THE QUEENS GAMBIT ON NETFLIX

I started watching the Queen’s Gambit, the story about a young girl in an orphanage with an incredible talent for chess on Netflix before I became glued to the news.  It’s really good. You can read more about it here on Vanity Fair.  Will there be a second season? Esquire delves into the possibility  Anyone else loving it? Any other programs you are enjoying?  Please share!

HATTERSLEY FAMILY’S FAVORITE KITCHEN TOOLS

We are a family of cooks (especially our son and daughter in law).  I polled the group for their favorite kitchen tools.  These would make great stocking stuffers. I don’t know how I lived without a lemon zester.  I do not own any good potholders.  I did my research and these are supposed to be the best.  These kitchen shears are wonderful.  We all own this instant read thermometer.  Lauren likes these cutting boards.  They also come in black.  This garlic press is the best one I have ever owned and I have gone through several. Love these measuring cups from Target.  I use them in my pantry in the bins.  These gloves are supposed to be the best, and this juicer is invaluable!

LIFE AT BELLATERRA MUSCLE RELAXING BATH SALTS

Mary from Life at Bellaterra shared this recipe for bath salts.  The presentation is pretty and it sounds wonderful.  Mary lives in a beautiful historic home in Arizona.  I think you might enjoy her blog.I love Mary’s honesty about her diy projects,  Some of my DIY projects are disasters.  I recently made spiders, and ghosts for Summer’s neighborhood pod.  They turned out okay but I have to admit I got bored with the project about the same time Summer did.

PATRICIA’S CRANBERRY CHUTNEY

Here is a little bonus from one of my favorite readers Patricia.  I know she is a great cook, so I am going to make this.  Here is the recipe in her words:

I’m returning the favor/flavors! I have made this for decades and it is the best! It’s best served warm/room temp. I love the unexpected heat to the T-day table.

It’s also great with cream cheese or brie. It’s THE THING for next-day turkey sandwiches

Cranberry Chutney
modified from 1984 Bon Appetite recipe

2 cloves garlic
1 onion (8 oz)
4 c. cranberries (14 oz) washed, eliminated bruised fruit
1 c. golden raisins
2/3 c. dark brown sugar
1/3 vinegar (I use raspberry and balsamic combo)
1T mustard seed
1/4 t dry mustard
1/4 t ground ginger
1/2 t ground allspice
1/4 t ground nutmeg
1T cinnamon (I prefer the Vietnamese cinnamon)
3/4 t red pepper flakes and add more to taste at the end
1 container chopped dates (so long ago, dates were in containers) about a cup or more.

I use a food processor to chop the garlic and onion coarsely. Transfer to nonaluminum saucepan.
Add remaining ingredients. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer until chutney is very thick. Stir frequently, about 40 minutes

Remove from heat and add:
1 pear (8 oz) and 1 granny smith apple diced/chopped as prefer. I leave the peels on!
Return to heat, and cook 10 more minutes. Taste and add more sugar as needed. As this point, I usually use honey or maple syrup instead of brown sugar so that there isn’t any graininess (a word?).
I cup/or more toasted walnuts

Final taste test: I usually add more cinnamon and red pepper flakes.

If still too tart, I balance with a little vanilla. If too sweet, more vinegar and mustard—sometimes Worcestershire! Keeps for 4 weeks in fridge (good luck with that!)

Cindy! You always have the most interesting and creatives favorites. Something for everyone! I have not even heard of that show, but I think the show we are watching now was a recommendation from one of your reader! The Durells in Corfu.
I’m going to try to the cranberry chutney!

  2. Karen B. says

I love Cameron Kimber’s style. I received the Australian Designers Book early this year. I really like the book, it! It won’t disappoint.
Queen’s Gambit is amazing. I have one final episode to watch. I’m eager to watch it but I hate for the series to be over.
We have a family of cooks as well. I believe our two adult sons have passed me up in the skill level.
    xo,
    Karen

Have you seen “Roadkill”, “The Trouble with Maggie Cole”, “Last Tango in Halifax”, and “Hold the Sunset” on PBS? Great shows!

Cindy, I tried leaving a comment yesterday but it doesn’t appear to have sent. Thank you so much for sharing my bath salts recipe! I am so honored to be part of your Sunday Fa b 5! Love the australian designer and the chutney recipe, which I will definitely make for thanksgiving. So appreciate the shout out! You are the best!

  5. Gail says

  6. Patricia Huber says

Lots of good info here. Thanks! We enjoyed The Queen’s Gambit too. Interesting that she was from Lexington! I do not know why this is coming out in all caps?

When I shared the chutney recipe, I had no idea it would hit prime time! Hope you enjoy it. Lauren certainly sounds like a keeper. Agree with her about the cutting boards. I recently found out you can lightly sand the tops to smooth out cuts and Epicurian has a board cream for its cutting boards, too. I recently found that citrus juicer. I broke my thumb and wrist years ago, and this squeezer is a delight to use. Agree about the Rosle Garlic press. In general, I find Rosle hand tools very well made. I have a drawer full of kitchen shears looking for the one that really works to spatchcock poultry. It seems the “preferred” mode by those who know is the Weston 16″ butcher saw!!! OUt of stock!!! My husband would roll his eyes so back in his head that he would be able to see backwards! The last time he was shocked was when I bought a HUGE Dexter cleaver (for the same poultry project). It looks like an axe! it cleaves, but makes a huge splatter! Enjoy your day.

LOve The Queens Gambit (i’m not yelling, but for some reason i can’t get off all caps here). And we know zero about chess.

Speaking of tech issues, when i look at your Blog on my AmazOn fire, the Website menu is superimposed over the entry itself, making it faiRly
Impossible to read. I don’t have the Problem on my phone or desktop or
With most other sites. Has anyone else reported this probLem, and dO you know of a solution?

    Thank you!

      Hi Sarah
I will be anxious to hear if anyone else has problems. I am trying to get a cleaner, more readable look. We are currently working on it so I will pass this on to my designer. Thanks so much for letting us know.
