Now that we are all working from home, Annie, Mary Ann and I thought we should keep it real and show you what we really wear when working from home. How “bad” do you look when you’re working from home? Do you stay in your pajamas all day? Come on be honest. Do you sometimes forget to shower? Or are you one of those who prides yourself on looking your best even at home? Or do you follow the business on top, party on the bottom model? Even before Shelter in Place, I worked a lot from home. I don’t have meetings in my home office because it is too far out. My work attire most days is casual at best. I have to be honest, I might go out and deadhead my roses, or run up and down the stairs several times while taking a break. Here is a peek at what I wear working from home.
I would love to be wearing this and have friends over for dinner in the garden. I am wearing CP Shades lily skirt, and jack shirt contact cpshades for availability. This is a fashion post so I had to wear something a little more interesting.
SHOP THE LOOK

The reality is this. This is my normal workday attire. Here on the Central Coast, it is cool most mornings and my office is not terribly toasty. I start out in this or a version of it. These Target Yoga pants are comfy enough to wear all day, Athleta Speedlight Top ( it covers the bum) or similar, a version of this lightweight down vest from REI (now found on eBay) and tennis shoes. I added the scarf so I wouldn’t look like a total slob. If I am at my desk all day I am wearing my favorite slippers (from my pal Mary Ann).
SHOP THE LOOK (if you dare)
If I decide to garden, this is what happens… Don’t for a minute believe those ads that have people wearing garden aprons, and or a pretty outfit. It is dirty out there people. One needs a practical “tool belt” to stow your clippers, garden tape, and gloves. No pretty apron, if you stoop down you would trip on it. Of course, you need some sort of hat to keep out the sun. P.S I added the cute scarf so I wouldn’t look like a total ( affectionately called garden nerd by my daughter).
GET THE LOOK (I know are you kidding me?)
Today I actually looked half-way respectable. I knew I had to do this fashion post so I spared my usual uniform. I don’t often look like this working from home. This cardigan is super comfortable, gap jeans (comfy and price friendly) and Birdies (the next thing closest to slippers)

The last couple of days it has been warmer, finally. On a good day, I might dress like this. My friend Elizabeth, aka the Contessa gave me these shoes. I LOVE them. You can throw them in the washer. I am wearing my favorite Michael Stars tee and the scarf is from Warmth Company

Are you working from home? If so please share what you wear on an everyday basis. Let’s keep it real.
Mary Ann, Annie and I thought it would be fun to share what working from home really looks like. Mary Ann lives in a city apartment and is now sharing her workspace with her son and husband. Annie lives in Connecticut and is sharing her space with three others. My husband still goes to the office every day for a bit, and we live in the country. I don’t have to share (and no one except maybe the fed ex driver) sees me on a regular basis (dangerous I know).
Pop over and see what Mary Ann and Annie are “wearing to work”. Something tells me it will be a little more interesting than my work attire!
Hang in there everyone. We are all in this together. I asked my daughter if she thought there were benefits of working from home with a toddler. She has a nanny that comes to her home, but she is now pregnant and Jenna is concerned for her health. She and her husband are tag-teaming and taking care of Summer more. She said she has been grateful to be able to spend more time with Summer. Apparently Summer loves video conferencing and interacting with other members of Jenna’s team.
…and midday walks.

I have to struggle to get out of my pajamas by 2PM. It’s embarrassing. But almost everyday if I get dressed it’s tights of jogging pants and a sweatshirt or most likely a hoodie. I mean that’s it. I have not been wearing makeup except for videoing IGTV’s or Book Club. But my husband said i really look good in makeup. He actually said I really clean up well. So when I think about it I now put on makeup kinda maybe.

Super cute. Even your garden outfit!!!!!

