Chic Sneaker Styles that Women Over 50 can Actually Wear

For those of us over 50 and beyond we want it all; comfort, support, style and durability. We prioritize functionality and comfort but we still crave stylish options that suit our own unique style. I have rounded up a list of chic sneaker styles that women over 50 can actually wear. From comfortable classics to retro interpretations, here’s everything you need to know to step up your sneaker game.

Chic Sneaker Styles that Women Over 50 can Actually Wear

#1 Classic White Sneakers

The classic sneaker has come a long way since my childhood of wearing Keds. They are often canvas and typically feature timeless designs that have remained popular for decades with clean lines and understated details. I love my Olukai Pehua Lei and my Superga Cotu sneakers. The Olukai’s can be easily washed as the inserts are removable. My friend Wren (the world traveler) recommended them. You can find my interview with Wren on Ageless Style here.

Eileen Fisher Sweats and Superga Sneaks

If your feet tend to sweat in sneaks, you will love the Olukai Pehua. They are made of a lightweight cotton mesh fabric. They can also be worn with the backs down mule style.

Here I am wearing the great Mersea Catalina travel sweater. I wore it almost daily on my last trip (it comes in 14 colors) with white denim jeans from the Gap and my superga sneaks.

#2-Athletic Sneaks

Everyone needs a good pair of athletic sneakers or “trainers” that are specifically designed to provide support, comfort, and stability. Whether you are walking, running, hiking or working out, comfort and support are key here. My choices are limited to the mesh styles that will accommodate my bunion. My go to’s for several years have been the New Balance Foam Roav. They have enough room in the toebox to accommodate my bunion and the mesh gives. Steve loves his Hokas and I hear good things about so many others.

#2-Slip on Sneakers

Slip ons usually feature elastic panels or stretchy materials on the sides or the tongue, allowing them to be slipped on and off without the need for tying laces. They are great for travel as they can easily be slipped off going through security. These vionic sneaks come in tons of colors and wide widths. I haven’t totally gotten on board with the sneakers with skirts and dresses trend. I think they work with sportier skirts and t-shirt dresses. Sneakers with the long flowing floral dresses (though so on trend) don’t work for me, but others can pull it off. I feel like this might be one of those trends we look back on and cringe.

I am wearing my favorite Lily skirt from CP Shades. They don’t have lily in the lineup right now (I hope they add), but you can purchase the fanny which is exactly the same but a midi length here. I am wearing it with the inexpensive zara tee, and my paris cap from Anthro.

#4 Retro Sneakers

Retro sneakers, “old school”, or “dad sneakers” draw inspiration from styles and trends of past decades, particularly from the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. Nike, Adidas Samba, Stan Smith, and more are very “on trend”. I do not own a pair of retro sneakers, but I have my eye on a few pairs. These trendy sneakers are hot right now, but I am not sure how comfortable they are. I would love to be able to wear a pair of converse chuck taylor high tops. I know the low tops are not comfy. And I had a pair for years. I might try a mens size. Apparently the platform sneaker version is more comfortable.

#Pop of Color

A pair of sneakers with a pop of color adds vibrancy and personality to any outfit, injecting a sense of fun and individuality into your style. Here I am wearing the gelato sneaker in red. These are super comfortable but they have not worn as well as I would like. I replaced my black ones with the vionic. And I think I will have to do the same with these eventually. I am wearing these comfy pants from Alembika, but linked a less expensive pair as well. The red bag from MZ Wallace is no longer available in this color but I have linked similar below. This Vera Bradley option is very similar and much less expensive.

    Cindy,

I am brand new to your site! Found you when i noticed you wrote about
grey hair. Mine is white and a beautiful color, but is falling out a LOT!
I think it’s from losing weight and Ozempic! Anyhow, I’m using Minoxidil and don’t know yet if it will work for me. But i was writing because I love the t-shirts you wear because the arms are long. Almost to the elbow. May i ask whose t-shirt it is? Would love to get in a few colors. Thanks and look forward to following you.

      Hi Annie

I do want it all!! And thankfully, comfortable shoes are actually in style now!

Cindy! I love a classic white sneaker and the way you’ve styled them. My downfall is keeping them clean. Total revelation that Olukai makes sneakers … and they’re awesome. Thanks for tipping me off, I’m going to order a pair. That Gelato sneaker in red is so good on you. Love how you style your chic sneaks. xo

      Hi Juliet

That’s why I like canvas they can be washed!!You will love the Olukais!

  5. Wren says

Thanks for the mention, Pal. You’re becoming quite the traveler yourself! It’s true, my Olu Kais have really served me well. I took white and navy on my last trip and not only were the colors perfect but I can walk for miles in them in comfort. I’m on team Cindy when it comes to flowy dresses and sneakers. I personally don’t like the look but maybe it’s all about comfort.

      Hi Wren

I am not big on the dresses and sneaker look unless it is a t shirt or shirt dress. I know it is “on trend” but the look isn’t good on me!!

Cindy I love how you style all your looks. Great choices of the ones you choose to show! I love Wrens’s lightweight option too. This was fun and I need to get my sneaker with more looks! xo

I see you are wearing your MZ Wallace bag cross body and up high. What do you think of the trend of wearing a fanny pack cross body? I recently purchased a Lululemon Fanny pack which apparently is all the rage for an upcoming trip. My adult daughters think I will look great, but I worry I will look silly. Thoughts on this?

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Kelly

I like the fanny packs. I probably wouldn’t wear it because it is the biggest part of me that I would only make it look bigger, but I have seen several women in our age bracket rock it!

Love your newsletter! My husband and I are planning a trip to your area this summer. Driving Hwy 1 from Santa Barbara- San Francisco. Any recommendations for food, hotels, winery in Casa Robles? Should we spend much time in Solvang? TIA
    Kathy

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Kathy

Solvang per say (although it is coming along) is not all that great yet. We love Santa Ynez…great wine & food and shopping. We like the Hotel Ynez and the Landsby. The new Auberge in downtown Los Olivos is fabulous. Their is a great lunch place in Buellton called Industrial Eats…fabulous for lunch. SY Kitchen In Santa Ynez is great as is Bar le Cote in downtown Los Olivos. There are lots of good tasting rooms in Los Olivos now as well. In Paso the best place to stay is Hotel Cheval. Their sister property, The Stables more casual is also right downtown. The Alegretto (not downtown) is also very nice. For food our faves are In Bloom, Les Petites Canailles and Il Cortile. Great luch casual lunch at Finca in the market walk. Fish Gaucho is good for lunch also. If you email me I can fill you in on the Carmel area as well

SHEIN LUNE Women’s Sleeveless Solid Color Dress
    SKU: sz2305249919739552
Sharing with you this incredible bargain basic summer dress! For $15! A decent salad costs more. All cotton – bought 2 colors as a test & just ordered 2 more. Comfy cut but not too wide like a tent. Can’t wait to style it with a jean jacket or light linen blazer or shirt. Looks good with sandals or my white leather sneakers. Vacation style!!!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

Thank you! I know people have had mixed results with Shein. Thank you for sharing a good one!
