How to Rock an Over 50 Travel Wardrobe Part 2

Welcome to How to Rock and Over 50 Travel Wardrobe Part 2.  Due to so much interest in this travel series, I am updating my post of two years ago to include more up to date information and replace outdated products.  I had just returned from a trip to Italy and wanted to share what I learned.

Travel Day 1

Wear the jacket and boots (your heaviest items) on the plane for warmth and to create more space in your carry on.  Spend the hours on the plane researching the area on the guidebooks you have downloaded on your Kindle or laptop.

The Athleta Stellar Crop fits like a legging with the support of a pant. This Athleta Rain Drop Jacket (just sold out so I have replaced with their newest version). J Crew’s lightweight Cashmere Crew can be thrown over a tee or shirt or worn alone. Can’t have too many leopard scarves this one is from All SaintsThis neatpack crossbody bag is just the right size to even stash your Ipad or small laptop. These Skechers go walk shoes are beyond comfortable and super lightweight. The Sympatico International Carry On is highly rated (I need this!) Don’t even think about traveling without a portable charger. The Anker Power Core is universally the most highly rated. I love the timex weekender watch attractive and cheap. Download Rick Steves Italy , and La Bella Lingua on your kindle to read on the plane.

Rome Day 2

Your first day in Rome you will be tired from the air travel.  Wear comfortable shoes.  You will be doing a lot of walking and getting lost.  The streets in Rome are very confusing. It is a little chilly so wear a wrap that can be removed later in the day if need be.

Rome Day 3

Day Three in Rome: more walking and not as much getting lost.  Tonight you will be enjoying the flavors of Rome.  So much to choose from. Time to add a few fun pieces to your basic lineup. You will be eating dinner close to your hotel so you can wear your fun mules.

My fav white shirt the Planet Artists Smock from Artful Home. LOVE this wrap from Peruvian Connection (need a fun piece or two to spice up your basic wardrobe), The Spanx faux leather legging can dress the outfit up a bit.  This croc clutch can double as a case for your Ipad or laptop in your suitcase. How about a fun pair of inexpensive tassel earrings from Bauble Bar. Add a pretty monogram bracelet from Moon and Lola, and a couple of tortoise bangles from J Crew to the mix. Eating Rome will help you find all the local favs. The pies de resistance these super cheap tassel mules from Target (super lightweight and can be tossed if you need more space in your suitcase on the way home.

Sienna Day 4

Day Four Beautiful Siena.  The only way to get around is to walk and there is a chance of showers. Bring your raincoat and fold your hat in your purse just in case. Enjoy every minute of this gorgeous city.

    Cindy,
Do you think your SPRING TRAVEL WARDROBE would work for September in Italy??? Love your blog!!!
    Peggy

    • Cindy Hattersley says

We went to Italy in March and it had just snowed in Tuscany. It was beautiful and in the 70’s most days. I never wore my boots once. Who knows! I am going to be doing a short summer travel wardrobe post in a couple weeks. Maybe you could combine!

  2. Nancy says

    Such an informative post, thanks!
We are going on a Viking River Cruise in September. We be in Germany for Octoberfest, my Sketchers will be the first thing I pack.

Hi! Thanks for these great tips! I remember you saying that you only wear supportive, comfortable shoes now. Do all of these recommendations have your tested approval? Thank you!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

I own the go walks ( I now know they come in many other colors thanks to A Taste of France). You could walk miles in them. I own the keen sneaker…very comfortable but not as comfy as the go walk. I do not own that particular blondo but own the others and they are waterproof (which is ultra handy) cut wider and I use inserts in them. I will link to the inserts in my final post.

Cindy still love this post as much as the original! Packing for Europe is always tricky. I have been there in scorching heat and when it was extremely wet and chilly- both in July! This is such a good roundup of cute shoes, layers and accessories. You have the best taste and style.I love it and going to share on my Facebook page..

I wish we were going to Italy this summer. I’m afraid the remodel has me grounded. The last time I was there – 2017 we did Rome, Sorrento and Positano. I think Italy still is my favorite over France and many other spots. Can’t wait for the lipstick post!!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Margaret

Welcome! Please share your input. We love hearing from our readers!

  5. Kelley says

Great fashion and super packable too! Wow, love that. For now I will watch everyone else pack and travel off to great destinations this summer 😉 too much construction this summer, but I will do my best to look cute at Home Depot. I promise

    Cheers, Kelley

    • Cindy Hattersley says

Ha Ha…if only people could see what I look like when I am gardening and home depoting…. scary…no makeup hat pulled down and yoga attire! Scary old lady!!

  6. Karen Bunch says

Oh my, there are so many separates that I love on this post and I’m not traveling anywhere this year! 🙂
I will be shopping this post, thank you.
    Karen

    • Cindy Hattersley says

Karen you are the best! I am only going on a short trip as well. Hopefully next year France!

  7. Celia Becker says

Just love all your choices Cindy. I’m sure you looked right in style with all those beautiful Italian women who really know how to dress. I’ve heard Italian women spend 50% of their income on their wardrobe and not because they have a lot of clothes, they just have very fine, high quality things that are not trendy, pure classic.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

We have a very good friend who is Italian. She doesn’t buy much but buys well. A good lesson for all of us!

Madewell looks like great jeans but I’m lost on their sizing methods… Basically what’s the size and brand of other jeans that fit you well? I’m the QUEEN of online shopping, but it’s not that simple! I guess I could order two sizes and send one… or both back. xoxox, Brenda

    • Cindy Hattersley says

Ha! I am the queen of online ordering as well. Rarely make it into the stores! I wear a 27 in Madewell. They seem to fit me well and they holdup as well. I also like DL Margaux intrasculpt but much pricier same size there as well! Hope that helps!

  9. Catherine W says

What a great and helpful post! Thank you. I agree with others that it would be helpful to do an early summer travel post. I am going to Croatia and Scotland in June and would love to get some ideas for clothing options 🙂

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Catherine
These posts are so unbelievably time consuming. I have been asked and asked to update this one. I will do Part 3 next week. The following week I am planning a 4 day warm weather travel post. Maybe that will help a bit. Thanks so much for commenting!

  10. Joanna says

I want to order the Planet Artist Smock. It only comes in two sizes which apparently fit a fair range of sizes. I’m afraid it may overwhelm me. I’m usually a small or #6 in a top. Do you find it too wide across the shoulders? I love crisp, white shirts.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Joanna
I responded to you via email. I am crazy about the Artists Smock. I was so afraid it would be too much fabric for me as well but I have found it works beautifully. Artful Home has an amazing customer service team. Contact them if you have any questions. They will be very happy to help you!

Joanie and I have known each other via blogging for many years. She did a post on my lakehouse and my daughter's wedding many years ago. She is wonderful and I love her blog. It was the first blog I ever read and she introduced me to seagrass!!

We're going to France in the fall and maybe Montreal in June. Are you really heaving along the Nikon? With telephoto? I grew up with 35mm and lenses and bags and weight. No more!!! Love the black and white with a dash of camel, a hint of leopard and a splash of red. My favorite neutrals.

    • Cindy says

No I would not be dragging the Nikon. Although I know some do! For now Europe is out of the question for me as I have an elder to watch out for.
