8 Dreamy Outdoor Spaces to Inspire your Next Project

It is that time of year when I am attempting to spruce up my outdoor space. We are so fortunate that the former owners created such inviting outdoor spaces. All we needed to do was add our own spin. If you are planning an outdoor living space project, or you are just looking for inspiration, let’s take a look at 8 dreamy outdoor spaces to inspire your next project.

I will be doing a post soon on my small updates. In the meantime you might enjoy my post How to Create an Outdoor Space Your Guests will Never Want to Leave, and How to Make the Most of your Patio Space.

The perfect outdoor living space depends on your personal style and how you plan to use it, but there are some general elements that can make it more inviting and functional. In my book there are three simple elements that are important:

Function

By being creative, even in a small outdoor space, you can create an outdoor oasis. Whether you choose gravel, pavers, brick, or you are dealing with what you have, carve out a space for a an outdoor dining space and comfortable seating. If it is hot create some shade with a pergola or umbrellas. Of course if you space is vast you can create a dining area, an outdoor kitchen with grill, an outdoor fireplace, fire pit area and more.

This beautiful fire pit area designed by Frank Ponterio and photographed by Eric Piasecki in House Beautiful on the shores of Lake Michigan couldn’t be more inviting.

M James Design Group created a small oasis on this Houston balcony (photography Douglas Friedman). This small but mighty space has everything you could find in a much larger space. I could live in an apartment with an eden like this.

Comfort

Select your patio furniture and furnishings carefully. You want your outdoor living area to be as comfortable and durable as possible. Blankets and throws can add warmth on a cool evening. Comfortable lounge seating with cushy throw pillows are welcome at the end of a busy day.

This beautiful Serenbe showhouse porch by Serenbe Design Build and photographed by Jeff Herr packs a lot of punch in a small space. The color scheme reflects the natural surroundings rather than competing.

Ambiance

This one is a big one for me I admit. String lights, lanterns, candles or solar lights can create a magical atmosphere in the evening. Plants add color, life, and privacy to your outdoor space. Choose plants that are native to your climate and that require minimal maintenance. The sound of bubbling water can be very relaxing. A small fountain or birdbath can add a touch of tranquility to your space.

  1. Nothing beats a lovely patio in California. You have had some lovely spots. I love our weather But dust happens anywhere. We have covers to help in some areas but I tire over the dust, messy trees and leaf blowers from the gardeners . Any tips or easy maintenance ideas. Thank you for the inspirations….

    1. Hi Cathy

California is dusty in the summer! My husband does the blowing now that he is retired and he gets not blowing it on the furniture! He is slowly realizing that it needs to be blown more often than he thinks and now it is looking much better!

  2. The fire pit with the water view is amazing! So peaceful. I’ll also take the the beautiful stone fireplace and porch area. I, too, had pinned this one. Now just bring me all the beautiful weather for outdoor living. These are so inviting!

  3. Hi Cindy. As a loyal follower of yours, may I make a suggestion about the layout of your posts? I find it much more readable to have a description of a photo immediately following the photo rather than before. I can look at the photo while reading about its content, and that feels much more comfortable to me. That way, I don’t have to go back up to read about what is happening in the photo. Just a thought. Thank you for all of your hard work, I really appreciate your blog and Instagram posts.

        1. And I have been hesitating making the suggestion, as I thought it must be fine with everyone else! 😃 Thank you, Cindy! I realize that’s a big change for you to make. 💖

          1. I am just glad you ladies spoke up!! My friend Brenda suggested it but I was afraid of the backlash. Onward and upward, right?

    1. I’ve always felt the same way as Cathy (above)…description of the photo following the photo definitely feels right to me. Not a criticism, just a suggestion. Love all your posts!

      1. I will do it! It is so funny. I have done it “backwards” so many years, I was afraid to quit!

  4. These spaces are all beautiful. I question the use of white or nearly white fabrics. Even without small children, outdoors involves birds, bugs and dust, all play havoc on whites. We furnished our covered deck with a medium blue fabric and it still looks great after 5 years. I vacuum it and this year used the Bessel upholstery cleaning machine. They look brand new.

    1. Hi Nancy

I have always had white covers or tan and white stripe covers on my outdoor furniture. The beauty of white is it can take a little bleach!
