Is Green Having a Moment in Fashion and Design?

The color green is known for its deep connection to nature, growth, and renewal. The various green shaded evoke feelings of peace, balance, and harmony—though it can also spark a touch of envy (the color of money). Personally, I love olive green and just about any shade with yellow undertones. However, emerald green—despite its current popularity—has never been a favorite of mine. Interestingly, in a recent outfit post, one reader mentioned they would have loved it if it weren’t green, while another admitted to once loathing the color but has since become a fan. If you study color psychology, you know green can be controversial. In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, let’s dive into the question: Is green having a major moment in fashion and design?

I painted my kitchen cabinets green a few years ago but quickly grew tired of them. If you’re considering jumping on the green trend, I recommend incorporating green accents that are easy and affordable to change—like painting a bathroom or bedroom wall, wallpapering a tiny bath, or adding it as an accent color in pillows and accessories. Kitchen cabinets, on the other hand, are a major investment and can be costly or labor-intensive to repaint, so it’s worth thinking twice before committing to such a bold choice.

Paint your Walls Green?

Do you like green walls? Would you have the courage to paint your walls a vibrant shade of green? How about sage green, or mint green? I might in a small bathroom or cozy den. If you prefer a softer color palette Benjamin Moore’s October Mist is a favorite of many designers. We painted Jenna’s room a in a similar pale green hue when she was a baby. It evoked a calming effect and was lovely combined with Benjamin Moore’s white dove trim.

I love the natural feel of the dark green walls in the living room of Mark Williams and Nicky Papadopoulos, photographed by Rustic White photography. The rich green makes a bold statement when combined with the other neutral colors and natural accents. I can’t tell if the entire room is painted this deep verdant green.

We painted the “wine of shame wall” and another small accent wall a dark lime green, in my son and daughter in law’s craft beer and wine bar (Farmers Union Pourhouse) for an earthy color statement and an homage to “the salad bowl of the world”.

Are you craving green kitchen cabinets? If so would you tire of them over time?

I love this kitchen with its verdant green cabinets, and the earthy slabs. I know I would persoanally tire of it, but I appreciate it in others homes. For more green cabinet ideas, check out Martha Stewart’s Green Cabinet Ideas here.

Outfits of the Week-Green is Enjoying a Moment

If you aren’t sold on olive, try treating it as any other neutral. For summer combine it with natural elements and natural textures to lighten the effect.

I spotted the Camo jacket from Gap a few weeks back. It comes in extended sizing, and it is on super sale! I love the Frank and Eileen shirt dress, the madewell jeans, and the Quince sneaks (with comfort soles) and their crossbody bag, (love this one too if you are looking for green.), and I couldn’t resist the LL Bean “smokey the bear vest”.

  1. Green is my favourite colour. In 1994 I visited Italy and my cousin invited us to her new home and she had the most beautiful green kitchen. If I re do my kitchen it will be green cabinets and a solid wood island. And Prue, would love to know if your British Racing Green car is a Jaguar. As a teenager the XJ 6 was my dream car.

    1. Hi Rita

Ahhhh the XJ6 my husbands fave as well! I would love to have a wood island too!

  2. You and Mary Ann can wear autumn shades of green. Any shade of green makes me look jaundiced so I avoid it. I’m a cool summer blonde that is turning mostly white. So shades of blue are my colors. I love the green of nature outside and in a few house plants as I’m a serial plant killer.

    1. Hi Sydney

I am a serial house plant killer too! I can’t seem to keep them alive inside!

  3. When I moved into my much smaller place this past fall, the kitchen walls were a mid green, with cabinets and appliances all white, and a sunny south facing window over the sink . It’s a small space so the colour was not overwhelming and some art from Tuscany work well against the green. The small den was totally painted the same green, except for ceiling , by the former owner. I liked it because I had a plan… a “crayon box” of colours in there, furniture from different rooms of my former house , chosen to make a cosy and personal tv , reading and craft room for me. Striped multicoloured rug and small lime coloured desk , both Wayfair , and a long low tv console in deep China red. I added long IKEA Vildpersilja floral curtains with a white background, which pull all the colours together on the sliding door/window. I painted the closet and entry door across the room white to add light and balance the amount of green. I was then ready to hang a cafe collection of art from my life and travels over the short Billy bookcases , which add a lot of interest and further personalize the room. It came together so well and is such a comfortable space opening onto my west facing patio , which will be my next project come spring. Like you, Cindy, I wear green well…limes, olives, deeper greens …which all show off my hazel eyes. Your clothing selections are often so like what I would choose! Your blog has such a great balance of clothing, garden, interiors, as well as food! My favourite to enjoy.

  4. Hi Cindy!
I love green! I wear it often as I can because I have green eyes and wearing green makes them even more green!
30 years ago I put emerald green carpeting in the family room of our new home! I loved it! My realtor friend said the couple who bought the house still have it!! It was very high quality so I can see why!!

  5. I have been sporting a pair of Warby Parker matte green glasses for about six months now – I am constantly being asked about them. I think people are really embracing GREEN!!!!! love it

  6. HUGE fan of green. It’s one of my favorite colors. My eyes are green – maybe that’s it?
Thanks for the yummy, easy recipe! It looks delish!

  7. Blue is my first true color-love, but I confess this round of green always appeals to me as well. Great post, something for everyone.
    Enjoy your week.
    Karen B.

