How Much do Topical Lotions and Potions Help Mature Skin?

This is the first edition to a series on selfcare where we will be spotlighting some our local heroes who help us look and feel our best. I will be chatting with my amazing hairdresser, Edward, Kelly my go to Aesthetic Rn at Chalekson Medspa who specializes in non-invasive facial treatments, Anna, my brow aficionado and makeup artist, and more. They will share their expert tips and insider secrets.

How Much do Topical Lotions and Potions Help Mature Skin?

Let’s begin by chatting about all of our lotions and potions. Let’s be honest those of us with mature skin have accumulated a small arsenal of lotions and potions. We have gotten drawn into the dazzling ads, heard the enthusiastic testimonials, and out of desperation have invested in countless lotions and potions. As we look in the mirror, a nagging question remains. How much do topical lotions and potions help mature skin? I have joined a new affiliate network which gifts countless products. I have been trying as many as I can to delve into the reality behind the hype to see what if anything really makes a difference to those of us with mature complexions.

What Have I Learned?

What have I learned? There are some great products out there in all price ranges that can improve texture, hydration and perhaps radiance. What is actually worth your time and money when it comes to mature skin? Let’s be honest anyone with really good skin at this age stayed out of the sun. I baked in the sun without sunscreen until I was well into my 30’s, and I continued to bake in the sun with sunscreen well after that. For the last 20 years I have been reformed but the damage was done. So what can we do? I had a lower facelift three years ago. I documented it in this post Why are we so Secretive about Having Work done here, and How to get the Best Results from your Facelift here.

What is Important

Take care of your skin—it really is that simple. We can’t undo the damage that’s already been done, but we can protect it from further harm. Feed your body (and your skin) with a diet rich in antioxidants and healthy fats, make sleep a priority (I’m still working on that one myself), skip the cigarettes, and ease up on the cocktails. Small, consistent choices make all the difference when it comes to keeping mature skin healthy.

Sun Protection

Non-negotiable even though you may think much of the damage is done. There is still hope, right? Wear a hat, protective clothing, and slather on the sunscreen whenever you are in the sun. You might enjoy my recent post on 8 Expert Recommended Sunscreens for Mature Skin here.

Hydration

Drink plenty of water and use good quality moisturizers that are best for your skin type.

Mind your Lifestyle

Eat a healthy diet filled with antioxidants and healthy fats. Get plenty of sleep (personally working on that one). Don’t smoke and drink less alcohol.

Important Ingredients in your Lotions and Potions

Retinol (including retinaldehyde and tretinoin)

The gold standard for cell turnover and collagen production. You have to take it consistently ( over the counter versions may be best for those with overly sensitive skin).

Antioxidants (vitamin C, E, Ferulic Acid, Niacinamide)

They protect against environmental damage, have brightening benifits (vitamin c), and help strengthen and repair the skin’s natural protective layer, (niacinimide). You might find my post How to Choose the Best Vitamin C Serum here helpful (an update coming soon)

how to choose a vitamin c serum

Hyaluronic Acid

Helps strengthen and repair the skin’s natural protective layer. You might enjoy my post (updated soon in this series) Skincare After 50 Hyaluronic Acid Serrums.

What Lotions and Potions are Worth the Investment

A Gentle Non-Stripping Cleanser

I’ve used Neutrogena Hydro Boost for several years now and remain impressed with how well it performs—especially for the price. Recently, I was gifted Dermalogica’s Special Cleansing Gel, a product I’ve loved in the past but stopped using because of the cost. I still think it’s an excellent cleanser, and I love that they now offer refills, which makes it a bit more budget-friendly. If you’re looking to try something new, it’s definitely worth considering

Serums-Retinoids, Antioxidant (Vitamin C), and Hyaluronic Acid

I have used a perscription retinol for years and have had problems with drying lately. I mentioned in my post Current Skincare Products for Aging Skin, another product that I was gifted BYOS Bakuchiol Serum at the LTK conference last year (or I never would have tried it). I think there might be something to bakuchiol (especially if your skin is sensitive). I seriously love the stuff. My latest gift was from Dr. Brandt. His triple active retinol is a milder option to the perscription Retin A I was using, So far I like it and it is not as irritating, but again it is pricey.

Moisturizers-look for ceramides and fatty acids

Eye Creams?

