Here’s How to Dress Stylishly and Comfortably for Travel After 50
Today I am joining my travel savvy pals for some great travel tips. Are you tired of sacrificing style for comfort when traveling? As we age, it can be challenging to find the balance between fashion and functionality while on the go. Let’s explore some practical tips and tricks on how to dress stylishly and comfortably for travel after 50.

I am a huge fan of natural fabrics for their style and comfort level. The best traveling outfits offer multiple choices and combinations. Clothing lines like Mersea, Eileen Fisher, Athleta, and Frank and Eileen offer many options.
Here’s How to Dress Stylishly and Comfortably for Travel After 50
Embrace Versatile and Wrinkle Resistant Fabrics
It’s no secret I am a fan of natural fabrics. I know many of you worry about linen wrinkling. Embrace the wrinkles. The beauty of linen is you can wash it out in the sink with bar soap if need be. Hand iron it and you are ready for your next adventure. Cotton Gauze is another fabric that you can wash out in your sink and hang to dry. Gauze is meant to be left naturally crinkly.

A travel dress with hidden pockets that can be worn as a dress or a duster with pants is a great option. A T-shirt dress can be dressed up or down and takes up very little space.

Choose a Neutral Base for Versatility
If your travel wardrobe is made up of neutral colors, such as beige, black, and or navy you will have more options. A great pair of black pants, and a few blouses and shirts to compliment the core will take you a long way.

I love this Ibiza travel set from Mersea. It is extremely packable and can be washed and dryed by hand or in the washer. I took mine on our trip to the southeast and wore it multiple times. It also comes in a pretty camel color. You can see Mary Ann wearing it here.

Layer Up for Changing Temperatures
Travel Outfits this time of year are more predictable. Opt for lightweight clothes, but a jacket, sweater, or wrap might be necessary in the cooler evenings.

The Catalina sweater from Mersea is a travel favorite of mine and comes in multiple colors.

Opt for Comfortable Supportive Footwear
Try to avoid bringing heels unless you have an event that requires them. It is unlikely that you will wear them much if at all. Sneakers, sandals, and comfortable loafers will offer more options. You can find my favorite sneakers in my post Chic Sneaker Styles that Women Over 50 can Actually Wear here. I shared my favorite summer sandals in this post Stylish Comfortable Sandals that Women over 50 Love here.
Accessorize for Style and Functionality
Choose your jewelry and accessories wisely. Utilize accessories like a scarf/wrap that can double as a throw on the plane. Try not to carry too many purses. I like to carry a tote on the plane. I tuck my crossbody inside. A crossbody bag is great for ease and safety while exploring a new destination.

You don’t have to sacrifice style for $$. Old Navy’s crinkle gauze line packs a lot of bang for your buck. On the left I am wearing the skirt with the split neck top and on the right the pants. I apologize for the photos. It was hazy the day of filming. I will enjoy these separates during the dog days of summer here in Paso.

Travel Sets Offer Flexible Options
The popular travel sets allow for convertible clothing options.

The Frank and Eileen Malibu set is pricey but worth every penny. The set can be worn casually or dressed up. I would wear this on the plane coming and going and as separates in between.

This linen Tuscany set from Frank and Eileen can be worn so many different ways and can be mixed and matched with other separates. I do not iron my linen. You can wash it by hand or in the machine and pull in every direction and lay flat or better yet hang in the wind to dry.

Hi Cindy,
Have you found a sunscreen hair? I’m not a hat person. They are too hot. I have shoulder length salt and pepper hair. The sun hasn’t touched it but I live near the beach and would love to find a product to coat it and be free!
Thanks, Lynne
Hi Lynne
The Moroccan Oil gets great reviews, but if your hair is silver it could turn it yellowish. I love their products but quit using them for that reason.
I would give the Aveda a try.