  8. My friend says that green is God’s favourite colour, and it goes with everything. It seems to be true when you look outside after winter is over!
I used a soft light green on my kitchen walls 9 years ago and painted the cabinetry a creamy tone. Still enjoying it.

  9. I love green – lettuce green close to my face, and I love a green garden filled with form. My mother would have had a fit, bless her. She always said ‘Green for grief’ and was horrified when I mentioned we’d purchased a British Racing Green car!

  10. I think I was damaged by the prevalent avocado greens of the 60’s. My boarding school featured lots of it so I only enjoy very bright lime or chartreuse in limited amounts in my interiors or wardrobe.

  11. Hi Cindy,
Such a fun post thank you. Love green and just ordered a Kalamata green top from the Everlane sale. Happy Sunday xo

  12. I love certain greens. Have you noticed in TV shows that many background walls are green? Check it out — maybe because human flesh shows up well against complementary greens. I’m currently looking for new eyeglasses frames and have my heart set on green ones 😉

  13. Green is my favorite color, from emerald to tsavorite to peridot to tourmaline, I love them all. My house is pale grayed green with hunter trim, my living room is shades of olive and gold, my kitchen walls are a version of the Restoration Hardware silver sage with counters of grayed green granite and two of my bathrooms feature dark bottle green (one for the walls & ceiling and the other for cabinets with a paler silver sage on the walls). My wardrobe has many of the same greens and I wear all the green gemstones. Fashion usually seems to prefer blue so I am thrilled when there is more green on offer. Dark green jeans are on my wish list.

  14. As a paintbox Spring I love bright, cheery greens. In fact, green is probably my favorite color. I have always had some green in every house I’ve owned. To me it is a very comfortable color to live with….except that kitchen you showed. That was a bit over whelming .

  15. I’m an interior designer and I can honestly say that green is having more than a moment. In fact, I can’t remember a time when it was not in style. My childhood bedroom (over 60 years ago) had dark green wool carpet, I painted the walls green in my first home (over 40 years ago) and several of my clients copied it. Sometimes green is not as prominent as it is now, but how can any color in nature ever truly be out of style?

    1. Hi Shari

Exactly! As I said, I painted my kitchen cabinets green probably 40 years ago ( I did tire of them quickly). I love pops of green in my home and I am currently obsessed with olive green in my wardrobe!

  16. Hi Cindy,
I like green, and most shades of it. Many are tricky to wear depending on your coloring. I think it can be good in a home as well. I like the olive green on you, especially the pic that you added the beautiful scarf with the olive pants.
How nice of you to make the Fettucine for your friend that broke her ankle. You make the best kind of gal pal. You must have brighten her day in a big way. This is exactly what the world needs, is random acts of kindness exactly like this.

    1. Hi Katherine

Green certainly can be tricky to wear, I agree with that. Amen to more random acts of kindness…

  17. I loathe green in decorating unless it’s a plant. That kitchen is gag worthy IMHO but will probably appeal to some. Keep green out doors where it belongs…on the other hand I am not averse to a very little bit of well curated olive in my wardrobe preferably worn with bright pink, magenta or turquoise. Never near my face ( winter colouring so yellow tones are no compliment)
Also not a fan of peaked caps but the little black hat is cute.

    1. Hi Ally

Well tell us how you really feel ha ha!! I am not a pink fan but but if I were I would love kelly green and pink. I love olive and turquoise as well.

  18. I’ve just come around to liking green. I started by adding small doses in my home, then started wearing green sweaters, currently owning three different shades. Mt favourite is a light green like sage, or a silvery green, or a light grass green. Olive doesn’t work with my skin tone, although I do have a utility jacket stored away but I always wore a more flattering color by my face. And, forest green is a big No for me.

That recipe looks so yummy. Sadly, I’m on a diet and carbs are not allowed but I will save it for later.

  19. Over 30 years ago I upholstered my study in a forest green and painted ceiling to match. Was inspired by English interiors. Still like it.

In first floor Reno that runs length of house not to south led me to search for a green that read green not bluish or yellowish. Took over 25 qt with samples on both ends. One day a young electrician apprentice came in, looked up and said, “Dude, you’re going camo. Cool.”

    1. Hi Patricia

Love your electrician story…I hear you with your sample story as well.been there!!

  20. Green. Hmm. I can be comfortable in dark forest or deep emerald, but never lime or olive. And I stay away from green in decor except for a few house plants. Martha’s green kitchen cabinets would kill my appetite, maybe not a bad thing! I will wait this trend out! Lots of other color choices for me.

  21. I love green, but not the two olive-y greens you have shown in the painted interiors. My favorite green is the color of green onions. Not sure how else to describe it!

  22. I am a green girl. I have had green in my homes in some form or another since the day I was married 51 years ago. Our first apartment had lime geen carpeting and green and white lattice wallpaper in the entrance hall. Very fresh at the time lol! I am currently painting the master bedroom a medium dark green with a lot of white trim, closet doors and plantation shutters. I know I will love it.

I am slowly getting into the wider leg jeans and realize all are not created equal. It’s been a long process of try-ons to get the proportion right with tops, shoes, etc. I always felt “chubby” with this new look. I had to laugh when I saw the Madewell jeans you highlighted on the model….even she looked a little chubby!