Are these just pricey moisturizers in tiny jars? Some might be a bit gentler, but ultimately, it comes down to your judgment—and your budget. I’m currently testing Dr. Brandt’s Fatigue-Fighting Eye Gel and will share my thoughts after I’ve used it for a while. So far, I’m enjoying the lightweight gel that hasn’t irritated my eyes.

Sunscreens

Absolutely! You may find my article on Eight Expert Recommended Sunscreens helpful here. I was recently gifted One Skin Face SPF 30. This one is pricey but a good one. My skin is still prone to the occasional break out. Anything too heavy or oily aggrevates the issue. If you have the same issues read the reviews and try it.

Masks

May provide immediate hydration and glow but probably not long-term results

You may find the order of application of skincare products confusing. Here is a simple guide.

Order of application for skincare

Miracle Cures

I am gifted a lot of skincare products. Some I try and some I decline. I don’t believe there’s any magic potion out there—consistency is the real secret when it comes to skincare. Many drugstore brands have excellent formulations, so don’t get hung up on fancy labels. Take the time to read ingredient lists and remember that good skincare takes patience—results don’t happen overnight. Focus on a few quality products rather than overloading your skin, which can lead to irritation. And don’t be afraid to experiment a little! That’s exactly why I’m testing the products that may have potential. I will try and post regularly in my Sunday favorites those that I think have value.

Listen to your Skin

Do your research (I know the landscape is vast and confusing!!) Adjust your routine and try out new products. At the end of the day, no cream or serum will completely stop the aging process.. Mature skin tells our story, and there’s beauty in that. But the right lotions and potions, used consistently, can make a noticeable difference in hydration, texture, and overall radiance. Focus on quality ingredients, protect your skin from further damage, and don’t expect overnight miracles. Think of skincare as a daily investment in feeling good in your own skin. After all, confidence is the best beauty secret of all.

  1. Cindy, between you and all of your lovely followers I have a list a mile long of things I need to try!

  2. Hi Cindy! Thank you for posting this topic.
I have allergies and skin sensitivities. I’ve learned the hard way that less is more. Have you heard of Dr. Rogers?
    https://www.doctorrogers.com/

This is her philosophy and she does sell her own products, but she also does blogs on what to buy and not at the store. For instance, I’m a fan of Cerave as well and she recommends them too. Her products contain minimal ingredients so less chances of having a reaction. I have used the healing balm on myself and love it.
    Check her out!

    1. Hi Phyllis!
A friend and follower of Cindy here!
I am here to add to your testimonial to Dr Heather Roger’s skincare line.

About a year ago, I too was ready to simplify my skincare routine and decided to give Dr Heather Roger’s line a try. I absolutely love it!
The difference in the texture and tone of my skin is unbelievable.

I appreciate her communication and education through her weekly emails and I follow her more detailed education on her YouTube channel. She is kind to educate on products other than hers.

Since her practice is in Seattle, she will appear on occasion at Nordstrom, Bellevue Square. Her products are in some Nordstrom locations.

I can honestly say that I have never seen results from a skincare regimen in my over 60, now 73 years season of life like the results from Dr Roger’s. The money I save from no longer requiring a facial every other month more than pays for the products and has allowed me to level up on a hairstylist.

Wishing you , Cindy and all visit here a great summer!
      Lynne

        1. Ahhh…Cindy!
You are a rock star to me! 😘
I can’t imagine navigating my empty nest into retirement years without your wisdom, style and inspiration!

        2. I love Lynne and miss her blog! She is such an amazing lady.

      1. Lynne I’ve been so happy with Dr. Roger’s recommendations and yesterday, a young woman kept looking at me and finally she said, you have the most beautiful skin!(im in my 60s) That truly means a lot because for years I struggled with acne and allergies, so to have someone say that to me almost made me cry! Glad you’re happy with Dr. Rogers too.

        1. Hi Phyllis

I have contacted Dr. Rogers. I would love to try some of her products since so many of you speak so highly of them.

  3. A topic that you did not mention are the dreaded under eye bags! I am sure that I am not the only one walking around with them. I have used eye cream for as long as I can remember, but they are still there. Wondering if anyone has used one of the products that says it gets rid of them. There is one whose name starts with a “P ” that is advertised on TV. I am afraid to try in case they get my cc# and bill me forever. The other products I see are quite pricey. Curious to know if there is a product that really works.

