10 Fresh Ways to Style Black and White After 50

The combination of black and white is both the easiest and most timeless color pairing in fashion. It can be elegant,  interesting,  casual, or quirky. I admit to having a soft spot for this color combination.  Jennifer, Sarah, and I covered this topic a few years ago and I think it is time to revisit it. Are you in need of some inspiration for black-and-white outfits? Let’s chat about 10 Fresh Ways to Style Black and White After 50.

10 Fresh Ways to Style Black and White After 50

Three women come to mind that have rocked the black-and-white look. Diane Keaton, Meg Ryan and Jackie Kennedy have all been enthusiasts. Many of my posts from the past feature black and white.  Why do we love it? It’s a staple in most of our closets. It transcends seasons and trends, and it always looks classic and sophisticated.  Let’s face it, part of its charm is it’s versatility.

Black Linen Wide-Leg Pants With A White Oversized Linen Top

I am wearing my favorite Eileen Fisher linen pants with a top that I purchased at the Fabric Merchant in Santa Ynez, I linked similar tops in the link below the photo. White Relaxed Crop Linen Pants With A Black 3/4 Sleeve Tee + Black Crochet Tote

These J Jill Linen pants are really flattering. Sometimes I have good luck with J Jill sometimes not so much but these pants are winners. I will show a colorful version next week in my post with Jennifer. I’m wearing a 3/4 sleeve tee, but you could swap it for a black tank. In an effort to feature price friendly options, I am also featuring a Target hat and bag with my fave Olukai flip flops. If you can’t afford one of the more expensive hats shop for them used on eBay. Hats like this won’t last long, so you need to think of CPW (cost per wear). The macrame bag I think will last. They both have a great look. If that is what you can afford go for it.

This is one of my favorite ways to wear black and white. It’s a great option for women over 50 who don’t like to show a lot of skin. White Linen Maxi Shirtdress With A Black Belt

I get a lot of questions about maxi dresses and height. I do find them challenging. When I spotted this one at Anthro, I thought it might work. Why? The belt is removable or movable (I am long-waisted). I switched out the self belt for a belt I already own, but I have linked a great one with a similar look below.

You can see all of the Eileen Fisher pieces featured above and more in my post How to Create Multiple Outfits From a Capsule Wardrobe

I wrote a post back in 2017 about the wisdom of black and white and the relationship between fashion and interiors HERE.

I love color but I have a lot of black and white in my wardrobe.  I love the combination because it is always crisp, classic and simple.  Fashion peeps and designers all agree that it’s all in the styling when it comes to making a black and white outfit work. Even this color combo can be fun if you amp up your accessories.

It can grab your attention. It can affect your mood. It can overpower you. “Why black and white? Because color can be too demanding.” – Diane Keaton

You might also enjoy reading The History of Black and White in Fashion here.or my post on the wisdom of black and white and how it applies to interiors here.

How do you feel about black and white?  Does a colorless outfit leave you feeling blah, or has a black-and-white palette always been a part of your personal style? You can always add a pop of color (red, fucshia, chartreuse, or orange) if neutral colors are not your jam. Thank you for reading 10 Fresh Ways to Style Black and White After 50.

I absolutely love your black and white combinations! Thank you for the inspiration! I have one question about the Michael Stars top. It says that because it is no longer OS, I should order a size larger than usual. Do you think this is true or do you order your usual size?

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Carollee

I always order a small but I am overweight and think I will try a medium next time!

  2. Wren says

You are so creative to come up with all of these outfits. I can’t imagine how much time it takes you so thank you for the inspiration! Also, I think the 2 items from Target are pretty competitive with the more expensive. The hat looks great on you and the bag is also a nice alternative.

  3. Ann says

I love black and white. Those colors make it easy to look chic. What’s easier than a pair of white jeans and a black T-shirt and then we can look like Jackie Onasis! A pop of color is easy too if someone prefers that. With your last photo of the white dress you could have a red belt or red shoes. Or the patterned assessories that you have shown. Thanks for this blog.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Ann

I agree with you totally. I find the older I get the less complicated pairings I am willing to make.

  4. Nancy M. says

I love this post Cindy and you look so chic in every single outfit! You wear it well. I can see why you favor black and white.
I do not normally gravitate to black and white, but I do like it. I’m more of a bright colors girl,
When I do wear neutrals, I like to add a pop of color as you suggest or wear something that cuts the “plain ness” of it, like that beautiful Colombian bag that you featured in the post, which I just bought! I can’t wait to get it and I can already picture my neutral outfits with it.
Your post gave such great suggestions. Thanks Cindy!

