Polo House on Instagram

Many of you may have followed Alison’s wonderful blog The Polo House. She is no longer blogging but you can enjoy snippets of her wonderful home here on Instagram.
Simple Fresh Weeknight Land & Sea Dinner

We are lucky to have a wonderful seafood market Pier 46 just minutes from our house. Last night Steve picked up Sole and we had a simple meal of sole meuniere, fresh sweet corn, and grilled asparagus. I use Ina Garten’s recipe for the sole meuniere. The only addition is a splash of dry white wine and 1/8 cup of roasted almonds at the end. For the grilled asparagus we dredge it with our homegrown lemon olive oil, a small clove of garlic and salt and pepper, then toss on the grill.
She Did it For the Love of Dogs
Do you subscribe or read Ageist? They constantly have inspiring content for those of us “at a certain age”
I thought you might enjoy this article She Did it For the Dogs. from a 65 year old animal welfare advocate speaking up for dogs in puppy mills.

Speaking of dogs, Scout is getting huge! As you can see he is outgrowing his bed. Steve found these beds at TJ Maxx. They have served us well as he hasn’t been able to destroy them. I am on the hunt for something new any suggestions? Scout loves the beach and Steve has been taking him to the dog park. Apparently he prefers playing with smaller dogs.
Outfit of the Week
It is difficult to think of wearing boots and sweaters anytime soon, as our weather is still in the 90’s. On Tuesday we will talk about how to transition your summer wardrobe to fall. I spotted this great kimono sweater on sale at All Saints.

I think this kimono sweater (on sale) would be great as a coverup here, with an Athleta swimsuit on sale, machete accessories, a great rag and bone hat also on sale, and my new favorite flip flops from Fitflop. They are less expensive than my former olukai faves, with more support. A win win!

Here I styled the sweater with a leopard t-neck from H&M, great pants from Frank and Eileen (not inexpensive), my favorite booties (still on sale at Nordstrom), and a great bag from Rag and Bone from Nordstrom Rack

AARP Five Vitamins You can Overdose on
Do you ever feel conflicted about what supplements you should and should not be taking? I found this article from AARP interesting.
That’s it from my desk this week. I hope you enjoyed Traditional Style, Dogs & More Fun Await your Approval. I would love to hear what you would like to see more of here on my Sunday Faves. If you missed any of my previous Sunday faves you can catch up here. Now let’s pop over and visit Mary Ann and Annie for their favorites.

Late to the game here, but I highly recommend Orvis dog beds. We’ve had three labs and the beds are quality made, easy to take the covers off for cleaning , and come in a variety of styles and colors. Love seeing updates and photos of Scout!
Hi CK
I had them for years with our other labs. We gave the last one to my daughter when Beau passed…or did she steal it? Just kidding! I am going to order one today!!
Vitamins and supplements are scary to me. Snythectic ….I’m 67yo and never took any. I think you need to eat balanced healthy foods. But I’m not a Doctor so I might be thinking wrong. So far I’m healthy. Please adopt animals if possible. AND….don’t get me started on puppy mills! I hope people report anyone being cruel to animals!! It’s like being raped several times a year….
Scout is so precious. He’s growing into his own and looks sadly squeezing into his comfy bed. My Max has a Brentwood Home Runyon Orthopedic bed he’s been sleeping on for the past 8 years. He is picky and just loves this one. The cover is removable, washable and replaceable. Max is a digger and has yet to destroy the cover. In winter I place a New Zealand sheepskin in his bed and he digs in and looks so comfy. These beds come in a variety of sizes that I’m sure will accommodate Scout’s growth spurts. Pricey, yes, but so worth the investment as they last for what seems a lifetime. And no, I am not a promoter of Brentwood Home products nor receive any compensation. Just appreciate how the quality stands the test of time. Here is the link: https://www.brentwoodhome.com/products/runyon-deluxe-orthopedic-pet-bed. A 10% off sale is taking place. Cheers 🙂
Great post – I’ve made Ina’s Sole Meunière and super easy and delish! I’ll try it with the wine next time. Pretty outfits, and great article from Ageist. When we decided a pup was in our future (3 years ago) No one would give me a rescue. While Its comforting to know that rescues are doing their job in vetting thoroughly (including a application that took almost 3 hours to complete for me and my husband – and had to include references) it was frustrating to be rejected and not able to help out a rescue. We didn’t have a fenced in yard was primary reason. So we adopted thru a reputable breeder (and we are thrilled) (Note – our Buddy has been going on 1-3 mile walks daily so the fenced in yard was never really an issue).
Have you looked at COSTCO for a puppy bed – they had some nice ones (of course Costco size) for bigger pups.
Cindy, I found the AARPpost regarding supplements useful. Years ago, when restless legs at night created much frustration, a herbal/vitamin fellow suggested taking calcium as he said it would help. I did, without any further research, and a few years later , in spring of 2020, I had a very aching left side, nausea, dizziness and finally lined up outside our local emergency care facility, holding a bowl, and feeling totally retched. After a misdiagnosis of a bad UTI, and prescribed antibiotics , I still didn’t feel right. My GP sent me to an excellent urologist who diagnosed very large kidney stones❗️and they had now moved from my kidney ( causing the initial severe symptoms) and got stuck at the entrance to the ureter. He joked that I had bragging rights, as they needed to be ‘ blasted’ with a lithotripsy ( day surgery) .I was so lucky, since kidney stones cause such intense pain when travelling through our ‘pipes’. I realized that most likely unwittingly ingesting all that calcium had done the damage. Silly me.
I take Hylands “Restful Legs “ now if required , prior to bedtime. A definite overdose story regarding supplements! And a happy outcome. Thanks for highlighting this easily misunderstood use of supplements.
Your fall selection is so me! Cindy, I always depend on your excellent and inspiring fashion suggestions.I have the leopard top, black pants, similar earrings , and a different
kimono/ jacket…all set! Bring on Fall🍁.
The weather has changed as a system blew in from Oregon and Washington. Much needed rain here on Vancouver Island.⛈️. Such a relief with the parched forests here.🔥
Must get back to packing for my move to my future little patio home . 📦📦📦
Just three weeks away from my new solo , and happier life ! Peace!
I have German Shepherds who can be destructive. My favorite bed is a 4-inch memory foam pad with a washable, removable cover (available in different colors). No bolsters—just a plain pad in extra large. Available on Amazon. Love them.
And love your posts! Thank you.
Hi Terry
I have been looking at those…definitely need washable cover!!
Hi Terry
Thank you so much! I think my son and daughter in law have that same one. Will check it out!!
Hi Cindy,
I have always enjoyed Alison’s style, and her Instagram account is wonderful.
My Berne doodle Mini (30 lbs.) loves to chew. His bed no longer has sides but he’s not yet 2 years so I’m holding off buying him a new bed until he tires of chewing on his bed…which is better than chewing on my furniture. Haha. Scout is adorable! The vitamin supplement story was informative and helpful. Thank you.
Karen B.
Bought one from Orvis and had it monogrammed…not a budget purchase! My dog walked around it with disdain for about five days and I am definitely worried but once she hopped in it became her go to place. They are well constructed, lots of size variations, wash well and last forever!
HI SUSAN
I was a big fan of Orvis with my other dogs. Glad to hear they are still good. I love the idea of a monogram.
Dearest Cindy!
Thank you so very much for the feature and mention! Cannot thank you enough. So kind of you. I appreciate your kind gesture so very much.
Warm regards-
Alison ❤️