    1. Hi Carole

Another issue we need to cover!! I don’t have eye bags per se, but I do think for swelling etc., some of the gel formulas help that. Hopefully, someone will chime in on that one!

  4. We lost everything from our home on the Guadalupe River. But did manage to pull out some filthy brown mudded clothes. In a dark closet, no power, hard to see or even walk in the pile of mud in there. Hosing them down to wash off the strange ugly flood mud. Then in washing machines as directed by a friend. Some came out surprisingly well even a few pairs of shoes although , that’s a maybe. God is with us. We survived. We have family. 💜

    1. Cindy! I know what a researcher you are, and this post is brilliant! So much great information about skin care! And you do have the most beautiful skin!
      Xx

    2. Hi Laurie

Oh my goodness, thankfully you are fine. I can’t imagine what you must be going through. Let us know if there is anything we can do to help!

  5. For several years I was using quite a few lotions and potions from an expensive organic “natural” skin care line and my skin looked awful. Dry, dull, breakouts, redness. I went to my dermatologist and he told me my skin was probably reacting to some of the essential oils in the products. He advised that I simplify my skincare routine with a few basic products and even recommended some drug store brands. I now use Vanicream unscented gentle cleanser, BYOMA balancing skin mist, CeraVe vitamin C serum with hyaluronic acid, ROC eye cream with peptides and CeraVe daily moisturizing facial cream. I use Tatcha silk sunscreen SPF 50 which is pricey but it’s my holy grail sunscreen (former sun worshiper with history of squamous cell carcinoma skin cancer). My skin has never looked better!

    1. Hi Kiersten

I am going to take a look at the ceravie vitamin c serum with hyaluronic acid. I would love to just use one! Angie from Hot and Flashy and her chemist father just released one but it is already sold out. I plan to try that when it is restocked. My Aesthetic RN mentioned the ROC eye cream yesterday. I used to use that one as well. I am currently trying what I am offered if I think they have possibilities. I use the Cera Ve daily moisture cream with my CC cream to lighten it, and I love that it has a sunscreen in it! Thanks for all your suggestions!

    1. Hi Christi
I do not use a face oil. My skin still tends to break out. Currently I am using ceravie daytime moisturizer with sunscreen and trying some of the products I have listed.

  6. I was told and have read that you apply your retinol, then your moisturizer. That way the retinol has contact with your skin and does its job. Is your graft right?

    1. Hi Joanna

YES you are right!! I am going to fix that. I could not find the newer version of graphic and now I know why I needed the newer one! I will correct it!!

  7. I have used Pevonia products for dry skin for years. And recently discovered their sunscreen which doesn’t break my face out. I stock up on the items I use when they have a sale. I watch what I eat, NEVER go to bed with makeup on, am mindful of sun exposure (a melanoma patient) and try to get enough sleep. Several months ago, my young hot-shot dermatologist told me that whatever I was doing to my 71-year-old skin to keep doing it!

  8. Hi. I loved this post. I wonder if anyone has tried the one skin OS-01 face cream. It would be nice not to use so many products in addition to sunscreen, retinol and cleanser.

  9. Hello Cindy, I have been a Paula’s Choice gal for over ten years. These products are at a good price point for me and believe my skin is better for using them! It is overwhelming at the plethora of products even with Paulas’s choice but have narrowed my skin routine to five products. I particularly like the triple active total repair serum and the glycolic acid! I do get facials from time to time and my esthetician uses Comfortzone products which I am pleased with! I really appreciate your informative blog, lots of good information and food for thought! Thank you!

    1. Hi Molly

Paula’s choice Vitamin C serum is always highly ranked. I need to do a deeper dive into more of her products!

  10. I worked for a MedSpa for years and ran the Sephora skincare area. Read those labels!! What’s first on the list? Are there ugly parabens to watch out for?
You have been given excellent advice and your list is so spot on. I am always asked “How is she doing that?” at our high school reunion it was my you have no wrinkles…what are you doing? To my friends who ask I always say..Retinol in any form your skin can tolerate is a huge key..I now use The Ordinary off Amazon as it’s been less drying for me but for years it was prescription form daily. Sunscreen even if your not outdoors for the day..it’s always to be on your skin except at bedtime.
You want those peptides, polypeptides, neocinimides top of the ingredient list. The sun feels so nice on our skins but oh so bad for it.
Awesome post today! Can’t wait to hear your results from your trials.