    • Kelly says

      Hi Cindy,
I just love the CP Shades skirt and Michael Stars top. It looks fantastic on you! I have a question…is it that wrinkly? On you it looks so flowing, but on the site it looks sooo wrinkled. I get that it’s linen, but wow. Do you wear it wrinkled? I really love the looks of the “Tanya” CP Shades skirt. Do you have any comment about that style? I think it might work better for me..
      Thanks!

      • Cindy Hattersley says

        HI Kwlly

I have never tried any other skirts of their’s other than the Fanny. For my physique I need a style that goes in at the waist and flares out. I have a small waist and big hips. The black CP Shades skirt is the silk. I prefer the linen to be honest. I do not iron them but pull and yank them while wet. Mine are a little less wrinkly than those in the picture. I would contact CP they are very helpful. fYI they have never given me a dime or even a skirt. It is just a great product.

        • Kelly says

They need to give you a skirt , at the very least!! Thank you for your reply. I’ll reach out to them. I’ll be sure to mention where I saw the skirt!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Nancy

I love color too..Jennifer and I are going there next week. I think if you don’t want to spend a pile of money and want to be fashionable, black and white can be your best friend.

  5. Deb says

Thank you for this post! I struggle to put together a classic, stylish look but while I may not be able to carry off certain clothing that you recommend, I am more confident trying them on and get pleasantly surprised more than not.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Deb

I am so glad to hear that..maybe you will surprise yourselfl. I am not all that stylish I am learning from you all.

  6. Laurie L Cordeniz says

Hi Cindy. Another amazing post! I am ever so grateful for your fashion blog and open it first with great anticipation and you never fail to deliver!!! You have probably shared your sunglass sources before but I love the ones you are wearing in this post – the tortoise ones especially but would appreciate all sources when you have a chance. Thanks again Cindy for all the time and effort you put into this post.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Laurie

Sunglass post coming up. My glasses are prescription, so I am working on it

      • Laurie L Cordeniz says

Thanks Cindy! I have prescription glasses as well. I have had a pair of Oliver Peoples which I put prescription lenses in and have worn for 5 years so time for a change I think! I look forward to your post!

  7. vaughan says

Thank you. Lots of great ideas! so many great posts.
I might have missed it, but have you talked about toenail polish colors?
I see a lot of white this year and notice that’s what you are using.
I am basically a navy blue, almost black polish girl. (..nothing on my hands because of yard work.)
A bit nervous to try the white, I think it really stands out. But then maybe navy/black does too.
    ??

  8. Judy says

I love your style, but I’m curious as to how tall you are. I’m only 5’2″ and feel some of the longer skirts and wider leg cropped pants would make me look even shorter.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Judy

Thank you for reminding me. I added it in the text, but I am 5’4. I am very long waisted with short legs. If you have any other questions please email me. I am happy to answer. Do you follow my friend Mary Ann from Classic Casual Home? She is starting to do more fashion and she is your height or shorter.

  9. Gail says

I adore black and white, always so classic and fabulous., just can’t go wrong! You look amazing in all these b and w outfits but then you would look fab in a paper sack!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Gail

I love black and white too. I only look good in the right light trust me. A photo of me in bright light would send you running!!

  10. Cindylou says

Love black and white! I tried to open the link for the post on the relationship between fashion and home decor. Can you repost it? Thanks.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Cindy Lou
I fixed the link thanks for the heads up! One for team black and white!

    • Pat says

I too love black and white. However, I was a little surprised by your comment on the Target bag. If that is what you can afford…..sounded a little snobbish. While I appreciate your choosing of Target, the comment wasn’t well received. Women of all social economical backgrounds love fashion.

      • Cindy Hattersley says

        Hi Pat

Thank you I rephrased that. I have shopped eBay, Etsy, and vintage my entire life. I have purchased very little at full retail. I have recently thought a lot about fast fashion and costs per wear. That is why I often link to eBay and Etsy. I think for the most part you can find more bang for your buck there. It does take searching, which I know can be a pain. I will always try to offer more price friendly options when I find them. Next week in my post with Jennifer, I think (hope) I found some good options.

  11. Mumbai says

Hi from Spain….when I read b/w my first notion was Diane Keaton and you didn’t forget to mention D.K.
b/w a never ending fashion story over centuries I guess. It works for any age and occasion.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Mumbai

DK really knows how to rock black and white doesn’t she? Love her style!!

