Here is Why Milieu is one of the Best Shelter Magazines and More

Happy Sunday! When I got the latest Milieu Mag in my mailbox (mine was late due to the move), I was “gobsmacked” as my friend Debra would say. Here is why (I think) Milieu is one of the best Shelter Magazines. As always, I am joining my pals Mary Ann and Annie for our Sunday favorites.

MILIEU MAGAZINE’S FALL ISSUE

If you aren’t familiar with Milieu, you might be interested to know that the founder and Editor in Chief is famed Houston Designer Pam Pierce. Pam’s designs have graced the magazines of Veranda, Southern Accents, Western Interiors, and more. She went out on a limb and started a magazine when many others failed. She pulled off a designer Showhouse in the middle of the pandemic showcasing the work of many of America’s best designers. Milieu is such a beautifully crafted magazine even the ads are beautiful. However, this month its pages really stopped me in my tracks. Houston designer Carol Glasser’s Montecito vacation home photographed by Simon Browne is featured along with that of Jacquie Lanham, Shannon Bowers, and many more. I think it might be the best issue ever. You can follow Milieu on Instagram here.

WHO WHAT WEAR FALL TRENDS

It is always interesting to read about the fall trends even if 90% of them are not applicable to women our age.

OUTFIT OF THE WEEK

Etsy has so many great Kantha jackets at great prices. I thought this one was particularly fun. The good news is there are eight. I paired the jacket with a chambray shirt from J crew and my favorite ankle booties from Gentle Souls. I have these in the suede as shown here and black. They are super comfortable.

SUMMER FUN

We have been having a blast with little Summer in spite of the heat. It has been well over 105 for days here. Yesterday we spent the afternoon at Avila Beach. Summer had a blast and the weather was perfect.

Milieu has always been one of my favorite magazines. That and Veranda. Oh my! And watermelon margaritas? I’ve been scarfing down watermelon like it’s going to be extinct. Love this recipe! Summer is beautiful. How lucky you both are to be in one another’s lives. xoxox, Brenda

      Hi Brenda

Summer is very precious to us. She is beautiful inside and out and fortunately, she doesn’t know it. Hopefully, it will stay that way! Milieu is wonderful. I love Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles too.

Thought to share I contacted the Etsy shop that sells the jacket showcased in this week’s outfit of the week. Sold as one size fits most, I asked if custom measurements are feasible. They are. Hurray! I’ve requested the jacket be sized up one size with a mid-thigh length and 3/4 sleeves. Unable to tell from the picture if the jacket is straight or A-line cut, I requested the latter. The merchant agreed to customize on all fronts. Thank you for pointing to what is sure to be a fun and comfy jacket and accommodating vender.

I’d never heard of Milieu, but now I definitely want to check it out! Mmmmmm those watermelon receipes sound fantastic! I love everything Mary does over at Life at Bella Terra – thanks for sharing her wonderful blog! So glad you and Summer got to have some beach fun. Hope things cool off a bit for you soon. Thanks for another round of fabulous inspiration!

      Hi Barbara

Milieu is a wonderful magazine. I think you would love it! Summer has been fun! Never a dull moment!

Cindy! I don’t even know about Milieu?!! I’m going to look for it at the airport tomorrow! I still love a beautiful shelter magazine. I love your outfit of the week! I can see you wearing it in that living room!
    Summer is just adorable!

      Hi Annie

Milieu is absolutely fabulous! My two favorite magazines are Milieu and Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles.

  5. Pat says

I have two pairs of the ankle booties, and they are sooo comfortable. Thanks for sharing them. Your granddaughter is beautiful, and I know so much entertainment for the family. I was wondering if you have any opinions on the trending Coastal Grandmother lifestyle decor?

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Pat

Those ankle booties are amazing, aren’t they? I am very limited due to the bunion on one foot! It is funny how the industry gives monikers to particular styles. Many have said I espouse the “coastal grandmother” look, and that Nany Meyers does as well. I certainly love all that Nancy Meyers does.