    1. Hi Lori

Absolutely read the labels, and do your research. The posts that I do on a particular product such as Vitamin C serums take me hours of reading and researching. I need to update those because there are always new products coming on the market that are bigger and better!

  11. You are so well read, you probably know about Prime Women. One of their topics today was about anti-aging skin care (I know you don’t like the term anti-aging and I agree but until we find a better replacement…). When I was with my daughter recently, she mentioned Gold Bond Age Renew Retinol Overnight lotion. I had tried a Gold Bond lotion for skin tightening a few years ago but saw nothing positive happening. With the addition of retinol in this one, I decided to try and I’m using it on my upper arms. I can’t use retinol or any of those type products on my face because I react terribly. I would be SO happy if this makes a difference on my arms!

    1. Hi Wren

I was using the Gold Bond for awhile. I will be anxious to hear what you think. My arms are awful!!

  12. I’ve used Paula’s Choice products for 20+ years and appreciate that I can easily find products to address my skin’s ever evolving challenges. The wide range of products are often updated based on new science and there is comprehensive information available about treatment ingredients, benefits, and usage. The treatments and boosters are especially fabulous and easy to work into my skin care routine. Life is a little easier for me with one-stop skin care shopping and I appreciate the sales and incentives they offer. At 70, my skin has never looked better, though still an ongoing challenge! A limited selection of products are available in most Sephora stores, but the real magic is in all the products on the Paula’s Choice website.

  13. Cindy. Growing up there was a choice of drugstore cosmetics and skin care with limited lines and then the dime store with the overriding smells of popcorn and parakeets! Do you remember Yardley lipsticks? Thank you for assessing products and letting us know your thoughts! Even at 83 I read skincare articles in women’s magazines and am open to trying something new. My favorite skincare line is Chanel but so pricey. I think the main thing is sunscreen and being consistent and never going to bed with makeup on like Bianca Jagger said years ago. Stay hydrated with good liquids not alcoholic ones. Thank goodness smoking is out. Don’t use straws as they make you purse your lips and create wrinkles around your mouth..seriously this is true similar to smoking. I also like to use a jade roller my face; this feels nice and maybe helps to lift sagging. Really enjoy all of your offerings, Donnie

    1. Always love your post. About skin care, it is really trial and error sometimes. I have found a really good budget friendly moisturizer for occasional use. It’s St. Ives renewing moisturizer. Good for hands as well, also non comedogenic. Also Palmer’s Fade Cream works well for me. It gets rid of dark spots with continued use. I do feel like Retinol and Hyaluronic Acid really help, even the drug store products and those found on Amazon. Thank you for all the good info. Have a great day.
      Kay

      1. Hi Kay

Great to hear about St. Ives and Palmer. I must check them out!

  14. This is wonderful that you’re doing this series. It’s all so confusing. Last night I watched Fareed Zakaria interview Jensen Huang about AI, very interesting and I should care a lot, but all I could think of is how handsome they are and how much Botox or what have they used? The women on TV are so over the top. I am just clueless and my skin is becoming lifeless and colorless. And I don’t stick to anything, I buy what Costco has on sale. Snail mucus was as disappointing as its name. All my life I thought you had to save money for long term care. Nope, please, young people, save money for your skin and help to move furniture.

  15. I have used prescription retin A for over twenty years. I was a sun worshipper for over 50 years. We had moved to Florida and our dermatologist had a big poster on the wall that said, “if you keep baking your skin it will look like leather”. I started noticing women who had deep tans and what the quality of their skin really looked like and I decided to stop trying to get a tan. I use retin A, a Skin Medica vitamin C serum, and two Timeless serums, one in the daytime and one at night. Most importantly of all, I wear Elta MD UV Clear spf 46 every day without fail and I stay out of the sun. I am 77 years young and people stop me all the time to tell me I have beautiful skin. Even my dermatologist told me I have beautiful skin, without adding “for your age”. So I must be doing something right. Consistency is the name of the game. You are never to old to turn back the hands of time but Retin A is a must. Start with the lowest dose and work up over time to what your skin will tolerate.

  16. RE: Vit. C products. Like many, I used the Skinceuticals CE ferulic for years. There are now much less expensive options and different formulations. My latest is from E.L.F., has same ingredients, smells & looks same, priced affordably. (FYI, I have also used Paula’s Choice (serum & cream formulas) & Maelove, but I’m loving E.L.F. right now Gives a glow!)