  12. Karen B. says

    Hi Cindy,
Honestly, you look like a model in all of your fashion shots. Way to go. You find the best items. I love black and white although this spring I started buying a bit more color. Maybe I wanted to celebrate seeing the finish line on this Covid ordeal. In any event. I always look forward to your fashion posts since I get ideas for my own outfits.
    xo,
    Karen

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Karen

I am really aiming for more color both in my home and closet as well. I do think it is a covid thing. I do always love black and white. I never wore white until I let my hair go gray. I never thought it worked. It seems to now.

  13. caroline walker says

Yesterday I wore an open weave black and white top with black trousers. Maybe because it was hot here in L.A. I felt a splash of color was needed. My hot pink straw bag and hot pink scarf seemed to be the answer. I received numerous compliments so it must have worked!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Caroline

I love that adding a pop of color to black and white to keep it from being to boring. I find that I wear less accessories and jewelry in the summer. Life is just more casual. What a great way to amp up your black and white without wearing anything too heavy!!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Caroline

That sounds fabulous! No wonder you received so many compliments!

  14. Sandra Sallin says

I love black and white. I find that with grey hair and age you have to be careful with color. Black and white is stunning. Listen you’ve got style lady. You know how to put stuff together. Whether it’s clothes, gardens or interiors. You’ve got it together. If you looked in my closet it would mainly be black and white. Although I must admit I’m not that fond of black next to my face. I think it’s tad harsh. I do like navy blue though.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Sandra

I agree about the black against the face at our age, can be tricky!! My closet is slowly being infused with more color. I cannot wear navy, although I sure love it on others.

  15. Juliet says

Cindy, you’re right up there with Jackie, Meg and Diane … fabulous! That jacket you wore yesterday … amazing! And, you look so gorgeous with sweet Summer. It was incredibly hot yesterday, but you’re as cool as a cucumber … if cucumbers came in black and white! xo

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Juliet

Well I started out with the jacket on (we live in Salinas now), but stripped down to linen within minutes of getting to Walnut Creek.

  16. Francesca B. says

Wonderful looks thank you Cindy and the one of you and Summer is just darling !! Love the spotted black and white sandals too! Happy week 🙂

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Francesca

Those sandals are reasonably priced and comfortable! A combination that is hard to come by these days!!

  17. Heidi says

    Hi Cindy,
Black and white forever! My favorite combo, although I do wear color too. B&W is just so easy, and you can jazz things up with the accessories like you said, so it’s a perfect combo for travel.
Glad you got to spend time with your favorite kiddo! She’s a doll.
    Xo Heidi

  18. Sarah says

As a “spring” my black and white subs are navy and ivory. I do wear black and white pants, and on the rare occasion when I wear a black or white top I try to include a bright scarf or piece of jewelry next to my face. I’ll be interested to learn how that may change when my hair fully turns gray; I read a lot of conflicting opinions about whether or not that will affect my skin tone and the colors I can wear well. I appreciate how versatile black and white are on those who can pull it off, as you certainly do. Great post!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Sarah

I definitely wear colors that I couldn’t before my hair was gray, like white for instance. I don’t necessarily follow any “rules”. I just try to follow my instincts (which can go awry on occasion)

  19. Lorna says

I do like black and white as it is timeless but, like our Contessa, I am also partial to q lot of colour. I like the way you style your black and white outfits.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Lorna

Elizabeth’s comment made me laugh out loud. She wouldn’t be caught dead in black and white!

  20. Janet Arden says

Love this! Black & white is my go-to. After harming and hawing for months, I finally bought that white shirt from Artful Home. It’s awesome! Accessorizes beautifully or stands on its own.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Janet

I know that shirt is a big purchase, but I know you will not regret it. It is like a pair of good jeans, a staple you will never regret. I use oxy clean on it every once in awhile and it responds beautifully. It doesn’t seem to yellow like many of my other less expensive white shirts.

  21. Gayle Miller says

Cindy, I think that the huge contrast between black and white is very energizing. There is no greater contrast. I like to wear that combo, but it is probably not my most flattering look, since I am short and lower contrast is usually more flattering. But sometimes I just throw caution to the wind.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Gayle

Sometimes we have to just listen to our heart when it comes to clothes and wear what makes us feel good. I totally agree.

