The Best Matching Sets for Women Over 60 (And How to Style Them)

Happy Mother’s Day from France! This was intended to be my Thursday or Friday post but it didn’t work out with my travels. Let’s join Annie and Mary Ann for our Sunday faves! There is a time every spring when I look at my closet and think: I have plenty of clothes and nothing to wear. Too many pieces that don’t relate. Too many almost-outfits. For me the matching set is the antidote to all of that.
Two pieces, same fabric, same color story, endless options. Wear them together and you have an outfit that looks intentional without trying too hard. Separate them and you’ve quietly doubled your wardrobe. For those of us who have spent decades figuring out what we actually like, this is not a trend. It’s a strategy.
I’ve been wearing matching sets for a few years now. I know they are “on trend” now, and I’ve learned a few things about what works and what doesn’t, specifically for women over 60. The wrong set can look costumey or add visual weight in places you’d rather not. The right one is the closest thing to a dress that still gives you the flexibility of separates for a win win.
This post is a practical guide about what to look for, what to skip, how to style the pieces when you’re not wearing them together, and the sets worth buying right now. Let’s dive into The Best Matching Sets for Women Over 60 (And How to Style Them)

The Best Matching Sets for Women Over 60 (And How to Style Them)

Sezane Two Piece Black Cutwork Set

This set from Sezane was a new purchase this year. I love it because I will wear both pieces separately or as a unit here.

What Makes a Matching Set Work for Women Over 60

Not all matching sets are created equal. Here’s what I actually look for, after a few years wearing them and making a few expensive mistakes along the way.

FABRIC FIRST

Linen, cotton gauze, silk, and quality terry are your friends. They drape well, travel beautifully, and photograph without looking stiff or cheap. Avoid anything with a lot of synthetic stretch. They tend to cling in places we’d rather they didn’t, and they don’t breathe. If you can wash them in a sink and let them air dry, that’s a bonus for travel. Gauze in particular is a revelation for travel: scrunch it up in your carry-on, pull it out, give it a shake. Done.

PROPORTIONS MATTER MORE THAN SIZE

This is something I learned when I was young. The question isn’t whether a set will fit, it’s whether the proportions work for your body. A cropped top paired with wide-leg trousers can be stunning on a woman over 60, However the crop needs to hit at exactly the right point (think: just at or below the natural waist, not above it). If the top runs short and you’re not sure, tuck a little, leave a little out, or layer a light jacket over it. You can control the silhouette.

Banana Republic Matching Embroidered Black Pant Set

This set is a fave from Banana Republic purchased last year. I wore it to death, and I am sure I will this year as well once weather permits. They have reimagined it this year in brown and white, and I am tempted to order the white or maybe the brown.

Wide-leg pants are almost universally flattering when paired with a more fitted top, and a relaxed top works beautifully with a straighter trouser or a midi skirt. The sets that give you trouble are usually the ones where both pieces are oversized. You end up looking shapeless rather than relaxed.

GO MONOCHROMATIC WHEN IN DOUBT

A single-color set in a color that flatters, creates a long, unbroken line from shoulder to hem. That’s the same reason a dress is so effortless. You get that same visual effect with a set, with the flexibility of separates. My most-worn sets are almost all solid. The printed ones are beautiful but require more thought.

Quince’s linen sets are price friendly, comfy, and can be dressed up with interesting accessories.

WHAT TO AVOID

Very busy, large-scale prints can look overwhelming when repeated head to toe. Extremely cropped tops are more flattering on the young. They require the right trouser and the right confidence level. Matching sets that are clearly pajama-looking (unless you are actually wearing them as pajamas, in that case, go for it). And anything that feels costumey. If the print or the silhouette is doing too much, the set is wearing you.

How to Style a Matching Set Three Ways

The real power of a matching set is in the separation. Here’s how I think about it.

Wear it Together-The Effortless Version

This is the one-and-done approach that makes matching sets so appealing in the first place. Add sandals or loafers, a great bag, some artful jewelry, and you’re done. I find that accessories are actually more important here than with a regular outfit. The set itself is so cohesive, one interesting accessory (a great hat, a woven bag, a statement earring) is all it takes to make it feel personal rather than uniform like.

