How to Style Velvet Leggings over 50

Happy Wednesday everyone.  Jennifer from A Well Styled Life and I are here for our monthly installment. We are talking about styling velvet leggings.  Are you afraid to wear them or do you love them?  I have never owned a pair but I must say they are like wearing a pair of jammies.  The trick to wearing any leggings at our age is to make sure they cover the bum at the very least and hopefully even more.  Let’s take a look at How to Style Velvet Leggins Over 50. For me, it is all about the accessories.  I have collected Native American and vintage jewelry for years.

As you know, my sister passed away last month.  My niece sent me this coat (which I remember her wearing during happier times in Napa) and a few other things . It took me a week to even open the box.   She had great taste and style.  We were built totally differently but to my surprise, it fit.  It was hard to even put on at first, but I am hopeful I will get to the point that it feels good to wear it.  I accessorized my eileen fisher leggings it with my usual denim shirt, vintage celluloid pin, tortoise earrings, horn bracelets, and my comfy velvet birdies.

There’s nothing more flattering than head to toe black if you have put on a few covid pounds. Does anyone else have that problem, if so raise your hand! I love this supersoft J Crew Sweater.  I have it in several colors.  It is longer in the back so it covers the bum.  I am wearing it with my favorite bed stu boots, turquoise earrings I have had for years, and an inherited turquoise nugget necklace and ring.

Here I am wearing an old buffalo plaid cape with my velvet leggings and the same j crew sweater.  The cape is held together with a vintage navajo pin.  I am wearing a pair of navajo cross earrings and a couple of my Navajo bangles.  You can find several here on Ebay. I have linked a few below if you don’t want to sift through them.  Most of my jewelry is vintage that I have collected over the years.

I know Jennifer is wearing our favorite Artful Home Planet Artists Smock  (the best shirt on earth that you have seen me in multiple times. I decided to give you a break (I know you are tired of it!) and wear this Chicos no iron (well almost) white tunic Shirt with my velvet birdies, a Kashmiri scarf, and inexpensive rhinestone accessories. You can find many rhinestone brooches on ebay for reasonable prices here

The velvet leggins are styled here with the fabulous Peruvian Connection Fiorello Alpaca Cutaway Jacket.  You can also see it styled multiple ways here. The jacket is half price right now, but it is an investment piece. I have linked a more reasonable one below as well. I am wearing it with an older j crew perfect shirt similar shirt from Chicos linked below, simple rhinestone accessories and my favorite Artemis Mules. which are a splurge but so worth it!

Lastly, I am wearing a Mieko Mintz from Artful Home vest (no longer available but similar here) For those of you that are new here Jennifer and I collaborated with Artful Home for several years so we have some really nice things that we were gifted like this vest. I am wearing the same J Crew Sweater, stacked Native American bangles, and pueblo cross earrings.  I have linked some similar Kantha vests from Etsy below.

Thanks for reading How to Style Velvet Leggings over 50.  Each month Jennifer and I are trying tacking something those of us “at a certain age” think that we can’t wear or we find difficult.  Please share your thoughts on anything that you would like us to discuss.  We want this to be fun.  Now pop over and see how Jennifer style her velvet leggings.  We take turns picking things so there is a lot of moaning and groaning going on during the week when we are trying to put things together and look halfway stylish.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Jodie
Uh oh does that mean they usually look like they are wearing me?!! Thank you for the sweet comment!

  2. Rose says

I loved all the outfits. Question cindy—ive been told by one of the store’s associates thay these leggings bag out and can only be worn once before washing again. Have you found them to bag out and Any comment on sizing—-true tO size? Did you purchase misses or petite?

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Rose
interesting. i did buy the petite small. thank you for asking. i should have shared that. i have not found them to bag but i have only worn mine a couple of times. i listed a less expensive pair if you want to give them a try. i probably would not wear them more than twice anyway. i usually manage to sp0ill something on them.

  3. Karen B. says

    Hi Cindy,
I might wear them for a special occasion. I still wear leggings so I figure what’s the difference between typical leggings and Velvet? Just a little fancier.

