Mary Ann, Annie and I are so excited to let you know that we are being interviewed on the fabulous podcast Decorating Tips and Tricks with Kelly Wilkness and Anita Joyce. We are big fans and are so honored! Today we thought it would be fun to answer the questions that we were unable to cover and let you know about the fabulous giveaway we are doing in honor of the podcast.  Here is the link to the podcast. Enjoy!

So let’s take a look at the Podcast Interview Outtakes-The Collected Look.

THE COLLECTED LOOK HOW TO GET IT

Those of you who have been reading this blog long know I have a love affair with the collected look. I have written many posts about it beginning with one of my most popular posts The Collected Look and How to Get It. If you are new you might enjoy reading it for background information.

Podcast Interview Outtakes-The Collected Look

When Kelly interviewed us for the podcast she gave us a list of questions for us to answer and naturally with all of us chatting there were some questions that went unanswered.

#1 What Does the Collected Look Mean to You

For me, it is a blended mix of the old and new, with treasures and artifacts from one’s travels. I love the mixing and matching furniture styles and utilizing a variety of textures and finishes, and the ability to bring disparate objects together in a harmonious mix.

This corner in my family room has an antique cupboard filled with redware pottery, a modern coffee table, and wicker chairs rejected by a client. The modern coffee table is layered with a vintage breadboard, a vintage redware bowl, a sea urchin, and a Hungarian pickling jar filled with flowers. Probably my newest “purchases” are the pickling jar, sea urchin, and the breadboard.

#2 Describe How Listeners Can Achieve This Style/Look

Shop antique, vintage, and second-hand stores and flea markets,  Mix the high and low, and the old and new. Don’t be afraid to mix something from Target with higher-end furniture and accessories. Inject your own personality by adding things that have meaning.

Here in my own home, I have mixed the Studio McGee for Target wood vase and limestone link with an antique french brides box.  The coffee table is modern and the painting in the background is by Artist Patricia Huber.  Vintage textile pillow on the chair.

Here in Mary Ann’s San Francisco apartment, she has mixed vintage lithographs, a gorgeous traditional coffee table with collected accessories from her many travels.

Annie favors a clean minimalist look but always mixes lots of texture with organic gathered treasures.

#3 What advice would you give someone struggling to develop their signature style?

Only buy what you love that will stand the test of time. Study other designers’ work that you admire and put them on Pinterest boards for reference. Create a mood board. Buy design books that feature looks you are drawn to. Once you have done this you will begin to develop your own sensibility and style.

#4 Favorite Decorating Book

Oh boy, the list is long.  You can check out all of my Design Book Favorites on my Shop Page here for the books I own and love.

These books are either in my cart or on my wishlist. Cannot wait to receive Mark Sikes More Beautiful anxiously awaiting that one.

#5 Favorite Small and or Online Decor Shops

In my area, I love Tancredi and Morgen, Patine, Warmth Company, and Wisteria Antiques.

I am a huge Ebay fan for both antiques, decor, clothes, and jewelry. I love Etsy, and One Kings Lane.

For new decor items, I love Serena and Lily, Brooke and Lou and McGee and Co., and Mark and Graham

Looking forward to you joining their podcast tonite, as a regular listener of Anita and Kelly. James Farmer is adorable and he captures that Southern esthetique` which speaks to my heart in his designs and books. How could anyone reject that dark wicker chair you re-purposed for your home? Love your style, Cindy!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Nan
It is live now you can watch it anytime. I am so glad you enjoy Anita an Kelly. They are such pros aren’t they? I adore James Farmer as well. I love that wicker chair. I also have a pair of them but you can’t tell in the picture. Thank you so much for your support Nan. Always love hearing from you!

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Chris
That fabric is an indoor outdoor fabric by Perennials called Tattan Stripe. I also have that fabric on chairs in my family room.

    • Cindy Hattersley says

      Hi Chris

I am sorry I responded to this but it did not show up for some reason. The stripe is an indoor outdoor fabric from Perennials. It is actually in the picture of my coffee table with the antique box and studio mcgee vase.