This actually is not a “set” per sea. The pants are from Banana Republic, and the jacket and scarf are from Zara. I am wearing a small in the Zara jacket and could have used an XS. This jacket has great styling. I get compliments every time I wear it.

Dress it Up: The Elevated Version

Take your set somewhere it wasn’t expecting to go. A linen trouser set with a silk blouse tucked in instead of the matching top. A terry set dressed up with bold jewelry and low block-heel sandals for dinner. A printed silk set that reads as almost-formalwear when you swap the flat sandals for a low heel and add a vintage clutch. The Mint Velvet set I featured last year does exactly this. I’ve worn it to a wedding and out to a casual lunch and it reads completely differently each time.

These two sets are no longer available but any colorful twosome would look fabulous!

Wear the Pieces Separately-The Multiplier

This is where the real wardrobe value lives. The matching trouser becomes your best wide-leg pant when paired with a white linen shirt or a simple tee. The matching top can become a layering piece under a blazer or over a turtleneck in cooler months. I bought a Frank & Eileen set two years ago and I genuinely cannot tell you the last time I wore both pieces on the same day. I wear each of them constantly, just not always together. That is not a failure of the set. That is the set doing its job.

The Sets I Keep Coming Back To

If I had to recommend one investment matching set for women over 60, this is it. The fabricwashes beautifully, travels well, and holds its shape after dozens of wears. I’ve styled mine with white sneakers for a casual day, with a belt and sandals for lunch out, and with a white denim jacket for cooler evenings. Each time it looks deliberate. Frank & Eileen is women-owned and ethically made, which matters to me, and the price reflects that. Consider it a cost-per-wear investment rather than a splurge.

Old Navy Gauze-The High-low Win

Not every great matching set costs a fortune. The Old Navy cotton gauze collection is one of my most-worn finds . Last year Ibought four pieces (the button-up shirt, the midi skirt, the pants, and the popover top) and I’ve been mixing and matching them ever since. Gauze is wrinkle-resistant in the best possible way: wash it in a sink, stretch it slightly, air dry. Done. For those of you who find linen’s wrinkle factor annoying (I hear you), gauze is your answer. I’ve worn this on travel days with sneakers and a baseball cap, and dressed it up with turquoise jewelry and my favorite Etsy woven bag. The price point means you can experiment without commitment. I am ordering this years mustard version before it sells out!

The Frank and Eileen Terry Travel Sets

I own several of the Frank and Eileen Travel sets which hold their shape even after a long travel day. I’ve worn mine on planes more times than I can count. Dress them up with a horn necklace for lunch, down with flip flops at the beach (Scout approves). They come in multiple styles and colorways , and the separates work just as well on their own.

Eileen Fisher & More for Color Lovers

If you want to actually wear color, and I think you should, this set delivers. I styled mine with a vintage turquoise necklace for a dressed-up version, and with a Sundance linen jacket for something more structured. Eileen Fisher runs large and relaxed, which is intentional to her design philosophy. I always size down. The separates are endlessly useful: the pants in particular are among the most versatile I own.

The Matching Sets Worth Buying Right Now:

Spring/summer 2026 is a strong season for matching sets. Here’s where I’m seeing the most wearable options for women over 60.

These are the Sets I am Coveting

I am particularly loving the ones from Simon Miller a designer new to me. Love the mix and match stripe options.

LINEN COORDINATES: Linen sets in all of the colors of the rainbow are everywhere right now. Look for sets where the top has a little length (not cropped) and the trouser has a relaxed wide leg. Quince, Mango, and Frank & Eileen all have strong options at different price points.

If linen makes you nervous read my post on How to Style and Care for Linen Clothing after 50.

PRINTED SILK OR SILK-LIKE SEPARATES: A printed two-piece in a small, tonal print (small florals, abstract marks, soft geometrics) reads elevated without being loud. These are the sets that work for weddings, travel dinners, and anything that requires looking polished without trying too hard.

