Butter Yellow: How to Style the Season’s Chicest Neutral

Happy Sunday and welcome to my Sunday faves with Mary Ann and Annie! This soft, creamy hue acts as a breath of fresh air, offering a subtle pop of optimism that feels both timeless and fresh. Whether you’re looking to refresh your capsule wardrobe with a great skirt in a pop of yellow or breathe new life into your living room with yellow accents, let’s dive into the Butter Yellow : How to Style This Season’s Chicest Neutral.

Hendricks Churchill Design

Hendricks Churchill is a new to me design firm thanks to the Country Living 100. They are a Connecticut-based architecture and interior design firm founded by husband-and-wife duo Rafe Churchill and Heide Hendricks, best knownfor their “distinctly American” aesthetic that blends historic preservation with unpretentious, shaker like interiors designed for contemporary living. Can I just say that I am so happy that American architecture and design is enjoying a comeback?

Love this bold take on this newly constucted farmhouse by Hendricks Churchill.

Beautiful yellow kitchen (would I be bold enough to go for this color probably not-I would tone it down several notches in my personal home), but I love the combination of the mustard cabinetry with what I assume is soapstone…just lovely.

Love the use of the ( I think) iron daybeds and the vintage ticking matresses.

Landman on Netflix

Taylor Sheridan is known for creating gritty, character-driven “neo-Westerns” that utilize plots that explore themes of moral ambiguity, family legacy, and often the harsh realities of the modern American frontier. I am fascinated by all that he does. The story is “set in the modern-day oil fields of West Texas. “Landman is a gritty drama that follows a crisis-managing “fixer” (Billy Bob Thornton) as he balances volatile family dynamics with the high-stakes collision between billionaire oil tycoons and the roughnecks working the rigs”. Landman doesn’t disappoint in my opinion. With a cast headed by Billy Bob Thornton (love that guy), Ali Larter, Jon Hamm, Demi Moore, Sam Elliot and more how could you possibly go wrong? You can watch Landman on Paramount here.

Outfits of the Week

This time of year we have shopped the sales and are thinking about how we can transition our wardrobe from Winter to Spring. I love a utility skirt (they are casual enough to wear almost anywhere I go) but are a comfortable alternative to pants. I spotted this skirt at Banana Republic and thought I would see how we could wear it now and later.

If I owned this skirt (tempting) I would wear it with my cashmere hoodie (similar here), my leather jacket (similar here), the great Parker Thatch crossbody that I have been coveting, my combat boots (love these waterproof ones), my Warby Parker glasses, and my Machete earrings.

Outfit of the Week Spring

For Spring I would add these great loafers from Gentle Souls (that I own), a cotton sweater from Eileen Fisher that I also own, my Tommy Bahama linen jacket, the same Parker Thatch crossboy, strap from Etsy, Machete earrings, and the fabulous Maison La Coment bandana scarf.

Outfit of the Week Summer

Here is the same great skirt, Adidas sneaks, great quilted bag from MZ Wallace, same Eileen Fisher cotton sweater in white, bandana scarf, Caddis sunnies, and New York ball cap.

A Dreamy Home Bar

I featured my son and daughter-in-law’s home that is for sale here, last week on the blog I saved thepièce de ré·sis·tance for today, When they bought their house there was an odd room in the basemant that was probably service quarters. There was a fireplace and it was finished. We will leave the mystery at that. They turned into the most incredible bar.

Healthy Broccoli Soup

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 medium onion chopped
  • 4 stalks celery diced
  • 2 to 4 garlic cloves to taste, minced
  • 2 pounds broccoli mostly crowns, chopped; stems, if using, peeled and diced
  • 6 ounces potatoes peeled and diced, or ½ cup medium grain rice
  • 2 quarts chicken stock
  • A bouquet garni made with a bay leaf a Parmesan rind, and a couple of sprigs each thyme and parsley
  • Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
  • 1/4 c greek nonfat yogurt
  • ounces spinach leaves or baby spinach 1 cup, tightly packed
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh herbs such as parsley, tarragon, chives, for garnish
  • Optional Garnishes
  • A drizzle of olive oil
  • a sprinkle of freshly grated Parmesan

Instructions

  • Heat the olive oil over medium heat in a large, heavy soup pot or Dutch oven and add the onion and celery. Cook, stirring, until tender, about 5 to 8 minutes. Do not allow these ingredients to brown. Add a generous pinch of salt to prevent this from happening (the salt draws out liquid from the vegetables). Add the garlic and cook, stirring, until the garlic smells fragrant, 30 seconds to 1 minute.
  • Step 2
  • Add the broccoli, potatoes or rice, water or stock, bouquet garni, and salt, and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat, cover and simmer 30 minutes. Remove the bouquet garni. Stir in the spinach and yogurt let sit for a minute off the heat. Add freshly ground pepper, taste and adjust salt.
  • Step 3
  • Using a hand blender or cuisinart blend the soup. Adjust seasoning to taste with salt and pepper. Serve, topping each bowl with a sprinkle of chopped herbs and with other garnishes of your choice.

I’m here to say I loved the soup! So tasty and healthy too! And yes, better the next day. Thanks so much for posting the recipe.

