Outfits of the Week

Wedding Guest Outfit with grean and white dress from Zara

This pretty dress from Zara would be the perfect dress for a garden wedding. It could also be dressed down with sandals for a more casual outing in the English countryside!

Madewell Moss Green Pants and Top with straw accessories

I am obsessed with these popular sets and this one from Madewell is extremely reasonable. I love the embroidered detail on the side of the pants and the front of the shirt. I have accessorized them with J Crew comfy sandals, hat, and belt (also reasonable). This comes in black as well. I may have to invest in this one.

Enchanting English Gardens from Country Life Magazine

English Gardens Book from Country Life Magazine

Our climate requires more of a French style garden, but there is so much to learn from the English country style garden. I have several books in my library. You can find my list of favorite garden books here in my Amazon store.

The book English Gardens from Country Life Magazine is on my list.

Debra Phillips Small Group European Tours-featuring enchanting english gardens and more

Badminton House Garden Debra Phillips English Countryside Tour

Have you always wanted to tour the wonderful gardens in the English countryside or tour France with a group of like minded women? My friend Debra Phillips has been organizing small group European tours for years. Shall we go?

Citrus Glazed Grilled Shrimp Kebabs

Cindy Hattersle's Grilled Shrimp Kebabs

This recipe either with scallops and shrimp or just prepared simply with Costco frozen shrimp is a weeknight favorite at our house in the summer. I serve it over simple quinoa prepared in chicken broth with a splash of citrus. My recipe ( I don’t have one!) is loosely based on Ina Garten’s Grilled Shrimp recipe here. If you don’t have citrus salt, I highly recommend purchasing some. It is expensive but lasts a long time. I purchase mine locally at Etto Pastifico, but this citrus infused salt from Amazon is very similar. I use it all summer long on grilled fish, and much more. To prepare my kebabs I use our homegrown lemon olive oil and citrus salt as a marinade that’s it!

I am so grateful to all of you who take a little time out of your Sunday to be here. Thank you for reading Discover the Charm of English Country Cottages Enchanting Gardens and Fashion. If you have missed any of my Sunday favorites you can find them all here.

  1. I do love English gardens, but my front yard is south facing, and the heat is intense. My atrium can handle a few of the English looking plants. I have been bracing for summer lately since climate changes seem to have turned up the heat.
I hope you had a lovely Father’s Day with family.

    1. Hi Karen

I hear you!! I think we all are learning to garden differently!

  2. Hi Cindy,
My living favorite gardens are English and French gardens. The desert offers a total different kind of beauty. It will never be what I just love. In the Spring and different times of year they have pretty flowers. The water usage is nothing or very minimal so that is a good thing for our environment. Our rose garden requires LOTS of water. Right now it’s all buttoned up to survive our harsh intense heat.
Love the picture of your Steve and Scout luxuriating in your pool on the lounger. It’s one of the best gifts a father could ever ask for is a little time out in the day.
By the way I never got to acknowledge your gorgeous roses and garden. The “Time
Thief” seems to be haunting me lately. It would be nice if I could be like you and require very little sleep. Then I think I would get everything done.

  3. Happy Sunday! Thank you for posting your recipe for the kabobs…a good recipe for a single person too! It’s incredibly difficult to cook for one – recipes are always so “family-sized”.
Love House and Garden UK but they have disappeared from my inbox. Perhaps they are all subscription now. It’s such a happy way to style a home but I lack the courage or eye for it so I will admire and take in the little bits here and there. Same with gardening, I love watching Gardener’s World on BritBox. Quite a difference from my southern California garden but the Britts are the best and are now gardening with climate change in mind. Planting for hotter and dryer climates. Lessons are everywhere!
    Have a happy Father’s Day! xo-holly

    1. Hi Holly

I am glad you mentioned that about the climate change. Everyone is gardening differently with that in mind. I am going to check out gardeners world. Those kebabs are so simple but delicious!

  4. You look SO perfect in all your outfits, but I’m most intrigued by your midi and maxi outfits . I look like I’m overpowered by the lengths. You are 5’3” and I am one inch kess!! What can I do ???

    1. Hi Gloria

Most of the midis fit me like maxis. I don’t wear a lot of pattern, and I often wear a column of color. I think it gives the appearance of being taller.