Hi Cindy! I too thought Jenna was pregnant so I went back and re-read your post. The nanny is pregnant, not Jenna! Great post too 🙂
Annie says
HI again, Cindy! You look so cute and comfy in your “work from home clothes”. If I don’t start my day without caring for myself first, (doing my hair, light makeup and fun, comfortable outfit) I’m guaranteed to have a miserable day. Thanks for sharing!
Barbara at Mantel and Table says
Ha! You look great! I’m not actually staying home, because I work in a critical industry. So I just keep wearing my regular skirts, sweaters, and heels into the office! 😉 Have fun down there and do some weeding for me! 🙂

It is now Day 40 of Home Cocooning in Tennessee! Remarkably easy, considering the alternative. 8 weeks since my FINAL hair color process for this graying brunette head of hair. The perfect time to transition, it turns out… a truly SILVER proverbial lining 😉 As for comfortable fashion, leggings are a wardrobe must have. Isn’t it wonderful we have athleisure styles to live in? Gardening and decorating are key to sanity while being comfortable in our dressed-down state. I’m a big fan of the Pure Jill and Fit lines at J Jill stores- very comfortable athleisure wear for cocooning or outings. Love your style, Cindy. Your garden is glorious!

Thank you for keeping it ‘normal’ in your posts during this horrific time for our world. I so appreciate your posts and suggestions and had to laugh at your work from home attire versus what you would normally wear.

Hi Holly
The dirty gloves are in the dirty pouch!! Have a great day !!

Every single outfit is adorbs! My “gardening ensemble” is usually a paint-spattered t-shirts, yoga pants and very fashionable dirty green gloves! Guess I should clean it up a bit! I thank you for sharing the inspo (so does my husband!)

You look put together even in your leggings, Cindy. A scarf does wonders!
I walk my dog every morning, then shower, moisturize, and dress in jeans or chinos. My only concession is I don’t wear makeup. I’m spending a lot of time outside in my garden so it’s just sunscreen.
Our greatest asset is our smile and you always have one. Stay well Cindy!
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Joanna
Maybe I better start wearing a scarf on a regular basis. The only problem is the only ones to see it would be Beau and our two cats. I am enjoying the break from makeup as well and I think our skin thanks us! Thanks for weighing in Joanna!

Funny, I am wearing the same the same, black leggings, black long sleeve T and a puffy vest. But I just went to my backyard and pulled on my UGGs as we still have snow on the ground.
Long roots showing and it’s time. Well maybe, partially? I’ll have to wait and see
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Karen
Oh I almost posted a shot of me in my UGG’s as well. I didn’t want to scare everyone off! Whew I am glad I don’t have to worry about the hair anymore….but the nails yikes!!

Elizabeth I love those shoes and of course I love my Byrdies too. You need the UGG slippers. They are linked above. Lauren and Colin got me the black ones for Christmas a few years ago. They are looking a bit worn so thank heavens for my pretty new gray ones!! Oh did I mention they are water reistant. Translation if you wander out into the garden you are safe!!

Although I’m retired and don’t “ work” anymore I can relate to the work at home wardrobe….I call it my retirement look. And now days I’ve been Zooming/video conferencing everything from family visits to neighborhood book clubs and happy hour…. so I do change out of my workout gear and apply makeup to be ready. All pretty casual though. You always look fabulous and rock everything you wear! AND….Congrats on another grandbaby to love. Hope you make it back to Indiana soon. Hugs.
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Mary
Thank you so much for sharing. Your comments are always so insightful. We are not having another grandbaby….at least not that I know of…have a great day and keep sharing. Love your comments.

A lovely romp through what seems like yesteryear. i retired in1995 and gave away my “business clothes” and went to the garden so life has been pretty casual for quite some time. But now, at 70! (how did that happen?) I’m in sweatpants, leggings, or something that looks/feels that comfy. Our weather is still up and down in Kansas. My not very tech savvy husband was on his first Zoom conference with some of his retirees group yesterday and bitched that he had to shave and put on a clean shirt. We are poster children for entropy in action. We have date night once a week. Does that count? That usually means I cook something special and we open two bottles of wine. The table gets dress up. We don’t. Summer looks smashing as always. What a beam of sunshine.
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Patricia
Ha! Men really love the opportunity to not shave and be shabby don’t they?!! Cooking something special and drinking two bottles of wine…a girl after my own heart!