UTILITY AND STRUCTURED COTTON: “Cargoesque” sets in cotton or cotton blend, in olive, khaki, or off-white. These skew more casual but styled with good sandals and simple jewelry they’re surprisingly chic. The key is fit. Avoid anything boxy on top if the trouser is also relaxed.

WHAT I’M SKIPPING: Matching sets in very sheer fabrics that require a lot of layering underneath, anything in a neon or very high-contrast print, and sets with shorts (this is a personal preference) By all means wear shorts if you can rock them! I find midi or ankle-length trousers more versatile and more universally more flattering

HOW DO YOU STYLE A MATCHING SET WITHOUT LOOKING LIKE YOU’RE IN A UNIFORM?

Gap red linen separates

Accessories!! One interesting piece a woven bag, a great hat, a bold earring, a vintage scarf is all it takes to make a coordinated set feel personal. Also: wear the pieces separately as often as you wear them together. That’s when you really see the value.

ARE MATCHING SETS GOOD FOR TRAVEL?

They’re one of the best travel wardrobe choices I know. A two-piece set that you can wear together or separately gives you multiple outfits from two pieces. Choose linen, gauze, or quality terry. They wash easily, dry quickly, and don’t wrinkle beyond recovery.
I’ve been saying for years that the best wardrobe pieces are the ones you reach for without thinking. The ones that make getting dressed feel easy rather than effortful. Matching sets, for me, have become exactly that. Not because they’re trendy (though they are right now) but because they solve an actual problem: the coordinated, intentional look that takes no time and gives you room to own it.

If you’re new to the matching set world, start with one solid-color linen or gauze set in a neutral. See how you wear it. I’d bet you reach for it more than almost anything else in your closet. 1. The cutwork red outfit (be still my beating heart) and the dark denim with the darker floral patterned over -dyed are perfection for me. Nice array and beautifully styled as always.

  2. Thank you for this great post. I appreciate the time and effort you put into it.
I want to add that the linen at JJill is also very reasonably priced especially on sale. It wears well and washes well.

  3. I hear what you say about gauze being good for warm weather and travel……versus linen.

Last summer I bought a matching set in double gauze from Michael Stars. It is very high quality, I am happy with it. They also offer a few of the items in petite sizes, you might want to check them out for future reference.

  4. I have enjoyed and purchased some of the clothing you have shown, but $648 for a pair of summer black eyelet pants is over and above my range. Wish you would show more reasonably priced items.

  5. I love the concept of matching sets, but at 5′ 3″ with a fit body, I find the wide legs make me look shorter and don’t add a flattering line. I like narrow legs–I know the drill about wide legs with fitted top etc. , but I don’t like it on me. Glad it works for you, but each time I try it, I regret it. Your selections are lovely and you look great–glad you are promoting accessories to vary the look too–I enjoy your column so much. This is not a criticism of your choices, just asking that you consider so less wide options too.

    1. Hi Robyn

I understand exactly what you are saying. I often feature a kick flare which I think is universally flattering. A narrow leg is harder to come by these days, although the cigarette pant (which I love) is coming back!!

  6. Cindy, I love a two-piece set and that Veronica beard double denim situation, and the way you are styling it, is simply gorgeous.

  7. Hi Martha!
I have the opposite proboem! I am extremely long waisted with short legs! I bet you are loving the slightly cropped tops.

  8. I do love the matching set trend! The thing I have to watch is I am so short wasted sometimes the tops come down and hit me in my widest part of my body so I’m always looking for something that hits the magic spot!! As usual, you look so cute and everything. I love the red paired with the turquoise necklace.!

      1. I love the look of the Frank &Eileen travel sets but I also worry about the unfinished edges, especially in that price range! Do they fray with use? Would you give me an idea of what to expect? —Deb

  9. Hi Cindy,
Well as usual you inspired me. I appreciate that you feature all price points here, I will never pay the Frank and Eileen prices, for a bunch of reasons.
Anyway, I bought a few more crinkle gauze items, they really are cool and comfortable! I love coming home after a day running errands and seeing packages on my porch!
Hope for you it cools off soon down there!
    Xo Heidi

  10. Great ideas! Thanks for sharing so many options for the travel sets. Unfortunately, the Frank and Eileen sets are VERY pricey. I will use your ideas and look for affordable options!