Each time I buy Milieu I adore it … time to subscribe! 105 … oh my gosh, and I’m whining about our heat (not quite that hot). Avila Beach must have been a refreshing break … I can’t get over how grown up Summer’s gotten. Love those Gentle Sole booties … so ready for fall clothes (and weather). Happy weekend! xo

  7. Kathy Chandler says

Now I can’t wait to get the magazine! Looks like a feast for the eyes. Summer is so darling and I love her little dress!

  8. Wren says

I’ll have to check out Milieu – that’s a great title.
I looked at the fashion predictions and I’m going to be first in line to get the corset look. Ha! Some of the styles are adaptable but even if not, fun to see how outrageous some of the designers get.
I was in Avila yesterday also but for the Symphony Pops Concert. I wonder how far from the beach you had to park? It was sure cooler there than more inland. Summer fun with Summer!

  9. Karen H. says

Your adorable granddaughter is growing so fast! Glad you’re having fun in spite of this awful heatwave. The Milieu magazine looks like it focuses on a mix of rustic country with lots of patina…interesting!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Karen

She is growing up way too fast! Such a wonderful age though. Milieu is a fabulous magazine!

Cindy Love Milieu and Vernada and the new AD is my favorite. Love this jacket and the cute boots. You create the coolest outfits. Hope you have a watermelon margarita in that heat. We are sweltering too. xo Kim

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Kim

It certainly has been hot! I subscribed to AD. I find it hot and cold, but the Nancy Meyers issue encouraged me to resubscribe and give it another chance.

  11. Mary from Life at Bella Terra says

Cindy, I’ve never read Milieu and will get a copy. The photos look stunning. Thank you so much for featuring my watermelon post! You are the best! Your granddaughter is just adorable too.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Mary

I think you would love Milieu and your watermelon recipes all sound delicious!!

  12. Katherine says

    Hi Cindy,
Summer is so adorable, personality plus. Children are so delightful to be around, total innocence and honesty. I bet she brings smiles to your face all the time. Keeps you young at heart.

  13. Evelyn says

Just picked up a copy of Milleu yesterday, I had never heard of it and it’s the first time I have seen it. Beautiful!

We are in the process of building a new home, not the time to do it but here we are, anyway, does anyone have any ideas on where to put the TV besides over the fireplace. It’s open concept and only one wall. I have been looking for an inspiration picture and cannot find one that looks good.

Your granddaughter is lovely and it looks like you enjoy her very much.

  14. Mary Ann Pickett says

Summer just looks like FUN! I need to get that magazine ASAP. I think I bought an old edition at the airport recently.
    That margarita looks amazing.

  15. Cheryl P says

I must say that Milieu and Veranda are my two favorite magazines. I prefer to get them in the mail vs. online subscriptions. I admit and do save them, love to pour over them with a good cup of coffee and relax! Can’t believe how tall Summer is getting! (kiddos grow in summer !)

  16. Janet says

I was also “gobsmacked” by Milieu. Every issue is terrific but this one raised the bar considerably. Shelter magazines are often “ hit or miss,” but not Milieu. Your granddaughter is so darling; she seems to be brimming with fun and personality. Have a wonderful week!

  17. Linda Klinger says

Pam Pierce’s Milieu is the most anxiously awaited item in my snailmailbox. And as a native Houstonian, I am thrilled that Milieus has “hung in there.” Do you have Peter Vitale’s enchanting tome, THE DIVINE HOME? There are seven pages of Carol Glasser’s home in Houston. The book was published in 2008, and I think Carol has moved to an apartment/condo, but with the same sensibilities. I return to the pages in THE DIVINE HOME frequently, oohing and aahing…and changing things around in our home.

  18. Cindy Adams says

Thank you for introducing me to Milieu, that picture above is stunning.
I think Summer has grown a foot since the last pic you posted. A beautiful child, I know grands are great.
Loved your fall piece too, I’m ready!

  19. Karen B. says

I will have to pick up the recent issue of Milieu magazine. I don’t have any magazine subscriptions anymore. That and Veranda are two of my favorites.
Time with grandkids is the best. They always seem to make the days fun! Summer is growing up so quickly (or so it seems). 🙂
The watermelon salad looks delcious, as well as the watermelon margarita.
We are in a heat wave, and it’s made me more than excited for cooler days
    Karen B.
