Timeless Longer Length Wool Coat
In cold weather, everyone needs a long winter coat in a classic style that can be worn to work, out to dinner or an event. Go for wool and not a blend if you can afford it. The best wool coats you will wear for years. If it has some thermal insulation all the better.

I have a J Crew coat (the lady coat that no longer fits) that I have worn for years. It is finally no longer available and too small. If I were in the market for a long wool coat here are some of my faves in all price ranges. I purchased a Steve Maddon Coat last year that is a blend.

It has a good look, but I wish I had spent the extra $$ to buy an all wool coat on eBay or on sale. Maybe next year!

Practical Puffer Coat or Jacket

When inclement weather, with freezing cold temperatures arrives, a puffer coat or jacket provides extra warmth. Many are water resistant, with down or synthetic insulation, two-way zippers extra warmth during perhaps a removable hood. Long time favorites include Patagonia, and the North Face, but they can be found everywhere now at affordable prices. Quince has some really great options (and prices) here. Their quality is always dependable.

Warmer Days Casual Stylish Errand Coat
You know I love a great quilted jacket. They make a good coat for everyday wear, here in California. They are lighter weight which works most of the winter here. In frigid temperatures they are more suited for a lighter weight underlayer.
The first jacket is from Steve Madden several years ago, the second was from H&M. The third photo is one of my new obsessions vintage liner jackets. I have a black one and this great blue one. You can find them on Etsy here.
Leather Jacket or Coat
Leather jackets can be worn in the fall and Spring and year round in warmer climates. They are classic, fun, and can add a bit of edge to your look.

I have had my leather jackets for years. Quince has a leather topper just like mine and many other options here.

Faux Fur Coats

I have a couple faux fur coats for colder weather that are short. I wouldn’t mind snagging a longer version faux fur coat for colder weather. They are a good choice for a cozy coat that has more of a laid back look. Below are a few I have my eye on,

Wish I could wear wool but it makes me itch like crazy! Even when I wear over turtlenecks . I usually end up with down alternative or fleece to keep my skin happy.
Hi Debbie
Does cashmere bother you as well? My husband is very sensitive to wool as well but can wear cashmere.
Hi Cindy
Your winter coat selection was informative. Curious about the bottom right white faux fur jacket you were wearing. It looked warm & cozy. Where did you find it? Thanks for sharing all your topics , love them all!
Deborah
Hi Deborah
That coat came from IBU Movement several years ago and is no longer available. Wolf and Badger does have a similar one here https://rstyle.me/+7DOr1bTUPo0Dmca0O3h-Yg
Thanks for all the options you’ve shared. My long wool coat that I bought over 30 years ago is still in style and works perfectly. I need an in-between inch kind of coat now it’s not a puffer and not a quilted jacket. I like that guy can kind of pre-shop with this post. Have a good day.
I love coats and this winter we’ve actually needed them here (So. Cal.).
I love some of the coats you’ve shared. Thank you. 😊

Those liner coats are interesting. I had a nice brown one but there was no way to close it and that just seemed way too impractical for cold weather. Also, the woman in the white puffer coat with SANDALS???
Thanks for your posts & happy new year.
Cindy I just typed a huge comment and suddenly the page reloaded. Darn. Well, about to say how very much I love you in this camel coat. Also agree about all wool, but this is lovely.
I think I need one of those sherpa coats. I adore the RL grey and the green Ugg! Oh Cindy here I go… Well this was fun. I forgot about the coat in the photo you shared! Love doing this with you. That was ncie of you sharing all these cute gals.

Hi Cindy,
Thank you for the post. I have been looking at coats in the sales for a while now as I am going to NYC in February and often go to England to see family, and this afternoon I bought a gorgeous classic all wool navy coat from Hobbs USA website. Bloomingdales also has Hobbs but I find better prices on the brand website and they offer petite sizes which is a win.Another brand I love and keep an eye on is Harris Wharf London, gorgeous saturated colors but pricey, but coats that last a lifetime and make a statement. I like that at 61!
Love your choices!! Keep well Cindy.
This is a great collection of coats. Personally, I love nothing more than a beautifully tailored all-wool coat. It is disappointing how many brands have gone to wool blends. And, they just don’t look, feel, or hold up as well as all-wool. I have a couple Fleurette coats from Nordstrom that I have had for years – and still wear frequently. Also, I love a pop of color for a coat – like to brighten things up when it is gray out (although we haven’t seen a lot of gray here on the Central Coast this year.)
Hi Barbara
You are absolutely right about so many coats being blends, even very expensive ones. I agree it is disappointing. I am awfully tempted by a red coat for a pop of color!
You always have the best check list. I have at least of one of each of the styles you highlight but one that I bought when I was in high school and still wear, my leopard print coat. It has served me well for a very long time and still on the money for style. Thank you!
Hi Diane
I think it is important when buying a wool coat to stick with a classic style that you can wear forever as long as it fits!
I sit here in shorts and a polo, debating which beach to swim at today as I check out the winter coats. Love the quilts and puffas. But with climate change, my beautiful, tailored, full-length, softest oatmeal overcoat has languished in my wardrobe for many years.
I find Uniqlo the best place to go for outer wear at affordable prices and with great styling, sizing and quality. I did buy a beautiful second hand Tommy Hilfiger nude-pink ski jacket with stylish nipped waist and fur-lined hood on e-bay a few years ago. Have worn it once in a smidge of snow that we had to drive two hours to get to. Like I said – climate change.
Scout looks lovely. My word, he’s grown! We get a new pup on Friday after the passing of our much loved Terrier. Another Jack Russell. It will fill a heart-shaped void.
I’m wondering about the bottom-left picture in the Faux Fur header – where was that captured from? The woman has fabulous hair… Thanks!