Hi Alison
So happy to do it! Love your style. I know everyone loved it!
Scout is just beautiful!!!
I loved reading the article, She Did it For the Dogs!! We have a rescue & it is the most loving dog we have ever had!! I am in favor of rescuing dogs! Just have to be careful & do your homework.
Also thought the article on supplements was good information!! We take supplements & want to make sure i don’t get too carried away!
Hi Nancy
I wanted to rescue a dog or get an older one..my husband won out with the puppy!!
Soooo many good dogs of all breeds in need of adoption at shelters all over the country! No need to buy one.
We get our dog beds from Orvis. Great quality and they have wonderful fabrics to chose from.
I wash in washing machine….fluff in dryer….they do great embroidery on name.
I’ve had ours for 2 years and they still look awesome!
We have two German Shepherds and use Costco dog beds – great price for the size and you can wash the covers, which you will need to do! We cover them with sheets and wash those weekly to prolong the less-than-fun ritual of unzipping, removing and then reinserting the inserts.
We love Orvis for their dog beds. We have 2 labs and they love them. The covers are washable too.
Scout is darling! Our dog won’t sleep on a bed (he slept beside it, using the edge as a pillow) but he likes a blanket on the floor – we used a car blanket made from something like a turn-out sheet for a horse and it’s worn like iron, even when he digs at it. I suspect the Orvis beds others have recommended are constructed of something similar, probably a good bet.
We’ve had several labs over our 35 yr marriage and the dog beds from Orvis have been great over the years! Scout is a gorgeous lab! We have a female now, Biscuits, who looks just like him.
OHHH bisquits I love that name! Send a pic to my email address!!
Costco has some great dog beds – many more on line than in warehouse.
Love your blog !!
We have two labs who were chewers as pups. We purchased Orvis Tough Chew dog beds. Orvis grantees them. Pricey but worth the $.
Hi Liz
Thank you so much. I am on it!!
Furhaven dog beds at Target have been great for our 70lb pit bull. She has a donut b d as well as the sofa bed with bolsters. She loves both! They’re on sale now a both have washable covers. Your doggie is adorable!
Thanks for sharing the information about the supplements. Good to know. Wanted to suggest Costco dog beds for Scout. The style I have is no longer available, but most of their dog beds have removable covers that can be washed. A good airing in the sun helps keep things fresh in between washings . Since I have older dogs, I cover the beds with a waterproof twin mattress cover and twin bottom sheet. Clean up is even faster as I have multiple sets.
Don’t envy you this part of puppy-hood. Had a lab/golden retriever mix and her chewing was a challenge. She was especially fond of antiques and favorite shoes. Eventually, she grew out of it . Best girl ever and I miss her.
We have loved the selection and quality of Orvis dog beds for many years. You can personalize, they’re washable, styles for puppies, senior dogs etc, fabric options, etc. Scout is adorable!
My yellow labradors love Pet Fusion beds. Long lasting and covers are replaceable.
I’m stunned seeing the beautiful combination of Polo House’s use of zebra, Asian blue and white along with bamboo in traditional decor! Unique to me! Wonderful!
I found out about WallyBeds from Bunny Williams, they’re pricey , but the whole thing goes in the wash so the insides don’t get smelly, they last forever and have great fabrics!
Chief needs to meet Scout! Scout is so so cute. Love the outfits!