You look amazing and I’m always inspired to make sure I’m staying relevant fashion-wise- no matter my age.
    xo,
    Karen

    • Cindy Hattersley says

Very true karen! my favorites are still the faux leather and suede because i rarely get dressed up!

  4. Barb Lucido says

LOve it all! Each outfIt is styled beautiFulLy anD you look amazing. Thanks for the TIps. Someday, when you put on your sisters BeautiFul coat, it will feel like a comforting hug.
    (All caps for me too)

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Barb
I don’t know what the all caps thing is about. I am looking into it. Thank you I am sure you are right about my sister’s coat.

  5. Nan says

Hi Cindy- Some day your sister’s coat will feel more comfortable to wear. It’s lovely on you, as is EVERYTHING you wear. I just snagged aN Embroidered Wool Long duster Jacket on eBay to top my leggings collection. At 67, I wear leggings with long tunics , short dresses, Long vests, ponchos, or Duster jackets, all hit about 4-6″ above my knees or below. Being 5’3″, leggings give me an illusion of height. Adding boots, booties, or blingy flats is my favorite finish.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Nan
Thank you for the kind comment about my sister. I look forward to that day. We are totally on the same page with our fashion sense. I am only one inch taller and agree with everything you say. We need to meet one day, i think we are two peas in a pod!!

      • Nan says

When my grandmother died, I inherited some of her chic wardrobe. She had been the Women’s Fashion buyer for a department store some time ago. It was a couple years till I could wear anything of hers without crying. I am so thankful I held onto them! A purple lofty mohair Wool sweater tunic embroidered in acid green and fuschia flowers, hand-knit in France was my favorite; I wore until it fell apart.

Absolutely would love to meet one day!

  6. Sandra Sallin says

We could just share closets. I love it all and dress very similarly. I think you know that. Love it all. Why are aLl my letters showing up as capitals? Is it me or you. Bottom line love it all and wear it all. I understand about your sister. It takes guts to open the box and wear her clothes. As they say in the Jewish religion. May her memory be a blessing.

  7. Susie q says

You are always so put together and look so classy. what happened in the first picture of you in leggings? It looks like you have two right legs.

Just wondering. Enjoy your columns so much.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

Ha! You are right? I have always been oddly flexible. I am certainly not a natural model. You will have to forgive me!!

  8. Jennifer Connolly says

I thought you would look amazing, and you do!! Your collection of accessories are stunning. I haven’t seen you wearing red before and think it looks smashing. This one was fun!!!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

I know I need to wear red more but I find it hard to get the right color. I am always on the lookout though! It’s always fun doing these, and challenging! You always get me thinking!

  9. Sue Lewellen says

YOU ARE SO SLIM, YOU COULD WEAR A POTATO SACK AND IT WOULD LOOK FABULOUS! i GAVE UP ON VELVET A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO WHEN I SAW MY PHOTO IN A VELVET SHIRT AT cHRISTMAS! vELVET IS REFLECTIVE, AND mY bOOBS LOOKED LIKE TWO BIG, SHINY HEADLIGHTS!!! i MIGHT BE ABLE TO PULL OF VELVET LEGGINGS, BECAUSE MY LEGS ARE SMALL. bY THE wAY, THAT COAT IS GLORIOUS!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Sue
I am not thin especially now. Trust me that is why I am wearing a column of black. I think I agree with you about velvet on the top! I love the texture but???? I was skeptical about these leggings when Jennifer suggested them but they sure are comfy!!

  10. 1010ParkPlace says

I’ve had a pair of black velvet leggings for years, but don’t often wear them unless I’m on the low end of my weight spectrum because they highlight my legs more than non velvet leggings. I have always been a black velvet girl. High drama. Even back to my early 20’s I had several pairs of Gloria Vanderbilt’s black velvet, straight legged jeans. They were the best fitting of all of my jeans and I could dress them up or down. xoxox, Brenda

    • Cindy Hattersley says

OMG gloria vanderbilt straight leg velvet jeans…we must be close in age…I have forgotten because you look so much younger! I agree about the weight…I carry mine in my legs, bum & boobs…not pretty right now!!