  22. Liana says

I love black and white , it gives us great backdrop for accessorizing and it’s always a safe choice, this color combination looks marvelous on you, and I confess having copied your oversized white shirt &leggings look.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Liana

I am so glad you like the oversized shirt and legging look. I know leggings are supposedly “out” who cares!! I love them with an oversized shirt!

  23. Cathy says

You look great in black & white but I can’t pull it off because, as an “autumn,” I need warm colors.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Cathy

I was “diagnosed” an Autumn many years ago and could never wear dead white until my hair went gray. Totally know what you are saying!

  24. char says

Black and white for me forever for all the reasons you mention. I like seeing others
in those bright colors but I can’t do it…I break out in hives at the thought of all
that bright color on me!! 😂 Good thing I can wear black and white well! Great post!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Char

I feel the same way about pattern as you do about color! I totally understand!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Char

I responded to your comment earlier I apologize but it disappeared! I always feel safe and comfortable in black and white. It never dissapoints!

  25. Marilynn says

I love black and white but I can’t say it’s a good color for my skin tone. 🙁

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Marilyn

You know it’s funny I never wore black and white until my hair was gray (or white I should say). I have olive skin and I always wore off white. Now I find white can really light up my face and take the focus off the wrinkles

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Marilyn

As Sandra said we have to be careful with black close to our face!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

Ha!! I knew what your comment was going to be. Color is your personality. We would be so disappointed to see you in black and white!!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Eliz

I knew just what your answer would be. I don’t think I have ever seen you in black and white and doubt I ever will. Your personality screams for color!!

  26. Nancy says

I’m inspired to wear black and white tomorrow! Love it. Posts like this are great for those of us who have the pieces, but are challenged on how to put things together…even in black and white. Thank you! I love the simple white jeans with a black tee the best. It really looks classy and it’s so easy. There is so much color in my closet, which I enjoy. I think though, with all that “noise,” I forget about black and white simplicity.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Nancy

I am really trying to inject more color in my closet since covid, but I do love black and white in summer as well. I love white jeans and a black tee as well. You just can’t beat it!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Nancy

These posts do exactly the same for me ironically. They force me to be more creative with my looks!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Margaretanne

I think there will always be a stron “team” for black and white. It is classic, simple and EASY!!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Margaretanne

I am glad to hear you are team black and white! Thanks for weighing in!

  27. Cindy Adams says

I can wear some white if I put some color close to my face. I am an autumn season, I believe in the seasons and can see how the dark circles come out around my eyes with black, then there is changing makeup to try to brighten myself up and it all is a mess.

I have envied gals who can wear b and l, great for travel although when I have on black pants every piece of lint in the room clings to me.

Thankfully we all can have a look of our own, makes life interesting.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Cindy

Good point about black and white for travel. I am so glad you mentioned it. I try to stick to black and white when I travel (or when I did), it makes it so much easier not to overpack!

  28. Diana Amato says

Black and white has always been a staple in my wardrobe choice. It functions and morphs easily between casual to stunningly beautiful. For me, it also brings an energy with it. Something of strength and confidence!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Diana

I love black and white too, although I am trying to add more color as well. I feel like it never dissapoints!

  29. Rosemary Smith says

I wear black and white often, definitely my taste. All of the featured outfits are gorgeous and inspiring and your granddaughter is adorable!

  30. Jennifer says

Black and white looks so striking on you. It compliments your hair beautifully. The photo of you and Summer is just precious. She’s darling. So the verdict is, black and white never looks boring on you! This was fun and eye opening to find just how often I wear the combo.

  31. Gray says

I wear tons of black and white, but also prefer more color around my face. Black accentuates my dark circles and really washes me out.

  32. Cheryl P says

Love the black and white combo, always and forever. You can accessorize with either silver or gold and looks fantastic!

  33. Pam says

I prefer more color. Black around my face really washes me out and makes me look 10 years older.

  34. Susan Hijazi says

I really love a lot of the clothes you show
But dear goddess I’d have to take out a loan in order to buy them all.
    Wow

    • Shelley says

You are simply stunning. My favorite blog ever.
I love black and white..I can’t tell you how often I run back to the bedroom and change into black leggings and a great white top right before we go out, ditching whatever new combo I was intending to wear.

      Thank you!

  35. SarahlondonstylE says

Wow! Thank pic of you and Summer! Hopefully It’s going straight into a frame 💕 and gosh, you look so good in this colour combo. I especially like it when your top is white and your bottom half black. Gorgeous! And it works so well with your stunning silver locks! Thanks for inviting me to join you this month 🙏🏻
