Hi Everyone! Today Mary Ann, Annie, and I are joining some of our blogging friends and we are sharing our favorite coats of the season. It rarely gets cold enough to wear a proper winter coat here on the Central Coast. Normally a jacket and or a sweater will suffice. Since Annie thought it would be a good idea to do a post on coats I dug mine out of the mothballs. Let’s take a look at Flattering Coats for Women over 50.
FLATTERING COATS FOR WOMEN OVER 50
When buying a winter coat I would choose something timeless. Nearly every coat I own is black. If I were buying a new one I might choose something in Camel. I love the pop of color styles that are popular this year. I might be tempted if we had the weather to enjoy one.
The Leather Topcoat
This leather topcoat is from the Banana Republic at least 10 years ago, probably more like 15. For fun, I added a vintage Ralph Lauren quilted vest underneath that I found on Ebay. I wear a lot of vests. My favorites are those that are long enough to cover the bum. I am wearing it with the mesh leopard turtleneck from Ganni that I found on sale for our fall fashion post here.
The J Crew Lady Coat
I think J Crew makes coats of very high quality for a great price point. This coat is also at least 10-15 years old and is still in style. Their lady coat hasn’t changed much over the years. The current version is very similar to this one. I am wearing it with faux suede leggings from Anthro a couple of years ago, the ganni mesh turtleneck, and my trusty comfy velvet birdies.
The Fun Coat
This darling Peruvian Connection Logan Velveteen Duster was a gift from my friends at PC. It would be great with a lightweight turtleneck sweater as well. Like all of their items, it is made beautifully and fits like a dream. I am wearing a size 6. Here, I am wearing it with gray jeans, and a gray denim shirt with a vintage celluloid brooch.
I am sorry my pictures are so fuzzy. The weather was not cooperating either day that I photographed. Here I added a scarf that I inherited from my sister, my concho belt (25 years old) a native American pin, and don lucas earrings. If you have a waist accentuate it. Don’t be afraid to add a scarf in an unlikely way. You can find similar concho belts on ebay here, and here
The Classic Leather Jacket
Banana Republic has had some great leather jackets over the years. I purchased this one as vintage on Ebay a few years ago. I linked a similar one below. I am wearing it with my CP Shades Lily Skirt,
The Long Puffer Vest
Raise your hand if you love these puffer vests that cover everything! Here I am wearing my favorite j crew sweater, velvet leggings from our last post, and my favorite bed stu boots. My son thinks I look like the pillsbury dough boy in this color, but I love it. It is still available and comes in many other colors.
The J Crew Funnel Neck Coat
Lastly another great J crew coat that is still available. They have modified it a bit but not much. This is my favorite coat. I love the length and the weight is perfect for the few days that I need it in the winter. I am wearing it with the velvet leggings, cozy favorite j crew sweater, bed stu manchester boots, and a leopard scarf.

Love all these coats and the way you style them! You look amazing in all of them. I think my favorite is the black coat and that hat – looks like it was made for you. Thanks to you and all the ladies for all the great styling ideas.

Hi Barb
Thank you so much. That was an inexpensive hat I picked up on a wine tasting trip to Santa Ynez a couple of years ago. I like hats for bad hair days. Which happen to be most days!!

Hi Cindy,
You ALWAYS look so chic! I’d love to see your entire wardrobe, You have some really great pieces. I can tell you shop carefully and look for quality. And, you know your style.
I love the buttery leather jacket with the CP Shades skirts, such a good look! And that black coat is perfect. Don’t you love wearing coats? I know it doesn’t really get that cold around here very often, most of the time I wind up taking the coat off and carrying it. But I truly enjoy getting bundled up and walking for miles in a fabulous city, exploring. Hope to do that again sometime…
Happy Thanksgiving Cindy!
XO Heidi

Hi Heidi
I miss wearing coats too. If you search ebay you can probably find that jacket. I think I paid less than $50 for it a couple of years ago. Some of their older leather items were really nice. Hopefully, we can all get together again next year!

Cindy, you look so chic in all of your outfits and I love how you’ve styled them.
Cindy Hattersley says
Hi Gail
I certainly have never considered myself very chic but you ladies sure challenge me to do better!

Ciao Cindy mi sono già espressa su Instagram ma aggiungo che in assoluto preferisco l’ultimo insieme total black.
Cindy Hattersley says
I really like a column of black to Dora. I know I need to wear more color as it is more flattering as we age. Trying to inch outside the box!

Cindy I love all your looks. Clearly your closet has some seriously stylish pieces. I love how you change everything up. Your cool pieces like those boots, and your brooches really are amazing. I need more cool accessories! The puffer vest is a standout and I don’t agree with your son. I have always love it. The two J. Crew coats are beauties also! The new website is beautiful! Thankful to do this with you all. xo Kim

Hi Kim
We always love having you! I can’t believe that polka dot Target coat. It would not look good on me or I would snatch it up. I read about that Amazon coat on Vicki Archer’s post and thought it looked fabulous! It would be too hot for my climate or I would give it a try!

Francesca that jacket is on sale at Peruvian Connection right now. I just love that jacket. It is so versitile. You won’t be disappointed should you decide to buy. A very flattering style.

You always look fabulous, Cindy!
So much inspiration here, “whether” a new coat is in order or restyling an gently worn favorite!
Well done!

You look so amazing in all your coats!! I love that puffer vest and the velvet one is to die for!!
Cindy Hattersley says
Thanks pal! You don’t think I look like the Pillsbury Dough Boy?
Cindy Hattersley says
That velvet number is a good one. One of my italian readers said it looks like a rennaisance painting. It really does have that feel!
Karen Sink says
I love these outfits! Especially anything with animal prints. But all of these except the floral you could find a close resemblance in my closet. That last one, wow! looks fabulous on you. You have always had great taste, even in high school.

Cindy! You have the most amazing style! The leather top coat layered with a red quilted vest and a leopard turtleneck looks amazing together, but so unexpected. I love all of your looks and how they have a very collected feel….just like your home, you have the most creative and beautiful ways to put things together!