  11. Meg Johnson says

You look fabuous in all the outfits! Sorry to hear of your sisters passing. I lost my Sister two years ago it has been tough without her.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Meg

Thank you for your kind words. I knew my sister was going to pass but you are never totally prepared. I prefer to remember her when she was healthy and happy. I am working on that now.

  12. Char says

I bought velvet leggings last year and they look great with longer tunic type tops or longer high-low
tops. I usually do all black and some great jewelry like you have shown. I am shorter and a size 8 but
my legs are not Thin. The leggings need to be thicker and with some control to smooth you out and
not look like tights! I am in my 60s but like to look a little edgy-chic so once I wore them and
got compliments (especially from my daughter) it bolstered my confidence. At any rate I love
your pins and the longer white shirt! I am going to try that this year since I live in Arizona and not
sure we are going to be out of the 80’s.🙁Thanks for the looks! BTW I am typing in all caps too and do not
want that..not sure whats happening on your end….

  13. Lorna says

I love how you’ve styled them You have some fabulous clothes and accessories. I don’t own a pair of velvet leggings but I adore velvet anything and will wear it even if it’s not in fashion.

    • Heidi says

      Hi Cindy,
I love what you’ve done here! Every look is flattering and fun! You look so pretty!
I do wear velvet leggings. But I never thought to wear them casually, i’ve usually worn them to holiday parties etc. with the appropriate top to look festive. I have a new pair of tall boots and several sweaters that would work. Hmmm, you’ve given me ideas.
Now if only there was someplace safe to go out and about. I dress everyday but it’s not fun being stuck in the house!
      Xo heidi
Getting all caps, here on my ipad, too!

      • Cindy Hattersley says

I agree Heidi…if only we had somewhere to go…it will come…we just have to get through this winter…have a great day!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Lorna

The beauty of being my age is you don’t have to worry too much about whether it is in fashion as long as you love it…so go for it!!

  14. Francesca B. says

THank you Cindy for the wonderful suggestions you look terrific! My laptop is giving me only caps but i wanted to write and tell you your style rocks!!
Hope you have found a buyer and are moving on to new horizons.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Francesca
Sorry about the only cap thing. Luckily it doesn’t show up so no worries. Please comment. We will get it fixed!

  15. JoannA says

You have the most amazing Pieces in your wardrobe. I’m quite envious! You always look Stylish and eleganT, Cindy.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Joanna

I have to be honest. I buy most of my clothes on Ebay. But I am no stranger to a bargain in the store either! Just as I do in my home I like a collected look on me as well. I have collected vintage & native american jewelry for over 20 years.

  16. Cherie says

Exactly the same comments as Susan Klussman. 74. let my hair go to its natural color — pretty much white, especially in front — still working on a style but think i’ll keep it short. 5’1″ and that might be exagerating, 110 pounds, narrow shoulders. Live in Naples, FL. very recently Divorced and not going anywhere… very casual lifestyle. Wish i could wear everything you own. i live vicariously through you and your posts. Oh, and to live in your beautifully curated home– To be back in my home state of Northern California is always a dream but not reality.
At this age, it’s difficult to know what to wear in hot, humid temperatures to look casual “trendy” but not trying too hard. You are an inspiration! It’s always a treat to get something a new posting from you.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Cherie

How do you like Naples besides the humidity and heat?!!! I am so sorry to hear about your divorce. I hope it was mutual. In the summer I wear nothing but linen. Two years ago I was in Florida for three weeks in July. I found linen to be the most comfortable!!