Cindy, you’re a much chic-er traveler than me. You’re a much chic-er everything than me, but I digress. I love a dress to travel … and appreciate these links. I just want to be comfortable and not be embarrassed should I see someone I know who will tell everyone they saw me and I looked a hot mess. Sets are a great option too … and I never thought a wrinkled gauze, but that’s great, especially for summer. Clearly I need to up my game and love your ideas. xo
Hi Juliet
I have never ever seen you look like.a hot mess!
Cindy,
Your selection of travel outfits is outstanding!
I enjoying your choices of neutral colors and statement accessories for an unforgettable look.
I too am a fan of all the brands mentioned with the exception of Mersea which I plan to investigate.
The Malibu Travel set is at the top of my wishlist.
Hi Rosemary
Whenever I wear the Mersea or the Frank and Eileen travel set I get compliments. I think you will enjoy both for different reasons.
I love the look of Mersea sweaters and tshirts but being 4’11 and petite, I’m afraid they would be way too huge on me!
Hi Anne
I am 5’4 if that helps at all.
I was so surprised at the quality of the Old Navy gauze. I picked up four pieces for an easy to pack wardrobe for a quick Carribaean cruise. They have washed well and air dried with no shrinkage. I shopped with my granddaughter and she thought it was a great selection (for me) !
Hi Susan
So was I! I think what happens with that group is that often the products overlap and what you see in Banana Republic or Gap the quality may be the same or similar!
I like all your travel outfits, classy. I like to wearing my black cargo pants, the zippered pockets keep my passport safe and accessible without digging in my purse. The pants are pull on, don’t wrinkle, and come from Target 😃
Hi Nancy
Great tip! I have a pair of cargo pants from Athleta that I often wear in the winter for travel that I love.
Cindy,
I love all of your beautiful outfits! So many great combinations for traveling to your destination comfortably and looking stylish while on the trip.
You look beautiful in all of your outfits but in this post my all time favorite look on you is the 2 piece tan linen!
Have a wonderful weekend.
Hi Elizabeth
I love that Tuscany travel outfit from Frank and Eileen. It is so versatile.
Thank you Cindy for all the great ideas ! I love the way you style outfits. I try to duplicate your photos and I always get compliments!
Hi Beth
I am so happy to hear that. Thank you!
Hi Cindy. After looking at all the offerings from the other 3 women, I can say that you have nailed the best and most stylish looks. You pull everything off with such pizzazz! If I saw you walking past in the airport I would stop, nudge my husband and say, ‘Gosh that woman looks fabulous!’
I would only swap out your shoes in my luggage. For me, it would be soft white sneakers and Vivaia shoes. For someone with unfriendly feet, Vivaia’s have to be my find of the century! So comfortable, washable and yet give a completely elegant finish to a look. I now have 3 pairs and suspect more will toddle my way as the years progress. Elegance is my aim in dressing (not sure how successful I am but it can still be comfortable AND elegant) and shoes are the final piece to complete an outfit successfully. Cheers.
Hi Prue
I have a couple pairs of Vivaia shoes as well. They are just a tad narrow on my “bunion” foot but I love them. I adore the sling bag of theirs as well!
Cindy, you have been such an inspiration! I love clothes and now that I am traveling more, I love putting together travel capsule wardrobes. I have acquired some linen which I think is fabulous and I love that you say that you do not iron your linen. I think it looks great with some soft wrinkles (just like me – lol!). I am also repurposing and combining some of my pieces to create new outfits (again, inspired by your posts). Thanks for great ideas!
Hi Nancy
I love linen and I do not iron mine. I hang them up wet outside and pull them horizontally and vertically. I embrace what wrinkles are left!!
Great post thank you Cindy. You look amazing in the F and E sets. Love the Tuscany especially.Happy summer!
Hi Francesca
I love the Frank and Eileen sets, classic, comfortable and stylish.
is it weird that i think of you as i’m getting dressed and always wonder “what would Cindy wear? i cant help but want every single piece of clothing, every piece of jewelry, every purse and every shoe you have. ok, off to check out mersea. xoxo
Hi Nancy