Such a very fun post, Cindy. Summer of course was the star but I must say, you make staying at home look so fantastic. Your best accessory, your wonderful smile.
Congratulations of the new grand baby to come. Truly the best news!!

Hi Deb
Yikes no suliminal message there. No baby coming that I know of. Summer loves to push her “baby” in the stroller we just bought her. Thanks for the kind words friend. Love seeing the architecture in NOLA!

I wear gym clothes every day. The only difference now is I may wear the same outfit 2 days in a row and no makeup except when I Zoom call with my Bible study girlfriends on Monday nights. My thoughts about life and clothes and moving forward has totally changed since this odyssey began. xoxox, Brenda
Cindy Hattersley says
Brenda you said it all. So many things seem so trivial now don’t they? I wear gym clothes nearly every day as well. Comfort is key. I figure as long as we look tidy and clean we are good!

I just love your hair! I have thick, course, wavy hair that looks best short. I’ve been coloring it close to my natural dark brown shade for at least 25 years, and this pandemic may be the impetus to let it go natural. I’ve been getting root touch ups about every 3.5 weeks, and now that It’s five weeks since my last appointment, the gray is very visible. I hope I have the guts to stay the course once I have access to my stylist again!
And I also love your comfy stay-at-home looks and your honesty about how you really dress! I look forward to reading each of your posts.
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Barb
I actually have thick coarse semi wavy hair as well. I began getting keratin treatments and tried wearing it longer. Not sure if it is a good thing or not? I am so glad I went natural but it is such a personal choice. My hair is whiter than my mom’s was when she died at 86…
Barb says
Wow, I would have never thought that you have thick, wavy hair! Thanks for the keratin tip. My mom, at 89, has beautiful white hair. I hope I’m so lucky!

I’m in MN & still having regular snowy days & the house drops to 65° during the day. I can be asked to a meeting at anytime, so I dress in things that will look fine if I am seen full length. What I am having trouble doing is makeup. I put my moisturizer on, but the rest isn’t happening often. Today is dark grey pants, white v-neck with 3/4 sleeves, and a cozy wrap with pockets! I should probably add earring or a necklace?
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Claire
It sounds like you look stylish all the time. I know what you mean about the makeup. It is nice to give our skin a break isn’t it? I always make sure I wear blush and lipstick everything else sometimes go South! Thanks for weighing in!

We definitely had to clean our acts up didn’t we? Clean office what could possibly be next?!!
Cathy says
Cindy, your yard work outfit is swankier than mine! Mine consists of Dickie carpenter pants, a heavy long sleeved cotton tee, and short or tall Muck boots, depending on the weather!😜
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Cathy
Ha! I had to at least throw on some makeup. I wear head to toe black to keep out the sun. It just doesn’t do pretty things at my age!
Elizabeth says
Hello Cindy,
I have been on many calls lately and I have seen all manner of dress, these are challenging times and people have a lot to worry about. For some people I think it is a struggle just to get to the meeting.
I have worked from home most of my life so my “uniform” is just like yours, yoga pants, comfy shirt and a sweater. I will have to jazz it up with a scarf from now on. I love that idea!
I would not worry too much about your posts, you always post beautiful and entertaining things and I think we all enjoy them.
Thank you for sharing, have a beautiful day.
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Elizabeth
Thank you so much for sharing “what you really wear” and your kind comments. I am always inspired by your baking. Most of my old friends from high school and college would laugh. I was a baker back in the day. I love to cook but I gave up baking years ago. I can resist sweets but give me a great pasta, or fresh baked bread and I am in trouble!!
