Six Casual Blazers Every Woman Over 50 Needs

Getting dressed can sometimes be a challenge, especially as we navigate the ever-evolving world of fashion after 60. There is one piece of clothing that consistently delivers a powerful punch of polish, structure, and style, it’s the blazer. Forget those stuffy, preppy versions of the past; today’s blazers are versatile, chic, and the ultimate wardrobe secret weapon. Whether you’re heading to a meeting, a casual lunch with friends, or a fun night out, the right blazer can instantly elevate your look from fine to fabulous. Ready to refresh your wardrobe with a blazer you can wear for years? I am joining Kim from Northern California Style for our monthly Signature Style Series, and I haverounded up the six casual blazers that every woman over 50 needs.

Basic Black

Of all the blazers in your arsenal, the simple black blazer stands alone as the undisputed MVP. It’s the equivalent of a little black dress, but with greater mileage. What makes it so brilliant? Its inherent versatility. A well-tailored black blazer instantly sharpens any outfit, transforming simple jeans and a t-shirt into a savvy casual outfit, or providing the perfect structured layer over a simple dress. It’s an investment piece that defies trends, always looks polished, professional, and sophisticated.

I love a longline blazer. I have owned this one for years. I was gifted this blazer probably 10 years ago from Peruvian Connection. It is unlined boiled wool and fits beautifully. It’s quite pricey, but I did find one on Thread Up here, and here.. One of my favorite ways to wear it is with a favorite scarf (similar here) belted underneath. I am wearing it with a mock neck cashmere sweater, and sweaterpants.

military inspired jacket with paisley scarf and leather pants

This military blazer from Rag and Bone is a couple of years old. I found one on Poshmar, here, and the Real Real here. I am wearing it with a vintage paisley scarf, (similar here) a vintage rhinestone pin, faux leather pants (size 0), and my comfy Gentle Souls booties.

Casual Knit

While structure and tailoring are important, sometimes comfort is key, and that’s where the casual knit blazer comes in. Unlike its wool or fully-lined counterparts, the knit blazer’s construction is less rigid, and is usually made from comfortable, ponte or jersey. It has the ability to offer the polished look of a blazer without the formality. It’s perfect for travel, working from home, or for those days when you want to feel put-together without feeling “buttoned-up”.

Frank and Eileen Dublin Knit Blazer

My friends at Ambiance gifted me this Frank and Eileen Dublin jacket. This green is currently unavailable. I am wearing a Small. If you come to Paso Ambiance is a must. It is great for travel, looks great with a skirt, as well as jeans. I am wearing it with Frank and Eileen’s malibu travel set in a small.

Cozy Wool

A cozy wool blazer adds polish while keeping you warm and comfortable, making it the perfect blend of style and practicality for cooler days

I have had this Slade blazer from Rag and Bone (size 8) for a couple of years. It is unlined and super soft. The navy is on sale at Saks here. On the left I am wearing it with the beautiful (gifted) Spartina449 (size medium) (a company new to me) dress, Gentle Souls booties, and Gigi Pip hat. On the right, I am wearing it with jeans (27), a white shirt with lace trim, and the same boots.

Bold & Fun

A fun patterned blazer instantly elevates even the simplest outfit, adding personality, confidence, and a touch of playful sophistication to your look.

BR Mens Jacket & Mersea denim set

I bought this jacket on sale this year at Banana Republic. It is technically a mens jacket (size Small) I thought it was playful and fun and cozy. I meant to share this in the Statement Jacket post but failed to get a picture. I am wearing it with the great Mersea denim pant (super soft and great for travel), and shirt ( I am wearing small in both), and my Gentle Souls booties.

Chicos Knit Blazer with Mersea denim set

This great Chicos blazer packs a lot of bang for the buck. I am wearing it with the same set from Mersea above, simple Eastland driving mocs, and a vintage brooch.

Classic Camel

A classic camel blazer is the ultimate wardrobe staple. It is a neutral that pairs well with black, navy and everything in between adding instant elegance and sophistication to any outfit.