Well I am honored. That is all I can say…
I’m smitten with the Frank and Eileen travel sets but will have to spend some time perusing the choices and reviews. Being short and curvy I’ve found that loose tops over loose pants can exaggerate my curves. Also some of the sweat pants can stretch out so then you are in some destination with the wish you could shrink them back. I’d love your feedback on the fit. High necklines don’t work on me. Really love your post on this as travel packing is always a bit tricky. The cotton gauze has always been a bell ringer for me. Honestly washing it out in the sink and hanging to dry in the breeze is my kind of wonderful. Wish there were Frank and Eileen shops where you could try on since returning them gets frustrating. If there were shops with who line I’d probably buy out the store. The three items I own are among my favorites and last a long long time.
Hi Leslie
Their sweatpants do not stretch out. They are really well made. Totally understand what you are saying. The cotton gauze from Old Navy a keeper. I am keeping mine great for our sweltering summer weather and such a great price. Our local chain Ambiance in Paso and San Luis carries Frank and Eileen but may not help you!
I love all of the looks you have put together. The last outfit, from Frank and Eileen, is my favorite. When I look at the website, it looks like most sizes are sold out so even at the higher price, they’re a hit. And one must remember its cost per wearing.
Now you need to plan that trip!
Wren you would look fabulous in the Frank and Eileen. They are good about restocking. You can come try mine on!!
Cindy! Love all your looks! The travel sets from Mersea and Frank & Eileen look great and so many options for mix and match! Love the neutral colors! Perfect for any trip any where you go!
Hi Annie
Thank you. I love both of those companies as well as Eileen Fisher. They last!
Dear Cindy
So many great ideas. I just went on a trip to oregon and took way too many shoes! I love the idea of sticking to neutrals and a few pairs of versatile shoes that go with everything, The many gauze pants and tops available now travel so well. Thank you for the inspiration. Anna in Arizona
Hi Anna
I am guilty of taking too many shoes too. I try to stick to three pairs and that seems to work
Thanks for recommending Mersea, which I’d never heard of before. And, I second your shout-out for EF basics, esp in my beloved black. My travel wardrobe is always based upon an EF black dress — sleeveless cotton now, long sleeve in fall and winter, plus interesting tops — linen or gauze for summer, sweaters and shawls for later. My only word of warning is, last trip I threw on a relatively new sweatshirt over my EF black dress for the plane ride, and spent the rest of the trip picking fuzz off the dress, LOL.
Hi Bette
Mersea is such a wonderful company. I cannot speak highly enough of them as well as Frank and Eileen and Eileen Fisher. Their styles last. At my age, I am not going to purchase the latest and the greatest, but those pieces that will last. Think CPW!
WOW…. you look stunning. I love you in the Mersea outfit in black so much I think I may have to buy it too. Since it’s so lightweight even though its black and it packs well…wish I had packed my brown one for San Diego now!
I like that: embrace the wrinkles!
This was fun!
Mary Ann you look so cute in the Mersea khaki version, I have been tempted to order. It packs beautiully and can be washed out, hung up to dry for travel.
Hi Cindy, these are wonderful looks (both polished and comfortable), and I’ve been eyeing that F&E Tuscany set myself. The belt is a great addition!
Susan you would look amazing in the Frank and Eileen Tuscany set with your beautiful coloring!
Cindy, I love how you style your EF basics — I love EF and also find her clothes are fabulous for travel. And I still love wearing black in the summer with neutral accessories, just as you’ve shown in your photos. There’s nothing like a neutral wardrobe any time of the year. You can always add colorful pieces, as you’ve shown here also. As an aside, I have a pair of EF black crepe, wide-leg crops dating back years, and I’m so glad I saved this item. EF basics really do last forever. (I’m a huge fan.)
Hi Cindy
I am learning as I progress fashion wise. I didn’t get Eileen Fisher, and now I am a huge fan. The same with Frank and Eileen. They have basics that are cut well and don’t go out of style so quickly. Mersea is another great company. They just get it!!