    1. Hi Mary

I understand Frank and Eileen can be prohibitive. I really like the gauze from Old Navy and find the quality to be good!

  11. I just love it all & the great ideas. I love the gauze. Nice for summer & fall & the colors & love the accessories. Thank you for your article & the great ideas. I will be using. I only have the white, tan & orange gauze. Bon in Maryland

  12. I love the sets, but straight leg pants look better on me. The Eileen Fisher pants appear to be slimmer than the others you’ve shown—do you know of any others at a lower price?

    1. Hi Marilyn

Did you try the Old Navy gauze? The legs aren’t overly wide. J Crew also has the soleil pant which has a straighter leg.

  13. I love seeing what you put on your posts!
I’m not a matchy-matchy person BUT I’m so impressed on how everything looks so good on you! I can’t imagine what your closet looks like and how you choose what to wear each day!
    Thank you!
    You are an inspiration!

    Pat Demling

    1. Hi Pat

We just visited Pat and Bill in San Jose! I am not normally matchy matchy either but I love the option of creating multiple outfits!!

  14. Sadly the brands you mention aren’t readily available in Australia and the price tag to purchase online and then post here is ENORMOUS and makes them not only unrealistic but unethical because of airmiles.
A couple of our own brands are doing the matchy-matchy thing: Sportscraft, Seed, Sussann, H &M and even the super budget-priced Sportsgirl. So women here in Australia can use your great concepts on less pricy garments.

    1. Hi Prue

I love so many of your Australian brands. I wish more of them were more accessible here in the states!!

  15. Cindy- you have given me so many options for wearing sets. I really do love them- look so polished. Pls tell how u tie ur shirt in front?? BTW- you look fabulous in all of these!!!

    1. Hi Paula

I am so glad to hear that! I have tried the “fancy” ways that other influencers have suggested and don’t like the way they look on me. All I do is turn my shirt under a big in back and tie!

  16. Cindy, thanks for all the great styling tips as I have seen these on others and thought they looked matronly. But you have certainly created stylish ways to make them attractive. Of course I agree that you look adorable all the time!

  17. Hey Cindy,
Love your outfits!!! I am traveling with two matching sets next week and will be using your ideas for mixing and matching the pieces! I would love to know how you tie your shirts at the waist and how the shirt looks in the back. I struggle with that whole concept! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
    Myla

    1. Hi Myla

As I stated above I have tried the “fancy” way influencers have suggested and the look isn’t flattering on me personally as my waist is the only small part of me! All I do is roll the shirt under a bit in the back and tie in the front. Jennifer, Beth and many others have a way that they like but it isn’t flattering on me. What they do is pull each end through the shirt in between two buttons and tie. It looks great on them but makes me look like a cow.

  18. I swear Cindy…you could wear a paper sack and it would look great on you! These matching sets look awesome! I haven’t jumped on that bandwagon yet but thinking I may have to try it!

  19. Cindy:
I have jumped on the band wagon for the matching sets. I’m hoping it’s not a trendy thing for just one season. I have purchased several sets. I have a sage green one from jJill, a navy one from jJill, and a black and white one from jJill. Sorry I’m a devoted shopper! I love the Eileen Fisher one you modeled! I may have to look at that one. You look spectacular in it!

    1. Hi Kathy

Thank you for reminding me! I failed to post the J Jill Gauze set that I wear all the time including right now!

  20. all of these sets are totally adorable on you and I love how you styled each one for a unique look. I love sets! I have a couple from Free People and my fave is a set from 4-5 years ago that I saw a woman wear and I chased after her to find out where she got it. It was on sale at H&M for $30. and I still love it and i still get complements every time I wear it!
The Frank and Eileen sets are a great investment – classic pieces that will last.
Hope you stay cool up in Paso – going to be pretty toasty!

  21. Hi Cindy! Love this post…So many great ideas. We all have many similar pieces that we can use to create interesting outfits, I love how you tie your white and denim shirts! Classy and fun look, Gauze travels so well. Less space and no wrinkles. Thank you for helping stay in style and confident, 🥰 Anna in Arizona 🌵