    Good afternoon Cindy,
Although I love this kitchen and the house, the color would not be something I would pick. The color of the house is the same color of the dining room at Monticello, Thomas Jeffersons house.
The bar and your sons’ house are beautiful! I love the mix of all of your antique finds.
Everyone is selling Spring clothing but it’s cold and I am still trying to savor winter. Spring here is way too short and then we are in the heat of humidity of summer.
Love these looks, skirts are a versatile addition to any wardrobe.
    Have a wonderful week.

    1. Hi Eliz

Yes I remember the dining room of Thomas Jefferson’s house. I always thought that was pretty. I could not go that yellow either Eliz, I would tire of it, but I sure appreciate it in others homes!!

Cindy— Yellow in all shades is so beautiful. The exterior of that home is gorgeous. And I love how your “outfits of the week” continue the theme of color and design!

  4. That yellow skirt and the way you have styled it makes me want to buy the various ensemble. The outfits are casual, yet modern and something most of us would wear as they reflect our lifestyles. My dad would have loved the antique gun as he had quite the collection being from a family of pastoralists

    1. Hi Susan

I love a utility type skirt that can be as casual as a pair of paints but sometimes more flattering. I did order it so you will be seeing it!!

  5. I forgot to mention that some Hitchcock chairs were painted yellow instead of black, but still have the metallic stenciling.

    1. Hi Patty

We have a set of yellow ones in our hallway next to our grandfather clock that I just love!

  6. I was so happy to see the chairs on either side of the fireplace. It proves that they’re timeless and mix beautifully with other furniture. I believe they were made by the Hitchcock Chair Co. which was started by Lambert Hitchcock around 1820 in Connecticut. If they are, the name of the company should be stenciled along the back of the seat. Some had rush seats and some were solid maple. These look to be from maybe the 1940s. In the 1990s my husband and I drove to the pretty New England town of Riverton, CT, to buy our bedroom furniture and china cabinet directly from the Hitchcock company. We’ve since purchased pieces from estate sales and antique shops. It looks like there also available from Chairish, 1st Dibs, eBay and the Hitchcock Chair Co. There’s more information about them, including the stenciled signatures, at this website https://www.jacquelinestallone.com/hitchcock-chair/

    1. Hi Jackie
Yes they are definitely of the Hitchcock style but not signed. We do have some earlier Hitchcock chairs in our home (they started signing them after 1825 I believe if I remember correctly). My husband and I had an antique business as a fun side hustle when we were young and traveled to New England and purchased antiques and sold them to upgrade our own collection for many years. We still love antiques but do not need a thing for our own home. I love the decorated American chairs. I think there is going to be a resurgence of American antiques. I hope so! Thank you for weighing in and I will check out your article.

  7. Your daughter and son in-law’s house is fabulous. I’m sure it will sell very quickly. Will they move closer to you?

Cindy! That’s a bold mustard yellow … I do like it with alongside the blue ticking mattresses. But the butter yellow of your son and daughter-in-laws gorgeous home … yes, please. What a fabulous home overall and that basement wine bar area. Wowza. It’s a showstopper, I’m sure it will be sold in no time. Wish I could buy it. xo

    1. Hi Juliet

Yes that yellow is bold, but fun! I couldn’t do it in my own home but appreciate it in others!

  9. Great skirt and I love the ways you have styled it. Your son and DIL’s bar area is fabulous – what a place to entertain! I also saw their listing (last weeks post) and got to see their beautiful home. Soup looks great (its snowing and 10 degrees) Perfect day for soup.

  10. Since I live in Fort Worth, Texas where “Landman” is set, to say the locals are entertained and “amused” by the storylines is an understatement! Texas is a state where everything is bigger and yes, we have a lot of people with more money than sense! I hope everyone takes the show with a huge grain of salt, because the “ladies” of Fort Worth are much smarter, classier, and nicer than the ones portrayed on the show. We are just as feisty! The one thing that I can wholeheartedly agree with the show on is that we love having happy hour at The Bowie House, and when we get a little sad, there is nothing like a trip to Neiman Marcus to cheer us up! Enjoy!

    1. Hi Becky

I have great respect for all of the Texas ladies that I know. Hopefully everyone realizes Ali Later isn’t for real!! She sure is good though isn’t she? The characters are just so good.

    2. I’ve read that despite signing a contract Billy Bob is off the show. I hope this is not true it wouldn’t be a show without him.

      1. I read Billy Bob Thornton had signed on for several years. Agree there is no Landman without him. I really enjoy the series, but I do think Taylor Sheridan has a problem with women. The only realistic character is the young widow and perhaps Demi Moore. The mother and daughter are ridiculous and the female lawyer, a trope. The only realistic female character I have watched in any of his shows was Helen Mirren as a weather beaten rancher’s wife.

        1. Hi Susan

Taylor Sheridan’s “women” are total characters aren’t they? I never really thought about it. It is going to be interesting to see how Demi Moore’s character evolves. Landman without Billy Bob is like Yellowstone without Costner…

      2. Hi Cindy

I saw him interviewed a while back and he said he was there for the long run. I sure hope so!

  11. Great outfits. You should definitely buy that skirt, Cindy.
Colin and Lauren’s wine “cave” is amazing. I can imagine that they have enjoyed entertaining there.