  17. LA CONTESSA says

YOU ASKED SO HEAR I GO……………
YOU LOOK FANTASTIC IN ALL THE PHOTOS TO START BUT I would NEVER wear a top like in your THIRD photo so short as one can see the CROTCH especially upon sitting down. With leggings my OPINION they are NOT PANTS………….they are to keep you warm and cover the leg.ALSO, the black jacket shot with THAT JACKET for me is TOO SHORT…………how I would make it better is with one of your statement coats that is A TAD LONGER.YOU can get away with it BUT MOST CANNOT.
    YOUR sisters coat is GORGEOUS!
I can relate about NOT OPENING the BOX as today I realized something about MY MOM and had slept in her cashmere sweater last night as I was so cold! Then it HIT ME today was the day she died THREE YEARS AGO……………
Velvet leggingS YES I will wear them bought my first pairs in South Africa 11 years ago……..A FABULOUS line made by a friend of a FRIEND who had DIED (went for the funeral)!I went BESERK as the colors and the whole line was FANTASTIC!!!HOWEVER, I found out they slide down…………..BUT I think it was SOFT SURROUNDING who made a pair that was high waist and I lIved in those for a couple of years under my long dresses………………and long sweaters to my knees.
WHAT brand did you BUY or did you say and I just missed it…………………
YOU should be a SPOKES WOMAN FOR A MAJOR BRAND!Lets all decide here on THE BLOG WHICH LINE!!!!

Everyone of the ways you styled the leggings looks great. I think that having the bum covered With a longer top is the only way to wear, at any age. Yes, i would totally wear velvet leggings!
Heres a thought for a topic: nail polish colors. I see you wearing A shade which looks lavender and it really works on you. I am more COMFORTABLE iN neutrals that make my nails look cared for but dont announce themselves. My haNds have lost fat so the veins are prominent and i just as soon nOt draw attention to them.
    Thanks for your fun blog.

    • wren says

I want to explain that the capitalization done in the above post was not done purposely by me (maybe that is what happened to Tempie also?).
As I type this, all letters show in caps, I have no choice; the final way it showed up was a big surprise to me. Since I appreciate good spelling, grammar, and punctuation, needed to get that off my chest!

      • Cindy Hattersley says

        Hi Wren

We are working on the issue. Fortunately, the only one who sees caps is you. Please don’t be afraid to comment. We are all friends here!!

  19. Tempie says

I look forward to your post and have loved every one of Them. I have begun Wearing some of my lovely broaches the way yOu do With a turnEd up collar. Thank you a thousand times over.

  20. susan klusmann says

You are my favorite blog and if it can’t be me that buys your wonderful house, I hope yor sale is successful! O.K., over 50 is one thing, 73 is something else!! I find myself question often though my hair style- my hairdresser changed me from blonde to red a number of years ago because i am pale and I get lots of compliments- is trendy, I’m usually (thanks covid/chocolate) size 4-6, small, 5’5″ tall, pear shape, live in Austin- hot, hot hot! . My questions:

When am I pushing the envelope too hard? I love style but want to look classically trendy. I love that you know what you love. I have a lot of lovely, unworn things because styling them is challenging– covid doesn’t help that either since I go no where and see no one! , but there will come a day….how do you focus and narrow down?

You wear a lot of vest- like toppers- love them., so much better for this climate. Wouldn’t they make my shoulders look even more narrow? It’s hard to be objective sometimes!!

Your writing is wonderful- I see things totally through your perspective and I can’t imagine how time consuming it is, but I am always so happy to see you in my inbox!!! Thank you so much- take good care! my best, Susan Klusmann

    • Cindy Hattersley says

Susan you made my day! What a sweetheart you are! Pushing the envelope too hard NEVER!! Look at Sandra she is going to be 80 this weekend. I don’t always know what I love trust me. To me with age has come wisdom, and the ability to be comfortable in my own skin. I still buy things I don’t wear but I try not to. I wish I were some sort of expert regarding your shoulders…maybe Jennifer could answer that. I have largish shoulders. You sound to me like you have great style. I doubt you need to worry. I have found the clothes that I feel most comfortable in are interesting jackets and sweaters that I can wear with jeans, because that is what I wear most of the time unless I am wearing leggings!! But, as you said, none of us are going anywhere now. I am hoping by May we will see the light at the end of the tunnel and Summer can have a real birthday party when she turns 3.
