they can be more restricting than a separate top and bottom. You do look cute in several of the dresses, but for me if I’m not comfortable, it’s not a good apparel choice.

  19. Francesca B says

Lovely post thank you Cindy. I am going away this summer with my hubby for a trip to Croatia and Prague and l am on the look out for easy dresses.. I really like the Frank and Eileen but the price is bit much. I bought that beautiful Etsy rattan bag last year after your recommendation and got so many compliments So nice! Love your eye 🙂 ! Happy weekend xo

  20. Marta says

Consider getting your dresses hemmed to your sweet spot!
I have to get all my pants and dresses done. It is so worth it
    Great post

  21. Jennifer says

I love how you look in these dresses (fabulous) but what’s most important, is how you feel in them!! I totally get your comment on “feminine” I was a tomboy too so girly doesn’t feel authentic on me.
The belts make an amazing difference and add great shape. Your figure is so pretty it’s a shame to hide it behind a shapeless dress.
This post has been a real challenge. Let’s do something easier next month, my friend!

    • Kathy says

Hey Cindy, thank you for posting these dresses with accessory‘s and making suggestions about each. I learned a lot. And I don’t think I’ve ever seen you in some thing that looks bad. You make everything look good, not, vice versa.
My climbing roses are growing this year. I am so excited and cannot wait till they bloom. Thanks for telling me about them. Kathy in NC.

  22. Gayle says

Cindy, I know everyone needs to be comfortable in what they’re wearing. And I think sometimes we get used to certain styles because they are our go-to. However, I found the image of you in the black dress, off the shoulders, was absolutely beautiful! I couldn’t leave the post without sharing that with you.

    • Andrea says

I agree with you Gayle. I thought that dress was beautiful on her and the most flattering. Off the shoulder and with the belt!

  23. debra phillips says

first of all, your posts would no longer come up in my feed, no matter what I tried. today it magically appeared and to see you looking so darn cute., your brilliant accessorizing makes all the difference!

being a big dress person, loved this post. the “one & done” suits my lifestyle and dresses are much cooler in warm weather

    xo
    Debra

  24. Dianne says

I think you look amazing in dresses! I am a huge Frank and Eileen fan and have a couple of their dresses (sales are good!).
I love dresses – don’t know if I look good in them but i like how easy they are to throw on and accessorize and go.
Love the post – love how pulled together you are and show us how to do.
    Thanks!

  25. Maeve says

Cindy, I always love your style and like the Lily dress. It’s romantic. I do think, though, that we while we women of a certain age love the dress, it does not mean that it is age appropriate, which is different for all of us. I, for instance, would no longer wear a two-piece bathing suit even though my figure is better than those of many younger women. But, let’s face it, I have older skin. We still have shoulders, but we may not have good collar bones. (Cindy does.) I cover my upper arms but just found an elegant MOG dress — with lace jacket. I guess it comes down to Jennifer’s ‘wear what makes you feel confident’ statement. I think, Cindy, that your confidence and joy come out in the other photos where you make each dress your own with styling and panache.

  26. kim says

Cindy you look fab in dresses and you sure know how to style them and have many cute options. I am short waisted so that is also hard. Guess there is a dress for every body type.
Love the off the shoulder dress. Please don’t say you are too old.. You still rock it and have gorgeous shoulders so why wouldn’t you? NO rules remember?
I also afford the black Frank & Eileen with the woven bag. A fantastic look.
Love all these on you!! Now if the weather would just stop being awful we could get our spring on…
    xo

  27. Debbie says

Hi Cindy – While I think you look great in the dresses you show above, and I love the way you style and wear them, I am with you on dresses! And I am glad to hear that someone who looks as great as you do has the same feelings about dresses. I see them on others and love them but when I get one home I am so disappointed when I see it on me. In my eyes they accentuate my bad parts. It’s all about what we feel most comfortable wearing.

  28. Bette says

I’m wondering if seeing these photos of yourself, all together, has changed your mind about any of the dresses? IMO, the ones you like the most are the least flattering, and the ones you think are not for you are the most flattering. You have a gorgeous body, and the shapeless sack/shirt dresses do nothing for you. But, if the aim is comfort, I love them all!

  29. La Contessa says

    First black Dress!
What you don’t like is the lace bit at the Hem is my guess!
Look for maxi just plan cotton!
    Give it a try!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Elizabeth

I actually do not mind the flounce. I love that style. Maybe if I lost my five covid pounds I would appreciate it more. I loved the blue dress you wore to ur luncheon a couple of years ago, but have never found one that is quite right for me.

  30. Gray says

Ok lady…I agree with the ladies above! I LOVE you in the black Lilly off the shoulder. My favorite by far! I also love the white/black Zara number on you. And the first one, belted is good too.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

This is hysterical, I never expected this! I think part of it is the “femininity”. I was a tomboy growing up. I still feel like I am playing dress up in a dress. I keep trying…I still would rather wear a skirt and shirt or tee…

      • Gray says

Well, regardless of the fact that we all think you look fab in the dress, if you aren’t comfy in it, then it’s a no go! You and I are built similarly except for our torsos – yours is long and mine is short!

  31. Susan says

Don’t sell yourself short -you look fabulous in the off shoulder dress. Also love the last one – the duster

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Susan

That is very kind of you. That duster from Brixton is great, and it is now on sale.

  32. Kate says

I also think you look lovely in the LP off the shoulder with the belt! Can you link the belt – I want one!

Thanks for always brightening my day with your posts!

  33. Sharon says

The Lily dress is fabulous on you…worn both ways! I’m obsessing over the belt but don’t see it inyiur shopping widgets….any idea where I could find a similar one?
    Have a great weekend 😊

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Sharon

As I said above, I purchased from AndBe in Paso Robles, but I found a very similar one at Anthro. I do love that belt.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

Thank you so much Rebecca. I think it is a personal issue that I have with dresses. I am trying to get over it. I love them on others!.

  34. Rosemary says

Love how you styled your dress picks. They looked great on you and yet still comfortable.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Rosemary

Comfort is key. I have such a long waist so many dresses don’t work on me.

  35. Geraldine says

Though you might feel a little out of your comfort zone in the Lilly Pulitzer Arlynn dress, you look stunning in it!! You are absolutely NOT too old for this dress – it highlights your shoulders and collarbone beautifully. I’m searching for it in my size right now!

    • Sandy says

I completely agree! Out of all of the dresses, I think that one is the most flattering. I think it was Barbara Walters who said “The shoulders are the last thing to go so show them off!”

        • Cindy Hattersley says

          Hi Sheri

Well you ladies sure surprised me. I guess I just have a “thing” about dresses in general.

      • Cindy Hattersley says

I always remember that comment Sandy. We did a post a few years ago (I believe with Jennifer) Everytime I see that photo of me, it looks like I am playing dress up! Maybe I need to put on my big girl panties and get with it!!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Geraldine

You are very kind. Do not misunderstand me. I think others look great in that look. I am just not sure about it on myself! I would love to hear my family chime in!