Xirena dress with Rag and Bone Slade Blazer for Fall

This is the popular Rag and Bone Slade blazer. (at a great price at Nordstrom Rack here) I love it because it can span the seasons, and it looks great with almost everything.I size up in this blazer. I am wearing a size 8. I am wearing it with a Xirena dress no longer available (one on Poshmark here), Portland leather bag, and Gentle Souls booties. This Chicos dress that I featured recently would have the same look.

Double Breasted

A double-breasted blazer exudes timeless sophistication with its structured silhouette and flattering, waist-defining fit that flatters nearly every body.

The blazer on the left is from Ann Taylor, and the blazer on the right from Talbots (size 6). The Ann Taylor version is heavy enough for a light coat. I ended up gifting this one to my daughter because it wqs a tad large on me. I should have ordered a 4. My daughter loves it. I am wearing it with the AYR jeans, a simple chambray shirt, Madewell bandana similar here, and Gentle Souls booties. I am wearing the Talbots blazer with these Madewell jeans, a scarf I found on eBay, my favorite Tory Burch crossbody and the same booties.

  1. I love blazers! When I was working as a court reporter in Northern California I could wear them every day. Now that I am retired, living in St. Petersburg, Florida, a blazer is usually too hot for our climate, but I have kept all my blazers and take them traveling with me and wear them in our short cool season (coming right up.) I bought many of them at Chico’s in Santa Rosa, and many I found poking around in consignment shops over the year.
By the way, this year I’m going to try to improve on my tried and true accessories, belts, jewelry and scarves. I’m looking forward to your always-wonderful tips!

    1. Hi Eva

I always so enjoy hearing from you. You inspire me! We have new friends in our neighborhood that live part time in St. Petersburg and part time here. I also have a good friend from high school that resides there, though we have lost touch. I live a casual lifestyle here as well. If I wear a blazer, it is with jeans.

  2. Cindy, you always look stylish. Love all of these blazers and look.
    Have a wonderful weekend.

  3. Cindy Another super post. I am continually amazed at how you make what you own look new, fresh and current with your styling! So many great ideas and perfect pieces.
I love you in all of these. I may need to get a green in that Frank & Eileen. I love that style so much.
Fun doing this with you. xo

  4. I love blazers also, alas not the one in Italian linen we talked about. I returned that in the nick of time and got one the same color at BR on sale. Last winter, I ordered a faux leather one from JCrew in black but am consigning it because I don’t like the “hard” look of it.
There’s the colorful jacket you borrowed from the menswear – kind of fun! You and Kim have a great round-up of styles.

  5. You look great in blazers. They really do complete your outfits. I found I was reaching for mine so I consigned them.
You have an extensive wardrobe. This might be a personal question but how do you store all your clothes – a really big closet, an unused bedroom, your office….

    1. Hi Joanna
I have all my in season clothes in my closet, and my out of season clothes in the guest bedroom closet. I also consign things I am not wearing to Ernest and Grace or her other shop the Other Sister. I am gifted a lot of clothing each season . I keep some and pass the others along.

  6. Love me a blazer – I have several blazers and a few “lady jackets”….makes anything look more polished!

Unrelated question – I love you in hats ❣️ – I can also rock a hat, I have many – where exactly do you wear them? They seem too dressed up for errands?!
Do you wear them to dinners? If so, do you keep them on during the meal? I have done that before and everyone stared at me like I was nuts. But once I put it on, I have “hat hair” and it can’t come off! Just curious as to how you handle this!

    1. I have had others ask this question. I wear them out to lunch or wine events in the day time for shade. I think people in California wear hats more than they do in other parts of the country, I will also wear them to dinner and events as well, but I don’t wear them all the time. I almost wore a hat last night to a dinner event, but decided against it. I noticed not a single person was wearing a hat interestingly!

      1. Thanks for the info – I love you in them and I look good in them too. Just wish I could wear them more often!

  7. I’m curious about fit? I don’t like the oversized blazers. I have two wool traditional blazers single button that I have held on to but my bust is larger now and I can’t comfortably wear them buttoned. Is it okay to wear a blazer that doesn’t quite close? Or is it time to say goodbye and pass these along?

    1. Hi Harriet

I have the same problem with the added weight that I am carrying currently. The green Rag and Bone blazer that I am wearing with the dress is tight in the bust, so I wore it open.
