My Top 6 Gray Haircare Products You Need in Your Routine

I try to post on my favorite gray hair products regularly as I am constantly asked. Does your natural grey or silver hair look dull and lifeless? Do you have problems with yellowing or brassiness, frizz, split ends, and more? Gray hair care has come a long way. There are now hair products tailored for natural gray hair that help with thinning, curly, wavy, heat damaged or just hard to manage hair like mine. I am constantly trying new products as they keep improving. Let’s take a look at my top 6 gray haircare products you need in your routine right now.

My Top 5 Gray Haircare Products You Need in Your Routine

#1 Zuvi Halo Hairdryer

I continue to LOVE my Zuvi Halo Hairdryer. Obviously many others feel the same way as L’Oréal recently invested in Zuvi, recognizing the game-changing Light Care™ technology that protects the hair from over heating. Because It retains two times the moisture of a standard hair dryer it protects the hair follicles. Frizz and yellowing have been problematic for my silver strands. Both have improved immensely since I started using the Zuvi. Whatever your natural color, if you have locks with waves, frizz issues or thinning hair, or sensitive scalp, I think you will love this hairdryer. “If you have been considering buying a new hairdryer, now Zuvi has 25% off on their website, use my code CINDY5  here for an extra 5% off” The sale ends on the 31st.

**Please note: Due to popular demand the Zuvi dryer with three attachments is sold out. However the two attachment it still available.

FYI the zuvi is quiet and compact. The drying time is no different than the heat blaster I was using. It is extremely lightweight unlike some other dryers.

It also retains two times more moisture than a traditional hairdryer. It is highly recommended as one of the best hair dryers by Vogue, Time, Marie Claire, Wired, Forbes, Cosmopolitan, and Allure best of beauty (one of my go to’s when investigating good products)

#2 Madison Reed Gloss

This hair gloss along with the Zuvi hairdryer are what I consider my “holy grails”. I have used this gloss for years and it continues to be my go to for combatting brassy tones. I have tried salon versions and another by a very famous colorist. None compare to the Madison Reed Crema Gloss. It “enhances hair color & corrects tone, and adds brilliant shine”. It is made with Keratin & Argan Oil.

#3 Davines Shampoo and Conditioner

The Davines Alchemic Conditioner has been my conditioner of choice for a few years, but for some reason failed to try the Alchemic Shampoo until one of my reader’s suggested it. I have used numerous purple shampoos, many of them very good, but these two purple based are my current favorites. Alchemic is a system of shampoos and conditioners with pure pigments that can intensify and brighten both natural and cosmetic color. An added bonus is that all Davines products are certified net zero.

#4 Kerastase Blond Absolu Cicaextreme Strengthening Hair Oil

Many of you know I used Moroccan Oil for years and loved it, until my hairdresser pointed out that the original (not the light) formulation can cause yellowing (just what I was trying to avoid). Kerastase Blond Absolu hair oil provides “instant care for the hair fiber and anti-brass neutralization”. It is formulated with hyaluronic acid & edelweiss flower. It hydrates, neutralizes and fortifies the hair fiber. I have used their deep conditioner (masque) and find it works well.

#5 Color Wow Pop & Lock Frizz Control Serum

Color Wow Pop and Lock

This product line is fairly new and I was anxious to try it after reading so many good reviews. The Color Wow Pop & Lock Frizz Control Serum is the best I have tried of late. It combats frizz and has UV protectant (another source of yellowing).I use this heat protecting cream formulated for blonde hair. It is a leave-in treatment that is meant to hydrate and strengthen while providing heat protection. I only use a pump or two and distribute throughout my wet hair. I highly recommend this if you have similar issues.

#6 Malibu C Blondes Wellness Remedy

Malibu C Blondes Wellness Remedy was another recommendation from my wonderful hair stylist Edward Tedeschi (FYI the salon doesn’t sell it). It is inexpensive and it eliminates brassy, ashy and muddy tones in blonde, bleached, highlighted or gray/silver hair. I wish this had been available when my kids were swimmers.

Note: Most products that are formulated for blonde hair, also work for silver/gray hair.

  1. Hi Cindy
Thank you so much for the timely product review. Question regarding shampoo: do you use the Davines every time you shampoo or just a few times a month.

    Thank you so much

  2. Have you tried the Oway Siver Steel hair bath? I have been using it and love it.

    1. Hi Diane

No I have not. I will have to check it out. What do you like about it?

  3. Your gray becomes you, Cindy! I may always be half-gray, but I’ve started using L’oreal Silver Care shaampoo, which is wonderfully conditioning and brings out the silver.in a very good way!

    1. Hi Eva

I have not tried the Loreal. I will give it a try. Thanks for weighing in!

  4. love learning about new to me brands Cindy! i’m 98% gray under my hair dye 😉 but I’m bookmarking this for when i take the plunge to all gray and in the meantime will check them out to see what options are in those brands for color safe products. signed, beauty product junkie

    1. Hi Nancy

I remember being 98% under my hair dye. It is a hard decision and you are still just a babe!

  5. Oh goody. I get to buy even more hair products. I have so many for my grey hair. But you’e introduced me to even more. I think I have more hair products than face products but that couldn’t be possible could it? Looking forwar dto adding to my stash. I must say my hair does look better since I started obsessing and adding products to my dry thinning grey hair. I’m looking forward to that hair glaze and of course I must try that shampoo. One thing I have started using again and I think it’s working is minoxidil. Thanks again Cindy.

    1. Hi Sandra

Isn’t it ridiculous the lotions and potions we try! My hair hasn’t thinned much yet, but that will be my next issue!!

  6. Thank you for this. I just ordered the Zuvi. I have been thinking about trying it, so the discount helps! The two attachment version is fine for me, I wouldn’t use the diffuser anyway.

    1. Hi Lisa

It does take some getting used to follow the instructions and I think you will love it. My hair is no longer heat stressed since I have been using it.

  7. I have gray hair and would love to use something on it to make it more glossy — however, I am sensitive to all fragrance. It is so-far impossible to find fragrance-free products designed for gray hair. Super annoying! Would appreciate any recommendations from readers who are in the same boat.

    1. Hi Bette

I agree…why do we need all of that fragrance. I am not really sensitive to them but I feel scent is such a personal thing . Have you tried the ghost oil? It has no fragrance. I used it before the keristase. I don’t think it works quite as well but it has no odor

  8. What color do you use in the Madison Reed Color Gloss? How often do you use it?

    1. I use the Crema the one I linked to above. I honestly could use it every couple of weeks but I forget. I usually use it about once a month but could definitely use it more often. I love the stuff.

    1. Hi Cindy

It is not sold out only the one with the diffuser. I made an editor’s note. I don’t use the diffuser. Just click on the two part one. Sorry that the diffuser option is sold out!

  9. I use most of these too! Or at least another version of them.
I got the Zuvi after your original recommendation. It is definitely faster, so lightweight and leaves your hair in better condition. I do think there is a learning curve to it, though. The velocity is very strong and sometimes it will whip my hair around into tangles, if I am not careful.
My hair is still flat and slick and straight, so I don’t have to use the smoothing products or oils etc.
I can only use a mask or heavy conditioner when staying at home – it will not style at all with those!
Never heard of the Malibu C – thanks!!!

    1. Hi Gray

You are right there is a learning curve. If you follow their instructions it works! Here I though our hair was alike. You don’t have any frizz…darn you!
